The Nation: Ogun not well-governed, says Obasanjo

Ogun not well-governed, says Obasanjo
================================================================================
Ernest Nwokolo on 06/03/2011 00:20:00

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday said, Ogun, his home state, should
be properly governed henceforth so that others can emulate her in future.
Obasanjo said given the abundant blessings coupled with the calibre of great
men, including himself that hail from the Gateway State, there must be no excuse
as to why it cannot be run well.
He said:” Whatever one believes must be done. Some are asking what does
Obasanjo wants? And I said nothing except that Ogun state should be run well, to
be an example out of the 36 states. There is no reason why Ogun should not be
run well.
“In this Abeokuta we are well blessed. This is the land four great men came.
They are Prof. Wole Soyinka, Kuti, Chief MKO Abiola and I. We are contemporaries
and each of us stands for what we believe in but we don’t see eye to eye.
Nepotism is not in any of us. We believe in justice and fairness.”
He spoke during his birthday eve variety show at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential
Library Amphitheatre where members of the Kegite Club International entertained
guests.
The former President urged people to cultivate the courage to do what is good
to uplift the country and society without expecting any commendation.
According to him, “if you expect the commendation of humans, you will be most
disappointed.”
He said people should take a cue from Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed who
despite their popularity and service to humanity were ill - treated by the same
people they helped.

PoliticsRe: Abacha's Son Is Cpc's Kano Governorship Candidate. by ekubear1: 9:07am On Mar 06, 2011
So roughly speaking, Abacha got denied in the PDP, moved over to the CPC, bribed/bought the primary using his probably hard-to-match finances, CPC tried to deny him, he took them to court and has their decision overturned?

So how is the CPC the villain here, lol?

Na wa o. Some people will hate for any reason

PhysicsMHD:
There isn't a pretext to ban him from competing in the primaries, but is it really the case that just any person can contest in a political party's primaries? If that was the case, then primaries would have 20 or 30 individuals. But they never do.
I don't know, tbh.

My point is that if some bigwigs of the CPC had something against him, his family name, or his past statements, as this story about Isa vs. Abacha suggests, then there was no reason for him to be allowed in the party in first place. That he was allowed to join, and then allowed to proceed with contesting, shows that some people in the CPC were on his side. I have a guess about who those people were.
He might have some in the CPC on his side, but he likely has some against him, too. Othewise I doubt that they'd have submitted the name of a guy he trounced in the primary as their candidate.
PoliticsRe: Abacha's Son Is Cpc's Kano Governorship Candidate. by ekubear1: 12:29am On Mar 06, 2011
PhysicsMHD:
They (the CPC) should never have allowed Mohammed Abacha to contest on the party's platform if they were averse to him being governor of Kano in the first place (as this story seems to suggest they were). He could just be expelled from the party (anti-party activity; not following the directives of the party leaders) if he decided to contest without their approval.

That he was able to join the party, and then able to contest on their platform shows that someone or some people in the CPC were fine with it and may have given him the go ahead earlier only for them to oppose him as candidate when he actually won (to their surprise, probably).
On what pretext would he banned from competing in the internal party primaries? Consider:
The judge upheld the primary election result in which Abacha scored 144,066 votes; Isa (78, 671); Sani Hangar (45,681) Anwalu Anwar (30,410) and Magaji Abdullahi (5,759).
Why would Abacha be banned from competing in the primaries, but Isa, Hangar, Anwar, and Abdullahi permitted to compete?

bk.babe97y:
Yeah, but my view is that, like Animal Farm, Nigeria is being run by a cabal that are no different from the one they fought out of power! Indeed, in Nigeria's case, they chased themselves "Out into" Power! Get it?

They all pretend they chased the military out, but in reality, all they did was discard the Military Uniform for civilian clothing; just like the pigs.
This in a nutshell is why the Animal Farm analogy is so apt.

Don't you think the bolded is contradictory?? Since you've spent your entire life in the U.S what gives you the confident impression on the way Nigeria practices christianity?
A fair point. So to fully discloses my background, I've lived here for a little over 21 years now. But for the last 12 years or so, have been attending mostly African churches (with the RCCG being the major one I've attended.)

So I feel that this qualifies me to talk about both styles.

Let's not blame low iq. . . just lack of creativity and imagination. And how many Nigerians read world-class newspapers like the NY Times, where analogies and parallels like this are par for the course?
PoliticsRe: Abacha's Son Is Cpc's Kano Governorship Candidate. by ekubear1: 12:07am On Mar 06, 2011

PoliticsRe: Abacha's Son Is Cpc's Kano Governorship Candidate. by ekubear1: 11:54pm On Mar 05, 2011
^-- Why are you refusing to answer the simple question?

Again. . . what would you have done if you had full control of the CPC? Would you ban Mo Abacha from joining your party? If so, why? If not, why?

Keep in mind that as much as the family is disliked in southern Nigeria, Mohammed has no legal issues hanging over him.
PoliticsRe: Is This For Real? by ekubear1: 11:48pm On Mar 05, 2011
You are basing your conclusions on some youtube videos, when some of us have spent nearly our entire lives here huh

Look, I have no clue why you keep trying to equate the way Christianity is practiced in Nigeria with the way it is practiced in the US. Two very different cultures, which different origins, backgrounds, etc.

@eku bear,
r u daft or u're just pretending 2 be? Is the CPC an all comers affair? A party that was midwifed by a self acclaimed Puritan ought 2 b able to set its standards and decide the calibre of ppl 2 have in its fold. Last i checked there were over 50 parties in the country and Abacha was free to join any yet he chose the CPC and was accepted with open arms - perharps the stolen Benjamins in Switzerland were too much to resist. Abacha is only popular in Kano becos of his philantropy, well who wouldnt be considering that his dad made Forbes top 10 by theft. Little wonder the Almajiris have taken to him!
So in other words, the CPC should have refused to permit Abacha Jr. to join the party, yes? Is this your suggestion?

The white American church you spent your early years at could as well be an exception!! The crowds at the Benny Hinn crusades are they Nigerians??
And who said Miracles dominate the daily lives of Nigerians?? People usually seek miracles when a solution is beyond reach! As such it is natural for more Africans to seek miracles because they have a greater number of situations where solutions are beyond reach! Americans with unsolvable problems do seek miracles same as Nigerians with unsolvable problems.
Benny Hinn and pastors like that likely have under 5% of the churchgoing population in the US. The equivalent pastors in Nigeria might have 80 or 90% of the churchgoing population.

Again, I'm not sure your hypothesis is supported. Westerners don't view the church as a universal cure-all, as many Nigerians do.

@eku bear
The point is a candidate that has been selling like crazee 2 ignorant folks by climbing a moral highground on every issue and prides himself on the anti corruption stance of himself and his party ought not to have a name synonymous with criminality in its fold esp when his voiceferous online Mob are castigating his opponent for the crimes of distant and sidelined party members. This isnt abt what the people of Kano think, its about Ngrns realizing the CPC is no association of Saints which is the erroneous reason naive folks r being enticed by the BB ticket.
Sani Abacha is likely provably a criminal. Mohammed probably is not (otherwise he'd be rotting in jail.)

He is only a "sinner" in the minds of southern nigerians. While he is a "saint" in that of the people of Kano.

So Buhari should kick out the candidate that the people of Kano want, because the guy isn't popular in the South?

Or he should instead have his party run a governorship candidate in Kano who is disliked by the people of Kano, but popular in the South?  grin grin grin

Sounds a bit moronic, no?

3) To those saying poverty and the rest are responsible for this, I think you are just narrowminded and seeking an identity! America, which is and has been the richest and most advanced country in the world is still the epicenter of these kinds of gatherings!!
A pewresearch report confirmed that that 80% of Americans believe in miracles!!
You can check it out on the link!

That report doesn't support your hypothesis. Americans might believe in miracles, but it doesn't dominate their daily life or even just spiritual lives. Most of my early years were spent in a white American church. Their approach to religion is quite different. Less focused on the supernatural.

Ive read on all the aspirants and the only sane vote should be to Gen.Buhari. He has shown his hands at least three times, why cant Nigerians fuxcking see this?He had the chance to become a billionaire, probably, 5 times over in more than 30yrs but this man chose integrity and love of mother-land over anything else! Rumors have been spread about him being a religious fanatic; he has repeatedly refuted them. His household---even is wife---- is said to include christians, he chose a christian as running mate; A FREAKING PREACHER, what more is he supposed to do to show that he is not a religious fanatic as being falsely spread?! Maybe he needs to appeal to God to send down Jesus to campaign on his behalf!!!

He abhors corruption, he has shown he wont bow down to the west if it means his people will be trampled upon. What more do Nigerians want?!
Nigerians are religious and ethnic bigots. Many southern Nigerians will never vote for Buhari in 1 million years, because he is a Muslim Fulani.

Mr. Ribadu is another terrible choice. He cavorts with the same criminals supporting GEJ. Gen.Obasanjo is his puppeteer; he'll never prosecute him. GEJ pardoned him; will he ever prosecute him? His sponsor is a known major drug dealer, is he going to send him off to jail? For these reasons I believe he's just a pawn and he doesnt know it. GEJ, OBJ and co brought him back to Africa in order to split the votes in the North while I believe Mr.Bola Tinubu is using him in the same capacity---- and also to use him as a bargaining chip with Gen.Buhari since this election might very well be settled via a Run-Off.
Hrm. You raise some good points regarding Ribadu. Though I must point out that Tinubu isn't/wasn't a drug dealer. Money launderer of drug money, yes. I agree with your analysis in bold. Honestly, the relationship between the Ribadu, OBJ, Tinubu, and GEJ is murky. Since Tinubu absolutely hates OBJ, I'm assuming that most of Ribadu's connections to OBJ and GEJ have diminished. But I'm not sure exactly.

Lol. That video was personally very embarrassing.

With that said, miracles supposedly do really happen. . . least this is what my parents have told me.

I've never seen any happen with my own eyes, though.

Hrm. . . Western culture is less prone to mysticism and supernatural explanations for things. Nigerian culture, part of daily life (Heck, less the 200 years ago, most southern nigerians were still pagans). Hence the difference in the way Christianity is practiced in both places, I guess.
