Moneysage:

I would have loved to advise newbies to study GOOD books about investment before they start trading, but the truth is that those books only build one's confidence and grasp of the market; they don't guarantee that ALL your investment decisions will be right.

Two pieces of advice I have for newbies, which have been said by other ogas on here, are these:

1. Don't invest money when you don't know ANYTHING about the stocks you want to buy. It's sad to see newbies say: "I have N200000, please advise me on what stocks to buy."

2. ONLY those who are in charge of ANY company have an idea of the potentials (profit or loss) of such company. You may read analyst reports, comments by experienced traders, financial sheets etc and think you're making the right choice...But still get your fingers burnt cos there's always MORE THAN YOU KNOW about any stock. You are only a COMMON/ORDINARY shareholder.
People wey Oando don show pepper go understand the 2nd point well. grin

Thank you my oga for this advice. In addition, don't risk money you can't afford to lose. Unfortunately, some of my ogas here do not agree with me on this but it remains the truth. If you can't afford to lose then the stock market is not for you. Try Treasury Bills or better still contact Feelamong.

For those that trade banking stocks, there is need to expect less in terms of dividends especially when the coy is planning to raise money at a period close to year end. Remember there is a new CBN policy which restricts unhealthy banks (cash-wise) from paying dividends. FBNH could have paid more than 10 kobo but their hands were tied and they decided to spice it up with bonus (unattractive). Banks are likely to cut their dividend pay-outs in the future in order to meet the minimum CAR requirement by CBN. This is already evident in 2014 FY corporate actions where even the SIBs could not pay significantly higher dividends compared to previous year. Less pray we don't start seeing the inevitable share reconstruction too soon in this sector.

The bold is actually not true (in all cases). We need to properly understand dividend dates so as not to miss out on dividend after purchasing a stock for dividend purpose. I noticed that in Naija, the date of closure is assumed to be the ex-dividend date by most coys. Ex-dividend date is actually the date on or after which a stock trades ex-dividend (without dividend). In the NSE, this date is rarely indicated in coys financial reports. Only few (sincere) companies will mention it clearly in their reports. If you're buying a stock for dividend purpose you must put settlement date into consideration (the date on which the transaction gets completed). Remember if you buy a stock, the T+3 trading rule says you must allow 3 business days for the transaction to be finalized (this is when you become the official owner of the stock). The bottom line is, if the closure date is 30th, you have to buy the stock on or before 27th to officially qualify for dividends. However, some companies may allow investors who bought a day or two before the closure date to qualify (but this must be clearly stated in their reports). It is better to use dates in the company's report to check for divided qualification. Some of the dates published on NSE website are misleading. Companies that want to be transparent will use a date range as closure date to be published on the NSE website (e.g 1st – 5th). This is my own understanding of dividend dates.

Case in point of a situation where you can buy before the closure date (published on the NSE website) and still not get dividend: an extract from Nestle's Corporate action:

"The final dividend per share is payable on the issued share capital of 792,656,252 (2013:792,656,252) ordinary shares of 50k each held by each member of the Company registered in the books as at close of business on Friday, 24 April 2015".
http://www.nse.com.ng/Financial_NewsDocs/8595_NESTLE_NIG_2015_CORPORATE_ACTION_CORPORATE_ACTIONS_FEBRUARY_2015.pdf

...meanwhile the published closure date on NSE website is 27th April 2015. An investor who buys the stock on 25th, 26th or 27th will be inelligible for dividend.

You seem to have been missing in action for a while in this forum grin

I can even understand dividends, it gives me an opportunity to get some of my money back to meet other needs besides the feel good factor. As for bonuses, it just favours the company because more investors and speculators might be tempted to buy more at lower values.

My oga na election things jare...

The bonus issue can be very good too especially if you are in for long term. Accumulating bonuses and dividends over the years will get you your invested capital back in a short time.

@House - CCNN dividend of 35k is it a good omen or not?

It's a 50% cut from their FY'13 declared dividend which was 70k. I wanted to buy for short term dividend rally but opted out when I saw 35k on their report grin. The decision is yours.

Seriously, I agree with you but, I am only trying to guess what the board has in mind like everyone else. What is the implication of this statement from that podcast:

We intend to effectively manage dividend pay-out and increase retention as a means of capital management, given so many factors i.e. lack of debt in market, liquidity in the market - FBNH GM

You may not be far from the truth. They've given a clear indication that we should not expect a bumper dividend. They may approve a meager dividend and use bonus of 1 for 20 to appease the gods grin

I have never really understood the theory of bonuses besides the feel good factor which you get by having more units. I would rather have less units as long as the value is the same as twice that number. Anyone care to school me a bit?

You are right. Not all bonuses are good deals. Sometimes it pays more to take advantage of capital appreciation from the dividend rally and forget the bonus. If a company declares dividend and bonus and I'm in for short/mid term, I usually wait until a day before closure date (when the stock will be marked down for bonus and dividend) to see how much I can gain on capital appreciation. After a guesstimate of the possible mark down price and a consideration on the strength of the coy to go back to its previous trading price, I make my decision to sell or hold.

FBNH is one of the most watched stocks right now. Good news will send it 10% up easily and a bad one 10% down easily. We already know that the performance from Q3 is good. The question is what corporate action will be taken on FBNH. This is because of the effect of new policies on the bank. I expect FBNH to give a good bonus even if the dividend is not up to N1.

Bonus ke? Join their current OS? Maybe 1 for 20. I will be surprised if they give 1 for 10.

How dividend payment works by Ugodre Obi-Chukwu
If you purchased shares of a company after the register is closed (ex-div date) you will not receive dividends. The ex-div date is the cut-off date for payment of dividend and also the date upon which the share price trades less the amount of dividend per share that will be paid. As such, when a company declares dividends it usually accompanies such announcement with a date for closure of register. Therefore, the shareholders that will get dividends are those whose names appear on the register on or before the date of closure of register. If you purchase shares after the register is closed (ex-div) you will not be paid dividends for that period.

Can you use an example?

For example, a company can announce proposed dividend on February 13 2014, closure of register for March 14 2014 and pay dividends April 4th 2014. Those who bought or own shares in the company on or before March 14th 2014 will qualify for dividends. Therefore if you buy shares in the company after March 14, you will not qualify for that dividend. The period between March 14th and April 4th is the ex-div period as such March 14th is when the share price will be “marked down”.

Buhari flying the APC flag. We know politicians are very desperate people. And now we have Buhari flying the flag of a bigger platform than CPC. When he lost in 2011, we know what happened. Imagine him losing this time(I am not saying PDP will win or APC will win).

Only traders will like FBN share buyback but majority holders of FBN shares are long term investors who seriously believe in them.....Why do you think I am buying more FBN shares than the rest....Because I believe in their stock and share buy back to them will affect principle of FBN as it can create manipulative loophole...Their stock is not doing bad but responding to market realities beyond the control of FBN and I guess the right thing to do is to weather the storm.....Share buy back does not fit their stock.....I am planning to mop up to 2 Million units and I can't try that with most stocks listed on NSE.........

@angelo, share buyback is as beneficial to the company itself as it is to the shareholders. Companies may use market downturn as an opportunity to buy back some of thier shares which will create an incentive for investors to have more confidence in them. Whether the buyback is for manipulative reasons or not, at least, making such announcement shows the company believes the stock is cheap. How does buyback affect the principle of FBN shares? Maybe they are waiting for it to get to 50 kobo before they buy as suggested by @carpenter. But I think Nigerian companies are scared of buying back their shares, even if the stocks get to 0.50

@All, those that are moping up banking stocks for long term should consider imminent share reconstruction in this sector. Some share reconstructions can be very beneficial (e.g. Stanbic) while some can be detrimental to investment portfolio (e.g ETI). This is not to scare anyone but to create awareness / reminder.

Note: I will be buying one or more banking stocks.
