That picture is pretty cool. |
What angered me the most was seeing useless youths on facebook saying "well done sir" when Aregbesola posted those pictures. Well, these sycophantic Lagos ACN elders must have been young once, eh? It is by a person's behavior as a youth that you know what type of adult they will become. And conversely, a man's behavior in old age must have started from his youth. I dunno what is up with this culture of worshiping people who do wrong things just because they are powerful or have money. From useless, foolish ACN elders down to useless, foolish youths. |
Most other leaders have the common sense to at least APPEAR humble. Barack Obama I am sure thinks he is the sh1t. Nothing wrong with that. But he knows enough not to be ostentatious about it. |
Obama's birthday. Did you see the governor of Illinois or whatever posting sycophantic, c0ckfondling pictures on facebook about Obama (as Aregbesola did for Tinubu)? Did you see Obama shut down the senate for his birthday celebration? Did you see Obama eating a N1 million cake (Ok fine, the # is probably inflated, but still.) The man does not understand what leadership is about. It was a very disgusting display of arrogance, to be quite honest. Yeah, really hard to like Tinubu...very vain, froglike, toadish looking man |
I don't even get it. He is not a particularly popular guy...he is/was just a convenient means to an end. He doesn't represent the best even his party has to offer. It would be a gross miscalculation for him to seek the presidency. That is not his role...he should be an Axelrod or Rove sort of figure within the party, not the actual "face." Then again, all of this birthday celebration stuff he was doing has taught me that he is an arrogant and vain individual..perhaps he doesn't understand his role and aspires for more than he can reasonably get. |
What exactly are SE governors supposed to do aside from recalling their folk? Why not blame the Northern governors/leaders for the insecurity in their domain? |
How can the guy buying french fries from my burger joint tell me the owner who to appoint? You are the customer. I am the salesman and owner. You are only a "shareholder" in my business in that you buy what I sell. You don't get to dictate who runs the bank unless you put money into it. End of story. |
Eh. Most of the stereotypes he says are largely true. Just that they don't apply to the so-called Middle Belt, but rather to the so-called "core North." |
It may be called the world bank, but most of the funds come from the West. Or is it the impoverished third world countries who beg the WB for funds who you claim also fund it? As Kilode said, he who pays the piper calls the tune |
Sycophantic elders. How then are the young supposed to have respect for the old when the old behave so foolishly? |
President of what? Lol These so-called elders are jokers |
Part of the agenda here seems to be the rest of the world wanting to poke their finger in America's eye. Which is fine of course...but don't then try to couch it in language of "meritocracy", etc, etc. Just be blunt and say you don't want them to appoint the head of the World Bank any more. In which case, you need to bring out your check book and fund your own organization.. |
As much as I generally tend to agree with the Economist's arguments, in this case I don't. Cronyism arguments sort of assume that Person A is appointing Person B for reasons other than pure merit to manage collective property. But again, the WB is not collective property...it is largely bankrolled by the Western world. So I don't think anyone should be too offended if they appoint whom they see fit to manage it. After all, it isn't your own money being used, is it? You may be more qualified than my cousin to manage my business, but surely if it is my property I can choose whoever I like w/o answering to anyone. Finally, regarding qualifications, sure, Kim is not a PhD level economist. But then again, neither was Wolfowitz and at least a few of the past WB presidents. I don't think anyone is arguing that Kim is completely and utterly unqualified for the job, are they? |
nah just human beings like anyone else. no more or less wicked on average. |
disgusting |

Looks like we are witnessing the birth of another country on the African continent. Surprising to me that these Tuareg rebels have defeated Mali's army so quickly...looks like the influx of their kin from Libya has helped. And of course, doesn't help when your own soldiers join the rebellion.. In a further blow to any possible government counter-offensive, Colonel El Hadj Ag Gamou, the most trusted Tuareg in the army, told France's RFI radio he had joined the rebels with 500 men. |
BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's junta yielded to the threat of sanctions on Sunday, pledging to start handing power back to civilians before a midnight deadline, while in the north, separatist rebels seized the ancient trading post of Timbuktu. Amadou Sanogo, an army captain who led a March 21 coup, pledged to reinstate the constitution and all state institutions before transferring power back to civilians via elections. His promise followed last week's threat by West African regional bloc ECOWAS to impose sanctions, including the potentially crippling closure of borders around the land-locked state. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-rt-us-malibre8300h8-20120401,0,5501379.story |
interesting |
Yeah, you'd imagine that with any of these old fables, different versions would appear. Now, what I wonder is if this Nigerian version of the tale was around before colonization, or if it only came afterwards with the British? |
i wish there was a way to see hidden posts, heh |
it's from aesop's fables and has been adapted into various other contexts.
Interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_miller,_his_son_and_the_donkey |
The plot thickens |
Heh. At least they get to split the oil money among way fewer people. Nearly as much oil production as Nigeria, but a fraction of the people. It is well with Angola. |
i seriously did not know blackberry doesnt have touchscreen devices? ![]() http://marketday.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/30/10941667-blackberry-squeezed-rim-searches-for-options my goodness- in this day and age when everything is touchscreen?
They are really behind, it seems.. |
hehehe |
Haha the guy sounds like my cousin. My cousin grew up all his life in Lagos, can barely speak the language better than I can. It surprised the heck out of me at first. I guess it is "cool" among a certain set to only be seen speaking English. The TV at their house was typically tuned to MTV-E (MTV Europe iirc)...he seemed to know a lot more about what was going in European football leagues than in his country of birth and residence. |
I understand. There is a lot of culture and history buried in those old songs, since you understand spoken Yoruba, I'd suggest that you listen to some of those artists for the history lessons buried in the songs. If you understand Hausa or Igbo, listen to those old artists as well. It is unfortunate that historical records are not well protected in Nigeria - Nigerian history, taught in our schools contain too many lies and distortions.
Unfortunately we don't do a good job of recording our stories on paper. Rely too much on song and word of mouth to keep knowledge alive. Who knows how much will be lost as the primary custodians of our history (folks in their 80s and 90s) pass away? |
Darui: ^So, butHehe ![]() Nah, we left when I was a little kid...whatever I say here is based upon having spent less than 20% of my years in Nigeria. Regarding folktales, definitely. At some point when I have more time to read for pleasure, there are lots of things I'd like to learn about. |
