Premier League clubs are worried that next weekend's round of fixtures could also be postponed after this weekend's matches were called off in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The league's board voted unanimously in favour of calling this weekend's schedule off on Friday, with fixtures across the country similarly cancelled - including at grassroots level.

However, the move came in for criticism when other sports - such as rugby union and cricket - decided to play on in the Queen's honour instead.

The Guardian report that Premier League clubs fear they could lose next weekend's fixtures too. A state funeral is expected to be held on Monday 19 September, and while there are no top flight games scheduled for that date specifically, there could be further logistical challenges.

The funeral will require a large police operation and so there may be a shortage of security available for football matches, particularly those in London that weekend - Tottenham host Leicester on Saturday, while Brentford play Arsenal and Chelsea face Liverpool on Sunday.

Brighton's Saturday clash at home to rivals Crystal Palace was postponed due to a planned train strike that day, but industrial action has since been called off due to the Queen's passing.

Premier League Statements confirming further postponements beyond this weekend's action are yet to be announced, but it is anticipated that next weekend's Premier League fixtures will also be called off.






With the United Kingdom entering a mourning period and the funeral expected to take place next weekend, it is likely that further postponements will occur in the Premier League and other competitions.



It also means the WSL could have to wait another week to kick off their 2022/23 campaign, while the EFL could also face further postponements to deal with.

The decision has caused a division of opinions on social media as to whether this was the right thing to do as some, such as Gary Neville, believe that sports crowds would have given The Queen the respect she deserves.

The reasons for the decision have since been revealed by the Daily Telegraph’s, Ben Rumsby, who states that there were four primary points to matches being postponed. These are:



1. Elizabeth II was a patron of the FA (she isn’t of most other sports).

2. Her grandson is president of the FA.


3. Football is the national sport.

4. Initial tributes had already been paid at matches.

Chelsea head to Croatia for Tuesday night’s Champions League group stage curtain raiser. The Blues, who are very much inconsistent right now, will hope to get their Champions League campaign up and running.



Thomas Tuchel’s team came from behind to defeat West Ham at the weekend 2-1 at home, but critics of the match claim Chelsea benefitted from a favourable VAR call, which overturned a Hammers’ equaliser. The call was correct, however.

Dinamo Zagreb are in fine form in the Croatian Division 1. Tuesday’s home team is unbeaten in eight matches and tops the league by eight points already.



These teams have not played previously in European competition. This season’s Champions League has thrown up a few matches between teams that have not met before or in some time. This is one of those matches giving fans the chance to see something different.



Raheem Sterling leads Chelsea in goals this season with three in the Premier League. Sterling will likely start in attack unless Tuchel decides to make an adjustment to the Chelsea attack. Liverpool Football Club have finalized a deal with Portuguese Primeira Liga side Benfica for the acquisition of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez.

Julian Ward who is Liverpool’s director of football, had been in Portugal over the weekend to iron out the details of the transfer and he has now found a breakthrough as the Reds prepare to make the 22-year-old the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Liverpool will pay Benfica the sum of €80 million Euros (around £64-68 million pounds) for Núñez with a further 20 million Euros in bonuses – potentially linked to appearances and based on the forward performing in a successful team.

Núñez, who did not feature and was left out of Uruguay’s squad for their game against Panama, is currently in the Spanish capital Madrid and will fly in to England on Monday to undergo a medical.

The Real Madrid forward was convicted of conspiring to blackmail a French team ex-colleague over a sex tape. A Versailles court handed him a one-year suspended jail sentence.

Soccer star Karim Benzema dropped an appeal in a legal battle that started in 2015 because he was “exhausted” by the process, his lawyer said on Saturday.

A court in Versailles last year found the France and Real Madrid forward guilty of complicity in the blackmail of a former colleague over a sex tape.

He was given a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to pay a €75,000 ($84,150) fine.

Hugues Vigier, Benzema’s lawyer, told French sports daily L’Equipe that the appeal withdrawal “endorses a ruling of condemnation and apparently of guilt… but this is not the reality.”

“Karim Benzema will always claim his innocence in this case and he never wanted to participate in a blackmail operation against Mathieu Valbuena,” he added, referring to the former France national team player involved in the case.

What was the sex-tape case?
Benzema first received preliminary charges in November 2015.

He was one of five people put on trial over the blackmail attempt of Valbuena.

Benzema was accused of conspiring with other suspected blackmailers to pressure Valbuena over a sexually explicit video stolen from the latter’s phone.

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is being considered to replace Mauricio Pochettino as Paris Saint-Germain’s head coach, The Telegraph’s Jason Burt reports.

Jose Mourinho is one of the most successful managers to grace the game of football. He has lifted trophies at every club he’s managed since taking over at Porto in 2002 – his third job – bar Tottenham Hotspur, and even then he was dismissed days before their Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City.

Mourinho is a serial winner, though, his reputation has taken a slight knock over the years with troubled spells at Manchester United and Tottenham. Determined as ever though, the 59-year-old has regained some of his old magic in starting something special at Roma.

He has guided the Italian side to European success and they look to be working towards even better things in Serie A.

However, PSG are now considering the Portuguese coach with Mauricio Pochettino expected to be sacked in the coming days as the club oversees major changes.

After 19 trophy-laden years of being the owner of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovich released a statement saying his ‘goodbyes’ to the club.

The statement from Chelsea’ official website reads:

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe is now the highest-paid footballer in the world.

The 23-year-old France international recently signed a new three-year deal with PSG that will keep him at the capital club until 2025. His decision comes after he was widely expected to join La Liga champions Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 after his current deal would run out on June 30.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken about the fitness of integral midfielders Thiago and Fabinho as the Reds prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Thiago managed 45 minutes on the Premier League’s final day but had to be taken off at half time due to a calf problem. It would be a big miss for Liverpool if Thiago was kept out of Saturday’s match as he has been brilliant under Klopp this season.

Fabinho, meanwhile, picked up a thigh injury during the 2-1 victory over Aston Villa earlier in May. This meant he was absent for the league wins over Southampton and Wolves, as well as the FA Cup final triumph against Chelsea.

Fabinho has a huge impact on the way Liverpool play, just like Thiago. He sits in front of the defence, allowing his fellow midfielders and both wing-backs to get forward.

Ahead of the trip to Paris this weekend, Klopp spoke about the feeling in the Liverpool camp, as well as Thiago and Fabinho’s fitness.

“The mood is good, very good,” Klopp said (via Liverpool Echo). “Really excited about being here now. Getting a feeling for the stadium, for the location and it’s all good.

“Looks good for both Thiago and Fabinho. Fabinho trained completely normal, Thiago trained yesterday with the team, will train today and we will go from there.

“It’s not the only motivation for Mo. It’s normal that he wants to put things right, we didn’t forget what happened that time, it’s just a while ago and it’s not that I will show a movie of the game tomorrow as motivation. That doesn’t make sense. It might be one reason, but not the only reason.”

Klopp then spoke about who is the ‘favourite’ to lift the trophy between Liverpool and Los Blancos.

“I don’t know who the favourite is,” he admitted. “If you look at history of the other team and the way Real Madrid celebrate comebacks – their comebacks are crazy – I’d say from my point of view is Real Madrid.

“But actually I want us to be thinking on the same level, being completely ourselves. If we are on the top of our game then we are difficult to play. That’s my only concern.”

Manchester City’s new striker Julian Alvarez has proved why the Sky Blues paid around £14million for the Argentinian from River Plate in January.

City completed the signing of the 22-year-old forward earlier this year but Alvarez returned to River Plate on loan, with the striker set to link up with Pep Guardiola’s side in the summer. Alvarez, in action for The Millionaires on Wednesday night, scored six goals during an 8-1 win over Peruvian side Alianza Lima in the group stages of the Copa Libertadores.

Alvarez scored hat-tricks in both halves of the tie. His first half hat-trick came in the space of 26 minutes, netting in the 15 th , 18 th and 41 st minutes of the tie, with the third, a 25-yard strike being the pick of the bunch.
