Education › Re: Why Is Northern Nigeria So Backward Academically? by ektbear: 3:12am On Aug 02, 2012 |
madridsta007: To say the North is backward academically is more than a fact, infact more than a truth. Plenty of statistics in JAMB, WAEC abounds, even there leaders admit it. It is quite shameful to hear some people who I believe are northerners here, denying that it exists. You can never solve a problem by denying it exists, that's a defeatist mentality. The number of graduates a University in the north churns out for the NYSC program, more than half of them are usually from the southern part of the country. I am sure we all know the statistics, no need bugging us with such.
I grew up in the North, speak their language fluently, but since left the place. The problem with the north isn't the children or the youths in terms of education , it is a social and leadership problem. In the north a father would want his children to go and beg or sell petty things to cater for the large family, thus schooling isn't a priority. In the north a father would want his daughter to be married at age 12, thus schooling isn't an option. In the north, a father would want his son to cater for the goats, cows and sheeps he has, thus schooling isn't an option. In the north, leaders would siphon money meant for academic infrastructure into his pocket, while ensuring that his own children even his daughters go to school. I once followed my secondary school mates to participate in an Inter-School quiz competition. During the competition, we went out to visit some schools and hold a bit of motivational talk with them (I was in SS1 at that time), and we had a list of schools we were to visit. When we went to the 'schools' to visit, we were shocked to be told by the village head that they don't exist. They were simply 'ghost' schools, ghost teachers, ghost students, ghost academic materials supplied.... The list of 'ghosts' is endless. And the point was that the head of education there (or whatever he/she is now called) would connive with the local government chairmen, village heads, ward heads, create these ghost schools to siphon money from UBE allocations. It was so shocking and sad to me and my friends that were there. That is the north for you. The politicians up there are to be blamed as well. There seem to be an unwritten rule to ensure the children of the masses don't go to school so their minds can be flexible and gullible enough to be used as agents for political and religious violence. And again, there seem to be a conflict with the religion up there and western education. They would rather send their children to evening Islamic schools than day 'western' schools. When you have this happening at grass-root, early child development stages in children, you end up developing an academically backward generation. And all this was years before a certain Islamic group called 'Boko Haram' showed up. I did what I could there, holding seminars, leading volunteers to drag children to school, at least I left there with a clean conscience.
We can go on and on. That is the north for you. That land has so much potential, with its population, they can become the next India. However, the first seed towards solving the academic impasse they find themselves in must be sown, which is the rejection that academic backwardness doesn't exist. Because it does. At shockingly alarming levels. wowza. |

Politics › Re: Jonathan Travels To Jaimaica & Trinidad-And-Tobago by ektbear: 2:32am On Aug 01, 2012 |
Eziachi: Just for the sake of argument, Forget about Boko Haram, what is really the essence of this monthly foreign travels by Jonathan? If you are to reduce Nigeria to the level of a person, say a financially successful person, do that individual go on a travel everything single day? Be it luxury holiday or business tripS, especially in this digital age when businesses are cutting down using technology to avoid non essential trips?
Even if Nigeria is so rich that these men don't know what to do with the money, is all these trips really on the highest scale of preference of Jonathan as the CEO of Nigeria state with legions of problem that needs every penny they can get?
What is these trips costing Nigeria taxpayers, when this guys rate of borrowing in the name of the state is spiralling out of control? When their external reserve is empty? Someone made an argument that the invitation to travel to these two countries were made months in advance, but be it as it may, must you honor every invitation given to you? Even as an individual, do you always honor all invitations extended to you, especially when your bank balance is almost in the red or is it just like most Nigeria rulers ethics of spending money that doesn't belong to them even if it the nation is on its last legs?
In fact an in- law mine is getting married in few weeks time in Montego Bay Jamaica, but I decided not to honor the invitation, mainly for two reasons, the cost and a business commitment that conflicted with the wedding, but my wife will travel to represent us.
Nigeria has mountain of debts and still borrowing but Jonathan deems it fit to jet off at he expense of the taxpayers every single time. The excuse last months was his commitment to save the planet and then bring investors along, hence he must be in Brazil. So, this time, what is the excuse?
Every single nation at the moment, including the super rich ones are cutting down on every aspect of spending, including important public spendings, but here we are, a leader of world's 4th rate economy junketing the globe at every given opportunity with out counting the pennies. Some of you should try and investigate how much it cost to refuel a jet? And then see how much it must be costing Nigeria, just fuelling Jonathan plane every single year and then had nothing in return for it. +100 |

Politics › Re: If Social Media Was Criminalised In Nigeria: What Would You Do? by ektbear: 9:22am On Jul 31, 2012 |
Well, the point is, if you are defining "social media" purely by the dictionary definition of "social", then you also include 90s-style internet forums and technologies from the 80s like Usenet.
Which to me seems too broad. And moreover contradicts the common understanding of the word...rich, interactive websites built on Web 2.0 technologies.
The question I asked is a bit open-ended...I don't think one is likely to provide a good answer just by consulting a dictionary (for reasons stated both in this post and in the previous one).
Nairaland has some elements of social media, but is built entirely on pre-Web 2.0 technologies. So the answer isn't really obvious, I think. Which is part of the reason I asked the question. |
Politics › Re: If Social Media Was Criminalised In Nigeria: What Would You Do? by ektbear: 8:05am On Jul 31, 2012 |
"Social media" is a term associated with Web 2.0. Facebook, Twitter, websites which use real-time, interactive technologies like AJAX, Flash, etc. Internet forums like Nairaland existed even in the 1990s. So if an internet forum is "social media", I guess so was Usenet in the 80s. Btw, a tip on general English usage: Neologisms like "social media", unlikely that one will get the definition exactly correct by simply looking up one part of the word. Your attempt and failure is a perfect example of this |
