Another take here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444165804578008662614263532.html?mod=googlenews_wsj I actually like Mitt Romney, for the most part. His views align pretty closely to mine. But alas, against Obama...I have no choice but to root against him. |
So I'm sure you've heard already about this ancient text that supposedly quotes Jesus referencing his wife (see this if you aren't aware of it: http://www.chron.com/life/houston-belief/article/Five-big-questions-about-the-Jesus-wife-papyrus-3881424.php) So my question is, why aren't Christians in the US, Nigeria, Europe, South America, Asia etc rioting, protesting, murdering people, blowing up buildings and committing other acts of terrorism, etc? Shouldn't they be deeply offended? And if so, isn't violence a legitimate way to express displeasure? |
The plot thickens |
naijababe: If the senate is dissolved, wouldn't minorities become even more marginalised?! Would the legislature then be structured so that each state get equal representation ?Does the senate as present represent or protect the right of minorities? By the way, do you mean ETHNIC minorities or low-population states? |
Alj Harem: Then no matter what he says, you will condemn it. If he says, "The senate should remain", you will say it is because his wife is a senator. If he says, "The senate is redundant and should go", you will say his wife got the chance to benefit from it. So it seems to me that there is absolutely no answer he can give on this topic that will satisfy you. Doesn't that seem unfair? I get that you hate the man...but if you will disagree if he says YES and will also disagree if he says NO, then that suggests confusion on your part. |
naijababe: Look, let's call a spade a spade. It is sheer nepotism, is Lagos State that devoid of people that best that Lagos Central can put forward is Remi Tinubu?!Sure, let me even concede that it is nepotism. But...nepotism is a different sin from hypocrisy. And nepotism has nothing to do with whether his call for abolishment is wrong or right, does it? Why can't we discuss the issue on its own merits rather than making it again about Tinubu? If you like, pretend that it was some random person unconnected to politics at all who made this proposal. Do you agree with the proposal, or not? |
The heart of the matter is that many people don't like Tinubu. So unfortunately, every time he opens his mouth, rather than discussing what he said and its merits, people instead talk about why they don't like him. Even if he says 1+1=2, then people will disagree. For me, even if Satan says something, I will first check what he says before blindly disagreeing. Look, I don't like Tinubu very much myself and am starting to have pretty serious doubts about the ACN in general. But...this thread isn't about that. So it is probably best to start up another thread on that topic. |
Desola: I think you'll find that not many people disagreed with his call but most were looking into the real implementation of his suggestion.Well, I would argue that there is also a problem with the institution, in addition to the people. What purpose does having two legislatures serve? What value does the Senate deliver? If it doesn't deliver additional value, then it is a waste of funds, is it not? And if it wastes funds, then the institution is flawed, yes? |
alj harem: YesHow is it hypocritical? If you and I are playing a game of chess, and in the middle of the game I think that it would be better if the rules for the knight are different, can I immediately implement those rules before our game is finished? Tinubu is playing by the rules. That he thinks the rules should be changed doesn't mean he is a hypocrite. |
I don't get it. If you see a cockroach like fstranger cheering your fight on, and various partisans from the other side like ACM10 also cheering...shouldn't you stop, pause and say, "Hey, maybe I need to calm the fvck down! or perhaps this discussion needs to be moved to a private email conversation rather than NL." Cockroaches are only attracted to filth and chaos. So if one shows up in your thread and appears happy, then you are probably doing something wrong. Whether you like it or not, we are all on the same side. So rather than Desola tearing down Gbawe or Gbawe tearing down Desola, why not find another way? |
Anyway, back to the topic of the initial post...is Tinubu correct? In the US, the initial purpose of the senate was to serve as a counterbalance to the house of representatives. So that the voice of small states like Wyoming will not be overwhelmed by populous states like Illinois. Is this actually appropriate for a regionalistic sort of Nigeria? Probably not...the lines of tensions are not small, less populated states complaining about political domination from more populous ones. But more South vs. North, oil-producing states vs. non-oil producing, Igbos complaining about marginalization, various groups wanting true federalism, etc. So, are there other good reasons to have 2 legislatures? Reasons strong enough to outweigh the redundancy and increased cost? In my personal opinion, no. So, Tinubu is correct in making this call. |
Having skimmed through this thread, I still don't quite understand how the initial conversation degenerated like this. Desola and Gbawe: You are both posters I like and respect, and in my opinion your political disagreements can be discussed w/o devolving into the personal. I have a request for you both. Let's relax and calm down. At a minimum, let's keep the discussion focused squarely on the issues and relevant actors. So no more personal attacks...issues only. Can we agree to this? |
Katsumoto: Besides, sleeping on Sunday morning after a heavy duty Owambe must be better than packaging a bomb on Saturday night to maim and kill those going to church on Sunday morning.lol |
crayyyyyyy wth happened here |
The US is spending $1.5 billion/year, for a country 2X in population. So similar cost per capita. But labor is much cheaper in Nigeria than in the US....you'd expect to get each person measured at a lower cost (assuming that labor is the dominant factor in cost, which your links seem to suggest). So why the huge discrepancy? |
Right. Which is my point...I don't think that this Lagos hypothesis is very plausible for why we see so few folks from the north. |
Relax man...all of this vexing you are doing on NL can only increase your blood pressure. Drink a beer or smoke a blunt...it will calm your nerves ![]() |
Bawss1: What he said: "Lets work together." ![]() |
cray |
Troll? Me? Most sensible people wouldn't agree with that. And heck, if you think I'm a troll...I'm obviously doing a quite successful job if I've avoided being banned despite trolling for nearly 3 years ![]() Step up your game son, get on my level ![]() |
Man perhaps these people just need to light up a blunt or something, mellow out, calm the heck down. The French gov't needs to encourage marijuana consumption among their muslim population to prevent them from freaking out over minor things |
Am I a hater for wondering why amber rose got with wiz khalifa? Let alone let him impregnate her? Women have funny taste sha |
semid4lyfe: Shakira. . .that's some lady with beauty and brains.I think every guy has had a crush on her at one point or another...she is a good look |
Seun, I would suggest that you not abandon Adsense entirely. Do 1/2 and 1/2 or something, actually measure which one delivers more money to you. |
lalaosky: They can warn and rant all they want but one thing they cant do is to actually strap themselves with bomb and blow themselves up cos' heaven dont give 77virgins but ETERNAL LIFE in hell...Yep. Their best bet is to convert to islam...a religion that encourages violence, suicide bombing, etc. Only then will anyone take them seriously |
CHESSBOARD: hey hey dont go there, he ban more Ibos when he eventually take side.*shrug* More Igbos troll, do they not? If you want to be honest with yourself, then do a numerical count and compare. |
Oh...just FYI. In case it isn't clear, Seun almost certainly doesn't host Nairaland from Nigeria. Much cheaper to host abroad, and ssh/sftp in to do work...he probably uses Rackspace or the equivalent. I can of course spend more time fixing the mistakes and illogical reasoning in your post...but not clear a hard-headed person like you will benefit from this. |
Heh. If I am arrogant, i have pretty good reasons to be. You on the other hand have no choice but to be humble. |
One does not have to be a Nigerian or a northerner to observe certain facts. Who knows, perhaps there is a much better explanation that has absolutely nothing to do with society and culture. However, if there is a better explanation, you are not likely to be the source of it. Such insights aren't something you are capable of. Just idle trolling and cockroach-like behavior is all we have come to expect from you. |
This to me is the sort of breakthrough one might need to become a world power: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505263_162-57514837/richard-branson-on-space-travel-im-determined-to-start-a-population-on-mars Something on that level. Then again, perhaps there are other ways...this just seems the most obvious to me from observing the fortunes of those who colonized the Americas. Some sort of revolutionary scientific invention might also do the trick. |
Science...so beautiful. Like magic. |
