We use stabilizers for Nepa because most of there lights are either below or above 220mw and most electronics we have works well when on 220mw
Our generators are set already on 220mw, so no need to stabilise the current because its already stabilized by the gen

There is nothing like 220mw on a small/domestic generator, it is 220/230V for Nigeria.
Secondly, you can use freezer with a stabilizer, technically termed Voltage Regulator.

The problem OP had was probably with the phone chargers which I suspect are faulty thereby causing a short circuit fault.
Those chargers must have been very hot beforehand which led to the terminals melting and there was a leakage from live to neutral.

I have been using my generator to power my freezer vid the stabilizer (voltage regulator) and there has never been a single issue like this.
