The frustrations of the Jonathan govt and cabinet is becoming evident by the minute. Intolerant they've become that they can't stomach constructive criticism, even be it an aggressive one, there are rules of engagement based on decorum and tact. Abati has fallen to the deepest abyss of rascality(sic) and hooliganism. How did he get to be this way, is a big mystery to me. He's made nonsense of his career and reputation. |
This project like it's predecessors will never, I repeat never come to light. We all know how the cookie crumbles when it comes to power generation in this ill country. Tis very, very, very, frustrating I tell y'all. |
Amaechi,Amaechi,Ameachi. How many times did i call you?For your own good, I'll advice you "port" to APC before the committee submits its report, because you'll never get a fair hearing.Remember my nigqer,"he who pays the piper dictates his tunes",nough said. ![]() |

A 48-year-old divorced Briton locked in a bitter custody battle confessed on Sunday that he had killed his two young children by slitting their throats near the eastern French city of Lyon. The bodies of a five-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were discovered on Saturday afternoon in the man’s apartment in Saint-Priest, a southeastern suburb of Lyon. The unemployed father confessed to the gruesome crime “but did not go into details of the motive”, prosecutors said. The tragedy was “linked to a bitter separation” and “the state of his visitation rights which he considered insufficient”, another judicial source told AFP. “In 2010, there was an incident of violence with his spouse which led to restrictions on his visitation rights,” the source said. He was arrested on Saturday evening in Lyon and placed in custody. A judicial official said a knife which is thought to have been the murder weapon had been found. The man had visitation rights but only in the presence of another person, the official said, adding that this was the first time he had brought the children home to his apartment on the second floor of a four-storey building without a third party being present. He remained in custody late Sunday and was to be presented to a prosecutor on Monday when he was expected to be charged. Police were also questioning his ex-wife, notably to learn more about “the legal framework of the children’s visits to their father”. “We understand that a British national has been arrested in France,” a Foreign Office spokesman told AFP. “We are in contact with the French authorities and we await the outcome of their investigation.” Several witnesses said the man fled on roller skates after his former wife encountered him on the stairwell of the building and saw him with bloodstained clothes. She immediately alerted the police. A neighbour said the mother was soon joined by relatives, including her brother-in-law and the children’s grandparents, and was lucid although in shock. A psychiatrist from the emergency services was immediately dispatched to give her counselling. “They were devastated but relatively composed,” the neighbour said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “She said: ‘He has killed them’. I tried to comfort her saying we didn’t know as yet although I knew at the bottom of my heart that they were dead.” Ahmed Benguedda, another neighbour, told AFP the couple had divorced “two or three years ago” and that the man had drinking problems and was a wife beater. After the divorce the wife, who worked as an assistant accountant, moved out of the apartment they had jointly bought and was living in the Isere region of eastern France. But the children were “well-balanced”, said Benguedda, whose seven-year-old daughter often played with them. “All the people in this building are in a state of shock,” Benguedda said. More neighbours were being questioned by the police on Sunday. |

Why Is Cannabis Illegal ? I am really curious as to why marijuana is illegal. When the topic of legalization comes up, most people that I meet fail to give compelling reasons other than the ones they received during anti-drug week in fifth grade; we are all adults now, and the mystery of why a seemingly harmless recreational drug is illegal is not solved by a conclusive "Just say no." It is not physically addictive. But like any pleasure inducing activity, it can be mentally addictive; Facebook stalking shares this quality. It cannot be resolved for use in a deadly poison (ie. opium and coniine). A documentary I watched a little while ago stated that one would have to smoke 1500 lbs of marijuana in 15 minutes in order to overdose, any human with that kind of lung capacity will have better things to do than seeking a deathly high. It has very little long term effects. Alcohol has liver damage, tobacco has its lung cancer and the irritated "I'm going out for a smoke" habit. Campaigns claim that marijuana kills brain cells; but I've grown up among extremely intelligent people who have done nothing but smoke weed and read throughout their school careers, it must be killing off the bad brain cells. It does not cause aggressiveness. The association between alcohol and bar fights is ubiquitous. However, how many fights have you heard about involving two people intoxicated with marijuana? If anything, cannabis should be used as a peacekeeper in riots; peace, love and unity would be the only thing coming out of the tear gas canisters. All jokes aside, the question still remains. Why has this plant been prohibited? Was there really a legitimate reason to do so besides fulfilling a conservative right- wing's death wishes? If anyone can really give me some legitimate, non-contradictory and non-hypocritical reasoning I will be forever grateful. I Have Murdered Poverty - Saka https://punch.iwayafricanigeri.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Hafiz-Oyetoro.jpg Hafiz Oyetoro’s controversial move from Etisalat to MTN as a brand face seems to have changed his fortune for good, writes CHUX OHAI South Africa-based scholar, Prof. Kole Omotosho, and lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Hafiz Oyetoro, do not belong to the same generation. The distance between Nigeria and SA also implies that they cannot be meeting each other constantly. Yet, they both have something in common. They have the enviable record of successfully combining their work as lecturers with advertising. Apart from the fact that Omotosho is a writer, best known for his controversial novel about Nigeria – Just Before Dawn – he has made a name for himself in SA where his face has graced several advert bill boards. The latest is the one in which he is advertising for Fidelity Bank Plc. Also, both men are household names in SA and Nigeria. While Omotosho is almost worshipped as a cult hero called Yebo Gogo, Oyetoro is popularly known as Saka among TV viewers in Nigeria. Incidentally, at a time when Omotosho’s 70th birthday is still the talk of the literary community, Oyetoro, who has also established himself as an actor and a popular face on TV, also recently stirred the scene. This is courtesy of his ‘shocking’ appearance in the MTN’s I don port advert, a commercial that many have described as an excellent one – not minding the fact that some believe it is a below-the-belt jab for Etisalat, the telecoms company for which he worked as an advertising model for some time. Ever since Oyetoro’s crossover, in which he is required to lead a major advertising campaign to drive the network portability initiative by Nigerian Communication Commission, Nigerians have not stopped talking about him and his amazing rise to fame and riches. The deal is believed to be worth about N20m, which is enough to give the hardworking and self-effacing actor a clean break from poverty. But while the man himself has declined to comment on the positive twist in his fortune, he was recently quoted in THE NEWS as saying that he had finally conquered poverty. “To the glory of God, level don change. Let me put it like that. I believe that in the nearest future, level will finally change. But now, level don dey change. I have murdered poverty and God has finally murdered it for me. I am no longer poor, but very comfortable,” he said. In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, he said he was not ready to talk about his new contract with the telecommunications company. “For now, I don’t want to say anything. I promise you that I will talk at the appropriate time,” he said. But when asked if his new responsibilities as a brand ambassador for MTN would not clash with his job at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, he replied, “I am a responsible civil servant. My duty is to teach other people’s children well, just as I would expect others to teach mine. So I cannot abandon my job. I assure you, everything has been taken care of.” A few years ago, little was known about Oyetoro. Although he studied Theatre Arts at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ago Iwoye worked as a part-time lecturer at the Olabisi Onabanjo University before moving to Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education in Ijanikin, Oyetoro remained relatively obscure for a long while. In those days, he managed to appear in a few insignificant theatre productions, in which he played mostly comic roles. It took a while before the qualities that would raise him a notch higher than most of his peers began to manifest. First, Nollywood came calling with an opportunity to establish himself as a regular face on the lighted screen. Oyetoro, who was burning up with a desire to prove himself, had to grab it. Still, a few years later and with appearances in hundreds of Nollywood films to his credit, he was far from hitting the limelight. Then another opportunity presented itself. This time, it came from Centrespread, an advertising agency. The agency wanted him to be their model for its advertising campaigns with Etisalat. The deal clicked and Oyetoro’s transformation began in earnest. That was when, for the purpose of the campaigns, he assumed a new identity: he became known ‘Saka’, a character that he helped create along with other Thespians in 2004 for a TV comedy series titled ‘House A-part’. Eventually, Oyetoro became the face of Etisalat campaigns. Within a short time, Saka had become a household name and Oyetoro could look forward to a brighter future free of the clutches of poverty. In an interview published on the Internet, the actor cum lecturer admitted that he was involved in a bitter struggle against poverty for a long time. “Poverty was my friend and family for a long time. As you sit with me here side by side, that was how I was sitting with poverty in the past,” he said. The struggle against poverty had also cost him the opportunity to settle down early enough in life. “There was a lady who disqualified me because I didn’t have a car. But, thank God, I eventually got a wife who genuinely loves me and who I genuinely love,” he said. http://www.punchng.com/feature/midweek-revue/i-have-murdered-poverty-saka/ |

For some time now, owners of vehicles with tinted glass in Nigeria have been going through a rough time with policemen who see the situation as one from where they can make up for the personal and institutional revenue losses that have been plaguing them ever since the removal of roadblocks from the nation’s highways. Without going into the legal and policy arguments on the issue, it is obvious that some vehicles (outside the statutorily designated exceptions) are actually so opaquely tinted that any rational person seeing them would naturally think that the occupants are into something sinister. They are so darkly tinted that someone outside, no matter how close, cannot see whoever is inside. Any scrupulous law enforcement- minded person would naturally suspect that there is something fishy about such unusual vehicles. On the other hand, most vehicles, especially vans and SUVs that are manufactured in North America, Europe and Japan come with tinted glass with the thickness graduated from the front to the rear. In all these vehicles, it is never a problem for anyone standing close to see or identify the occupants. In fact, the front passengers’ windows are generally and rightly of a lighter tint. The reason why these cars are tinted range from the need to enhance the performance of the air- conditioning system, protection from harmful glare and the general room-type comfort of modern automobiles. They don’t have criminals and other deviants in mind and as a matter of fact, none of these factory tints will meet the demands of anyone trying to avoid visibility as they are reasonably transparent. Unfortunately, in Nigeria we have developed a national worldview that seeks to avoid rational responses to emerging challenges by resorting to extreme and bizarre solutions that are, in most cases, counterproductive or are indicative of palpable intellectual laziness. Nowhere is this mentality more prevalent than in the areas of crime prevention and law enforcement. That is why it is often possible for the police to block road traffic with lines of vehicles stretching into kilometres just because they are “searching for criminals”. Common sense should have made it clear that only a foolish and suicidal criminal will wait patiently in a roadblock queue to be apprehended. Little wonder therefore that no wanted person has ever been caught at such foolish and annoying checkpoints. The only possible thing happening at such places is the opportunity of the officers manning them to collect illicit tolls and unlawfully enrich themselves at the expense of security. Specifically about tinted glass ban in Nigeria, the only reason that the authorities thought it necessary is their belief that criminals also use them to shade themselves from detection. It ought to be the rational expectation that any vehicle that is tinted has unwittingly invited the scrupulous law enforcement officer upon itself as that would be easily profiled to be something questionable. Unfortunately, that will be the car they would approach obsequiously and be asking “Oga, anything for your boys?” Their only alternative is to lump all those with tinted glass together as criminals who must then cough up something if they are to continue on their journeys. Recently, the Senate sensing the abuses and unfair harassment that have followed the recent IG’s directive on tinted glass has initiated a legislative process intended on repealing or nullifying the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, Cap M21 Laws of the Federation (Formerly Decree 6 of 1991). A proper reading of section 1(1) of the act shows that the Police have been wilfully misinterpreting it to harass innocent road users who have the misfortune of driving vehicles with any form of tint. What the law actually prescribes is that “no person shall cause any glass fitted to a vehicle to be tinted, shaded, coloured lightly or thickly or treated in any way as to render obscure or invisible persons or objects inside the car.” The critical issue here is not whether the tint was factory-fitted or not, it is whether it obscures or makes occupants invisible. Simple! The police know they cannot sustain their nebulous argument based on this Act before a court of law. So it is just a source of illegitimate revenue and power show. As long as the tint on a vehicle does not render “obscure” or “invisible” whatever is inside it, there can never be a sustainable charge on it. It is not the expectation of the law that any subjective interpretation by a police officer who probably needs an eye test for his poor vision to be the conclusion as to what is obscured or ordinarily invisible. Of course, there are some wilfully tinted vehicles that do not allow for either vision or identification of occupants. These are the targets of that law and certainly not those factory-fitted ones that were tested for transparency in the general interests of traffic safety for the occupants and every other person concerned where they were made. It is inconceivable that a vehicle would pass the rigorous inspection of safety personnel in the manufacturing countries if the glass, as tinted, would lead to the inability to see those inside or for those inside not to see what is happening outside. If the Police could just do what is right instead of the present situation of wholesale embarrassment and harassment of innocent road users, there should be no need to nullify the present statute. Perhaps the dictatorial origins of the Decree that metamorphosed into the present law are beclouding the logical and inevitable juristic perception that the demands of the rule of law under a supreme constitution have brought into being: the days of subjective interpretation of military decrees are far gone. All Nigerian laws, to be valid, must now meet the standards of objectivity, reasonableness and constitutionality. The present abusive, indiscriminate and oppressive application of the tinted cars laws by the police cannot stand the muster of judicial review and that of common sense. It is the subsisting injustice that the current initiative before the senate on tinted glass seeks to stop. Otherwise, it is a law that was necessitated by the reality in the country but which the enforcers have discredited irretrievably. It is not a crime for a vehicle to have a tinted glass that does not obscure visibility either from outside or from inside it. |
