A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on Wednesday remanded in custody a 42-year-old man, Lateef Abu, accused of attempting to dupe a former minister of a property in the FCT Abu, a staff of the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS), is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and forgery. The Magistrate, Mr Anka Mustapha, refused the accused bail and ordered that he should be remanded at the Kuje prison while adjourning the case till Nov. 24. Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Emmanuel Adoku, told the court that one Kudirat Abubakar, also of AGIS, reported the matter at the FCT Police Command on Aug. 15. According to the prosecutor, the accused forged a Certificate of Occupancy of a plot of land belonging to a former Minister of the FCT, Alhaji Mohammed Abba Gana. He said that the accused subsequently attempted to sell the land. The prosecutor, however, added that the scam was uncovered during a legal search by the prospective buyer. He said that the accused had obtained the original document from the former minister on the pretext that there was a prospective buyer interested in the property. Adoku said that the accused, who could not give reasons for his action, pleaded for forgiveness and attributed his action to the economic hardship in the country. The prosecutor said that the offences committed contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code. When the charge was read to the accused in court, he pleaded guilty. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/07/agis-staff-docked-over-alleged-attempt-to-dupe-ex-minister/

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, yesterday accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of being responsible for the present parlous state of the nation’s economy. Okorocha made the allegation during the World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Heroes Square in Owerri, the Imo state capital, where he declared that the 16 years of PDP rule was the worst in the history of the country because it was looted dry. According to him, “The PDP destroyed the economy of the country through mindless looting of the nation’s resources after its 16 years in power, which will take the country over 10 years to recover. So, this is the problem which has affected every sector including the education.” The governor, however, noted that despite the bad economy, his administration had continued to pay special attention to the education sector in the state, stressing that education was the power of the state. “Education is our power and it is the pivot of the Rescue Mission and not even the bad economy can deter us from investing in the education of our children because that is the only real legacy we can give to them. “Today, because of the free education policy of this administration, the school enrolment has tripled in the last four years,” he stated. Okorocha maintained that his administration would continue to improve the welfare of the teachers in the state as well as the learning environment. http://dailypost.ng/2015/10/06/16-years-of-pdp-rule-worst-in-nigerias-history-okorocha/
