Politics › Re: Meet Tom Tugendhat Who Accused Gowon Of Looting Half Of Central Bank Of Nigeria by eagleu: 7:19pm On Nov 27, 2020 |
Why so much hair splitting by biased and paid internet trolls about corruption during Gowon era is a surprise, but being Nigeria, always expected the impossible.
Gowon had the opportunity to lead Nigeria, lay a lasting foundation, and carry the nation forward, but he didn't. The guy knew his administrative limitations as a young military officer, he brought in Awolowo, promised to hand over after a few years, but what did he do? He reneged.
Shame on anybody who's arguing that because he went to UK from Ethiopia, he didn't carry Nigeria's wealth with him. Even by appointing, and allowing corrupt people around him, Gowon was guilty. Whether he carried a plane load of naira notes, or he transferred it gradually over the years, the effect is the same. It shouldn't even be a point of dispute, but here it is.
A young officer who went around telling people that Nigeria's problem was not money, but how to spend it should have looked back and apologized for some of his grandiose statements, but no, he has uninformed trolls spewing thrash on his behalf.
Whether Gowon is defended by a million paid trolls or not, the result remains the same today: Nigeria did not lay a good foundation for its future - thanks to Gowon, Jack. |

BreconHills: Please think. Think.
Exchange rate at the time was £1 to 80k and the naira was 100% convertible at better rates than most European countries. How is this man not ranked as more wealthy than Bill Gates, Bezos and Musk? Nigerias reserves in the 70's were humongous and the currency was partially backed by Gold.
It sounds exciting to imagine a man flying plane loads of loot abroad but just think.
The UK has extensive property registers going all the way back to forever. Why is this man not able to locate just one. It only takes a few seconds on a mobile device.
I have to believe that this man is either a public school tw*t ( He did attend St Pauls) or was grossly misinformed and uber trusting of his Nigerian informant ( it happens - racist exceptionalism)
Whatever may be the case, the idea of one man hauling off half of the CBN at those favourable exchange rates and then going on to live like a monk is a drunks comic book. Wow! You're shooting at a mirage with both hands, not knowing the target is right behind you. Ever heard of figure of speech? Why do you think that the only way Gowon could have moved assets to UK was by filling boxes and bags with cash in his own name? At basic intelligence level, which this guy has access to, it's easy to see what assets belongs to who and who, whether it was declared or not. Attacking the guy for attending St. Paul is the usual Nigerian method of confusing and attacking messengers and not the message. You're in UK, you can do better than this. |

jeffoe: While some brit are corrupt. It is a deep shame to be caught in the act of corruption or be alleged to be corrupt. People resign and their political career destroyed. Corrupt people don't get presidential pardon in the UK. Unlike Nigeria where corrupt people are celebrated given honorary titles etc.
They have systems although not perfect that makes corrupt practices difficult coupled with very strong institutions.
Can the Nigerian government make bold to say that their are corrupt assets of UK politicians in Nigeria. UK corruption does not impoverish it citizens unlike it Nigerian counterparts.
As regards the accessory to theft part. I am a layman but I know that there are processes that is why UK is not a dictatorship they can't just go about seizing people asset.
It takes the cooperation of two sovereign Nations to tackle cross-border money laundry. Nigeria government would never corporate when it involves member of it government. The only reason Abacha loot was recovered was because of the corporation of obj government and that is because Abacha was dead and obj was only avenging his imprisonment. Thank you Gowon-apologizers will bend over backward, without reason, and filled with bias to justify his action. Many countries will simply do a case analysis, and see where mistakes were made, and where successes was achieved, no not in Nigeria! Next, some people will make excess for Gowon, because he was young, inexperienced, and finishing a war. They failed to read history of other nations. |

Babanah: Gowan was overthrown why attending the OAU summit in Kampala Uganda and not Ethiopia.
In those days member states took turns to host OAU summits.
Gowan later left for the UK to study political science at the university of Warwick. From Bsc to phd.
He was pictured queuing for food at the university cafeteria. Which drew the aire of the new government in Nigeria at that time.
So much for someone who looted the CBN. So, because he was overthrown while on a conference in Kenya? Did it mean he had no money in the UK already? Oh, he didn't have time to collect his Ghana must go full of naira in Lagos? What a shallow and childish understand. Corruption was one of the reasons Murtala Mohammed overthrew him. |

Praxis758: Don't lay claim to what you don't have evidence of.
I've never heard of a single financial graft allegation against General Gowon after 45 years out of power.
I'm not saying he's a saint o, but we can't compare his integrity to those of Obj, IBB, Abacha and Abdulsalam. A British intelligence officer with access to information is saying what he knows, he is neutral. not Biafran, not Yoruba, not Hausa, and has nothing to gain by lying on this issue, and you still ignorantly sit there and say, 'wait, I am not quite convinced ' |

RenaissanceGuy: Let's not be emotional about this. Yakubu Gowon was in Ethiopia attending a meeting when he was overthrown. So how did he then move half of CBN? Did he come back to Nigeria to tell the new military govt to give him half of the CBN treasury? Impossible. Bring up your own "superior" logic. The guy said the man LEFT NIGERIA with half of CBN money. Actually, Gowon went to the UK FROM ETHIOPIA after he learned of his ouster. So it doesn't add up.
MODIFIED: For all of you quoting me misunderstanding my logic, it's the lawmaker who didn't use the right words. He said Yakubu 'left Nigeria with half of CBN' meaning the looting was after he was overthrown and was done at once. He should have said "Yakubu stole half of the CBN while he was the head of state". Poorly educated Nigerians fighting with semantics, confusing themselves, and hoping to confuse others too. |
