Christianity EtcRe: Can You Be A Christian And Not Go To Church? by Elebiju: 11:59am On May 08, 2016

....He the same yesterday, today, and forever more.

The God who struck uzzah death just because he tried holding on the ark of covenant is the same God who did nothing to armed robbers who robbed a church in Benin.

Hmm
that's why He is God, I was there when the ox lost balance and uzzah tried to support the ark, you need to see it live and direct when he was struck dead because no man can support God. King david ordered the ark to be taken to the house of that wretched man Obededom though he was a levite, God blessed him in just three months and the king was forced to take the ark to Jerusalem.... I was there.

The building is not the church, all those gigantic buildings that gives you joy ain't the church. When two are gathered in His name He will surely be there, my cousin attends one church on the island just to mingle with rich folks and I'm sure they will fix a meeting for Friday at a club or elegushi beach..... Who are we deceiving?

.......
B) TITHING WAS AN INVOLUNTARY TAX TO SUPPORT ISRAEL; BELIEVERS ARE NOT A PART OF THE THEOCRATIC NATION.

In the Old Testament, there was both required and voluntary giving. The tithe was required. It was commanded for every Israelite to fund national worship and help the poor. In actuality, there was not just one tithe, but rather two or three ([1] Lev. 27:30-33, Num. 18:20-21; [2] Deut. 12:17-18; [3] Deut. 14:28-29), so that the total was not 10 percent, but more like 22 percent (see Charles Ryrie, Balancing the Christian Life [Moody Press], p. 86). Thus if we are required to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse today, we had better up the percentage from 10 to 22 percent!

C. TITHING IS NOT MENTIONED IN ANY INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CHURCH, ALTHOUGH MUCH IS SAID ABOUT GIVING.
If tithing is to be practiced by the Christian church, it seems strange that Paul did not mention it when he wrote of giving, especially to the predominately Gentile churches which would not be familiar with the Old Testament.

D. TITHING IS NOT MENTIONED IN ANY WRITINGS OF THE EARLY CHURCH FATHERS.

By itself this is not decisive, but it lends weight to the biblical arguments. If the early church practiced tithing, then the concept should surface somewhere in the writings of the church fathers of the second and third centuries. But it does not, even though giving was an important part of early Christian worship.

G. TITHING IS BURDENSOME FOR SOME AND TOO EASY FOR OTHERS.

If a man with a family of five makes #2000000 a year and tithes, he has #1800000 (apart from taxes) to support five people. If a childless couple makes #1000000 a year and tithes, they have #900000 (apart from taxes) to support two people. That would be burdensome to the man with five mouths to feed, but ridiculously easy for the couple.

You seem to be enjoying akwa ibom than the rest of us.

The answer is that tithing is not the New Testament standard for giving. Perhaps more than any other factor, giving reflects the condition of our hearts: “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matt. 6:21). You can fake some things, but you can’t fake giving your money! You may get mad at me, but I’m going to give it to you straight: If you give ten percent or less of your income to the Lord’s work, in most cases it reflects a lukewarm heart toward God. I used to give ten percent and thought I was doing fine. Then I made the mistake of preaching on giving! I discovered that God’s Word teaches that ...

We should not tithe because God wants us to give generously, and tithing is the bare minimum.

Our God is a generous, giving God who so loved the world that He gave that most precious gift, His only begotten Son. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). As God’s people who are to be like Jesus, we are to be generous givers.

The Bible teaches that God, who richly has supplied us with all good things, wants us “to be generous and ready to share” (1 Tim. 6:18). But what does generosity mean? Isn’t giving 10 percent of my income to the Lord’s work being generous? If not 10 percent, how much should I give?

1. Tithing is not the New Testament standard for giving.

Many churches promote a concept called “storehouse” tithing, based on Malachi 3:10, where God tells Israel to “bring the whole tithe into the storehouse.” They teach that the local church is the storehouse, the tithe belongs to God, and His blessing is conditioned upon faithfulness in tithing. One pastor in a church near me in California preached that if his people weren’t giving ten percent to that church, they were in sin and needed to go home and repent!

Before I critique this view, let me point out that there are some commendable points regarding tithing:
(1) Those who tithe are often acting in obedience to what they believe God has commanded.
(2) Tithing gets some to increase what they give.
(3) Tithing helps consistency and discipline in giving. But consider these seven reasons why tithing is not God’s standard for Christians:

A. TITHING WAS A PART OF THE LAW OF MOSES; BELIEVERS ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW.

Romans, Galatians, and other New Testament passages make it clear that Christians are not under the law of Moses. That does not mean that we are lawless, because we are under the law of Christ (1 Cor. 9:20-21; James 1:25; 2:8, 12; Rom. 13:8-10). Those aspects of the Mosaic law that reflect the moral character of God are valid under the New Covenant and are repeated as commands in the New Testament. But the church is never commanded to tithe.

Those who argue for tithing point out that Abraham and Jacob both tithed prior to the Mosaic law (Gen. 14:20; 28:22). Thus tithing supersedes the law, they argue. If the New Testament gave no further guidelines, that might be a valid point. But it does, as I will show. But there are other practices, such as circumcision and sabbath-keeping which pre-date the Law and yet are not binding on us.

If you examine the references to Abraham’s and Jacob’s tithing, you will see that God did not command them to tithe and there is no indication that this was their regular practice. On one occasion after a victory in battle, Abraham tithed the spoils from that battle, but nothing is said regarding his other possessions or his regular income (Gen. 14:20). To follow Jacob’s example would be wrong, because he was making a conditional vow before God, promising that if God would keep him safe and provide for him, then he would give God a tenth (Gen. 28:20-22). That’s hardly a good example to follow in giving! Tithing was required under the Mosaic Law, but believers are not under the Law.

TO BE CONTINUED....

But we take a whole 90% while giving GOD ordinary 10%
you can never give the giver, God does not needs your money. I quote from Deuteronomy 14:22-49.
22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other strong drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
How many levites do we have among our pastors? They are all fucking business men and politicians.

It also borders with the state stadium for lectures and other competitions. Speakers are scattered everywhere for steady party jambs in the evening till 10pm. What more do you want?
Yes, the camp is relatively new with regular maintenance, there is constant power (5am-10pm) and water supply, speakers are scattered everywhere for OBS and not for grooving. You will grove as you like at the mammy market because "our own mother" Lady Ngozi Chukwuka the state coordinator is a disciplinarian and she doesn't allows grooving on the pavilion, forget camp fire and endurance trek she may scrap it cos she cares for corp members like her own children, no soldier nonsense there and they blow the beagle at exactly 5am.
The hostels are not your rooms so be prepared for anything and try any means to avoid Jonathan hostel and humility hostel formerly known as ecomog hostel cos they are built like warehouses and they can accommodate over 400 PCM per hostel.if you struggle for early registration then you will surely make it into these two hostels but if you delay your registration like we did then you will find yourself in the more comfortable hostels like akpabio and the other ones. infact we met like you guys on Nairaland and we booked 2 God is Good buses at iyana ipaja straight to camp, kudos to Corper Seun. we delayed our registration in camp so we could share a room in akpabio hostel and it was fun.

As part of my agenda in exposing the culture of my people(Ilaje , Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijo e.tc) to the world, today we will be discussing about The Umale festival of the Itsekiri and Ilaje people. Its no longer news that the Ilaje share so many things with The Itsekiri nation, Be it language, Culture, Monarchy e.tc as such I do classify The Ilaje as an Itsekiri Offspring (Disputable) grin .. Here we go..

Umale Okere - Itsekiri

People living in the ancient town of Warri often looked with nostalgia to the season of Awankere, also called Umale Okere, an annual masquerade festival with epicentre of the celebration at Okere main square. It’s a mix of culture, tradition, dancing and humour. Umale Okere is virtually the most popular Itsekiri festival in Warri with so much social fun and excitement, attracting indigenes and non-indigenes alike beyond ethnic divide. Visitors and residents of Warri, including eminent personalities from all walks of life converge at Okere to watch the festival.

People – young and old, including children, line up on both sides of the expansive Okere Road from Esisi junction to the centre point, a massive crowd, jostling curiously to catch a glimpse of the masquerades, men and women dancing to the traditional drum beats with amidst sexy, obscene remarks by women and tantalizing songs, emotional and romantic.

The elegance and beauty of the festival, graced by the masquerades in attires almost akin to the costume and apparels worn by Eyo masquerades in Lagos during Adamorisha festival are amazing.

The origin of Umale Okere festival dates back to pre- independence years in the era of British colonialism. It emanated from Ekpen family, owners of Okere that married a woman called Diden who hailed from the neighbouring Ekurede, the place where the palace of the Olu of Warri is located. An Ekurede woman married to Ekpen family of Okere. The masquerades are customary acknowledgement of the marital ties between the two.

The leader of the masquerades is called Öshogwa Umale”with several bodyguards while the others filed out in a single line for seven market days of Okere till the last day. At the rear of the masquerades is “Okwooye”, wearing a big hat and holding a whip, dressed in baggy attire touching the ground due to oversize.

The mother of them all, referred to as Queen, is called “Eleghe”, very gentle, majestic and moves in measured steps, walking on red carpet. It is rarely seen in public – once in 50 years. Many people see Eleghe only once in their life time. Its public appearance is now reduced to 25 years.

According to Erikowa who lived in Ekurede, since 1956, Eleghe came out twice. For the masquerades, after their appearance on the seventh market day, they go back to the shrine known as “Ekun”, opening their faces on the way.

Women come out to seek their blessings and favour for children, to strike out failures and curses from their lives, to seek success in life. On the last day also, everyone comes to appeal to the Umales as they return to the shrine to cast away their misfortunes and problems, bring prosperity, give them long life, take away sickness, troubles and not to have afflictions in life again.

Umale Festival - Ilaje People

UMALE Aju is the anscestral masked dancer of the Jomoyetoyo royal family of [ Odojomo, Igbotako, Osooro] Ilaje, Ondo State in Nigeria. The dancers represent anscestral spirit, the costumes are carved headress in the shape of water fowls or masks with colorfull fabrics covering the body.

They dance to choreographed drum rhythms and dance steps. The festival is usually celebrated around Christmas time every 7 years. Many members of the family return home to celebrate the ways of our anscestors.

Regarding Ilaje names, some of our names are written in the standard Yoruba language, while others maintain their distinctive Ilaje flair.

Here are some Ilaje names:
Emiloju - Emi lo ju
Meseghan - Mi o se won
Mabamije - Ma bami je
Oloronjughan - Olorun ju won
Oraise - Ori ti ko se
Emopin - A ko mo opin
Omawunmi - Omowunmi (Isekiri write OMAWUMI)
Molewato
Ayanfe

The names are taken from my family. My own name is also among.

Lene - ta lo ni (was a most Reverend Apostle of the Zion Movement. Ilaje are traditionally adherent of the Cherub and Seraph church)
Megbodofo - Mi o gbudo so
Elebiju - eniti o lebi lo ju
Ebiesuwa - Ebi o se iwa
Ojagbohunmi - ilu gbohun mi (Ilajes call "ilu" Oja, and call "oja" obon. Mo nlo si oja ni Ilaje ni: Mo mi yu obon. Mo nlo si ilu a je: Mo mi yu oja. Ago ni a npe abule ni Ilaje.
Semudara - was also a popular priest/prince

Before, the Ilaje gospel singers of the seventies and eighties used to sing in Ilaje, but they now use the standard Yoruba to appeal to more audience.
I wished I took my audio cassettes with me when I left Nigeria in the days of yore.
