Kenyans feel snubbed by Obama

https://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_404h/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2013/06/23/National-Politics/Images/RTR1GQKO.jpg
U.S. Senator Barack Obama addresses the crowd as he visits Nairobi's sprawling Kibera slum August 27, 2006.

When Anna Mulli heard that President Obama was planning to visit Africa, she expected him to visit her homeland. Like many of her countrymen, she considers the president a son of Kenya. Obama’s father was Kenyan; many of his relatives, including his grandmother, still live here. During the 2008 and 2012 U.S. presidential elections, Mulli said, she went to church to pray that Obama would win.

“But now he has neglected us,” said Mulli, sighing with disappointment as she entered a downtown Nairobi church for Sunday Mass.

As Obama embarks this week on his first substantial visit to Africa, Kenyans are venting anger and frustration — on social media, in newspaper editorials, on the streets — that their nation is not on his itinerary. Many had long expected Obama to pay a visit to his father’s ancestral home and allow Kenyans to embrace him, just like the Irish did during his emotional 2011 trip to Ireland, from where his mother’s ancestors hailed. Instead, Obama will visit Senegal, South Africa and neighboring Tanzania, whose capital, Dar es Salaam, is less than an hour’s flight from Nairobi.

“Just come and visit your grandma, Obama!” implored the headline of a blog post on the local radio station Capital FM’s Web site.

Beneath the surface, the presidential snub, as many Kenyans describe it, has spawned soul-searching over their choice of leadership and whether their nation is still the main U.S. ally in East Africa. Some even fear that the snub could make it more difficult for Kenya to attract foreign investment and tourists, dealing a blow to the nation’s economy.

Many Kenyans say the United States is punishing them for electing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his vice president, William Ruto, in March. The International Criminal Court has charged both men with orchestrating ethnic mobs to kill and pillage in the aftermath of the 2007 elections; they are set to face trial at The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity. During the run-up to this year’s elections, then-assistant Secretary of State for Africa Johnnie Carson publicly warned Kenyans that “choices have consequences.”

Last week, deputy national security adviser Benjamin J. Rhodes said that the “Kenyan people hold a special place in the president’s heart” and that the United States would work with Kenyatta. But Rhodes also made clear that the ICC charges were a concern. “It just wasn’t the best time for the president to travel to Kenya,” he told reporters in Washington.

Obama would not be the first Western leader reluctant to meet Kenyatta and Ruto. Last month, at a London meeting to assist Somalia, British Prime Minister David Cameron refused to be photographed with Kenyatta, according to British news reports, apparently fearing a backlash if the Kenyan leader was found guilty of the ICC charges.

‘Doesn’t want to taint his name’

In interviews, some Kenyans said that despite their disappointment, they understood why Obama is skipping their country on this visit. “I really wished he would have come to Kenya, to his roots,” said Sam Ombeki, 55, a community development organizer. “But let’s not pretend, either. There are a lot of questions about the integrity of our leadership. Obama doesn’t want to taint his name.”

Foreign Affairs › Obama African Trip Highlights And Updates by egift(op):
A special thanks to the White House Press Corps and the team at Washington Post for all the highlights and pictures - Egift

President Barack Obama set out on an eight-day trip to Africa on Wednesday that is aimed at reviving U.S. engagement with the continent but that will be overshadowed by the uncertain health of South Africa hero Nelson Mandela.

Obama's trip, his second to the continent as president, will take him to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. While the president hopes to spotlight trade and economic development themes, his visit would be dwarfed if Mandela's condition takes a turn for the worse.

The 94-year old former South African president remained hospitalized in critical condition after being admitted more than two weeks ago with a lung infection, the government said on Tuesday.

Air Force One carried Obama, his wife Michelle, their daughters Sasha and Malia, as well as the first lady's mother, Marian Robinson, and an Obama niece, Leslie Robinson.

Africans feel a special bond with Obama, the first African American U.S. president, and have been impatient for him to make an extended visit to the continent. Africans are also disappointed that the Obama administration has not engaged with the continent as much as the administrations of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Administration officials say the trip is an opportunity to jump-start the relationship. Obama's first stop will be Senegal, where he will visit Goree Island, the site of a monument to Africans who were sent to slavery in the Americas.

His next stop will be in South Africa, where aides say he will be available to visit Mandela but will defer to the wishes of the Mandela family to determine whether the former South African leader is up to such an encounter.

In South Africa, Obama is due to make a speech outlining his Africa policy at the University of Cape Town, where Robert F. Kennedy gave his famous 1966 address comparing the struggle against apartheid in South Africa with the struggle for civil rights in the United States.

The president will also visit Robben Island, where Mandela and other political prisoners were held, and visit a health clinic.

Obama's last stop will be in the East African nation of Tanzania, where he will take part in events with business leaders and visit a power plant.

And you think they will be bothered if we decided to boycott their country?

Pls kindly outline the pros and cons involved should he visit Nigeria?

Once again kindly give me not more than one reason why I should care.
If you don't know what to say or understand that enormity of the fact that Obama is visiting Africa for the second time without coming to Nigeria - then keep quite.

Additionally, look at the picture below (if you know why Mr. President and his VP will seat there even when nobody is attending to them) - then you will understand the meaning of visiting someone important when a dignitary visits a particular location.

Politics › PDP Path To 2015 Victory by egift(op):
In 2015, the Peoples Democratic Party are perfecting a unique strategy to ensure it retains the Presidency, irrespective of what the opposition come up with. Below are the various steps, which is currently being test-run. Do reply and identify what I may have omitted.

Here are the highlights they are fine-tuning. (NGF - Bata version)

- How to extract signatures/commitment from Governors/Nigerians.
- How to select a consensus candidate to avoid anyone from exercising their freedom of choice without undue pressures/intimidation.
- How to impose themselves and their candidate.
- How to manipulate/influence the election and its outcome to what they want.
- How best to reject the results, if not favourable.
- How to continuously push their predetermined decisions down the throat of Nigerians, should we reject.

All these steps above have been executed successfully, only 2 critical steps are left to finalize everything. These are:
- How to divide, destroy and make those that oppose to give it up.
- Finally, how to get everyone to accept the result they want.

Did I omit any important part of the strategy?

nelsonegware: Crisis in the NGF Regrettable- Uduaghan

Delta State Governor Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has stated that the crisi s rocking the Nigerian Governors Forum is highly regrettable and that no Governor is proud about the development since after the NGF elections were held. Governor Uduaghan stated this at a phone-in Programme organised by the Delta Broadcasting Service monitored in Warri.
Dr Uduaghan apologized to Nigerians over the actions of the Governors and assured that steps are being taken to resolve the impasse. Dr Uduaghan debunked the allegations that the Presidency was behind the crisis in the NGF but blamed the crisis on certain forces bent on breaking the NGF.
The Governor assured that as Governors they are talking to themselves to see how the crisis can be resolved amicably.
So Mr Uduaghan, who are "those bent on breaking the NGF"?

Politics › Re: Nigeria's Abraham Lincoln. by egift(m): 7:35am On Jun 25, 2013
When Lincoln and others secured the union, they the founding fathers set clear principle for the nation. Over the years American leaders expanded on those - rights, inequality, discrination, benefits to the people, etc.

But Gowon cannot get that honor because the problems that led to the war are still with us, recommendations from Aburi were not immplemented, the injustice against Ndigbo is outrightly denied and most Nigerians still suffer injustice and poverty. So nothing for Gowon.

Buhari/Fashiola 2015-2019 let's rebuild Nigeria.

Between Fashola, Oshiomole and Rochas who will get the most southern votes (SW, SE and SS)?

Two factors will inflence votes in the south - religion and ethic group.

I will go for Fashola. Because of the place of ACN in APC. Fashola is the face of the party. And its better to have SW votes on lock-down than gamble with SE votes (who may still go for "EBELE"wink.
Politics › Re: Sule Lamido Sets Eye On Presidency by egift(m): 7:21pm On Jun 24, 2013
ckkris: Buhari/Fashola CANNOT defeat Jonathan in 2015
In a free and fair election they will win a resounding victory. In a contest between Buhari/Fashola vs Jonathan/Sambo, here are the battle ground analysis:

Area of Strength:
Buhari/Fashola: SW and most part of the North
Jonathan/Sambo: SE and SS

50-50 split: Few parts of the North and MB

Other factors:
- The North want power back.
- SW through Fashola will basically become the second largest power block. And position itself to take over from 2019.
- Jonathan have disappoint many people than what he was in 2011.
- Buhari with a party that that was just few months old in 2011, secured a sizable volume of votes. Add APC in the mix, there is excess votes and counting.
- With a well articulated offers and a signed pack to the SE, our votes can be slitted.
- If Ngige can secure Anambra, he and Rochas can deliver something of value in the SE.

Why do I, from SE support Buhari/Fashola - with security solved, regional development encouraged, sound policies and infrastructure in place - Ndigbo can do exceptionally. And until there is an Igboman who can be accepted in the North, SW and in Igboland, I will not encourage anyone. Rochas should not do it, SE PDP will sabotage it.
