SportsGhana World Cup Cash To Be Used For Hotel Construction by Dotman01(op): 6:13pm On Jun 15, 2011
Ghana are considering investing the
US$11m earned from the 2010
World Cup in the construction of a
three-star hotel as a camping base
for the country ’s national teams.
The financial reward of Ghana’s
participation in the tournament will be
channeled towards the hotel at the
Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence
at Prampram in the Dangbe West
District of Greater Accra Region.
The hotel with an Olympic-size
swimming pool amongst other
facilities will serve as a major camping
base for the various national teams
and also operate as an income
generating venture.
Ghana reaped 11 million US Dollars
after taxes for reaching the last eight
of the first ever Mundial on African soil,
South Africa and Ms Akua Sena
Dansua, Minister of Youth and Sports
said at an interaction with the media
on Tuesday that the hotel facility was
amongst the consideration of a legacy
project for the country.
Ms Dansua said there were many
proposals with the Ghana Football
Association (GFA) in respect to the
legacy project and the three-Star hotel
project received an almost positive
response.
“The parties have not finalized
discussions, and the project can only
take off after all parties have
consented to it.
But for the recent problems between
the GFA and the Economic and
Organised Crime Office (EOCO),
discussions would have been
advanced according to the Minister.
Ms Dansua confirmed that the cash
was still in Government coffers and will
be channeled through for the
approved project at the right time.
The project, she said, will be
synonymous with Ghana ’s heroics at
the Mundial which saw the Black Stars
become the first African team after
Cameroon and Senegal to reach the
quarters of the World Cup.

PoliticsImo: Police Raid NTA Premises To Squash Protest by Dotman01(op): 9:34am On Jun 11, 2011
A detachment of policemen from Imo State Police Command yesterday, stormed the premises of Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, fired teargas canisters and ransacked the entire offices.

Saturday Vanguard investigations revealed that the policemen were in NTA premises to stop scores of elected local council operators, who were recently sacked by Governor Rochas Okorocha, from making their grievances known through the television channel.

It was also gathered that the rampaging policemen disrupted operations in the station for more than 40 minutes and arrested over 200 of the protesters and took them to an unknown destination.

As at the time of going to press, the families and friends of the arrested protesters were yet to establish link with their loved ones and none was charged to court for any misdemeanor.

Reacting to the ugly incident, the General Manager of NTA Owerri, Lady Tessy Ihuoma Alfred, condemned the police action and likened it to “sheer
brutality and unnecessary invasion of NTA premises.

“I do not like the police action. I condemn it in its entirety. The demonstration by the elected local government councilors was very peaceful. I expected the policemen or their leader to at least come and see the General Manager, GM, but they felt they are above the law”, Lady Alfred fumed.

PoliticsAkala Withdrew N3b Five Days To His Exit, Ajimobi Alleges by Dotman01(op): 9:37am On Jun 09, 2011
Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi
yesterday said former Governor
Adebayo Alao-Akala withdrew
N3billion five days before the
expiration of his administration ’s
tenure.
He expressed concerned over what
he described as hasty withdrawal of
the money from the lean government
coffers.
The governor spoke at the
Governor ’s Office at a meeting with
the state Council of Obas and Chiefs,
led by its Chairman, the Alaafin of Oyo,
Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi.
He said the hurried withdrawal of the
money was part of the “desperate
moves” by the Alao-Akala
administration “to empty the
treasury” before leaving office on May
29.
He added that the former governor
also hurriedly “approved the N18,00
minimum wage for civil servants” to
create more problem for the new
administration.
Ajimobi noted that with the prevailing
circumstance, there was urgent need
for monarchs and leaders of thought
to intervene in the looming dispute
with labour unions over the
implementation new minimum wage.
The governor said though his
administration wanted to pay the new
minimum wage, there was no way it
could afford it because the wage bill
alone exceeded the state ’s monthly
revenue.
Ajimobi had told labour leaders at a
meeting in Ibadan yesterday that the
statutory allocation accruable to the
state was, on the average, N2.4 billion
monthly, while its Internally
Generated Revenue (IGR) nets was
about N1 billion.
He said if these were added to VAT
and other revenues accruable to the
government, the state ’s monthly
income was about N4.2 billion on the
average.
Ajimobi said it was glaring that with
the implementation of N18,00
minimum wage, “even after
borrowing N200 million monthly to
pay the workers ’ salaries, the state
government would not only find it
impossible to provide the needed
implements for the civil servants to do
their work, like common office pen
and typing sheets ”, it would be an
impossibility to actualise the lofty
dreams he swore to provide for the
people of the state.
The governor said if the state was to
implement the new N18,000
minimum wage, it would pay N4.4
billion monthly salaries, adding that
this would mean the government
would have to borrow N200 million
monthly to pay its workers.
Ajimobi said his administration was
ready to “bring their salaries at par
with comparable states, beginning
with Ekiti State ”.
He said: “If the Ekiti State salary model
is adopted, the new salary will
increase workers ’ wages by between
45 and 100 per cent; push up the
wage bill by N800million per month;
and push the wage bill to
N3.7billion. ”
He said the meeting was to inform the
traditional rulers, religious leaders
and leaders of thought that his
administration would continue to
dialogue with labour leaders to
ensure that the government was able
to provide what he promised the
residents.
But Alao-Akala’s spokesman, Prince
Dotun Oyelade, denied the allegation,
saying the past administration did not
withdraw N3billion as alleged.
In a statement, Oyelade said: “What
happened was that money was paid
to contractors upon the presentation
of certificates for the job done and
certified by the Monitoring Unit,
Ministry of Works, and the Due
Process Unit. This is the conventional
way of paying for projects executed.”
He said the onus was on the Ajimobi
administration to prove that the
money was wrongly applied or
prematurely released.
He urged traditional rulers and
leaders of thought to intervene in the
dispute with labour over the new
minimum wage.
Ajimobi offered to adopt the Ekiti State
salary model pending the resolution
of the grey areas on the
implementation of the new minimum
wage.

PoliticsNigeria’s New N7bn Presidential Jet Banned Worldwide by Dotman01(op): 3:44pm On May 28, 2011
Almost 70 days after the new N7.65bn presidential jet, Falcon 7X, touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from the
manufacturer ’s factory in France, Dassault Aviation, France European authorities have banned the jet from flying in Europe and other parts of the world over safety issues.

The ban, an Emergency Airworthiness Directive, which was issued on Thursday by the European Aviation Safety Agency, the agency that regulates Dassault as well as the European aviation industry, took immediate effect, starting from May 27.

The EASA’s grounding of the worldwide fleet of Dassault’s Falcon 7X executive jets came hours after one of the aircraft encountered an in-flight anomaly that could have caused the pilots to lose control.

The EASA directive, which was published on Thursday, said that the jet “experienced an uncontrolled pitch trim runaway during descent.

The crew succeeded in recovering a stable situation and performed an uneventful landing. ”

An analysis of the plane’s Digital Flight Data Recorder and Fault History Database confirmed the event, EASA said, but the cause of the pitch trim runaway couldn ’t be explained.

“This condition, if it occurs again, could lead to the loss of control of the aeroplane, ” the EASA notice said.

However, the Cologne, Germany-based safety agency said in its Emergency Airworthiness Directive that the decision to halt all flight operations of Dassault ’s flagship jet came at the request of the Paris-based company, according to a Dow Jones report on Friday.

The plane was en route between Europe and Malaysia, Asia, with no passengers on board, Dassault spokesman Stephane Fort told Dow
Jones Newswires by telephone.

The pilots managed to regain control of the aircraft and landed it safely in Malaysia, he said. Fort couldn’t say who owns the aircraft or who was operating it.

Fort said the decision to ground the aircraft was a precautionary measure.

Dassault has sent a team of technicians to Malaysia to try to identify the cause of the problem, he said, adding, “Our priority is the safety of our passengers and our aircraft.

The Falcon 7X was introduced in 2007 and is designed to fly 5,950 nautical miles with at least eight passengers. There are 112 of the aircraft in service.

“This airworthiness directive is considered to be an interim measure pending the outcome of the investigation currently carried out by the manufacturer, ” EASA said.

The Falcon 7X has a sticker price of about $50m, depending on cabin features.

President Goodluck Jonathan had in the third week of March 2011, taken delivery of a Falcon 7X plane, shortly after it landed on the shores of the country from France.

The aircraft, which was manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France, cost the government $51m (about N7.65bn.)

The Federal Executive Council had on August 12, 2010 approved $102m for the purchase of two Falcon 7X and $53.3m for one Gulfstream G550
aircraft to beef up the presidential fleet.

The second Falcon 7X, it was learnt then, was expected to arrive in the country during the second quarter of this year.

In what is probably its first mission, the jet was said to have conveyed the wife of the President, Patience, to Sokoto during the third of week of March.

The two Falcon 7X aircraft are to be supplied by Messrs Dassault Aviation of France, while the Gulfstream G550 will come from Messrs Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation of the United States.

PoliticsRe: Bloodbath In Lagos: Soldiers Kill Police Dpo, Dco 8 Others by Dotman01(m): 8:42am On May 26, 2011
In a civilised society, the police force
and army have no business with
one another. Generally, the police
force is saddled with protection of
lives and properties within the
country by maintaining law and
order. The army is saddled with
protecting the country against
external aggression (extra-
territorial forces) from other
countries, and sometimes within the
country (as in the case of militancy).
In essence, a soldier is trained in
offensive and defensive killing and
the police is trained mainly in
defensive killing and protection of
lives.
In Nigeria, there is no clear
definition of duties between these
two forces. The soldiers, because of
their expertise in weaponry, are
being deployed to maintain law and
order because the police force has
failed to some extent in this regard.
This perhaps, explain why we see
soldiers around. In my interactions
with army officers, I have
discovered that a typical soldier
dislikes a police officer because they
see an average policeman as
undisciplined, careless, uncouth,
irresponsible, provocative and
unintelligent (which is 70% true by
my observation).
Whether we like it or not, soldiers
are far more disciplined than the
policemen. For example, the soldiers
during the "boko-haram" crisis
handed over the sect leader to the
policemen alive, but the police force
killed him within hours in custody.
There are many more cases of
extra-judicial cases of police
shootings, infact over thousands of
them. The soldiers, however brute,
only obey superior orders before
they kill. A policeman has his gun as
his superior, whenever, he has a
gun, he becomes a demi-god.
While I do not support the offensive,
warlike tactics of the soldiers in
Badagry, I believe the police force
provoked the soldiers and got
unexpected results.
Finally, it should be known that the
police force have majorly
abandoned their primary
assignment of protecting citizens
and have instead killed scores of
innocent civilians over mundane
issues like #20 tip. I suggest that the
whole police force be disbanded
and a new police force with
improved mandate be established.
The Federal Government can go to
countries like Benin republic, South
Africa and Egypt to learn how to
build a public-friendly police force. I
rest my case
