For DC, there is positive and negative. Also the strength of a chain is the strength of its weakest link. Use 10mm or more for both sides.

I have a question for the gurus in the house. Can one use a cable of smaller gauge for the neutral line compared to the live in a solar setup between pv and cc

Why i ask is that am trying to setup about a 1.5kw pv on mppt cc for a 24v battery bank. Plan is to use 10mm for live and then 4mm for the neutral between pv & cc. Distance will be 25ft (30ft max).

If its standing fan, qasa rechargeable fan is good. That's what I use.

I have a lot of opportunist loads that I run during the day like Water Heaters, Water Pump, Fridge, Freezer, Induction Cooker, Iron and Aircon.

My entire house is 100% off grid between 8am and 4pm. After 4pm, the Aircon, Iron and Induction cooker revert to grid power while the Water Heaters and Water Pump remain on Inverter power but are switched off. Fridge and Freezer remain ON on a two hours alternating cycle till 8am

I have a 20KWH battery bank from which I draw not more than 7KWH overnight.

I concur. You can connect the old and new since their specifications are pretty close. Just not that the max PV current will be that of the 250w which is OK. Difference btw 250w n 260w is marginal. Install all ur panels. Another solution will be to have a separate cc for the old panels n another for the new panels.

you did not specify if panels are mixed that is poly mixed with mono.

i assume you are using poly panels

please go with config 1. with ur MPPT

ur CC will probably pick the lowest values (i.e. Vmp=30.1, Imp=8.31, Isc=8.71, Voc=36.4 instead of Vmp=31.4, Imp=8.37, Isc=8.94, Voc=38.4)
at that rate you are gurranteed of harvesting steady wattage for longer time particularly during raining season.
@48V battery bank you need all the panels.

Here is the picture of the CC working. Couldn't get the load A, because my inverter is connected directly to the battery.
Though I watched some video on youtube which stat that the CC is just a rip-off, because it doesn't have an Inductor, and would waste energy.
Any Idea the effect it might have on the battery?
If it isn't good, I will be ok if you could suggest a CC.

The Atracer of 20A (Tracer2210A) can do this job perfectly. He just need a 50AH deep cycle battery, 150W panels and the CC Tracer2210A . The CC is fully time programmable.

Won't even need a timer switch if the CC has load control, like the Ep Solar MPPT controllers (IT3415ND, IT4415ND and IT6415ND). The periods it powers the DC loads on and off are programmable. You could even run multiple time schedules or base it on sunlight times.

Are you sure the cables are 16mm? I am talking of the core diameter and not the insulation diameter. If its actually 16mm then check that the panel inclination is about 7 degrees to the horizontal facing south...you are likely to have more harvest but know that harvest depends on the load (state of charge of battery) on the controller. Also use timer switch to put on ur refrigerating loads between 10am-3pm that way solar does more of the powering and as such appreciable power is harvested from the sun.

@ DMerciful...the solar panels are located 90 feet from the charge controller.They are connected with 16mm cables , though the pannels are 6pcs of 200w, connected 2 series x 3 parrallel , 1 harvest a max voltage of 70v and current 9 amps on good days to my 40amps epsolar tracer-A charge controller which charge to my 24v battery bank and also inverter,

@dapsyra & bigrovar : Can I also use same battery equalizer for my 4 batteries , 24 v setup? or are there other devices for 24v setup since it clearly states the device you recommended is for 48v setup.

Give more info about ur batteries like brand, how long they've been in service, ur average depth of discharge, ur inverter type etc.

Hello Gurus, I need some clarifications.
I recently observed that my 4pcs of 12V deep cycle batteries connected to my 24v inverter becomes drained to almost trip-off voltage.

My bank gets charged either from the solar panels or Nepa light so by sunset they are 26.6V on good harvest days. I run my petrol generator from 7pm to 11pm if no Nepa, but from 11pm to 7am the batteries power the 3 energy bulbs and 2 fans , max of 200w.

I tested the voltage of each battery and observed that 3 where above 12.3V but one was 10.5V, do I need to replace the 10.5v battery as this could end up draining the system, will this allow the system to retain much of the harvest from my panels so I can use it in the night without discharging all the juice from the batteries before morning?

I know the answer may be obviouse ,but guys ...recession is biting hard so do forgive and also give me all DIY options too for preventive measures

Any device rated 12v can use even a ship battery provided the battery is 12v. The load draws the current it is designed to draw!

You can use the battery with a 12v inverter but know that car battery is not designed for deep cycle operation. If its a rechargeable fan that uses 12v battery, then you can connect d wires that go to d internal battery to ur car battery and there will be no need for inverter..... cheesy

From experience it is better to avoid series-parallel configuration for batteries. better to go with series and if higher capacity is required, go with higher capacity batteries. the complexities of current flow in series-parallel battery networks especially when it exceed 24v makes the arrangement susceptible to early failure

Hello Pdozie,

It all depend on your battery configuration. Either one or two equalizers can work.

If you have eight 12v batteries in a "2 strings of 4 " arrangement, then your require 2 equalizers.

But you can make do with only 1 equalizer if you arrange the batteries in a "1 string of 2 batteries" formation. This arrangement require you to parallel two 12v batteries and then four in series. See attached image,

Gurus in the house kindly recommend a 'cheap' modem/router with remote management or Dynamic DNS that I can use to monitor my renewable energy system from anywhere over the internet. The router is the remaining piece for me to go live
