The Accra Police command has arrested two Nigerians who joined Thursday's demonstration in Accra. The police say the demonstration was meant for Ghanaians and Ghanaians alone. "It was not for other nationals to join," Joseph Obenefo Darkwa of the police CID told Joy News. The two held the Nigerian flag side-by-side right in the belly of the demonstrators, singing their own songs and chanting. One of them told Myjoyonline.com right in the middle of the demonstration that: "We are comrades from Nigeria. We are protesting fuel prices hikes. We have undergone similar things in Nigeria around January. We believe in a united Africa. Nigeria and Ghanaians we are brothers. Whatever affects Ghanaians affect Nigerians. So we are here in solidarity with Ghana." But it appears the police are not convinced by his explanation, however innocent it sounded. Joseph Obenefo Darkwa said the conduct of the two was "offensive." Ahead of the Thursday's demonstration security expert at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Centre Dr Kwasi Aning had hinted of the possibility of the demonstration being infiltrated by fifth columnist or elements to foment trouble. It is however too soon to conclude the two arrested Nigerian have any such ulterior motives Joseph Obenefo Darkwa said the police have begun profiling the two gentlemen and are investigating their conduct. Meanwhile, the police say the demonstration was highly successful. Police Public Affairs Director DSP Cephas Arthur said they were professional in the dealings with the demonstrators, but was quick to express his disappointment with the decision by the demonstrators to abort an initial plan to converge at the Hearts park and instead chose the Independence Square. mobile.ghanaweb.com/wap/article.php?ID=318443 |

How I wish all these BH attack are targeted at mostly politicians instead of innocent ordinary Nigerians. If it were the case probably this menace would have long ended. But as long as these rag tag group keep snuffing life out of ordinary people, leaving the politicians to keep on with their kleptomaniac tendencies, we will have a long way with this issue. |

Members of the civilian JTF in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital have arrested 5 members of the Boko Haram insurgents who came into Damboa to board vehicle at the Kano motor park (Tashan Kano). DailyPost gathered that the suspects were fleeing to Lagos, following stories that the military was ready to reclaim Damboa town. A member of the JTF, Ahamadu Mamman told DailyPost that, some of the members of the Boko Haram sect who were fleeing Damboa town were being arrested by their members at motor parks within Maiduguri. “We arrested 5 yesterday at Tashan Kano. I think 4 were killed and one of them who is alive is giving the soldiers information. We have stationed our boys at Tashan Journey and all the local spots where vehicles pick passengers, even along the roads and we have been succeeding,” Mamman said. According to him, since the Boko Haram attacked Damboa and displace the people, it is obvious that war is imminent and some of them who don’t want to be caught up are seriously leaving the area. He said, most of them who were arrested in Maiduguri and environs were all heading to the south west. “Almost all of them said, their destination was Lagos when we arrest them.” dailypost.ng/2014/07/24/boko-haram-flees-damboa-head-lagos/

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini was delighted with Kelechi Iheanacho after the Nigerian scored in victory over Sporting Kansas City. City beat a host of European clubs to sign Iheanacho after he scored six goals in seven games to claim the Golden Ball at last summer’s Under 17 World Championship. Kelechi Iheanacho Pellegrini said: “Kelechi is just 17 years old and he’s a very important player for us in the future. He demonstrated today what he can do in the future. It depends on the way he takes this profession, but I think he’s a good talent. “We’ve not decided yet (what the plan is for him) because it’s not easy. He’s just 17 and sometimes that’s the problem. We’ll see what he will do in the future. For the moment he will stay with us and we’ll see when we return to England what will happen with him. But he’s a very important player for the future for the club. “After the tour we will see what happens with him. There are a lot of things to arrange to play in England but he has an important future.” www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/iheanacho-exceptional-pellegrini/

The former leader says terrorism is not based on religion or ethnicity Former Head of State, and leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, has given more insight into how he managed to escape Wednesday’s bomb attack in Kaduna that targeted him. Speaking to Governor Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State who visited him Thursday, Mr. Buhari said despite being close to the centre of a huge blast that police say killed at least 15 people, he suffered no “scratch” although he had bloodstain. The attack occurred near the busy Kawo market in Kaduna. A bomb-laden car rammed into the ex-leader’s convoy after trailing it for a distance, and unsuccessfully trying to overtake the escort vehicle to reach Mr. Buhari’s armoured SUV. “When I came out of the car, there was blood on my dress, I don’t know how it came about because I don’t have even a single scratch myself,” he said. “I saw dead bodies thrown all over the place. The security tried to move me to the other side because they were thinking maybe there is a another bomb and we just got one of the vehicles passing which picked me and brought me back home.” Some reports say as much as 50 died in the attack. Addressing Mr. Yero, the APC leader said the insurgency ravaging Nigeria is neither caused by religion nor ethnicity. “This killings is neither ethnic nor religious,” he said. “So when they kill children in schools in the North East, when they kill students teachers, when they bomb churches, when they bomb mosque, when they the bomb motor park, when they bomb the market, where is religion there, where is ethnicity? This is terrorism and I hope the government will come to grip with it.” Mr. Buhari said Nigeria can overcome terrorism. “Nigeria is capable of dealing with this. We have dealt with a war scene in a civil war. For 30 months, we fought and we kept Nigeria one and God willing. We are going to keep Nigeria one,” he said. “I hope that both the law enforcement agencies and you the chief executives of the state (referring to Governor Yero) will succeed in bringing lasting peace and security throughout the country and may God help us,” the former head of state said. Governor Yero said the bomb attacks will not happen again. “Unfortunately, because of the crowded town that we had yesterday, this things happened. We know that, by the grace of God, this thing will never happen again. We continue to do our best and to also continue to pray to almighty Allah. We are grateful to God for what he has done to us,” he said. “This is very unfortunate and it is not supposed to be so, so we totally condemn this act and will like to also call on people to condemn it and at the same time to look around and ensure what is always around which the people of Kaduna state have always been.” m.premiumtimesng.com/news/165522-buhari-says-he-suffered-no-scratch-in-kaduna-bombing.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=buhari-says-he-suffered-no-scratch-in-kaduna-bombing

egift: The gossip and propaganda against #BringBackOurGirls continues. If they were all fight and entertaining the Journalist, where are the pictures?Referring to a group sponsor by the government to counter the bring back our girls movement. |
The allegation that a group of protesters demanding the return of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls are being sponsored may have been confirmed yesterday as some of its members after gathering in Abuja yesterday, engaged in a free-for-all over money they were promised for participating in the protest. The group, all youths, clad in white T-shirts as against the red T-shirts of the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) protesters also gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to mark the 100 days of the abduction of the girls. The group, however, gathered before the 3p.m. schedule of the planned sit-out by the BBOG, with T-shirts and banners with the inscriptions “Boko Haram, Return Our Girls Now.” At the end of the meeting, THISDAY observed that some of them were fighting and struggling among themselves, complaining that someone had absconded with the money meant for them to share. THISDAY also gathered that the group enjoyed a live coverage from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as the crew were observed packing their equipment and Mikano generator used for the live transmission. The NTA crew however did not cover the BBOG group even though it already started proceedings to mark the 100 days. It was also gathered that the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ms. Jumoke Akinjide, addressed the group in white shirts. This indicated government’s backing, to draw attention away from the Dr. Oby Ezekwesili’s group. Meanwhile the BBOG group marking the 100 day of the abduction of the Chibok girls, lamented that no concrete result had been achieved. Assembled at a sit-out in Abuja, the protesters called for more concerted efforts to ensure the safe release of the girls from the hands of their abductors, the Boko Haram sect. The former Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, while addressing journalists on the sidelines of the sit-out at the Unity Fountain, said the group did not expect that the girls would still be in captivity till now. Speaking on the Tuesday meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the parents of the abducted girls, Ezekwesili said it was an important one. “...From when it happened, we had expected that there should have been an outreach to the parents; that did not happen, but let bygones be bygones,” she said. The former minister however noted that the outcome of the meeting would be measured by results, which would mean the safe rescue of the girls. Ezekwesili added that although terrorism was a global challenge, all countries collaborating on the rescue of the Chibok girls are looking to the Nigerian government to provide the needed leadership towards getting results. She also insisted that the #BringBackOurGirls group which had sat out consistently for 86 days now, would not relent until the girls are rescued. “The protest is as effective as it can be. We do not control the apparatus that makes a country secure. We are the voice of the girls, in order to compel the appropriate actions to be taken. The end action is to compel the entity that holds the power to act, to act,” she added. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/chibok-rented-crowd-fights-over-money/184395/

atlwireles: The World Bank, using the International Labour Organisation (ILO), definition, stated that “unemployment rate in Nigeria, according to a usual ILO definition, is likely lower than 10 per cent.My thoughts exactly. I always believed we have more of under-employment issues in this country than unemployment. |
BuddahMonk: Which of your South West?world bank statistic are shallow and faulty now...lolzz |
NWANICHODE: I donblive it since there is no job for our youthA percentage of youth employment issues are mostly cases of under-employment rather than out-right unemployment. Some simply want better jobs. |
I actually have never accepted the concept that 80% of Nigerians live below $1 a day. It just doesn't add up with the general economic trend in the country. wonderful news today!!! |
Predicts 7.4% growth in 2014 James Emejo The World Bank Tuesday said there had been positive economic trend as well as significant progress made towards poverty eradication in the country. It said in its second edition of the Nigeria Economic Report (NER) which was launched in Abuja that going by the recent rebasing of the economy as well as analysis from the new General Household Surveys (GHS) conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) with the support of the Bank, new poverty estimates in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 should be within the range of 35.2 per cent and 33.1 per cent respectively. Although the previous NBS Harmonised Nigeria Living Standards Survey (HNLSS) 2009/2010, which took a larger study sample into account had estimated poverty rate at 62.6 percent, the Breton woods institution said it had strong reasons to believe that "consumption was seriously underestimated in the large HNLSS household survey in 2009/2010." It stated that an analysis of a panel survey data (GHS) of 5000 households for 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 provided "evidence that consumption is likely higher than previously estimated from the HNLSS survey." Furthermore, the new GHS analysis put rural poverty at 46.3 per cent and 44.9 per cent in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 respectively compared to 69.1 per cent and 51.2 per cent respectively in the HNLSS 2009/2010 estimates by the NBS. The World Bank estimates further suggested that the number of poor Nigerians remained at 58 million adding that more than half of the figure are located in the North- east or North- west. Specifically, it noted:" Poverty rates range from 16 per cent in the South- West to 52 per cent in the North-East. While the South and North central experienced declines in the poverty rate between 2010/2011 and 2012/2013, the poverty rate increased almost unchanged in the North West."
