There are indications that OLX, an online marketplace owned by Naspers, has shut down its offices in Nigeria, a move that will affect over 100 of its employees. It was gathered that the workers were formally informed of the decision on Tuesday through a notice of termination, which will commence in March, and will be followed by the management team in April. In an emailed response by the Public Relations and Communications Lead, OLX Nigeria, Uche Nwagboso, the company confirmed that it made a decision to consolidate its business operations in Nigeria. According to her, the company has made provision for financial compensation for the workers that will be affected. “We made a difficult but important decision in Nigeria to consolidate our operations between some of our offices internationally. Our marketplace will continue to operate here – uninterrupted – as it has since 2010, and we remain committed to the many people here who use our platform to buy and sell every month,” Nwagboso said. She added, “We continue to be focused on constantly innovating to make sure that OLX remains the top classified platform in the country. Of course, we are committed to helping our affected colleagues during this transition and have already offered them meaningful financial and other support. “As we’ve expressed to them directly, we are extremely grateful for their many significant contributions to OLX’s success.” OLX, which launched in Nigeria in 2012, said it had more than three million sellers and buyers registered on its platform in 2015 and reported that items valued at N12.1tn were posted for sale on its website in 2016. OLX is a classified ad platform that connects people in local communities to buy, sell or exchange used goods and services through their mobile phone or on the web. OLX operates in 45 countries and has an average of 54 million monthly listings of items for sale on its website. The e-commerce business is experiencing divestment in Nigeria. Efritin.com closed down in 2015, citing high cost of doing business as reasons for the exit from Nigeria. Konga.com, in which Naspers is a major investor, also sold its business to Zinox Group last week. Cc: lalasticlala http://punchng.com/olx-closes-shop-in-nigeria/ |

Alexander Okere, Benin There was pandemonium at Third junction in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State as angry youths staged a protest over the alleged killing of a bus driver by a policeman. The protest on Tuesday later turned violent and resulted in a clash between youths and some mobile policemen deployed in the scene. As the policemen fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters, the demonstrators threw stones at the security personnel. Subsequent efforts by the security agents to calm the aggrieved youths proved abortive as they (protesters) destroyed some operational vehicles of the police. One of the Hilux vans was said to have been set ablaze. The development grounded commercial activities on Akpakpava road and Second junction, as traders close their shops and took cover. Leke Baiyewu, Abuja The crisis in the All Progressives Congress in Kano State involving Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, was extended to the Senate on Wednesday where members had a hot debate. President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, also directed the Senate Committee on Police Affairs to summon the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and ensure that he provides security for Kwankwaso to be able to visit his constituency. The issue was raised at the plenary when Senator Isah Misau (Bauchi-Central) raised a point of order on the spate of insecurity in Kano due to the political crisis in the state. The senator said he was concerned by the crisis due to the fact that 70 per cent of his constituency shares border with the state. Misau said, “I don’t want to talk about the issue of politics in Kano, but I want to talk about the issue of security, especially concerning what is happening in Kano. “If you look at the social media about two days ago, there is the issue of ‘thuggery’ like what we call ‘Endeba’ in those days in Kano. And it is going to be a very serious concern if we don’t do anything about the coming back of ‘Endeba.’ “This issue started from the time when one of our colleagues, Senator Musa Rabi’u Kwankwaso, was about to visit Kano. “He gave a date for the visit and to meet his people in his constituency, but instead of him to be allowed and given the necessary security, the police wrote a letter to him, advising him not to go. “I don’t want to dig into the reasons why he was not allowed to go, but as we are seated here, if somebody, a senator representing a particular constituency, will not be allowed to visit his constituency, I think we are not doing good for ourselves.” Misau alleged that people, including women, were being armed in Kano for political reasons. He further alleged that the Kano State Government and House of Assembly had failed to check the crisis. “And the only route to my constituency is through Kano,” he stated. But senators from Kano dismissed Misau’s claims, condemning him for raising political issues in the state on the floor of the Senate. The House of Representatives has opened a public hearing on the rift between the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun; and the suspended Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Munir Gwarzo. The hearing is being conducted by the House Committee on Capital Market and Institutions. It is chaired by a Peoples Democratic Party member from Kogi State, Mr. Tajudeen Yusuf. Both Adeosun and Gwarzo have made submissions to the committee. However, the two have refused to shift grounds on their positions. The minister insists that Gwarzo’s suspension is in order because he breached Public Rules by having interests in two private companies. But Gwarzo told the House panel that Adeosun was after him because of her desire to protect Oando Plc, a firm he was investigating before he was asked to go on suspension. http://punchng.com/updated-adeosun-gwarzo-meet-reps-refuse-to-shift-grounds/
