Your naysaying is getting out of hand. Even nairaland has a log in ID and anybody here can be traced with the ID and his/her IP adress. What makes you think that they will be sending money in and out without identification numbers?. Is that too hard for us again?. Geez. |

How a new Yoruba leader will emerge, by Sijuwade By Bayo Ohu The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, yesterday in Lagos gave a hint on how the new leader of the Yorubas will emerge. The royal father, in a speech read on his behalf at the presentation of the Commemorative Publication titled " Awo: On the trail of a titan" as part of activities to mark the Centenary celebration of the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo said the Yoruba traditional rulers across West Africa sub-region have agreed to collaborate and come up with strategies on how the new leader will be appointed to lead the Yoruba race into the promised land. advertisement Specifically, Sijuwade stated that the 250 traditional rulers of Yoruba stock who attended the festival of Yoruba Arts in Ile-Ife have agreed to appoint forty eminent Yoruba leaders who will be chosen from various segments of the Yoruba society examine and recommend who will be the next leader of the Yorubas. Addressing the audience, including the aged wife of late Awolowo, Chief (Mrs) HID Dideolu Awolowo and Chief Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, the Afenifere, Oba Sijuwade noted that in the record of the Yoruba race, Papa Obafemi Awolowo was the second leader that lived after the legendary "Oduduwa", stressing that, " Up till today, Papa's record has not been beaten and we are all praying to God Almighty to provide for us another leader that will be like the late Papa Obafemi Awolowo". He pointed out that, "If Papa Awolowo had not taken that decision to form that political party that governed Western Nigeria at that time, we would probably have lost our identity as a race by now". The Ooni spoke extensively on the political history o0f the Yorubas with particular reference to the raging leadership tussle between some prominent Yoruba Obas, especially in Oyo State where the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, Ajagungbade 111 who have locked horns over some issues of Obaship supremacy. Recalling the bickering between him and the Alaafin over the headship of the Council of Obas in the old Oyo State, the Ooni said contrary to beliefs in many quarters, the creation of Osun State from old Oyo State by the Babangida military administration in 1991 has nothing to do with Alaafin's attempt to make the chairmanship seat of the then council of Obas rotational between him and the Alaafin. Going deeper into the 19th century history of the Yorubas, the Royal father said the Oyo Empire which Alaafin is still hanging on to is no longer in existence because it collapsed and disintegrated in September 1793 under the Alaafin Aole and that the Alaafin also lost his beaded crown with fringe benefits during the episode and the crown was never re-consecrated by Ile-Ife up till today. "For Alaafin to be claiming to be number one Oba in Yorubaland is a taboo which his fore bearers never attempted to do because they knew it would be an abomination", he stated. On the current raging crisis that is rocking the Oyo State council of Obas, the Ooni said he had been approached by millions of Yoruba people in Nigeria and abroad on the need to intervene, stressing that; his stand at this moment is to make sure that there is peace. The Royal father added: "But honestly speaking, the Olubadan crown has nothing to do with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi as the controversy has finally settled and laid to rest in 1976 at a meeting between the then governor of old Oyo State, Maj. Gen. David Jemibewon and the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Sir Adesoji Aderemi who was the chairman of Council of Obas at that time and himself, then as Prince Okunade Sijuwade in attendance. He said: "I was actually approached by my friends from Ibadan, including Late Chiefs Lekan Salami, Adisa Akinloye, S.O Lanlehin, S.L Durosaro and late Oba Adeyemo to return home from London to support the then governor at the special meeting which was very short and precise because of Ibadan's historical background and affiliation to Ile-Ife. As the first founder of Ibadan, Crown Prince Adio Lagelu was a direct son of Ooni Luwo Gbagada who had a beaded crown with fringe benefits sent to settle in Ibadan in 1401 AD". According to him, Ibadan has always been the political headquarters of the Yoruba people where the late Papa Obafemi Awolowo served as the first Premier of the defunct Western Region followed by the late Chief S.L Akintola and it was also from Ibadan the first African governor in person of the late Ooni, Oba Adesoji Aderemi emerged followed by late Chief O. Fadahunsi. The matter of the Soun of Ogbomosho, he added also came up at the special meeting with the governor and it was settled. "But what people may not know is that the mother of the first Alaafin was Ibariba Aishatu and the first Alaafin Ajaka served in Katunga where the Ibaribas originated from and the first wife of Alaafin Ajaka was the senior sister to the progenitor of Soun's dynasty and their crown has been settled with Ajaka's dynasty long before 1600AD through his wife. This, according to him was why it was easy for Oba Soun Luwusi in 1832 to instruct his Baale Oja in Ogbomosho territory to settle Prince Atiba and the remnants of the Oyo people when they were exterminated from their home base to where is now known as Oyo Alaafin (Ago-Doyo) through his subject Baale Oja, the father of Ashipa in 1832. The history of northern Yoruba, the Ooni noted cannot be complete without the "Ibaribas" and "Nupes" and as a matter of fact, there are some other traditional rulers wearing beaded crowns with fringe benefits who must be able to stand tall at all times. These are the Aresa, Olugbon, Onipetu, Olukoyi and a few others in the part of northern Yoruba area who should be able to settle their differences whenever the need arises even though they have been handicapped because they have been ravaged by the Fulani Jihad war when they nearly lost everything they had. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jan/30/1.html |

PHCN staff banned from owning standby generators By Obinna Ezeobi, Abuja Staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria also bear the brunt of the current epileptic supply of electricity in the country, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bello Suleiman claimed in Abuja on Wednesday. Speaking in a parley with journalsists, Suleiman explained that PHCN workers were barred from owning power generators, so that they could gauge the quality of their service. According to PHCN, current generation levels oscillate between 3,200MW and 2,700MW owing to restrictions in the supply of gas needed for thermal stations. He said, "A journalist once asked me. Do you people in PHCN ever feel sorry for the way you treat other people. I answered that my own child tells me when there no power. "So everyone feels it. This is the only service that affects every single Nigerian no matter who or where you are. "As matter of policy, PHCN staff do not own stand by generators in their houses. Whether you are a managing director or the chief executive officer of one of the companies, officially we cannot put stand by generators in our houses because we should be the first people to feel the effect of our work. According to Suleiman, the Federal Government through the transitional board of PHCN had initiated a plan, which was certain to improve the nation's electricity situation. "This was the first thing we were able to explain to the new administration was that there is no way the nation will continue to talk about electricity without a plan. We also have to make ourselves realise that a nation has many priorities, but among them, there are some that are real priorities because once you do not provide them, the other priorities cannot be realised. Power is the blood of any nation. If any part of your body does not have blood, then it is dead." On the introduction of pre-paid meters, the CEO regretted that Nigeria was just introducing the technology when whereas it was being phased out across the world, with smart meters being the order of the day. He stated that smart meters had many capabilities, including the ability to send signals to the utility company when it was being tampered with and can be programmed such that customers who run out of credit at night or during weekends will not be cut off. Denying that PHCN planned to stop pre-payment meters, Suleiman added that smart meters will also be introduced as it had the capability of indicating whether a customer should be on a single or three phase meter based on consumption and bill him accordingly. The smart meter can also cut off any customer who is trying to connect to an overloaded transformer, he added. On why PHCN was at loggerheads with the Rivers State Government over payments for the power generated by its independent power company, Suleiman stressed that it bordered on the sharing formula of revenue generated. He explained that the Rivers State Government was demanding for 70 per cent of the proceeds and this was unreasonable. The CEO insisted that the Multi Year Order Plan allocated only N3.20k out of the N11 provided as tariff per kilowatt hour to generation, but PHCN was even willing to share the proceeds at a 50/50 per cent. He added that generating electricity using Low Pour Fuel Oil was not commercially viable if the power generated will be sold to the public. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jan/30/410.html |

Pregnant woman stabs husband in stomach By Yemi Dalemo, Ijebu Ode A 26-year-old pregnant    woman, Tosin Sodiq, on Wednesday night stabbed her husband in the stomach for his alleged refusal to settle a dispute between two of their neighbours, one of which had a disagreement with her. The incident occurred at 23, Ososha Street, off Olisa Street in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. Our correspondent learnt on Thursday morning that the woman left her husband when she saw his intestines coming out amidst a pool of blood. An elderly man who was the only man at home during the scuffle, also sustained a deep cut in his hand while attempting to collect the knife from the woman. When the woman saw the extent of damage she had caused to her husband, Tajudeen, she reportedly fled from the house. Sympathisers who later came to the scene rushed the man to Olu-Ola Hospital in Ijebu Ode. When it was discovered at the hospital that there was no money to take care of the immediate treatment of Tajudeen, the sympathisers took to the streets, soliciting financial assistance from passers-by. Dr. Seun Osiyale, who later attended to the victim, confirmed that an altercation between the victim and his wife while trying to reach an agreement resulted in the crisis. He said the several entry points of the knife on the man's stomach forced his intestines out. The 28-year-old victim was in agony when our correspondent visited him at the hospital for comments. The Police Area Commander in Ijebu Ode, Mr. Oyedokun Omolodun, confirmed the incident but said the police could not arrest the culprit as the case was reported at Igbeba Police Station several hours after the crime was committed Omolodun said the woman had since disappeared having realised the gravity of her offence. The Area Commander, however, urged residents to furnish the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator of the crime. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jan/30/400.html |

Founder of the African Refugee Foundation (AFR), Ambassador Olusegun Olusola, confers award on 41 virgins CHINYERE AMAECHI-MUSA FOUNDER of the African Refugee Foundation (AFR), Ambassador Olusegun Olusola last weekend conferred the agents of peace of ARF on 41 winners of female virginity contest. He said that the award was his own way of celebrating the 41 virgins, who participated in second Nigerian virgin girls celebration organised last year by Princess Adediran Adunni in Lagos. Amb. Olusola said the awardees whose ages ranged from 15 and above, have demonstrated that they can be trusted in resolving conflicts as volunteers of the ARF. While encouraging the girls to remain chaste as long as necessary, the ARF boss advised young people especially girls to live a pious life that would be useful to them and their community. Meanwhile, the 41 virgins would also enjoy free gyneacological care if they remained chastise. Dr. Ade Ekemode, who certified that the girls’ hymens were still intact as a proof of virginity made the medical offer in Lagos. Out of the 41, Miss Titilayo Amina Odekeye emerged the first virgin queen in the Miss Nigerian Virgin Girl Pageant. She went home with lots of gifts. However, Princess Adunni regretted that inspite of the lofty concept of the pageant, most homes and organisations she approached for collaboration shunned the programme. Reacting to her frustration, Ambassador Olusola said that the project was a worthy one and called for support for it. He enjoined parents to teach their daughters the virtue of remaining virgins before marriage, noting that most men want virgins as wives. In his words: "It is healthy to be a virgin and men like their wives to be virgins before marriage hence we need to support the organiser in this rebirth of our homes and society." http://odili.net/news/source/2009/jan/30/805.html |

I hope these systems would be resilient though and I hope there'll be back up.Paper trail or electronic trail, I am beginning to realize after Seun's comment that it will make no difference to corrupt officials. Sorry to disappoint you but keep the faith tho. It's refreshing. |
