Man. This is going to be a nice three day stretch. Smack Nchara twice, then I get to smack Beaf too. Is it Christmas already, in April?  grin I'll be 4 and 0 against these asshats grin grin grin

Let us wait and see Beaf's response.

Beaf:
Lol. You embarrassed yourself the other time, you're just too dumb to realise it.
"Begging the question", I embarrassed myself? My dismantling of your statements is here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-650619.32.html#msg8168600
And is airtight. I guess you never got the chance to respond. Feel free to look at it now.

Please embarrass me now. Tell me how you pray to get Shell to pipe gas to your house! grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Wetin pesin no go hear for NL? I blame google!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
huh
Are you aware of Ota industrial estate? You live in Nigeria, right? You are aware that a pipeline runs through Ota, yes?
Politics › Re: Lagos Is Too Expensive For Diasporans And Even Oyinbo Sef by ektbear: 4:52am On Apr 26, 2011
@Big B1: Alright. I see. So I guess a few years in Lagos before Ota. Funny though, there was a man in my church involved in IT from Ogun or Oyo (I cannot remember which.) He did very well here, then jumped back to Nigeria in 2001 or so. And I know specifically he didn't return to do business in Lagos.

@Beaf: Am I going to have to embarrass you again? grin You did not learn your lesson from the "begging the question" incident? I suggest that you investigate how certain businesses in the Ota area are generating their electricity.
Politics › Re: Eko Ile, Lagos Is A Benin Town Not Yoruba by ektbear: 4:44am On Apr 26, 2011
tpiah!: Thanks a lot. The Wikipedia article is very good.

I don't think we lost too much territory to the Nupes, though.

There are two towns that represent part of the border between Yorubaland and Nupeland. Share is the Yoruba town, Tsaaragi is the Nupe one. Anyway, compare the map you posted to the following one from google:
https://i55.tinypic.com/29m85ls.png

As you can see, Share isn't very far from the Niger River. And the progression of time will Yorubaize all the non-Yoruba in Kwara. So in 100 years or so, whoever there isn't Yoruba will be Yoruba-speaking.
the original capital of the oyo empire was located in niger state.

there was a series of wars between the nupe and oyos, which eventually culminated in oyo's defeat and the sacking of the capital.

oyo regrouped further south, built a new capital and regained most of their old territory. They developed a calvary [with the help of the husa or fulani perhaps? Not sure], defeated the nupes, and proceeded to estblish a very lucrative part in the slave trade.

this went on until the fulani conquered northern nigeria and headed south as well.

internal wranglings [ilorin], and the revolt of egba and dahomey, among other things, seriously weakened oyo pending the arrival of the british.
Right. But didn't Oyo get defeated by the Nupes in like the 1400s? It was a long, long time ago. We haven't lost any territory to the Nupes since 1800, unless I am very much mistaken.

When was this Oyo/Nupe conflict?
you're confusing yourself.

ilorin emirate did not exist until the fulani conquest of ilorin.

prior to that, ilorin was under oyo.

there was a series of revolts, infighting and civil disturbances which culminated in ilorin breaking away from oyo and falling under the control of the fulani.
Yes, I know that. Anyway, see my text above. . . I thought you meant we lost territory to the Nupes more recently.

BTW, where was this original capital in Niger State? Are there ruins somewhere? Just curious. . . i'd like to visit it someday if so. And the capital that was sacked by Ilorin too. . . where is that?
Do you take lacal herbs?? agbo jidi?
no offence grin grin
No clue what you mean. The natural gas would be for a generator. Natural gas is a really cheap fuel source for electricity. I'd prefer using it as a fuel to say diesel or petrol.

Big B1:
It is not only about just you, think about your madam and kids (if you're married with kids) who you're bringing from a well structured environment
Do you love your family?
If your answer is yes, then you'll find a safe, civilized and friendly environment at least for the first 5 yrs returning back to this country.

Don't get me wrong, Ota is an OK area, but absolutely not for a JJC.
Alright. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks. BTW, what are the practical differences? Is it just safety? Schooling? Food? Entertainment? What can a JJC not find in Ota that they can find in Lagos?
Politics › Re: Eko Ile, Lagos Is A Benin Town Not Yoruba by ektbear: 4:18am On Apr 26, 2011
I think the confusion for you is that you assume Yoruba in the terminology of the 1800s= Yoruba in the terminology of today.

When they said Yoruba then, they meant Oyo Empire only. So yes, Oyo lost territory to the Ilorin Emirate. But in both states, the majority ethnic group was Yoruba.

Did Nupe Emirate ever defeat Ilorin Emirate in warfare? Jarus would probably know better, or another Kwara person.
Politics › Re: Eko Ile, Lagos Is A Benin Town Not Yoruba by ektbear: 4:15am On Apr 26, 2011
Which parts of Niger State?

Are you sure about that? Remember, Ilorin started out as a kingdom with a Yoruba leader. Civil war happened, Yoruba dude's faction lost and got defeated by Fulani guy's faction. How do you know that the territory of the Ilorin Emirate shrunk?

I don't think that happened.

There are some Yoruba folks in Nupe (I learned that this weekend), supposedly small towns and such. But they were captured slaves who were settled into towns. They don't represent a border shift.
Politics › Re: Eko Ile, Lagos Is A Benin Town Not Yoruba by ektbear: 4:10am On Apr 26, 2011
What of Kwara? Yorubaland basically borders Niger State to the North. Has Kwara State always been a Yorubaland? I had the impression that it was sort of a frontier territory in the 1700s.
Politics › Re: Arrest Me If You Can, Buhari Dares Jonathan <Misleading> by ektbear: 4:05am On Apr 26, 2011
Both sides are just escalating the situation unecessarily.

GEJ has no proof that Buhari is associated with the unrest.

Buhari knows that GEJ is too much of a chickensh1t to arrest him.

In a perfect world, GEJ would just deal with the unrest rather than shifting the blame to someone else. That way Buhari doesn't need to make any statements like, "arrest me if you can, you pvssy."
Politics › Re: Lagos Is Too Expensive For Diasporans And Even Oyinbo Sef by ektbear: 4:01am On Apr 26, 2011
What is wrong with Ota area? I can buy land relatively cheaply, build a nice big house, contact Shell and get them to pipeline natural gas to my house/business, and have 24/7 electricity using that NG.

That sounds like a good deal to me. If I want to go to Lagos to party, spend the weekends at a hotel or at a friend's place.
Politics › Re: Call Your Foot Soldiers In The North To Order Fani-kayode, Tells Buhari by ektbear: 3:55am On Apr 26, 2011
^-- God has blessed you with wisdom.

Basically, put up or shut up. If you have evidence linking him to the mayhem and that will stand up in a court of law, then arrest him and take him to court!

If you have no such evidence, then sit your @ss down and shut up.

All this innuendo and round-about techniques of trying to pin the mayhem on him are silly.

@EzeUche: I honestly don't care what other Yoruba (or Nigerians) think on this issue. It is a basic matter of principle. Innocent until proven guilty.
Politics › Re: Lagos Is Too Expensive For Diasporans And Even Oyinbo Sef by ektbear: 3:51am On Apr 26, 2011
Ideally I'd live somewhere cheaper like Ogun when I move back. Problem of course is finding a livelihood that doesn't require me to be based in Lagos. Hrm, we shall see.
Politics › Re: Arrest Me If You Can, Buhari Dares Jonathan <Misleading> by ektbear: 3:24am On Apr 26, 2011
This is kind of hilarious.

I guess Buhari realizes that GEJ doesn't have the stones to arrest him.
Politics › Re: Call Your Foot Soldiers In The North To Order Fani-kayode, Tells Buhari by ektbear: 3:17am On Apr 26, 2011
Buhari has already condemned the violence. If they don't listen to him, then they are clearly not under his control, and thus not his foot soldiers. What else is he supposed to do?

I dunno, those purported village empires did pretty well for themselves. Better to conquer than be conquered, at any rate.

I'm not at all sad that my kin spent their time expanding the borders of their territory:

Big B1:
I love Nigeria more than anything else, but I must confess that our system is designed for folks to steal (preferable government money).
Examples:
To rent a decent crib in Lekki for a year will cost you over N3m, in VI N5m and Ikoyi N6m (Don't let us talk about buying at this time)
Average monthly cost of diesel will be about N200k
Average quarterly cost of school fees N1.5m (if you have 4 or more kids, just simply jump off 3rd mainland bridge)
Weekend pocket money (bwt you, the kids and madam) about N250k or more
Average monthly money stolen from you by your drivers, gateman, houseboy, housegirl, electrician, generator engineer, mechanic and other invisible individuals, about N350k.
And other miscellaneous, about N200k.

I call it CRAZY NIGERIA.
The country is too expensive. I dunno how people cope. And you aren't getting much value for your money.

I saw a video this weekend (from a sports site I visit) of a white girl absolutely getting the sh1t beaten out of her by two black girls.

She was bleeding all over the place, having a seizure. . . they just kept coming back into the restaurant to beat her up. It was terrible

Man, sometimes black people depress the hell out of me. Always doing crazy n*gger sh1t

true but wat was she to do let him intimidate her? i think he more so was mad because a white chic punched him down
That is the most DANGEROUS part of it. If she is running away or backing away, then he won't hit her or mess with her too much. But the punch she threw damaged his pride. Embarrassed him in front of his friends. That is the most dangerous part of it. . . if you damage a man's pride he will do some dangerous-@ss things. That is why I am saying she is lucky it didn't happen at night.
Romance › Re: Man Gets Almost Knocked Out By Girl by ektbear: 2:29am On Apr 26, 2011
Did you see how quickly he got back up, though? If you are fighting someone bigger than you and put them down, you'd better finish them. Not let them get back up.

If she was smart she should have just run away from the situation rather than even swinging at him.

Imagine if this video scene had happened at night. And there was no video camera, and nobody witnessing it. That girl would have been in a lot of trouble once he got back up. . . face broken, ribs broken, and probably a lot worse. . . possibly raped
She is VERY lucky it didn't go much worse for her.

I dunno why he was picking on her though. And punching her back was kinda messed up. . . he is a stocky dude

His friend is a b1tch too for letting it progress to that level.
Politics › Re: Ribadu Set To Dump Acn For Cpc . by ektbear: 2:00am On Apr 26, 2011
revomind:
As for Ribadu joining the CPC, I think it would be a bad move. He can leave the ACN if he feels hard done but we should note that a candidate who couldn't even win his state was always gonna be a hard sell. People are rushing to cast aspersions on the party leadership without considering that this is *ng* and that Ribadu could as well have been paid off by Jonathan. The CPC brand is damaged here in the South justifiably or otherwise.
Two good points you raise.

1. CPC is a bad brand
2. Leaving the ACN on bad terms might reduce his effectiveness in the CPC, since the CPCs only path to Aso Rock is through an alliance with the ACN.

If he goes to the CPC, he'll have to get in line behind guys like El Rufai, Sanusi, etc.
