How do you know each of ur panel is 24v? Cos that installer said so? Do you have a pic of the panel nameplate?

Connecting in series will ensure ur system wakes up on time and sleeps late wrt sun rise and sunset however since your system is 12v and most 250w panels are 35V Voc it means that connecting in parallel is fine but you need to get an mppt controller. This has the ability to convert excess voltage to current just to put it simply. Contact me for this controller... See my signature

What's the implications of connecting in series? Pls bear in mind that my Inverter is just 12 v and the maximum load by my calculations is 150 watts

He is not a professional installer! get an mppt cc and connect those two panels in series and you are good. better still patronise installer from this forum and have rest of mind.

So much confusion everywhere ooo!

So I got a professional installer to take a look at my set up and confirm why the battery is not charging.

First thing he said is that instead of using 2 250watts panels, I should have gone for 4 150 watts panels, because this according to him, gives me more amperage - 8 amps each translating to 32 amps. He said the battery (220 ah) requires 22 amps to charge while I can use the excess amps to power my appliances.

He claims the 2 panels I have presently generates max of 12 amps which he claims can never charge the battery full.

He also tested the voltage coming thru the CC and got ~36 volts, this he said is too much for the CC as it's designed for 12-24 volts and claims the excess volts is not healthy for the CC and it's preventing it from working optimally.

I had him speak with my installer and he said why he used 250 watts is to get 24 volts which can be converted to more current to charge the battery.

Both of them just left me confused with their technical jargons but both agree I need to change theCC to MPPT.

When the professional guy says I need to add one more 250 watts panel to be able to get a full charge on the battery daily, my installer claims changing the CC to MPPT will fix the problem as it will convert excess volts to current which is sufficient to charge the battery full.

So house, I'm really so confused

In all honesty, deep down, I have always suspected the charge controller.

I have no problems changing it if it is definitely it's the cause of the problem.

Can I be sure I'll enjoy up to 15 hrs (the battery' s full charge capacity )if I get a new charge controller ? Which do you recommend ?

Then, do I really also need to change the inverter too. I think the inverter is ok, it's one of the best out there for home use

It has earthing and I think it's sufficient given the fact that it was able to powder a load while connecting live and earth

Please I have a general question for those electrically inclined.

I visited a location where the occupant wanted solar installed - he had just moved into the house and there was a lightening arrestor on the roof but we were unable to verify the location of the buried earth rod or earthing/ground point and apparently the wire from the lightening arrestor ran inside the walls vs. externally on the surface. We called the building manager who insisted there was an earth rod buried in the ground but he didn't also know where it was - the house distribution panel also had a earth bar and several 1.5mm/2.5mm green earth wires but no substantial 6mm or greater size conductor that would indicate a direct link to the buried earth rod/point.

Being dressed for the office, I was unwilling to enter the roof to trace from the lightening arrestor so I whipped out my trusty Fluke and ran a few quick checks;

On an AC socket in the house, I measured Line to Neutral Voltage at 232volts AC
Neutral to Earth voltage about 4-15 volts AC
Line to Earth voltage about 205volts AC - I was also able to light up a test lamp (light bulb) by connecting the Live Wire of the test lamp to Live point on the wall socket and the Neutral Wire of the test lamp to the Earth point on the wall socket.

Are these tests sufficient to conclude that a earth rod is in place and functioning? I am not really interested in the full fancy tests measuring the ground vs. earth rod resistance and loop impedance and such ... I just want extra comfort that the house in question has a earth rod in place and it is functional regardless of whether the installation was up to code or not.

The original Emonpi hardware goes for over 150 pounds and is originally made by them to measure only AC, temperature and humidity. Kudos.

With this your innovation, one can monitor generation and disconnect non-essential loads when generation is poor. Will you be kind enough to acquire, program and probably sell a unit? Or do a step by step procedure and the link to get the required parts.

I just want to be able to monitor pv generation and battery voltage remotely in order to turn OFF power gulping appliances. I already have Sonoff switch for remote ON/OFF.

for now the system monitors only one of my PV array, I am yet to receive items I require to DIY a victron VE direct to USB cable. I need 3 I have just 1. hence the second PV array and battery monitors are not yet being monitored.

the evil pv switch-off before battery error caught up with me and one of my cc is toast.
i learnt the only savvy guy in alaba is forming too busy and doesn't seem ready to devote
enough time to diagnose and fix. i guess he has too much big fish on his plate already.
i will be grateful if you can take a look and see what can be done.

i have a 45a ms cc, which i connected 4 x 250w mono panels in series, back in the days, and i think the high vmp blew it.was truthful and contacted morning star corp and they said its not covered under waranty, as i may hv exceeded the vmp rating

I already shared a way that problem can be resolved. a double pole breaker controls the PV positive to cc as well as battery positive to cc that way both power source goes off same time.

I was complaining before that my charge controller might be toast, because i had disconnected it from the battery in the day time without disconnecting the solar input first.

I am please to report that the charge controller made it

My batteries are still dead though, 200ah batteries have now become 10ah batteries

I suspect that it is due to the wretched inverter the installer supplied (soccer power ). Honestly, these installers don't really care about you, they just want to make a sale and that's it.

I have been doing alot of research on battery float usage and cyclic usage. In cyclic usage, it is recommended that you charge up the batteries to around 14.1 for gell and 14.4-14.8 for AGM batteries, before reverting back to a float voltage of 13.6-13.8. The inverter that i have only does a float charge at 13.8, same with the charge controller. Both never hit absorb at all.

I bought a 12v inverter to try to charge each battery separately, up to 14.1volts, but it seems like it may be a case of "too little, too late"!

I don't have money now, so i will have to buy 4 cheap batteries in the meantime, cause there really is no use of buying expensive batteries when you don't have the right equipment to ensure that they are well taken care off.

My next upgrade after that would be to buy a Must 48v inverter that employs charging pertinent to cyclic usage, giving me the option to select battery type as well. That way, i'd be sure that my batteries hit the absorb voltage every night.

I think desulphators are scams...balancers however are highly OK and needed

lol nice exchange, for me i would recommend the following, in order of importance

1. old , SULPHATED BATTERIES - DESULPHATOR is primary, balancer secondary
2. new batteries - balancer primary, desulphator secondary.

has anyone tried hooking up a desulphator and balancer on the same batt bank?..that would be the best combo, if they can function ok, without interferring and cancelling out each other

You and Makavele are right... Only the compressor is quoted. I bought 1hp thinking its 750w only to power and it's consuming 1125w....i was like wtf!

Op should get a Mikano generator as that kind of load is not economical with inverter

nope sir, you are wrong, makavele is right, the 1.5hp written on a 1.5hp ac is actually just the rating of the compressor at 100% efficiency, the energy consumed by the internal components arent stated, such as the blower fans, and inefficiency of the ac etc, so its safer to assume 1500w,, my 2hp ac has 2800w as max energy consumption and 1800 as avg abi min consumption, so looking at that you can see its way over the 2hp energy nameplate.

@op, get a good inverter with a good surge rating, 5kva mustpower has a surge rating of 12kw, as a 1.5hp ac has a surge load 3 to 8secs duration in excess of 4500w when starting

It's annoying when I see you lie unnecessarily on this forum. When the ep ever (I tracer) I bought from you developed a fault what effort did you make to bring it back to life? When I called on you to show my disappointment you declined and never gave me any support. Honestly I forgave you as I had to forgo that cc which I bought from you at 150,000 and 5,000 for transport making it 155,000. I promised myself I'd rather stick to my pwm cc than go for the so called ep solar cc (I tracer) or whatever you call it. Pls watch what you say on this forum bcus we aren't kids.
