Thanks for the help. Would look into flexmax 80a . Any idea on price range
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 6:29pm On Feb 25, 2018
The bigger the panels the better cheesy.
You could get a bigger charge controller of 80A like Fangusun flexmax 80A or Midnite classic of 90A. You could also split the panels... 6 on the itracer and 2 on a 40A EPSOLAR (this I have cheesy)
samnaija:
Are the panels on the large size. Because the epsolar states 1600watts for max power. And the 8 in number. Do you suggest I return them for smaller sized panels. Will appreciate need to make a decision.
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 5:33pm On Feb 25, 2018
This is dicey... But if d distance btw array n charge controller is not long and you can get 16mm cables,
then I recommend parallel
samnaija:
The panels 320watts Voc is 45.07v. They are 8 in number. Tnks

What is the Voc of the panels? U can get this info from the name plate. What is the wattage of each panel and how many panels in total?
samnaija:
Guys a 24v 500ah system. What's the best panel configuration. If your are going to use12/24/48v epsolar mmpt charge controller 60a. The max power is 1600 watts for 24v system. Is it better parallel all panels or double the PV volts.

Wow. Yours is super. I'm currently doing 200watts. Its safe to conclude that I'm losing batteries, cos the 10amps can't do anything.

My wife is on my neck and since we work to take care of the family.

If the batteries start showing, signs of being low, I'll put on the gen.

My aim is to increase my system by end of march, 2018.

I'll get 2 more 300 watts panels to take my system from 600watts panels to 1200 watts panel

Davodyguy,
You are right the sky is very cloudy and I am only getting 232w fortunately my 'convenience loads' are less than 180w so net my battery is charging a little.

Look at it this way, you a filling a bucket at a volume flow rate of 10m3/s and draining at 15m3/s....net you are depleting your reserve. For mains, the inverter takes enough power from the grid(we can say the grid power is unlimited comparatively) to power the load and charge the batteries.

I have an analogy meter that tells me if the batteries are being charged or discharged and by how much depending on the needle direction.

For light loads like TV, fans and lights, I use a small inverter of less than 20k but very efficient while I use my mustpower 3kva for heavy loads like AC, pumping machine, iron when needed.

See pics below
davodyguy:
Hello chief niyi and Dmerciful

It rained heavily last night and the effect is seen on the sun right now, very poor now in Lagos

My Panel is sending 3-4Amp to the batteries.

I want to use the inverter now and still allow the Panels to continue to charge. My question is if I load the batteries now, will the load be on the batteries by draining them or it would be like normal electricity that charges batteries and also supplies power without depleting my batteries?

I hope you get my question

NiyiOmolyunade Sir
I have similar issue with epsolar itracer struggling to track max power point when the panel voltage was 106v Vs battery voltage of 25v. Reading through the manual it is recommended that PV voltage should be twice battery voltage so I changed my configuration to 2*3 so that Vmax is BTW 52v and 60v and since then there has been improved stability and improved harvest. I sold a fangpusun flexmax to someone and he complained that the performance was low compared to his Atracer 40A epsolar, I asked him to send it back and I experimented with different PV voltages and realized according to the manual, pv voltage of times 2 battery voltage is best for the flexmax provided ur cable size is thick enuf. Now he is very happy using it and he now install for others using this standard. So different voltages for different controllers
NiyiOmoIyunade:
I saw your prior post RE: Flames panels performance but I decided to keep quiet on it as many factors from battery SoC, mounting angle to orientation to shading to ambient weather, temperature and cloud cover and as you rightly pointed out quaity of CC used e.t.c affect yields.

I have had several opportunites to compare the performance of MorningStar vs. EP Solar side by side and the MorningStar consistently gives about 30% extra yield but bear in mind it costs twice as much sha grin MorningStar will lock to a Max power point and maintain amps output even as cloud cover e.t.c changes but EP Solar would just be jumping up and down and picking a lower yield point to settle on.

I was able to sample the Fangpusun series thanks to JUO and they do give far better performance than EP Solar as per MPPT tracking and amps output but ultimately I decided to go with my trusty MorningStar of which I know it and its capabilities in and out and have also attended a lot of their technical training e-sessions. The Fangpusun interestingly comes in at a lower price point than EP Solar.

Talk to JUO for supplies of the MorningStar or Fangpusun as with him you are almost sure to get the best prices available locally. If you wish to import a MorningStar CC and save about 20k with a 2 week wait then I may be able to help you but you have to pre-pay grin

You will always do better with the premium vs. china origin CCs but don't forget price vs performance. Someone here also has been offering the Midnite Classic at what seems to me an impossible price so you may wish to explore that route... but before you buy a new CC be sure to eliminate other system bottlenecks that may be giving you poor performance

It appears the vaster majority of people here are Midnite CC fans and they swear by their Midnite's performance but as for me and my house, we will stick with the MorningStar we know and love and trust grin grin grin
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 8:36am On Feb 24, 2018
To make a comparative analysis you have to keep certain variables constant. I did not change my loads to get this harvest infact nobody was at home just my regular loads on inverter. Also you did not question the numbers shared for the premium panels but you want to question the conditions surrounding this one grin
Barezzi:
This is not entirely true, as harvest is proportional to usage.
You squeeze every juice from your array cos house energy usage far outweighs production, hence your fantastic efficiency numbers.

it would have been wise for you to keep shut and get on with the TB discussion rather than lecture us on what we already know Mr Minister of Education. Taking the heat off sometimes aint bad. Youre asking for correlation. When ever you drive from lagos to portharcourt don't stop to take a break and eat eba and better soup keep on driving till you suffocate. Coz you own a car and others use public transport doesnt make you a robot. You must divert to eat. Youre asking correlation

Youve actually dragged just a few comments that isnt even up to four peoples opinion and made it a case. Maybe na you own this thread i guess. You can eat the thread then.
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 10:52pm On Feb 23, 2018
If I'm told the premium panels are 8%-10% more efficient than the tier 2 or 3 panels then I will be convinced of significant yield difference. For instance the pic attached is my harvest today from a 1.5kw sunshine panels. Meaning if I have 6kw of sunshine, I will be doing 21.2kwh......now compare and contrast! All in all, the difference does not justify the cost difference, my opinion though
NiyiOmoIyunade:
This then is the price vs. performance paradox that we face in deciding to go with the Premium or Value offering.

KieKie can attest to how many times we haggled bitterly over me trying to get a good price point for supply of Solar World panels over the last 2 years - the guy would give me a quote and I would squeeze him hard for more discounts until he would abruptly end the discussion in frustration.

Using advertised prices on this forum for the larger size 300w range panels, I estimate the price of Premium Tier1 to at least 260naira per watt and a good Value Tier2 to at least 180naira per watt.

If I give the Tier 2 60% efficiency and the Tier 1 STC 77% or let's just say 80% I am still looking at the Tier 1 coming out more pricey. Again I would say 10 years forward is the usage horizon for solar panels because one would always want to upgrade to the latest tech even if the product in use was still performing.

This is the dilemma I face every day in making buying decisions for myself and clients especially those with a large budget. I have come to decide that it's mostly an emotional decision in the end hence I bought two MorningStar units for myself because I believe I can rely absolutely on them even though one Midnite Classic 96A may have done the job at 60% of the cost but simply because of the remote possibility of fan failure in the Midnite I refuse to use it.

Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 8:22pm On Feb 18, 2018
If your cc to battery breaker trips when there is no short.-circuit then it means it's not properly sized and this could cause cc failure. If it were EPSOLAR cc it would have positively failed.
You seemed to have experienced what is called solar flare where the luminosity is more than 1000w/m2 and as such panels give more than their rated capacity as their capacity is usually rated at 1000w/m2.
Key take out is for you to size ur breakers correctly
Ijeoma660:
Please who can explain this phenomenon.

I experienced this upsurge about two days ago before midday. It kept tripping my CC to Battery bank outgoing breakers. I kept closing it back, then it tripped the PV to CC incoming breaker. After which I allowed the system to relax.

PS: I looked out of the window and noticed the sun wasn't as bright as there were scattered low lying clouds in the sky. But the sun's intensity was so intense through the edge of the clouds with shadows showing clear and distinct outlines around objects!

Still wondering why...
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 10:32pm On Feb 16, 2018
With your array and battery bank... You should get longevity cos the stress on individual battery is low and enuf array to ensure full charge daily. When I grow up sha cheesy
NiyiOmoIyunade:
The plan is not to need new batteries for the next 5 years at least. grin

Fingers crossed on how the future will actually turn out!!!

If I can get battery longevity results like Oga GeorgeD then I will be a happy man indeed
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 10:14pm On Feb 16, 2018
With this kind of battery bank,do you really need lithium batteries?
NiyiOmoIyunade:
Your observations are correct same as Oga KieKie - Flooded batteries kind of have lower voltage profiles than sealed maimtenance free batteries and their Voltage vs. State of Charge charts typically reflect same.

I also noticed that this apparent low voltage is more pronounced in the Mercury Flooded I first had than in my last set of US Batteries for example but I have no hard data to support this.

Interesting that you also are getting disillusioned with Flooded batteries as a quite a few people have been on here - for me Lithium is the next port of call once I wrap my head around all the complexities of a BMS and battery balancing.

To eliminate undercharging issues with your Flooded battery bank please Can you confirm that you give your batteries a proper daily charge? What is your absorb voltage setpoint? How many hours do your batteries spend in absorb daily?

Currently I have 16 pieces of 12v 200ah Gel batteries in a 48v 800ah setup - my voltage generally stays around 50.6 worst case by 6am in the morning. If the Madam had used microwave a lot the night before or the 2hp sitting room AC then I could see 50.3volts - once on a cloudy day where I could not finish absorb and still had heavy overnight usage, I saw 49.75volts by 6am in the morning and mind you I ALWAYS use the 1hp bedroom AC overnight.

So I remove anywhere between 160ah to 260ah between 6pm and 6am daily from a 800ah bank and the voltage stays within the 70 to 80% State of Charge mark.

So far so good excellent batteries and they were sourced from ICelllPower through JUO.

Transformer types are more rugged... Just the idle consumption
kiekie1:
I typed 100% ! Its due to distortions you get especially when you load above 50% .. Its not really obvious for those running average loads , its ruggedity can't still be compared to transformer based pure sine wave inverters.. Thanks!!
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 7:09pm On Feb 16, 2018

kiekie1:
Ooo sorry for the disappointment on your konga supplies .. You are more safe because you paired up Gennex hybrid "par a & b" .. Its a bit more affordable considering the procurement cost of a 10kva schneider , victron etc without adding extra cost of mppt yet ! It exceeds a million to be factual ... If you operate within safe load range , your inverter system should serve you for years not minding its not 100% pure sinewave !! Cheer's
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 7:00pm On Feb 16, 2018
Too much charging current deteriorates batteries faster esp when you are charging with mains and solar, tendency to b charging with over high charge current exist.
Also at lower input voltage of 85v coupled with high charging current due to low battery, the stress on the axpert will be massive and might cause premature failure and as such always install a decent stabilizer before the inverter
earthrealm:
wow, if a transformerless 5kva axpert system has 45w idle consumption, makes me believe the 135w idle consumption rating for the 4kva prag/mustpower.
the axpert is really a master piece, i wish it could handle my resistive loads, the wide input range is a big plus 85v to 280v ac, and massive charging current

I did some tweaking of my solar array from 3*2 to 2*3 as my itracer is finding it difficult to track the maximum power point quickly on 3*2 config. i did the change this evening so i will observe tomorrow if there is improvement. My panels are fence level so i change easily grin. I love the beauty of the axpert though
Barezzi:
grin grin About 45w each if I remember correctly. When i get home next month, i'll confirm.
About 90w*13hrs=1.2kwh by daybreak. Not much, considering my pv array.

Yes, I have 2 Genex Axpert inverters in parallel mode.

Each inverter has a 2.6kw array. They've been churning out amps like a demented coyote on heat.
