The £4.25billion sale of Chelsea is on the brink of completion after it was formally signed off by the UK Government.

Ministers have given the green light to Todd Boehly’s takeover after weeks of tense negotiations to ensure that current owner Roman Abramovich does not benefit from the proceeds of the deal.

On Monday, the Premier League said the consortium had passed its owners’ and directors’ test. The deal still needs to be approved by the European Commission because Abramovich has a Portuguese passport.

But there is now optimism in the Boehly-led consortium that the process to buy Chelsea should be wrapped up before the May 31 deadline set by the Government.

"We are working closely with Chelsea to progress the sale," said the Prime Minister's official spokesman. "We are holding intense discussions with the relevant international partners to get the necessary approvals.

"We want to get this process done as soon as possible while also ensuring the sanctions regime is protected, but we will say more on this as soon as we possibly can."

The deal will bring an end to Abramovich's 19-year ownership of Chelsea, in which the club has won 21 trophies including five Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Boehly, co-owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team, and fellow consortium member Hansjörg Wyss were at Stamford Bridge for Sunday's final 2-1 win over Watford.

The news will be a boost for Thomas Tuchel's side as they have been unable to buy or sell players or negotiate new contracts with players due to the restrictions imposed on Abramovich over his alleged links to Vladimir Putin's Russia.

Antonio Rudiger is joining Real Madrid on a free transfer and Andreas Christensen, club captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have all been linked with Barcelona.

The Premier League season is finally over with Arsenal finishing in fifth position which automatically sees them play in the UEFA Europa Cup next season but the Gunners have a lifeline as they could replace Chelsea in the Champions League.



However, according to BBC Sports, the FA need to nominate clubs for UEFA competitions by the start of next month. Chelsea still have some major hurdles to overcome to get an owner in before then.

With that, If the deadline is not met, Arsenal get Chelsea's spot in the Champions League.

Kenya and Zimbabwe have been removed from the qualification process for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after failing to suspensions imposed on them by FIFA.

FIFA suspended the football associations of the two nations in February, owing to “undue interference by a third party”.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said they were suspended for “political interference”.

CAF had included Kenya and Zimbabwe in the draw for the 2023 AFCON in April, on the provision that they successfully appealed against their FIFA suspension.

But, with qualification for the tournament to begin next month, CAF says that Kenya and Zimbabwe “have not yet met the criteria required by the FIFA Congress as a prerequisite for lifting their suspension”.

The groups that they had been drawn in will now only contain three teams, with the top two still qualifying for the tournament.
