There is more evidence that supports that the earth is Flat than there is for the earth being 6000years old. Get your facts straight, the earth is 4.6 billion years old.

As for morality, I must admit, its a hard question and not easy to answer, and i am pretty sure that different people would have different opinions on this but i watched NatGeoWild on a given sunday and i was inspired by what i saw, a baby elephant fell into a ditch and was struggling to come out, its herd (comprised of two mature elephants) were trying so hard to bring this baby elephant out but no prevail, then i saw another herd of elephants rushing from the other side to help out (apparently they saw what was going on and decided to lend a helping hand). A mature elephant now got into the ditch and was using its trunk to caress the baby elephant as the others were trying to drag it out(a move i read as telling the baby elephant to not be worried, everything would be ok), I was touched and inspired, my respect for those creatures went off the roof at that moment.

So what am i trying to say, well maybe we get our morality from the same place those elephants get theirs from, From the innate desire to LIVE peacefully, and help others in LIVING peacefully as well, and in doing so,hope that the same kindness would be shown unto you and your offsprings

As a scientist I know that science is actually studying the plan called nature. As a matter of fact science will be impossible if there was no design or plan. What do you think is called a formula? If you say F=kMm/r^2 you are actually referring to the natural design of attraction between two macro objects. When you say xx or xy in genetics you are referring to the design of sex assignment.

As at today April 2016 we have no means of measuring what started before the beginning of xyzt I.e space and time. We may have in the future. If we do we might be able to understand the purpose of the universe or multiverse.

My issue with that is what you call design or plan, you used the Newtonian formula of gravity, which described gravity as a force, I hope you know that gravity is the curvature of spacetime, because you see pattern in some chaotic event doesn't mean it has a purpose or it was designed, that's a fallacy.

And because you can ask a question in the English language doesn't make it reasonable, e.g what is the color of jealousy, or what is the purpose of the universe...it's like asking what is the purpose of a mountain or the purpose of mars or Pluto...There is no purpose, its just a cosmic accident

Your first premise is wrong, the universe doesn't show evidence of plan and design when it is very chaotic...objects slam into objects randomly,every second, three stars somewhere in the universe is exploding, asteroids collides with planets destroying whatever life form could be on it, galaxies collides,even ours is on a collision course with andromeda...that's a very chaotic universe, there is no plan or design observed

What is not obvious is the nature of God and why the universe was made and the purpose. We cannot know or measure what came before the big bang because x,y,z,t I.e space and time started with the bang. As a matter if fact, the expression "before" and after all stays within the xyz and t planes.Also all our perceptions and measurements are xyzt bound.

Now because science can't explain what happens before the big bang, doesn't mean an intelligence is behind it when obvious, the universe doesn't show signs of intelligibility. What it means is that science doesn't know and we should strive to know it and not assume before hand the answer, if that's how scientist of the past assumed answers to scientific questions,do you think you would have modern medicine that you depend on, or your mobile phone to communicate, or the internet to get on nairaland. No, the benefits of science is for all of mankind, and so when you try to undermine the scientific method by claiming they dnt know what happened before the big bang is just pure ignorance and it is called the god of the gaps argument.

I see you are aggravated about my statement, I ddnt mean to insult your personality, I just saw some flaws in the way you posed the questions and felt some basic understanding was missing. By no means was I attacking you personally. Just a quick point, Stephen hawking is a string physicist, and that means he is looking for how to solve the singularity problem, the incompatible nature of quantum mechanics and General relativity. The idea that he doesn't subscribe 100% to the big bang theory is in my opinion a false one and very laughable.

I don't argue with that, I am wondering why you wish to sit on the fence when it comes to Natural selection when we are closer than ever before...do you think there is any proof right now that would disprove the idea that the earth revolves around the sun?, would you say you won't subscribe to the idea until a better theory comes and disproves it?...please note I am not saying science is dogmatic, and anyone who understands the scientific method has to be open minded, but some aspects of science right now are so rock solid, that it would take a miracle to overturn them on their head. E.g Heliocentric model, Germ theory, and Natural selection...if you disagree, I want to hear your view

Hi Johnydon, i wasnt going to say anything on this thread because the OP lack some basic understanding about the scientific method, and great response by the way, but this part of your post got me thinking...so i wanna ask you, what do you define as absolute truth? and what makes you think that science doesnt have an open mind towards Evolution?

and also, if every single evidence that has been found points to Evolution, doesnt that mean Evolution is the closest to absolute truth Why do you feel science would be very wrong on that?

Well I dnt need that guide, before I make a moral judgement, I analyse the situation and look at the consequences of the choice, is it preventing a sentient being happiness?, if it was done to me,would I like it?,if I was in that shoe, what would I do?...after analysis,I can tend decide if something is morally wrong or not, I don't need a guide, I am not that hopeless

Look, i cant give a stand as to whether abortion is right or wrong because it is a very complicated matter, it depends on the context in which you mean, A raped woman who doesnt want the baby can have an abortion, i dont see anything morally wrong with that as long as the embryo hasnt gotten a well developed nervous system to feel pain. However the issue i was discussing was something different and not abortion, i dont know how that relates to the topic

Abortion is a different ball-game, the woman should decide whether she wants to have the baby or not, and if the law prohibits it, then the law should make provision for unwanted babies but when you have a law that dictates who you can love or not, thats just pure discrimination.

Good morning LoJ, I totally agree with you, i was just merely acknowledging the biological limitations to our inquiry, but by all means should we strive to know all we can about "REALITY".

I throw in the word "reality" because just by talking about the Multiverse, the Universe already seems small, and is just another stage of the evolution of reality, i am really keen on finding out where it all came from and how, REALITY that is, and everyone agrees (even the religious) that there are two possibilities to the beginning of reality.

a. Something has always existed
b. Something has to come from nothing

One has to be correct (we all can agree where the close-minded religious person would turn to), but both still are concepts that are very mysterious to the human brain.

The Great thing about science though is not only about the answers, but also the questions and the way we go about finding the answers, so i am glad we talk about these things and wonder and even if we never find out, just the act of asking these questions is an awesome experience.

The hypothesis of a multiverse and the quest for a greater understanding of the beginning of what you call reality, are independent. For the hypothesis of a multiverse to be investigated, it does not HAVE to answer all other scientific questions. So I don't see the reason, why Multiverses should not be examined, just because according to some, it may not answer this or that other question, which they hold more imporant.


I mean no offence, but this approach is unscientific. When you proclaim right from the beginning that some questions do not have answers, or that we can't have the answers, you give yourself only one option: to give up.

Back in the middle age. the understanding of earthquakes or the lightning, were inaccessible to men. Today, such phenomenon can be well explained.

So we should not assume that what we don't yet, is unknowable. Whatever is still unknown is just that, unknown. Let's investigate, and with time, passion and consistent efforts, we get a clearer light.

I clearly understand, but you misinterpret me, I never said that the multiverse wasn't an hypothesis we shouldn't consider, I only said there is no way we can test it for now and that keeps it in the realm of pseudoscience. I also meant that if we do test the hypothesis and find out its true, then string theory must be true and then it poses a whole different question, where did string theory come from?, and finally when I concluded on we not understanding some things, I actually mean that, not because we should not strive to know but because our biology is probably not built to understand it. Look at chimps, the difference in DNA between our species is just 2%, but look at the gap, one can only understand rudimentary logic and the other General relativity.
What makes you think our brain has enough matter to understand some concepts the same way a chimp can't grasp quantum mechanics? Imagine a species with a DNA difference of 2% ahead of us, do you think we can grasp concepts those guys would?

We presently dont have the means to test the multiverse hypothesis, so right now, it is pseudo-science, but it is an interesting idea and when we get to the weirdness of quantum states, the idea takes strong-hold in explaining reality.

In my opinion, the multiverse hypothesis still wont answer the question of the beginning of reality, if string theory is proven correct and we do really have a one dimensional string that is the building block of all that we know, then what is that string composed of and where did it come from?...did it start somewhere in the distant future, or has it always been?, these are questions that i would love to see answered but i am so certain that i wont and it saddens me.

In conclusion, i think there are some things about reality that we would never ever understand.

I love my country but i fear we are deluded, deluded by this thing called Religion and its constant doctrines of the End of Times. Every religion tends to have some sort of myth about how the world would end, the funny thing is that the most popular religions now tend to think it would happen sooner than we think, some believe before 2100, others say in the next 20 years, some even think we are in the last days. I can only laugh at all these assumptions but the main aim of writing this post is the effect this kind of thinking has on my fellow Nigerian.

Instead of the scientific enquiry, we say its God's work.
Instead of planning for the future of our children and Grand-children, we delude ourselves that rapture would come suddenly
Instead of building our hospitals, we take our sick to church for prayers
Instead of giving to the needy, we pay tithe to pastors with private jets
Instead of loving everyone even if they are different(be it racially or sexual orientation), we condemn,judge and threathen them
Instead of Innovation, we seek intervention from God

We keep on deluding ourselves with false hopes and imminent fear of the end of the world, forgetting to live and making life better for those around us and future generations yet to be born. Its a pity people dont see what religion has done to them, and how it has made them far less moral than the people they accuse of immorality.

NB: The Earth has been around for 4.5billion years, it would be around for another 2-3 billion years, although it has only about 1.5billion years for it to remain habitable before the Sun makes it too hot for life, by then, i hope if our species survive or rather our prodigies do, we would have long left the solar system(Thats what science helps you do, not Religion). So i say to you religious folks, Heal the world, Live and Let Live, and try your possible best to leave a good contribution to the human race for centuries because your End-time is a Fairy tale.
