Technology Market / Re: Super Laptop Powerbank For Extended Runtime by EbenG(m): 8:03pm On Mar 29, 2023 |
Hi everyone, I want to share my honest review of the power bank I purchased from WIREMIND last December (2022). I wanted to use it for a little while before writing a review, and I think now is the right time. I believe my experience can be helpful for both the seller and others who are contemplating whether to buy it or not. The particular power bank I bought was a 100kmah capacity, which cost about 90k naira at the time. I think the price has gone up a little since then. I promise to be as honest as possible, and all I'm sharing here is based on my own experience with the seller and the product. Firstly, I want to say that the seller is NOT A SCAMMER. I have never been scammed or ripped off in any way during my business transaction with him. Therefore, I can confidently say that he is a 100% legitimate power bank seller. I must commend the seller for being very approachable and knowing how to do business with customers. The first time I contacted him via WhatsApp to proceed with the purchase was after reading several reviews here on Nairaland. It gave me the confidence to approach him. The rest of the process, from making payments to delivery, went smoothly. However, I'd like to point out a few things I encountered during these processes. As I mentioned earlier, I bought the 100kmah capacity power bank, which the seller claimed had a runtime of about 18-20 hours. I'll discuss whether this claim was valid or not. 1. At first, I didn't have the complete money to purchase my desired specifications, so the seller agreed that I could pay in parts. I made a part payment, and he delivered the product when I was able to make the full payment. The delivery was hitch-free, and the power bank was in good working condition. 2. When I received the power bank, I was not happy about one thing: there was no label indicating the capacity of the power bank, such as 100kmah or 90kmah. I was skeptical and wondered how a product like this could be without a capacity label, even though I know that seeing just the label is not enough to conclude the capacity of the power bank. The seller admitted that he forgot to add the label. 3. One thing that pleased me about the seller was that he provided further assistance in setting up the power bank and with any other queries I had about handling it. I must commend him for this. Whenever I messaged him, he responded promptly. 4. The power bank has a fan to regulate the internal temperature, which is controlled during use and charging periods. Once, the fan made a loud and unpleasant noise while I was charging or using it unplugged. It did not happen all the time, but when it did, it was really abnormal and unpleasant. I immediately messaged the seller, and he responded quickly and offered to help. Later, I discovered that the noise was due to friction, so I added a little lubricant, and the noise stopped immediately and has not recurred. 5. Regarding whether the power bank lasts up to 18 or 20hrs. I'd say it really depends on your usage. The accurate way to check the runtime of the power bank is to use it without your PC's battery, reduce your screen's brightness, and do just light stuff on your pc like working with light programs. Doing this, I can confidently say that of course, it can really stay up to 18 or 20hrs or even more. But for my use case, this is usually not the case. I normally work with Android Studio a lot. It requires a lot of power and memory. So I sometimes get a runtime of about 10-15 hours on the power bank. As I said earlier, it depends on your usage and the programs or software you're running together with the screen brightness, etc. These things add up to the amount of load on the power bank which tends to reduce its runtime. 6. I would say that the power fits my need because we are usually guaranteed at least 8hrs of PHCN power supply every day. So this is not a very big challenge for me. Sometimes, the power supply can be epileptic though. I can be charging the power bank whenever there's a power supply and use it for work when there's no power. So it's suitable for my case. For those with little or no power supply in your area and who have it in mind to get the power bank, you might want to reach out to the seller and explain your need. I believe he has higher capacities that can last longer than mine. 7. Portability: One thing I love so much about the power bank is that it's very portable to carry around. Let's say you are traveling to a place without adequate power supply and plan to spend few days with your pc, in that case, I think the power bank is a very good candidate. Less I forget, the power bank I have has 2 ports for USB devices. If you plan to only use it to charge your phones or USB devices, it's a very good choice for that too. I observe that there's way less power consumption from the power bank when charging phones. You can also use it with your routers, dstv, rechargeable fans, etc. 8. The one I got has 4 bars which denote the amount of charge it has left. If you drain it to 0 bar, it takes less time(less than 2hrs) to charge it up to 3 bars. It takes a little longer(say 2-3 hours) to charge it to the 4th bar. So, I'd say it tends to charge faster. My Conclusion: I'm having a good time so far with using the power bank. In fact, I have also recommended the seller to about two of my friends. I must say that the power bank is really a brilliant all-in-one solution for your electronics. I forgot to mention that the seller also provides a solar panel to charge the power bank in case you want to complement it with the PHCN power supply. So, I can recommend the seller any day, anytime. Programming / How To Talk Like An Engineer by EbenG(m): 8:27pm On Dec 21, 2022 |
Hey guys, I found this useful and thought of sharing. How to talk like an Engineer | Laurie Barth "You are only an expert if you can make everyone else in the room understand complex topics. You are not an expert because you know how to use a tool really well. You are not an expert because you stand on stage and give conference talks. You are an expert because you make complexity understandable. Technology is breadth and depth. It's about expanding on your depth, making it approachable for everyone else, and being able to understand the breadth around you then and only then will you really talk like an engineer" - Laurie Barth Watch the full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Pi5Ofvrbc |

tosinhtml: Oh Okay, I haven't really built a fully-fledged UI-designed production-ready app yet. But, I have seen and read the opinion of other senior developers who have tried it; Compose is stable and production ready. Companies have started adopting it in their products screen by screen, component by component. I'll assume you talk this way probably because you haven't tried other Mobile UI frameworks like Flutter, Swift UI, and React. The focus and benefits of Compose aren't really about writing less code but of course, it's one of the benefits. The thing is the shift in paradigm from an Inheritance style which the classic XML is designed with to a declarative approach. In the classic XML, we have a View class(which represents a rectangular area on the screen and is responsible for drawing and event handling). The TextView class is a subclass of the View class, which means that TextView inherits all the properties and functionality from the View class, plus adds specific logic for displaying text to the user. The exact hierarchy goes with a Button and an EditText and other ViewGroups. It goes down like a tree structure. Of course, it helps everyone reuse the ability for example for an EditText to have the ability to display stuff. The drawback is that we are limited to building complex UIs. With Compose, we can reuse Composables very easily and it's very intuitive. You can do lots of customization and behavior for your UI very easily. The point about Compose is simply about Composition in object-oriented programming(OOP). You can read more about it. Like, this style of designing UI is overdue in Native Android. Flutter, Swift UI, and React are already doing well with this approach to building UI. The only thing I love well about building UI with XML is the WYSIWYG editor which is great. I think it's suitable and helpful for beginners. That said, you can still use Compose and XML together In your project. I just started learning about compose and it's just too awesome and beautiful. I remember the boilerplate code we usually write using recyclerview, adapter and view holder to display a list. This is now a breeze with LazyColumn composable with just 3-5 lines of code. This is just one out of many awesome stuff it has. When building your UI with compose, you're mostly thinking of rows and columns. I believe it's still growing and needs more improvement. Plus, google is fully supporting it 1 Like 1 Share |

parkervero: Lol, I don't think this is true though. The reverse is the case instead. Maybe you haven't tried learning kotlin. A lot more than 50% of people who have used kotlin never want to go back, especially those coming from Java Kotlin adoption has been highly aggressive (especially in Android application development), I strongly recommend adopting Kotlin. It's just expressive and direct In my opinion, Kotlin might replace Java in the future and many other languages in and out of the Java ecosystem. Learn Kotlin, it is not bad if you learn Java too |

Hightser: 3. Yes, firebase will log out the instance of such user. It's now left to you the developer to navigate the user to a specific screen after logging out, and clearing the backstack With Kotlin, you can easily interact with the native APIs of Android. Easier interaction with native apis means better performance. Also, Kotlin is Google's first class citizen for native Android dev. With that, it has full support from them already. I understand that with flutter, you can easily build beautifully animated UIs and even target both Android OS and iOS when developing apps. But lately, we've gotten a deep fresh air in terms of building native UI using the new Jetpack Compose toolkit. Unlike the old android view system where we have to use xml to design our UI then use code to interact with them. With Jetpack Compose, there's a shift in paradigm to a declarative one. From what I've seen, it's very much similar to flutter's way of building UI. I understand it quite new, but it's the future of developing UI with kotlin (only kotlin, no xml). Talking about targeting iOS with Kotlin?? It's possible now with Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile(KMM). Anyways, I might also one day switch to flutter and have a taste. Technologies will always keep changing 2 Likes |

Hightser: I want to commend your effort. You try wella. Seriously, I agree with you. e no easy for us mobile devs. I'm also an Android(kotlin) dev too. I'm learning alot These are some of my main observation though: 1. Maybe you could handle the backstack well during sign up/sign in. If you click on sign up /sign in text below sign up/login button continuously, you will notice that those previous screens are stored in the back stack. if you try to navigate back, it's takes you to the previous screens again and again. 2. If I'm logged in, if I click on the log out button, I'm taking to the sign in screen. However, if I click on the back button from my phone, I'm in again. Normally, you should clear the back stack. 3. Maybe you could also work on validating users' email. As it is now, users can use any (valid or invalid) email and it will log in In general, you have done a great job, kudos 5 Likes |
