Too early for the week. BAD news shall never befall us this week. AMEEEEEN |
Ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Benue on Monday, security has been beefed up, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. Armed security personnels were seen deployed to strategic areas in Makurdi while others were seen patrolling streets in armoured tanks and vehicles as part of measures to boost up security in the state. NAN also reports that patrol officers with sniffer dogs were also sighted along busy streets and highways in the state capital while a military helicopter was sighted conducting aerial surveillance. Similarly, siren-blaring police patrol vans conveying armed security personnel decked in bullet prove vestments were seen patrolling the streets. Buhari is expected in Benue to condole with the people of the state over the deaths of local farmers killed by suspected herdsmen on January 1 in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas. Scores of other villagers were also reported to have been killed at Okpokwu, Logo, and villages in Guma since the January 1 massacre. Part of the president’s itinerary as released by the Benue Government included a courtesy call on the fifth Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, at his Makurdi residence. According to the release, the president will have an interactive session with selected Benue indigenes and visit the IDP camp via helicopter. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Fatayi Owoseni, and the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, were yet to respond to phone calls put to them by NAN as they were said to be working to firm up the security arrangements. However, a cross-section of Makurdi residents commended security agencies for the tight security measures put in place. The resident hoped that the visit would tackle the mounting security and development challenges of the state. cC: lalasticlala http://punchng.com/security-beefed-up-in-makurdi-ahead-of-buharis-visit/ |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday re-arraigned a former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and two others in an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan over alleged N11.5bn fraud. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the other defendants are a former Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Senator Hosea Agboola; and an Ibadan-based businessman, Femi Babalola. The defendants are facing 11 counts bordering on conspiracy, awarding a contract without budgetary provision, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from an illegal act and concealing the ownership of such property, among others. EFCC’s counsel, Dr. B. Ubi, told the court that when Alao-Akala was the governor of Oyo State, he awarded a road contract worth N8.5bn between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services. Ubi alleged that the firm, owned by Babalola, handled the contract on behalf of the 33 local governments without budgetary provision. The counsel further claimed that Alao-Akala ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local governments in the state to the tune of N3.5bn. He also alleged that Alao-Akala conspired with Ayoola to withdraw N2.9bn from Oyo State Local Government Joint Account. The prosecutor told the court that Alao-Akala also illegally acquired some property on Old Bodija road, off Rotimi Williams road, when he was the governor of the state. He said the offences contravened Section 22 (4) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act and Section 1 (18) of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Mr. Hakeem Afolabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Alao-Akala and Babaloa prayed the court to exercise its discretion in granting bail to the defendants. Afolabi said the charge before the court was not a fresh one but a re-arraignment. He said the matter was first filed on October 11, 2011 before Justice Moshood Abas and bail was granted after the defendants met the conditions. NAN recalls that the defendants had also appeared before Justice Akintunde Boade and Justice Bayo Taiwo who was recently transferred out of Ibadan Division. Afolabi said Alao-Akala was granted bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like sum; while the other defendants were granted bail in the sum of N3m each with two sureties in like sum. Afolabi urged the court to allow the defendants to enjoy their earlier bail conditions. Mr. Richard Ogunwole, another Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Ayoola, aligned with the submission of Alao-Akala’s counsel. The EFCC’s counsel said he would not oppose the bail applications. Justice Muniru Owolabi granted the defendants’ prayers and adjourned the case till April 16 for trial. http://punchng.com/efcc-re-arraigns-alao-akala-two-others-over-alleged-n11-5bn-fraud/

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja to give an accelerated hearing to the trial of a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd). The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission prosecuting Dasuki and others before the FCT High Court on charges bordering on alleged diversion of multi-billion naira funds earmarked for purchase of arms meant to be used to fight the insurgency in the North-East. The five-man panel of the apex court headed by Justice Dattijo Muhammad noted in a judgment on two separate appeals by Dasuki on Friday, that the trial initiated in 2015, had been frustrated at the FCT High Court by various interlocutory applications and appeals. The five Justices on the apex court’s panel unanimously gave the order for accelerated hearing of the trial after dismissing Dasuki’s two appeals on Friday. The ex-NSA’s appeals had sought an order putting on hold his trial until he is released from “unlawful” detention by the Department of State Service. Dasuki had appealed to the Supreme Court against the judgments of the June 15, 2016 Court of Appeal, Abuja, which had affirmed the earlier separate rulings of the FCT High Court. Both the FCT High Court and the Court of Appeal had dismissed Dasuki’s prayers, ruling that his re-arrest by the operatives of the DSS after he met his bail conditions and was released from Kuje prison on December 29, 2015, did amount to the disobedience of the trial court’s order granting him bail. Justice Ejembi Eko, who prepared and read the lead judgment of the Supreme Court on Friday, affirmed the concurrent findings of the trial court and the Court of Appeal. The apex court, agreeing with EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), ruled that Dasuki’s appeals lacked in merit and were fraught with ulterior motive of frustrating his trial. http://punchng.com/supreme-court-orders-accelerated-hearing-of-dasukis-trial-dismisses-appeals/

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that the issuance of transferred temporary voter’s card to the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, last week has not affected the criminal case of double registration against him. This was made known on Thursday by the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, James Apam, during an interactive session with journalists in Lokoja He said the pending issue of double registration against the governor was still pending and had not taken away his right of transfer of his registration details. Recall that the commission had, last year, accused Bello of double registration, and said he would have been prosecuted but for his immunity. However, three INEC staff were indicted, as two officials were dismissed, while an Assistant Director was suspended. But in what looks like a shift of position on Monday, INEC confirmed that Governor Bello applied for the transfer of his permanent voter’s card from Abuja to Okene and his application has been approved, while his temporary voter’s card has been issued to him in Okene. Apam said Bello applied for the transfer of his registration details from Abuja to his Okene country home, noting that the application was found qualified for transfer after it was subjected to legal scrutiny. “The fact that he had been alleged to have registered twice does not take away his right of transfer of the existing registered voters card; when the time comes, INEC will do the needful,” he added.
