Well we find ourselves in a unique position and we must work with it or change it to our advantage. They may be ACN but they are also Nigerians. The zoning arrangements zone to a region, but not specifically to a party. That is a loophole ACN can exploit. There are ways around these things. The SW has a lot of burden on its shoulders (population), and we cannot afford to lose out or be irrelevant in the scheme of things.

ABUJA— NINE outgoing state
governors across the country who
have enjoyed immunity for the past
four or eight years may soon be
guests of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC, as their
tenures expire on May 29.
Sources at the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC, told
Vanguard, weekend, that the anti-
graft agency was going after nine
state governors it perceived as having
cases to answer over how they spent
the billions of naira allocated to their
states throughout their tenure.
Meantime, EFCC is said to have placed
the governors under a 24 hour
surveillance.
Vanguard gathered that the essence
of placing them on the watch list was
to forestall their jetting out of the
country immediately they handed over
to their successors on May 29.
The agency is, however, keeping mum
over the matter, a tactic observers say
was being adopted not to sensitise the
affected public officers.
When the spokesman, Femi Babafemi,
was asked about the situation he
simply said: “No comment, when we
get to the bridge we will cross it.”
Vanguard learnt that loads of petitions
against the nine governors were now
with the EFCC and that in a matter of
days the governors would be made to
account for their deeds as the
commission is said to have started
investigating them.
Nine outgoing govs
The nine outgoing governors, whose
names are being bandied, are Gbenga
Daniel of Ogun State, Adebayo Alao-
Akala of Oyo State; Bukola Saraki of
Kwara State and Ikedi Ohakim of Imo
State.
Others are Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano
State; Ibrahim Shinkafi of Zamfara
State; Muhammadu Goje of Gombe
State; Modu Sheriff of Borno State and
Akwe Doma of Nasarawa State.
On May 29, these governors will lose
their immunity as none of them will
return to office, having either
completed their two terms in office or
lost their re-election bid in last month ’s
governorship election.
When contacted over the matter, Ogun
State government through the Chief
Press Secretary, Adegbenro Adebanjo,
said the state government was not
perturbed at all.
He said: “It will not be the first time
EFCC will be investigating some of the
commissioners, but like what
happened the other time, nothing will
again be found this time around. ”
One of the petitions against Governor
Gbenga Daniel is believed to have
been written by former President
Olusegun Obasanjo.
Petitions against Akwe Doma
It was also gathered that one of the
petitions sent to EFCC against Akwe
Doma, the outgoing Nasarawa State
governor, was written by Alhaji
Ibrahim Shekarau Musa, Secretary of
the Congress for Progressive Change,
CPC, in Nasarawa State.
In the petition, Musa alleged that
Akwe Doma ’s son, Umar, was one of
the fronts the governor was using to
siphon money.
It was also alleged that the state’s
Ministry of Water Resources raised the
sum of N900 million through a
backdated memo for the purported
supply of chemicals.
The ministries of Housing and Health
were also allegedly ordered to raise
N200 million and N340 million
through a backdated memo for the
construction of the Banquet Hall of
Government House.
It was further alleged in the petition
that a backdated memo was used to
raise an additional N68 million to
cover the cost of accommodation for
pilgrims participating in this year ’s Hajj
operation.
EFCC has already moved to Nasarawa
State as well as the other eight states
whose governors are under probe.
Already, EFCC is prosecuting 14 former
state governors for alleged corrupt
enrichment while they were in office
between 1999 and 2007. The former
governors are Joshua Dariye of
Plateau State whose case is pending at
the Federal High Court in Abuja;
Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa
dragged to the Federal High Court,
Lafia; Abubakar Audu of Kogi State
with case at the Federal High Court in
Lokoja; Saminu Turaki, former
governor of Jigawa State who is being
tried at the Federal High Court, Abuja;
Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State facing trial
also in Abuja; Boni Haruna of
Adamawa with case at Federal High
Court, Abuja and Michael Botmang of
Plateau facing trial at the Federal High
Court in Abuja.
Other former governors on trial at
various Federal High Courts are Ayo
Fayose of Ekiti, James Ibori of Delta,
Lucky Igbinedion of Edo, Chimaroke
Nnamani of Enugu, Jolly Nyame of
Taraba, Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo and
Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State.
Ibori is also currently facing trial in the
United Kingdom after he was
extradited from Dubai to face money
laundering charges.

PRESIDENT of the Joint National
Association of Persons with Disability,
Prince Paul Adelabu, has unveiled
what the incoming governor of Oyo
State, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi,
has for the disabled persons in the
state.
Prince Adelabu, who is the leader of
Ajimobi Disability Support Group, said
the Governor-elect has evolved
welfarist programmes that will wipe
out poverty from the lives of the
disabled persons in Oyo State.
Adelabu who was the former principal
of Rehabilitation Centre for the
Disabled, Moniya, Ibadan said the
incoming administration will execute
certain programmes that will
discourage disabled persons from
begging for alms on the streets.
Speaking with Sunday Tribune in
Ibadan on Tuesday, he said Ajimobi
administration will appoint a disabled
person as a commissioner and that
each local government chairman will
create a department for disabled
persons, and a disabled person of
special adviser status will head the
department.
According to Adelabu who claimed
that his group had concluded
agreement with Ajimobi before the
election, the welfarist programme shall
include monthly allocation to the
Disabled Persons Departments at the
state and local government levels,
creation of camps where disabled
persons are to be settled and learning
of trade and acquisition of skills,
provision of fund for disabled persons
to set up business and special welfare
package for those who cannot do
anything.
Adelabu also stated that bursary
allowance and scholarship will be
made available to brilliant disabled
persons, while each ministry shall
grant employment to them.
He said within the first hundred days
of Ajimobi’s administration, beggars
would be flushed out from the streets
of Ibadan and its environment and
laws prohibiting giving of alms to the
beggars on the street will be
promulgated.

Twenty four members-elect of the
House of Representatives from Lagos
on the platform of Action Congress of
Nigeria (ACN) Monday described as
false and unrealistic the report that the
Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)
lawmakers in the lower legislative
chamber are to defect to the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) as a condition
to get the position of Deputy
Speakership.
The lawmakers debunked the report
published in a national daily published
on Monday after collecting their
Certificates of Return at the state office
of Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) in Yaba,
categorically stating that they were not
under any pressure to defect to the
ruling party.
Prominent among the lawmakers that
punctured the alleged defection
include Minority Leader of the House of
Representatives, Hon. Hakeem
Gbajabiamila, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat
(Mushin II), Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai
and Hon. Ekundayo Bush-Alebiosu
among other legislators who spoke
with THISDAY.
While listing the struggle for Lagos
special status as the uniting agenda of
all federal lawmakers in the state, Hon.
Hamzat simply ruled out the likelihood
of the ACN lawmakers to defect to the
ruling PDP, stating that the idea was
unprogressive to the philosophies of
the country’s main opposition party.
According to him, the report cannot be
true. I have not been consulted about
it. I have not been contacted. The idea
is at variance with the tenets and
ground norms of the Action Congress
of Nigeria. We cannot entertain it. By
the grace of God, all my colleagues in
the opposition on wing will not defect
to the PDP.
Also speaking, Gbajabiamila, who is
the minority leader, said there was no
such thing in the pipeline, thus
wondering where the report
published by a national daily (not
THISDAY) on Monday emanated from
while he expressed strong will of the
ACN lawmakers to play the roles of the
opposition party.
He added that if there “is a move like
that being initiated by the ruling party,
it is already a wasted effort. The ACN
lawmakers are not
under pressure to dump the party. It is
unrealistic and false because
our programmes and philosophies are
different absolutely from that of
the ruling party”.
Akinderu-Fatai, who is the voice of
Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency I in
the lower chamber of the National
Assembly, quickly said the report was
speculative. He said the ACN
lawmakers are positioning themselves
to make meaning input into the
legislative process.
Akinderu-Fatai added that the new
Electoral Act as amended did not give
room haphazard defection as
contained in the report; thereby it was
a total violation of the electoral law if
the ACN lawmakers “defect. Such a
move is not just speculative; it is
equally illegal.
ACN lawmakers cannot be parties to
it”.
Bush-Alebiosu on his part raised
rhetoric questions on the report that
the ACN lawmakers are under
pressure to defect the ruling party,
asking why “we should defect. On
what basis should the voice of the
downtrodden venture into thing? The
report is not true. It is not real. We hold
forth as the opposition lawmakers ”.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)
has said it is not interested in the so-
called Government of National Unity
(GNU) being planned by the PDP-led
federal government, saying it is
satisfied with its role as the leader of
opposition and a government-in-
waiting.
In a statement issued in Abuja on
Wednesday by its National Publicity
Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the
party said this clarification should
dispel the rumours that the ACN has
been contacted and that it is in
negotiations for a share of ministerial
appointments.
''Our stand against the so-called
Government of National Unity is that it
stifles democracy by compromising
virile opposition which is a key
ingredient of a vibrant democracy,
thereby encouraging the emergence
of a one-party state. It also stunts
development and promotes
complacency. We hope this
clarification will silence those who
have been peddling the lies that our
party sold out to the PDP during the
presidential election,'' it said.
The party warned that any member of
the ACN who is interested in the GNU
should first quit the party, and also
reminded state chairmen of the party
to guard their utterances and clear
with the national executive committee
before commenting on issues such as
the GNU.
''No member, at any level of the party,
should trade with our name. State
Chairmen should comment only on
issues within their areas of authority
and stop committing the party on
issues that are only within the purview
of the National Executive committee of
the Party.
''We know that this is the ripe season
for 'food is ready' politicians, who are
ready to sell their birth right, if
necessary, to join any government in
power. But as we have always said,
we are not willing to compromise our
ideals just because we want to share
in the spoils of office.
''If we did not compromise when we
have just one state, why should we do
so now that we have grown to six
states, with the possibility of growing
further when we challenge in court
those who stole our mandates?
Therefore, any member who wishes to
work with a PDP government should
get out of our party today,'' it said.
ACN said the era of the party's
executives paying 'courtesy' visits to
governments of the ruling party in
their states is long gone, and that
member, no matter how highly placed,
who tries to trade with the name of the
ACN would be sanctioned accordingly.

GOVERNOR Isa Yuguda of
Bauchi state disclosed, Sunday, that
over 600 suspects have so far been
arrested and being prosecuted in
connection with the murder of nine
members of the National Youth Service
Corps, NYSC during the post election
violence in the State.
Speaking with Journalists in Abuja,
Sunday, Yuguda who noted that he
stands accountable to his God for the
killings, as the governor of the State
when he dies, vowed that the suspects
who he described as beasts and
animals will be made to face the full
wrath of the law for taking the lives of
a human being, adding that if the law
permits, he will personally take up a
gun, shoot them when finally found to
be guilty of the offence.
‘’Definitely, the law must take its own
course, we have already arrested over
600 people, some of them actually did
the thing, we are going to prosecute
them and if the law will allow me, after
they have been found guilty, if the law
will allow, I will take the gun and
shoot them myself.
‘’What is the correlation between that
headline that I spat on top of the

have toiled for twenty years with their
parents paying their school fees, they
have come to serve me, very happily
serving me, anytime I go to them, they
mill around me, and I have offered to

boxes, who were trying to use
machete to machete people and these
youths are serving the nation.

I think this clement guy is getting it wrong. . . ACN as a party has the right to opt out of GNU. They did not in anyway say yorubas of any other party shouldnt take part in gej's govt. they speak for themselves, abi dat one na crime?
