Nice tips...thanks
Wazari:
Hi Guys, I hope everyone is having a Happy Holidays.
This thread has been a wonderful source for people desiring energy independence and has been very useful to me. I have always thought the most important consideration when deciding to go "green" isn't generation or storage but energy conservation and efficient consumption. In other words, its more important to me that my appliances do not waste energy than it is to get another PV panel or increase my battery bank. On my journey towards energy independence, I have picked up a few tips and i want to share them:

1. Laptop chargers consume substantial power when not connected to the Laptop, do not leave them plugged into sockets!
2. Switch off all appliances from the wall socket when not been used.
3. Clean the dust off your freezer coils at least once a year.
4. Fridge and Freezer should have at least a 3cm space from the wall to allow better heat extraction from the coils.
5. Put bottles of water into freezer if you have the space (helps to keep freezer cooler for longer and also improves condenser duty cycle)
6. Use Eco mode on your TV if available and consider reducing screen brightness.
7. Avoid using a UPS if running an off grid system (inverter most likely already has a automatic transfer switch).
8. Consider buying devices with the highest energy star rating within budget.
9. Do not buy devices just because they advertise low wattage on the box. Some cheap LED bulbs have a 0.2 Power Factor. Research every little device or appliance. I find that known brands generally give more correct technical details.
10. Avoid using industrial type standing fans like OX. They are very durable but inefficient.
11. Get a domestic watt meter (eg Kill-a-watt) to monitor your appliances.

Pls share the tips you have been using for efficient energy consumption.

Are you sure you need to increase your PV strength even if you need to be pumping water for them neighbours? I would think that 4kw system is enough to handle that with excess esp if ur system hits absorption by 1pm. You can pump from 1pm....cos of cost implication sha..
You know solar is additive, there is always that desire to go higher if the funds are available, looool
abunafiu:
@javid4me, honestly speaking I no fit comment.
You have done very well sir.
Will comment after reading the wind turbine link.
Congratulations.

I am sure you are now feeling like hitting a Phcn pole... Lol.
My current set up of 4kw solar array, 4kw inverter and 48v450ah Trojan Batts is firing well too. Hit absorption as early as 1pm. 16 to 17kwh daily harvest. Location is Ilorin.
I now live off grid.

@Earthrealm, let Me answer your question from the other thread. I have been considering a DC pump but I will get one next year. I decided to use the 0.5hp due to cost.
About the discharge rate of the pump I have not been able to get an accurate measurement. I assume it takes approximately 50 min to fill my 2000 liter tank. I am not sure of this sha. But I am sure it take less than 1hr to fill the 2k liter Tank.
My next plan is to increase my PV strength to 5kw bcoz of pumping water for the neighbors whose prayers keep coming all day.
"Oga how much be this solar if I wan do"...the rest na 1 minute silence. Lol

What can I say? This is just glorious! This is for politicians o.....Jezz! Really enviable! You need to sell electricity to your neighbours....this is too much for 1 house, loool cheesy
Congratulations...this is a classical case of anything worth doing is worth doing well. Thumbs up!
Javid4me:

And many other so numerous to mention. All ur efforts helped n I thank you and now hope I can also inspire someone

It took me some time to acquire all the items to upgrade to SOLAR, all because of long throat i have.

It is about three days old and the harmattan haze has not helped but was able to get a maximum of 2480watts sometime, giving me the hope that without the haze, better days are ahead.

Your comment, criticism, guidance and questions are welcome.
Thank you

To God be the glory, i joined the league of evergreen family, with the inspiration of the Great GeorgeD1 frm page 1 till date, the knowledge shared from all the gurus in the house. My sincere appreciation goes to d great of the great Dmerciful for his encouragement, advice and 100% support day and night from the day 1 of planning, procurement and execution of the project.

I managed to purchase 4pcs of 200w of sunshine panels, imported my itracer 60a, MT50, watt meter, circuit breaker, surge protector and desulfator one after the other as cash flows. i have existing 2kva bluegate inverter, 2pcs of 100ah batteries.

When i cudnt afford the cost of installer with customise roof rack and disappointment frm another cheaper installer, i summoned courage to DIY the solar installation, to God be the glory i successfully mount it on the roof myself with the support of my frnd electrician. I upload the pictures of my setup. Thanks u all.
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 12:50pm On Dec 24, 2016
The Sun is towards the southern hemisphere now so due to the angle of inclination you're getting a cos¢P where ¢ is the angle of inclination and P is the panel total capacity. That's why commercial solar systems are mounted on single or dual axis trackers for max harvest.

Science/Technology › Re: How Efficient Are Solar Electricity Power Systems? by DMerciful(m):
Solar is not as expensive as being portrayed and besides NEPA is relatively cheap because it is not available and you cannot run generator 24/7 and compare it to solar apart from being highly inconvenient. I installed a 1000W solar system in May 2016 and i have not run generator since then neither has anything failed. People meet quacks who knows little about solar designs and when they are given poor systems they start making generalizations that solar doesnt last.
Start using solar and you will never go back...yes its additive cos it feels great to control your own energy.
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by DMerciful(m): 10:29am On Dec 17, 2016
In as much as i like providing quick info on this forum, take your time to read previous pages and be wiser for it. after reading you will find yourself calibrating the said 'installer' that said you dont need a charge controller. When i joined i went through all previous pages and i am wiser for it...thanks to all the gurus in the house.
Papishi:
Good morning house. I got an installer in my area, we agreed on installing a 130W pvc, 100AH solar battery, 5 DC bulbs.
But the amusing stuff was that he said we don't need charge controllers.
He also advised I use my Famcare inverter instead of sticking my plan of going DC. I need an advice house cos I don't wanna go for what I may regret.
NB: I have a plan of upgrading ma panels and maybe batteries next year.

Dont go for locally made inverter as their charging system is most atimes poor and will ruin your batteries within a short time. Go for foreign known brands and they are all-in-all cheaper. This is not the time to be patriotic or politically correct!
CoolKizzy:
please house, someone is convincing me to go for a locally constructed inverter. how safe is it? and does it affect health and duration of the batteries? I'm not using solar, just charging with mains and generator. what are the pros and cons of such inverter? a 3000w inverter.

Just like complexities in living things where a kidney failure can cause the failure of the entire body so it is for a system that combines almost all functions. a failure in one section on the unit can render everything useless grin. Besides i like the flexibility i enjoy with separate unit blocks......especially for renewable enthusiast like myself who loves trying new things cheesy cheesy cheesy
Longevity of inverter depends on usage conditions like loading, surges, stabilizer protection etc. A solid inverter can fail prematurely if abuse.....fyi non of my inverters have failed...all functions intact.
