Business › Re: Digital Extraction: How Tech Giants Earn Big While Local Wealth Stagnates by diesel86: 10:43am On Oct 24, 2025 |
1Alex: Here’s a plain-language summary of the article:
Foreign tech and finance companies are quietly making big money from Nigerians through airtime loans, small cash loans, and other mobile-based credit services. One example is a company called **Optasia**, which works with major phone networks like **MTN** to offer these services to millions of Nigerians.
The problem? Almost all the real profits, data, and technology are kept **outside Nigeria**. The companies run their servers abroad, pay little tax locally, and employ only a few Nigerians for basic roles. Meanwhile, Nigerian consumers provide the usage data, take on the credit risks, and pay the fees — but foreign investors get the rewards.
Even though Nigeria has laws that could prevent this (like data protection and tax rules), they’re not properly enforced. This means the country is **exporting digital wealth** while getting very little in return.
Other countries, like India and Indonesia, have already fixed this by forcing foreign companies to operate through **local subsidiaries**, process data **inside the country**, and share ownership with **local investors**.
The article argues that Nigeria should do the same. Regulators should:
* Make sure any company offering mobile credit is **licensed and based in Nigeria**. * Require that **data from Nigerians stays in Nigeria**. * Ensure foreign firms **pay taxes and invest locally**. * Let **Nigerian investors share in the profits** when these firms go public abroad.
In short: Nigeria’s digital economy is growing fast, but the value is flowing out of the country. To stop being exploited, Nigeria must **set fair rules** so that the data, profits, and opportunities created by Nigerians also benefit Nigerians. Good use of Chatgpt 👍 |

Okonjo iweala,Lamido sanusi and Soludo are also fantastic. It was even Lamido Sanusi that raised that Alarm that "WHY IS CBN NOT RECEIVING DOLLARS FROM NNPCL SALES" which TINUBU/YEMI implemented.
It is the same system of CBN not involved in the receipts from the sales of the country most important resources that led sanusi to accuse NNPC/GEJ of embezzling 20billion dollars then. That accusation alone dented GEJ government image and eventually culminated to the end of his Government. Please remove that statement that you are Yoruba, a policy was implemented (that your Okonjo, Sanusi and Soludo could not implement ) Please give credits to this Ọmọlúwàbís with brains . @OP nice one sire. we don't get to see interesting and educative topics like this on this forum smh. It's always about BBnaija and other craps!
Reason an average Nigerian lack basic knowledge in world history.
If you ask 100 random Nigerian men how Adolf Hitler died... You would probably get around 99 wrong answers. Ask 100 women the same question, you would get 200 wrong answers(The female are worse, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it because I'm a female)
Meanwhile there are 11 years old boys/girls who can recite all past BBNAIJA winners till present.
Not funny.

I am not overtly concerned about those who are not really skilled migrating (sorry to say they would not be mostly missed).
My concern is regarding Skilled professionals who possess specialized knowledge and expertise that are crucial for various sectors, such as healthcare, engineering, and technology.
When they leave the country, their absence creates a significant void in these fields, leading to a scarcity of highly skilled workers. Consequently, Nigeria may struggle to address complex challenges and innovate within key sectors, stifling its overall development potential.
Addressing the negative impact of emigration requires a multi-faceted approach which I am not sure the government is equiped to implement or have the political will to confront. |

It should be a gradual process. They can start implementing it little by little while making all necessary infrastructure ready to support cashless economy. The poor state of economy was not caused by the common man. They in power created the mess we are in. All previous government officials are responsible for the bad state of the country. They should start experimenting the process and correct anything loopholes in it. If Nigeria can have people like Osibanjo, Peter Obi, Okonjo Iweala, and other bright minds plenty in government, things will work better. We are not yet matured to govern ourselves. I am even tired of ranting, a lot of people have already given up on the system. Mediocity is just too much over here. In you are in government or have contacts to those implementing policies. Please you guys should do more research on how to make life easy for the common man. If life is easy, a lot of people will pay their tax easily and everyone will be happy. Good day. Sorry sir, I can feel your fustrations too, I am just a Nigerian like you, I don't have any influence within the system, I just feel one needs to Speak up at times not everything the government does is evil, though they put us in the mess we are in today |

9japride: You guys just like fire brigade approach to important issues. What measures have the government put in place to encourage online banking? Those who are at the top and others benefiting from government don't understand the daily struggles of the common man. Cashless economy is good, but it's the environment geared towards it? Always making things hard for the common man. Every policy always have a hidden motive. The leaders are a product of the society. So Leave all these political talk. Simple thing to make life good for every, it's very difficult to do by government. Just create a conducive environment for people to thrive they can't do. Rather they live to spend money on irrelevant things. I agree with you sir that not enough as been done not only to encourage online banking but the infrastructure to really support it, but if we wait for that I don't think we would even get started at all, we already have a lot of fintech companies in Nigeria I think this is an opportunity for them. WeChat in China is an example. |

Since the announcement was made regarding the redesign of the Naira, I have taken time to have a thorough understanding of what the average Nigerian thinks of the policy.
I must state here that the performance of the present Government has been a poor one in almost all sectors most especially Security and Economy. So i am definitely not speaking on their behalf.
Back to my observation, after todays press release from CBN as regards limit on cash withdrawals as a follow up to the redesign policy and how most Nigerians have reacted to it as left me wondering as to how we truly feel about this Country, but from my opinion i don't think most of us want this country to become great .
My final conclusion is this not all policies would be Nigerian friendly at first especially with this present Government but if we want a Nigeria that works like all this developed Nations we all want to be like, there are some tough choices that must be made and this Naira redesign and limitations on cash available in the system is one of them.
God bless Nigeria. God bless Nigerians. I pray one day we would be a source of pride to every black person all over the world . |

Most of the Instagram accounts of most celebrities are filled with bots.
So literally they are wasting their money.
Do you know why she charged 3.5m naira because she knew it was a big brand but that could be her top cash out for the year.
It can take another year to get a cash out like that in that industry. True 100% i also believe the influencers, their agents and in house company marketing managers have a kind of gentle man agreement if you understand |

I actually work with an advertisement agency, we just signed a deal with about 7 influencers i would not mention names, the product is an international energy drinks company and one of the influencers a very popular female, charges ₦3.5M for one instagram post . This is not to justify the lavish lifestyle most flaunt online though, it is showbiz and part of the business, the more expensive your lifestyle looks sometimes, the higher you charge for your Gigs. This is why i advise companies to invest in DATA, so they dont just throw funds away in the name of influencer marketing |
