To be honest, I'm not really a fan of this private PM thing because it doesn't create a wealth on knowledge on the thread. Also, what if my answer is wrong...? how would you know, lol.

Anyways, I'll accept it now - so you can be happy grin

Hello people, does one get penalized for stopping before the examiner asks one to stop during the IELTS speaking test.

No - you wouldn't be penalized. Unfortunately, you will be graded based on how much you said in that "short" time and how much of it made sense.

The advise we've received on this thread is to keep talking (as long as it makes sense) until you are asked to stop. It's safer that way.

If I'm right, Engineer in training; meaning you have satisfied the academic requirements but need work experience. Yes, I work in the oil patch at the moment. What I do know right now is that the oil sector is getting back on its feet. Many companies will hire you right now even without experience. I'm not sure if you're already in Canada or not but the minimum they would require of you are your safety tickets, especially first aid and H2S Alive. Both won't cost you up to $350 max. With those you can get like a well testing position and since you've had the academic know how you can attain a supervisor position fast. Supervisors make between $7k to $10k bi-weekly.
As par my experience, it's been a nice but sometimes bumpy ride, sometimes work is hectic at other times it's not. I work 21days on and 7days off. Sometimes we travel out of town and when we do we get extra pay (and of course they are always gonna pay for your hotel). By default, some caucasians will always feel like they know more than you do and would want to act bossy but I sabi keep those kind in check. Long story short, you'd be making lots of money but having too little time to spend it.

I like the sound of that cheesy cheesy ...making lots of money! shocked

Thanks for your response.

Yes to all 3 questions - EIT is Engineer-In-Training, I have satisfied the academic requirements and I require CAN work experience.

No, I'm not yet in CAN. I'm just trying to get all the groundwork going prior to when I relocate. I presume it's not advisable to complete the First Aid and H2S Alive trainings from outside CAN...is that correct?

pls how much did it cost to upgrade your ECA to ICAP?

Hi-

The total was CAD162.72.

100 for the upgrade, 7 for delivery to APEGA, 30 for the additional copy they sent to me (can't remember if this is compulsory), 7 for delivery to me, then Harmonised Sales Tax of 18.72. If the additional copy is not compulsory, then you might decide not to go for it.

All the best!

What if you have a family member who is resident in Canada, can you use his utility bill etc as Proof of Address? Will this Suffice for those doing a short landing?

I don't think you can use it. Your proof of address has to have your name on it - that's why it is a PROOF of YOUR address. Someone suggested getting a phone plan (a one month plan) and use the bill processed for that as a Proof of Address.

I stand to be corrected.

Hello friends, I have come again o....I promise this is the last question before I submit our application!

Please is it ok if i write distance learning with marker on my husband's master's ECA certificate just to note that he did it by distance learning aside the LOE? Or will an LOE right after the certificate suffice?

Hi - Please don't write anything on an offical document. If you do so, it will be classed as an alteration and can render the entire document unusable (i.e not fit for use).

Salford and Erhnie ( although I'm not an engineer I'm trying to understand this whole process for my husband since he's very busy right now) if I understand correctly... No matter how many years u have, u will start with EIT when u enter canny. When u have acquired one year experience in Canada, u can now add ur previous experience. If it's up to 5 years in total u are a professional.....

That's true...to the best of my knowledge (I'm also learning the requirements).

To qualify for PEng, he needs 4 years (not 5) work experience (in related discipline) but he has to get 1 year from CAN as you've highlighted.

Note that APEGA is for those intending to reside in alberta..other provinces have their own licensing body.

For real it's a really tough and scary decision. I'm not as excited about it as I was when I was still waiting.

This is especially harder for we single applicants, I'm not even sure I want to go this year, I don't even know....

I hated Manchester weather for the one year I spent schooling there and cudnt wait to move back to Naija so I wonder how I'd cope with Canada weather.

It is well..... Like I've also been advised, pray about it and God will see you through.

Whew - good to know I'm not alone in this rollercoaster of emotions! Actually, the weather is the least of my problems - I guess that's because I currently reside close to the North sea cheesy

Hmmm, if I show my hubby this, we will not relocate to Canada.
I have started developing cold feet as well. It seems to me that it is easier to get professional jobs in UK than Canada as you will hardly find indigenous people with the right qualifications. For example, if you are an Engineer, you can easily get a good job in the UK even with your naija qualifications. No need to register as an Engineer to be recognised as an Engineer. The main issue with UK is to get right to work. Foreign students that studied in UK are forced to go back to their countries as it is so difficult to stay back. As their own children are not studying Engineering, there are a lot of jobs for people that have visas. In fact, recruiters can disturb you with job vacancies once they realise that you are an Engineer.

The opposite is Canada. There are too many professionals. Students wait behind after their studies and the jobs are not that many.

I also agree with your statements on how some things can be expensive in Canada. I wanted to travel to visit a friend in another province. I thought it will be like getting a train ticket from London to Glasgow. When I saw the cost, I changed my mind immediately. One is kinda stuck in one province.

We need to sit down and highlight the advantages vs disadvantages of UK and Canada before coming to conclusion on what to do.

What is your own opinion though? Should we relocate to Canada and start all over? I am asking cos you have lived in both places and you know better

We are in this together and I also await a response. I felt so "afraid" when I got my PR...packing up my life here in the UK and heading to CANADA maybe one of the toughest decisions I'll have to make in my life, apart from marriage grin Jesus please take the wheels and give me wisdom like Solomon to do the right thing!

Anyone coming from the UK would be a bit shocked after landing in Canada, some would be very shocked..depends on your level of comfort in the UK.lol

...when i landed, i disliked Canada for the first 6 month or thereabout. Things cost more money here. From banking fees to airline ticket to broadband internet plans e.t.c Transport services in cities wasn't as advanced as the UK, even the kebab do not taste as nice as the ones sold in the UK, no greggs (for some of us that like food). The cheap megabus and national express to everywhere is absent, no virgin bullet trains, Pubs are not so good in Canada..even non existent in some places, TV programs were not interesting... No canadian version of lord sugar, britains got talent, xfactor, deal or no deal, the weakest link, the numerous documentaries on itv, channel 4, bbc e.t.c but they do sometimes show the american versions. The only reason i kept my cable on is cos of kids channels.

With time i adjusted, since i have made up my mind that i am making the country my home. Now i like the country and appreciate the personal space, but i still miss the UK alot of times.

Oh my!!! There goes my kebab and Xfactor.... sad is there Judge Judy though...? hahahah

thanks for this. how easy is it for someone with only a nigerian engineering degree to practice in canada? is it better to get a canadian masters degree to increase one's employability ?

I have no clue my dear. All my work experience (in Engineering) is from the UK so I'm not in the best position to answer your question. Hopefully someone else picks this up and points you in the right direction.

Hi Ehrnie,

Please why are you going for EIT instead of P.Eng, seeing that you have more than 5 years experience?

Thanks.

Same thought bro/sis...but I was told that even though my UK experience will count, I still need at least 1 year Canadian work experience. This means that after relocating to CAN and working (in related field) for a year, I can add my UK work experience to the 1 year Canadian experience to claim the full 4 years work experience.

Is this different from anything you've read or heard...? I am very open to opinions/ suggestions/advise....Thanks!

Thank you, this is very helpful. Some few clarifications though:

1. Do i have to list APEGA as a separate recipient as that option comes at an extra cost or is an E-Report automatically sent to WES.
2. I read in your previous email that you called WES to clarify the sending of undergrad transcripts again. Did this effort yield any positive results? Do you know if this cumbersome process can be waived?

I sent you a PM, pls lets discuss when you get a chance. All the best.

You are most welcome. Below are answers to your questions -
1. Yes you have to list APEGA (that's the main reason for this evaluation anyways). It cost $7 (I think) for delivery to APEGA. You may choose not to pay the $30 for the additional copy to be sent to you (it's up to you really).
2. No, the WES call didn't yield the result I wanted or expected. They only insisted my uni has to verify the transcript (it feels like the WES reps just read out the same scripted message). You can try your luck though - could be different.

All the best!

Usually, it takes three business days to update once document is received.

I'd however advice you return to your school and if possible, make them respond again to the verification in your presence.

Alternatively, you can request the response be typed, and sent via courier. This I think is what some members did to cross your hurdle after much back and forth between WES and their alma mater. 12 days is way too long for your status not to have changed.

I'll chase this up with my Uni again. Strange though because my contact at the uni sent me a copy of the email they sent to WES. Its puzzling indeed.

Thanks for your response.

Hi - how long does it take WES to update the online status of an applicant with the documents they've received from an institution? My university claim they have sent verification to WES, but my WES online portal still states "verification pending". It's been 12 days since the Uni responded. Can anyone help clarify this...

Thanks!

Hello, how are you going about your APEGA /WES course by course evaluation? Since they already have the transcript, do i really need to go through the entire process again? Please lets discuss. Thanks

I started from the APEGA website. Put in an application for EIT and was then directed to the WES website where I followed the step by step guide for APEGA licensing applicants. My previous posts gives a break down of the cost. See summary below -

How to Obtain a World Education Services ICAP Report

1.Register for APEGA's Member Self-Service Centre, and receive your ID number. This ID number will be required to order your WES Report.

2.Follow the instructions to continue to the WES website for the next step of the application process.

3.Follow the instructions provided by WES. If you already have an evaluation report from WES, you may need to upgrade that report to an International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

4.WES will send the completed evaluation report to APEGA digitally. Physical copies will not be accepted

On the WES website it states that the docs I used for my initial application will be transferred to my new upgraded application (i.e. ECA to Course-by-Course) BUT surprisingly they came back with an email saying they are awaiting verification of my BSc transcript from my University. All other docs (i.e. my MSc + BSc degree certs and MSc transcript verification) were transferred from my previous application so I didn't have to do anything. I don't know if this is now the norm, but yeah that's the process I had to undergo.

Please note that APEGA licensing is for those who will be settling in Alberta and want to practice Engineering.

All the best!

I will be applying for an upgrade from the doc by doc assessment to the course-by-course variant soon. I noticed on their site that you still have to specify what the course-by-course assessment will be for, or could it be I made a mistake. They gave options of Education, Employment etcetra, greed? Are you absolutely sure that one will still have to go through the cycle of verification, courier with to achieve the upgrade ?

Hi - what do you mean by doc by doc? is that the normal ECA for EE? Just to clarify.

Yes, I had to specify what the course-by-course is for. Since mine is for APEGA, I was directed from the APEGA website (I started my registration with APEGA 1st) to WES website and I followed the instructions on WES website for those applying for APEGA.

I am not absolutely sure that one has to re-verify...but since I have sent WES 3 emails now and spoken to 3 different WES representatives on the phone, I can only conclude that one has to re-verify. Strangely though it is only my BSc that shows "awaiting transcript verification" my MSc shows all docs verified (including transcripts). Could this be because my BSc is from Nigeria and MSc from overseas? I don't know my bro/sis. What I know is that I have contacted someone in Nigeria to help chase this up with my Uni.

As per courier, etc., I paid $162.72 ($100 for the upgrade + $7 for delivery to APEGA + $30 for the additional copy they will send to me + $7 for delivery to me + $18.72 harmonized sales tax). That is my breakdown.

No I didnt. But I think the Course by Course is more detailed so transcript is scrutinized. I say this because for my spouse's verification, the school only verified via email. No hard copy transcript was sent to them. It took them about 20 working days to complete the whole process. Meanwhile for my course by course, hard copy transcript was couriered to them. Just my opinion

Thanks for your response. So does this mean they don't scrutinise the transcript for ECA? This is really annoying and confusing all at the same time.

Anyways I will make my 3rd call to WES today and if it's the same story, I'll arrange the verification. Tor.

Yes. Upgraded from completed course-by-course to ECA for EE. Paid about CAN $67. Got the e-copy in 24hours. Hard copy in 48hours to Canada address.

whew I wish mine was this easy. So I have a completed ECA report which I used for EE. Now I have applied for an upgrade of this to the course-by-course and shockingly WES is asking for verification again from my Uni (i.e. for the BSc). They aren't asking for a verification for my MSc...just my BSC. wonder why they want to verify what has already been verified. I thought I was done with chasing my Nigerian Uni up & down to respond to WES.

Did you experience this at all? I had to even pay $162.72.

Hi - see extract below from the CIC website

•Police certificates are required up front and are mandatory for each country (except Canada) where an individual has lived for a total of six months or more. This instruction is for the purpose of the completeness check under section R10.

So, the answer is NO, you don't need a PCC for 5 weeks training.

Never worked in the patch even when Alberta was on full steam. I worked office roles(design) in Red deer/Calgary.
When all was good in alberta, you could get your advanced class 5 drivers license, safety certifications from enform in calgary or ndt/power/process operator classes at sait or nait, and that would keep some change in your pocket. You could still research those options as you never can tell. You might still be able to break it in with some certifications.

As per licensing...i gave some info on my earlier post. Much also depends on your discipline. Civil guys without their license are still doing alright if you can break into material testing(not met/mat)...still lots of road maintenance going on with lots of OT.

Thanks for your response. I'll research the options as advised.
