obainojazz: Dayo don forget as things be for naija
IB used to be a very cheap town as per rent, food, education and transportation, however I believe say those days done pass now. IB may not be as expensive as other towns, but it is no longer that lovely town where you get things for cheap. I don pay person rent for IB this year…and I paid over half a million for a 3bedroom wey no dey anywhere close to the supposed expensive areas for IB ooo.
Ibime: Midrange should be like £28k to £40k tear rubber
Most cars will lose 40 to 50% of their value in the first 3 years, so if you buy tear rubber you will chop depreciation. From year 4, you are good to go
For mileage, it depends on the price range of the car when brand new, and the mileage you do per year. You will accept 70k miles from a BMW but won't accept 30k miles from a Vauxhall for the same price.
Also size of engine and fuel type matters. My current car was on 45k miles on diesel 1.6, but I won't hesitate to accept a 70k miles on a 2 litre engine from a reliable brand. A 2 litre diesel will die around 200k miles. Meanwhile you won't accept 30k miles on a 1.2 petrol engine because it will die at like 100k miles.
Ibime: Simple. I bought my current car last year for £14k. If I sell it now. I'd expect to receive £12.5k for it, achieving my aim. Or I'd expect to run it for 9.3 years to its death to achieve that depreciation target. That's the value I placed on motoring.
Midrange cars around 4 to 5 years old achieve this easily. I drive Honda CRV late 2018 model.
My last car did £1k depreciation from 2017 when I bought it to 2023. I sold it for £6k less than I bought it.
Thanks for replying so quickly. Chaiiii…….I hail thee!!!! You be really AgbaAccountant!
Meanwhile, am I safe to say that this can only work for used cars? The reason I ask is because I bought my madam a brand new Audi in 2021, and the current market cost is almost half the price on Auto sites and less than half if we're looking to trade it in with Audi.
Do you consider the mileage on the vehicle when calculating the cost per year? Also, what’s your definition of midrange cars? anything below £50k?
I am currently in the market to buy a car. Is there a way to purchase the car one desires without losing a significant amount of monetary value, as in your case? Or do you generally recommend avoiding brand new cars and opting for used vehicles instead?
Oga mi, you too like to run from billings. Me way I still dey come collect small thing for your ends this year. Meanwhile, that Ibime £1.5k depreciation value per year still dey shock me. Abeg I need that help right now
Ibime: Leasing has tax advantages if you are a contractor and the car meets certain environmental conditions
So if you run it through company it makes sense. Also some companies may offer car schemes with tax advantages that may make it worthwhile to indulge your fetish If you fancy a Tesla for example.
Other than that it makes financial sense to buy outright without these tax advantages. It depends on the emotional value you place on cars. Some guys like to drive the latest year plate and some guys like to get value. Either way is understandable and you make your choice to suit your preference
My preference is not to eat more than £1.5k depreciation per year so I make my choice based on that metric
Hafa?! which type cars depreciation no dey more than £1.5k per year? Abeg I need this info asap. Thanks.
Ibime: Alex is a banker and knows better. He knows exactly how to measure ROIs and financial feasibility of projects, which makes what he is doing all the more evil. He is simply on a looting spree.
As long as you can borrow to have 10 times the budget of the previous Governor and deliver 3 times the projects, with just 30% of that budget, most Nigerians will hail you because they are mostly financially illiterate. Meanwhile you loot the other 70%. 8 years from now he will start hiring pressmen to write and blame the incoming Governor having left him bankrupt.
100%.
Naaah.....forget about him hiring pressmen. My guy will simply pull an Okowa and install another evil and mumu man as the governor. Then the process will start over again, rinse and repeat.
Ibims....na me hail pass my oga. Meanwhile.. I dey enjoy your takes on Gov. Otti. Most of our leaders are clueless, especially when they are in power. Our polithiefcians only seem to become sensible once they are no longer in office. In Nigeria's current climate, one would expect all state governors not to borrow for capital projects which would further put their state in unnecessary debts, but no.... we must build useless capital projects like our former Ebonyi governor.
Here's a vid of Obaseki complaining few years ago about the past government printing money
Any governor wey still dey borrow for capital projects that won't directly benefit the basic needs of their people...instead to invest in areas that would secure the fundamental needs of the common man, such as jobs, food, shelter and education....must end up like Ekweremadu.
