Lest We Should Be The Last - Kwesi Brew

Lest we should be the last

To appear before you

We left our corn in the barn

And unprepared we followed

The winding way to our hut

Our children begged for water

From the woman bearing golden gourds

On their heads

And laughing on their way from the well

But we did not stop,

Knowing that in your presence

Our hunger would be banished

And our thirst assuaged

By the flowing milk of our words

Now we have come to you

And are amazed to find

Those you have loved and respected

Mock you to your face

The Excecutioner's Dream - Kwesi Brew

I dreamt I saw an eye, a pretty eye,

In your hands,

Glittering, wet and sickening;

Like a dull onyx set in a crown of throns,

I did not know you were dead

when you dropped it in my lap.

what horrors of human sacrifice

Have you seen, executioner?

What agonies of tortured men

Who sat through nights and nights of pain;

Tongue tied by the wicked sappor;

Gazing at you with hot imploring eyes?

These white lilies tossed their little heads

then In the moon-steeped ponds;

There was bouncing gaiety in the crisp chirping

Of the cricket in the undergrowth,

And as the surf-boats splintered the waves

I saw the rainbow in your eyes

And the flash of your teeth;

As each crystal shone,

I saw sitting hand in hand with melancholy

A little sunny child

Playing at marbles with husks of fallen stars,

Horrors were your flowers then, the bright red bougainvilled.

They delighted you.

Why do you now weep

And offer me this little gift

Of a dull onyx set in a crown of throns?

Songs of Sorrow - Kofi Awoonor

Dzogbese Lisa has treated me thus

It has led me among the sharps of the forest

Returning is not possible

And going forward is a great difficulty

The affairs of this world are like the chameleon faeces

Into which I have stepped

When I clean it cannot go.

I am on the world’s extreme corner,

I am not sitting in the row with the eminent

But those who are lucky

Sit in the middle and forget

I am on the world’s extreme corner

I can only go beyond and forget.

My people, I have been somewhere

If I turn here, the rain beats me

If I turn there the sun burns me

The firewood of this world

Is for only those who can take heart

That is why not all can gather it.

The world is not good for anybody

But you are so happy with your fate;

Alas! the travelers are back

All covered with debt.

Something has happened to me

The things so great that I cannot weep;

I have no sons to fire the gun when I die

And no daughter to wail when I close my mouth

I have wandered on the wilderness

The great wilderness men call life

The rain has beaten me,

And the sharp stumps cut as keen as knives

I shall go beyond and rest.

I have no kin and no brother,

Death has made war upon our house;

And Kpeti’s great household is no more,

Only the broken fence stands;

And those who dared not look in his face

Have come out as men.

How well their pride is with them.

Let those gone before take note

They have treated their offspring badly.

What is the wailing for?

Somebody is dead. Agosu himself

Alas! a snake has bitten me

My right arm is broken,

And the tree on which I lean is fallen.

Agosi if you go tell them,

Tell Nyidevu, Kpeti, and Kove

That they have done us evil;

Tell them their house is falling

And the trees in the fence

Have been eaten by termites;

That the martels curse them.

Ask them why they idle there

While we suffer, and eat sand.

And the crow and the vulture

Hover always above our broken fences

And strangers walk over our portion.

Call of The River Nun - Gabriel Okara

I hear your call

I hear it far away;

I hear it break the circle

Of these crouching hills

I want to view your face

Again and feel your cold

Embrace; or at your brim

To set myself and

Inhale your breath ; or

Like the trees, to watch

My mirrored self unfold

And span my days with

Song from the lips of dawn.

I hear your lapping call;

I hear it coming through;

Invoking the ghost of a child

Listening , where rivers birds hail

Your silver –surface flow

My river’s calling too

Its ceaseless flow impels

My found ‘ ring canoe down

Its inevitable course.

And each dying year

Brings near the sea – bird call,

The final call that

Stills the crested waves

And breaks in two the curtain

Of silence of my upturned canoe

O incomprehensible God!

Shall my pilot be

My unborn stars to that

Final call to Thee

O my river’s complex course?

Hehehe . . . nah, I don't even know who's wrong here.
I made that clear at the beginning, I refuse to choose sides.

You've mentioned looks of Sheridan and the producer, I haven't.
You have said you passionately support this cause. . .
You have said, you chose sides because yo 'have nothing to lose'.

And I'm the one being controlled by emotions??

You know what, it's expected. . . I won't spend a whole day discussing Edie Brit, you're allowed to continue in your witch-hunt.

Amya:
@eldee,

Eva is not publicly taking any side, not because she doesn't know the truth and therefore doesn't want to jump into any conclusions, No. Can't you see, she's only tryna be diplomatic. Publicly taking sides would only mean losing from one side or the other. She has so much to lose. If she takes side with Sheridan, she risks losing her job and infuriating the powers that be in moviedom. If she takes sides with Marc, she risks losing Sheridan's friendship, and being called a backstabbing naughty woman by a section of the public. Any of the two decisions could end her career. It'll only be wise for her to remain non-aligned.
My watchword . . . never let emotions make decisions for you.
You're not thinking clearly here because of your emotions.

The loss of Sheridan's friendship can and will not end Eva Longoria's career . . . infact, she'll prolly get a production role by being friends with the producer.
She refused to go the easy way like you obviously have.

Amya:
I on the other hand have nothing to lose. So i'l take sides all i want. From your comment below, it's also very clear which side you are on.

"You have made him guilty just and only because a fired and OBVIOUSLY DISGRUNTLED actress accused her producer of sexual harassment"
Nah . . . your emotions at work again.
I concluded she was annoyed for being fired because she sued for 'wrongful termination'.
I didn't imply anything else . . . just pointed out that they weren't sharing cookies after she got fired.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You're not taking sides?? Calling me sexist just because I refuse to be influenced by the media and Sheridan.
'People like that always have loads of skeleton in there closet.' . . .
'If she's accusing him falsely, it's all good . . .'

Where I'm from that called 'jumping into conclusions'.
You've made him guilty just and only because a fired and obviously disgruntled actress accused her producer of sexual harassment.

You never asked yourself why this never came up when she was the biggest star in the series after Eva Longoria.

I'm still taking a neutral stand on this till more info comes out . . .

Amya:
@eldee

and why the repeated reference to Eva? Do i detect a lil crush here?
Eya, too bad she's married. Kpele, lmao!
She's the biggest star on the show, and she's the first person that came out to take a neutral sound instead of jumping on every boat available.

Amya:
there's a probability that what nicolette alleged really happened. As far as i'm concerned, eva and others could as well be protecting there next pay check.

Of all the other housewives, nicolette was the only one that got a role without even auditioning. If you ask me, this is probably a case of a deal gone bad. Marc cherry probably thought that since he made nicolette, he could break her too.
That's your story, of course it could be a working relationship gone bad, but the sexual abuse?? Come on.
The sexual abuse part could be sour grapes because she obviously thought anyone could cut her off.

That's a serious allegation, but calling me sexist because I didn't jump on it is just wrong.

Eva Longoria is doing what any smart person will do, don't pick sides till you have the full story.

Amya:
ok, Let's see, em, My bad. please, let me erase what i said above. It was dumb i guess.

What i mean't to say was this. Desperate housewives is a good tv drama, It has all the ingredients that make it the viewers delight that it is. It's gat a great story line, a witty dialogue, it's serious lace with so much humour, it's gat a great cast e.t.c
My point is that it can be appreciated by anybody, Dumb asses, old women, genuises, primary school pupils and even CHAUVINISTIC MALES!

Watching desperate housewives does not make you less of the chauvinist that you are.
Nah . . . chauvinistic males don't like to see Lynette control her husband.
They don't see any reason why we should let a show that promotes gender equality be getting ratings.
If I were chauvinistic would I be happy that the most sexually active woman of the lot is gone??

You're blinded by stuff you don't even know, someone that actually thinks, like Eva Longoria, will watch and see if those accusations are actually true not just jump on the next bandwagon.

could be that you watch it to check out the reasoning of women.

I'm guessing that while you watch it, you have disapproval etched on your face, wondering the point of the whole drama?

I don't know why everyone's crying over this.
They came and showed the Nigeria you and I have ignored for years.
This part of Nigeria is the part you drive past, they don't have an NLC leader to demand equal pay for them.
They just live their lives without getting into crime.

Now you're not even ashamed that all your years in Nigeria, you never saw this on TV.
At least I've seen documentaries on the homeless and crime in council flats on BBC . . . NTA and all the local stations comfortably ignored this.

And now you're crying because BBC opened our yansh . . . abeg jare.
