we are definitely not more complex than India, but India practices exactly what we do here. They have an affirmative action that canvases equal or certain % representation in times of central and state government appointments, education and others. I usually do think every appointment should be strictly base on merit. But over time I came to realise that such is not tenable in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country such as ours. We have to learn to live with such agitation for now until we attain such level of mind development to overcome parochial sentiments. The only factor making PDP appears unbeatable is simply it's all inclusiveness. If other parties can adopt such, maybe then we could have a true opposition.

the party pick some Christians as members of the then Interim
National Excecutive Committee which was later chairman by Chief
Bisi Akande. But they ignored him. They merely made him an ex-

Again when the convention was approaching, he ran to these

Christians from the North, they ignored him. "I told them having
many Christians from the North would be a proof that our party is

National Chairman of APC, John Odigie -Oyegun to pay a courtesy
call on Cardinal John Onaiyekan in Abuja and they were now
asking this party officer to follow them being the only Christian
officer of the party from the North.
According to an eye witness, the man said, "I would not follow you.
When I was asking you to let us have more Christians from the
North in the National Working Committee (NWC) you people
refused and you almost stopped me too. I am not going" The man
did not.
I am telling you this to let you know the war genuine Christians in
politics are facing. If you are not called to go there by God, steer
clear of politics otherwise, they mess you up! Those who want to

The committee carried out its assignment between 6:45PM and

The palace of Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar has now admitted that the
Sultan made a mistake by announcing the end of Ramadan based
on claims by some Nigerian Muslims that they sighted the new
moon of Shawwal on Saturday night.
The result of the joint moonsighting exercise undertaken by the
Sultanate Moon Sighting Committee and the Nigerian National
Moonsighting Committee on Sunday clearly showed that the
monarch erred in the pronouncement he made on Saturday
prematurely terminating the Ramadan fast in Nigeria.
The Sultan, who is also the President of the Nigerian Supreme
Council for Islamic Affairs [NSCIA], commissioned the joint
moonsighting investigation after his Saturday call triggered
controversy, with some of the nation’s foremost clerics as well as
the Secretary General of the NSCIA, Is-haq Oloyede, openly
questioning his judgment.
The result of the investigation, also endorsed by the Sultan’s
representatives, was unambiguous: The claim that the moon was
sighted on Saturday was questionable as it was impossible for
anyone to see the moon anywhere in the world at that time.
The committee carried out its assignment between 6:45PM and
7:45PM on Sunday.
The report of the joint committee, compiled by Usman Mahmud, a
research officer with the National Moon Sighting Committee, reads
in part:
“I write to inform you that we (the National Moon Sighting
Committee) and the Sultanate Moon Sighting Committee went to the
Sighting of Moon today (Sunday, July 27, 2014).
“The moon was not sighted with naked eye or with telescope and
binocular. However, we used some programmes and software
applications like Skymap, Stellarium and Virtual Moon to get the
details of the moon.
“The details of the Moon are: Age: 19H (hour) 05M(minutes); Hour
Angle/DE:04H 45M 11S(seconds)/ +12 21’11′; Distance between
sun and moon: 3.5′.”
Experts say the result of the investigation suggested that the Sultan
erred by declaring the end of Ramadan and beginning of Shawwal
even when a new moon had not been born.
“It was a big error,” said Sheikh Abdulrazaq Ishola, a member of the
Moonsighting Committee Worldwide, who himself was at the
AlBayrouny Observatory in Mecca that Saturday in search of the
moon. “The (Sultan’s) announcement embarrassed Nigeria all over
the world because in no other place was such ridiculous claim of
sighting the moon on Saturday made.
“How can anyone claim that he saw the moon even when
conjunction of the moon and the sun had just taken place? That is
impossible. In any case, where should we ask people to find a moon
that had not been born?”
Mr. Ishola explained that after conjunction takes place, (which he
said occurred at 11:47 PM on Saturday), it usually takes about 17
hours for the moon to be sighted with a telescope and between 18
and 23 hours to be visible to the naked eye.
“What happened in Nigeria is disrespect to Islam and Muslims,” the
cleric, who is also a a member of the Abu Dhabi-based Islamic
Crescent Observatory Project, said. “We are in the 21st century, yet
we are still living in the past in Nigeria.”
Sultan Abubakar had around midnight on Saturday announced the
sighting of the new moon and therefore the end of Ramadan,
making Nigeria the only country in the world which celebrated Eid
on Sunday.
“The new month of Shawwal was sighted in different places within
Nigeria and therefore tomorrow (Sunday) is the first day of Shawwal
equivalent to 27 July 2014,” the Sultan said in an announcement
aired on the Nigerian Television Authority [NTA].
But when contacted after the Sultan’s announcement, the Secretary-
General of the organisation, Is-haq Oloyede, a professor of Islamic
Studies, told PREMIUM TIMES he was not aware the moon had been
sighted.
“I spoke to the Sultan about four times tonight (Saturday) and he
did not tell me that the moon has been sighted,” Mr. Oloyede told
PREMIUM TIMES. “In any case, any such claim is ridiculous and
unscientific. It cannot be right.
“The National Moon-Sighting Committee has not informed us of any
credible sighting of the moon. Rather, they said the moon wasn’t
sighted. The new moon was only born at 11:45 P.M. tonight
(Saturday) and it will take several hours for it to be sighted.
“Is our own sky different? Is our own moon manufactured in
Nigeria?” he said.

The Deputy Minority Leader, House of Represenatatives, Hon. Kawu Sumaila (APC, Kano), has alleged that the recent scathing remarks against the former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), by the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Mujahid Abubakar Dokubo-Asari, has the blessing and tacit support of President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to Kawu in a statement in Abuja yesterday, Dokubo-Asari alleged that Buhari was responsible for the twin bomb blast that targeted him and the Islamic cleric, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi in Kaduna.

He noted that it had become habitual for Dokubo-Asari to level allegations against top northern leaders and even denigrate them listlessly.

"For two years, Dokubo-Asari has been singing war songs, pouring venoms on everyone else who disagreed with the Goodluck Jonathan government," Sumaila said in the statement yesterday.

He asserted that "Dokubo-Asari has been speaking the mind of Goodluck Jonathan and in most cases he spoke on his behalf and at his behest," asking : "Why is it Jonathan's knowing that Dokubo-Asari is his kinsman, an Ijaw from the Niger Delta like him, continue to pour venom on a people and their leaders without calling him to order?"

He further indicated that "the president again and again does not give a damn about all the things the ex-militant leader has been doing."

Doubting Dokubo-Asari’s profession of Islamic faith, the legislator wondered whether "Mr. President thinks Dokubo-Asari is helping him by insulting others?," a situation he says is a drawback against the "president and his government.

"Dokubo-Asari, by his utterances, attitudes arrogance and actions does not in any way portray himself as a true Muslim who loves peace," he said.

Instead, he said, Dokubo-Asari used the name of Islam for selfish ends, commited all manner of atrocities, and had penchant; all of which he said are un-Islamic "because the Holy prophet said anyone who preaches violence is not with us."

He observed that: "Ordinarily, characters like Dokubo-Asari should be cooling their heads in jail for the many sins they have committed against the Nigerian state but today they are not only walking as free men, but they are accorded with state protection and cover by the Jonathan's administration."

Giving an example of the October 1 Independence day bombing in Abuja in which President Jonathan tried to extricate his kinsmen while courts in both Nigeria and South Africa, Sumaila insisted that "the circumstances surrounding the twin Kaduna bombings and many others give room for suspicion of some other unseen hands in it other than what we are being told on daily basis by the federal government and its security agencies."

He cautioned Dokubo-Asari and his likes "that nobody has the monopoly of violence" and that his threats of violence in defence of Jonathan "is enough and we won't tolerate this again."

He urged President Jonathan "to, in his own interest, call Dokubo-Asari to order," while admonishing security agencies to investigate the militant leader and charge him to court for inciting the public.

Following a bomb explosion apparently targeting a Sallah event at the Trade Fair Complex next to Ado Bayero Shopping Mall, the management of the mall has decided to close the premises for the rest of today, July 28, 2014 in the interest of public safety.
The management of the mall said events are being closely monitored to avert any further occurrence.
“The situation is being monitored closely and further announcements will be made as deemed necessary.
We thank the public and the people of Kano for their patience and understanding,” the management said.

Africans who were demonstrating in Africa, in solidarity with their
Ghanaian family, there is nothing subversive about their actions.

to understand the true concept of African unity, hence the reason for
