Our collision with the body that formed our moon should not be as big as that Mars could have witnessed.

The body must have been nearly half the size of Mars to powerful enough to diminish the planets size, severe it's magnetic field and slice it's atmosphere leaving the water and possibly life forms on it at the mercy of Solar Wind like you rightly postulated.

The scar on Mars points towards a humongous collision..

I think understanding what really happened to the Red planet would give us incentive on how to prevent Earth from suffering such fate anytime soon..

Alongside Mars having an ancient ocean before, it is also thought mars had a much thick atmosphere like earth..

What ever murdered those Thick atmosphere took the water with it.

My best guess is a Planetary Collision, Mars might have been a bit bigger than it is now, a collision with another planetary body e.g Asteroid Can really dismantle Mars' rich atmosphere remember Asteroids react like nuclear bomb on impact.

So i think It was a collision which evaporated the Waters in the process, peeled off most of Mars' atmosphere until we are left with what we have now..

Debris from that collision must have contributed to the debris in the asteroid belt..

Take a look at the picture of Mars i put up there, You noticed the huge scar on the planets surface?..

Might be remnants from the impact.. ...

Mars did have a very thick atmosphere before,but it was slowly lost due to solar winds which eroded the atmosphere, we are very lucky on earth because we have a strong magnetic field that deflects this solar wind and radiation before it reaches the surface. Mars has a frozen core which makes it defenseless to these solar winds,that's y humans won't be able to live on Mars surfaces except it's underground or in strong bunkers orelse we would have cancer...even astronauts and pilots ar at the risk of these...

I love science,however I think science should look beyond this planet for clues of the evolution of all forms of life on the planet. I am not referring to a god,but possible migration of bacterial,different DNA that seeded the plant some billions of years ago. I wouldn't be surprised the warm holes have a huge part to play.

You know, 2000years ago people taught earth was the center of the universe, 500 years ago science just answered the question of what goes up must come down in the form of gravity, a 200years ago,science answered the question of life's diversity and ecological distribution in the form of evolution, 100years ago,science answered the question about the constant speed of light in a vacuum and the underlining mechanisms of gravity in the form of the theories of relativity, less than 50years ago,science discovered that the universe had a beginning and it started 13.7billion years ago evidently shown from the cosmic microwave background. Science is evolving, it hasn't answered all our questions, but as long as there are curious minds with a scientific procedures, we would finally get those answers not by believing in some fairytale God but through observation and experimentation

Let me tell you one absurd story.

My wife's father's pastor lost his wife in a ghastly accident. He told me they were together when she decided to buy something to cook dinner while he was preparing for service. He waited for about 3 hours and she didn't show up. He called her number but it was unavailable. Then he decided to go and look for her. When he got outside of the house, someone told him there had been a serious accident just in front of the house and told him the hospital to check. He then decided to go to the hospital to see for himself. The first body he was shown was that of his wife. Honestly, it was devastating. They've been married for years and have 5 kids together.

Now, while I was at the house(he came to my in-laws house), I over heard him telling some ladies that his wife appeared to him in a dream and told him that she is now in heaven. He also said that his wife told him that she was found pure and holy but wouldn't have made heaven because of the weave-on on her head but god forgave her and told him to warn women not to put on weave-on.
