Nairaland / General / Re: What Keeps You Going, Despite Life's Struggles And Pains by eleven(m): 3:11pm On Nov 15, 2012
For me is the grace and promises of GOD and the beautiful smiles of my kids and lovely wife.

I rarely experience depression in the face of struggles but let my guards down yesterday when a client I got the right property requested for suddenly changed his mind on the price and offered a very low price inspite of knowing the initial amount from the onset.

I immediately went into depression mode after our discussion because so much effort was put in trying to secure the place for my client.

Thank GOD for my beautiful family as soon as I got home to their ever smiling faces my depression disappeared and everything returned to normal.

GOD and my family...my world!

obamat: Are you interested in transport biz but afraid of the troubles, I am into transport biz and looking for investors to invest and expand this biz in Portharcourt.
You can invest by adding your car to our fleet and pay for managing or you can do higher purchase with us.
Transportation biz is a very nice one and profiting also, so lets do this together.

for enquiries call 08181668922, obamven@yahoo.com

Nice one. Your concept makes a lot of sense.

It makes sense especially for those just laid off work with cars to use this medium as a bridge pending when something better shows up.

Is anybody here also interested in this or currently rendering this type of service in Lagos? I would love to connect and expand ideas with you. Email me: imoisilis@yahoo.com

Gpnice: Am planning of going into boutique business, i need to know How much can get me started and what are pitfalls in this Line of business.
Please ur (only those that are into d boutique line of business should respond)useful response will be appreciated.

Starting a boutique business just for profit will fade out after a while.

You need to first of all have passion for fashion and good dress sense.

It could casual, corporate or traditional wears, kids only or mixed. Safer to start specializing in one area.

Location is also important, the people in your immediate environment can help you decide which area to start from...for example if the people around your location are mostly students, it will be better to start with casual wears first before moving to other categories and you are surrounded by offices start with corporate or mix corporate with smart casual

Asper start up capital, can be as little as what you have depending on your status.

You can start with as low as 10k without a shop provided you can do personal selling from home

Its an interesting business especially for people who love to look good and understand the market dynamics

Nairaland / General / Re: How Has The Ban On Okadas In Lagos Affected You? by eleven(m): 10:59pm On Oct 28, 2012
irohadis: Fashola and his advisers, by pursuing this policy have really shown the height of their ineptitude. Forget the issue of being humane. Economics 101 should have taught them how crazy and idiotic this policy is.

Job loses:
It is conservative to say that there are 100,000 Okadas in Lagos State. 100,000 Okadas = 100,000 jobs. Plus, another 200,000 jobs for people who lease, sell and repair Okadas, as well as people who sell engine oil and spare parts to Okada people. Then there are the street kitchens who feed them with food and snacks. Let us say that conservatively, the total jobs lost = 300,000. Let us assume that each Okada job makes an average of =N=2000 a day. =N=2000 x 300,000 Okadas = =N=600,000,000 (six hundred million) a day in lost business to the Lagos economy.

Killing the future:
Then there are the kids that may drop out of school because of loss of income for their parents, others that would die of simple illnesses for lack of free medical care. These children's health and education define the future of Lagos to a significant extent. Let me leave out the extended family and networks that these incomes support. I can't quantify the cost to Lagos in this respect.

Undermining efficiency:
It is the height of ignorance to fail to recognise the efficiency that Okadas bring to business operations and activities in Lagos. Where are they roads? As bad as the riders are, Okada's are the most efficient means of getting around the gridlock that is Lagos during the day. No government invited them to start operations. Okadas began in Lagos organically in response to a need for a faster way to get around and a way to reach the nooks and corners ill serviced by public transport vehicles. That need has not gone away and the weak infrastructure has not changed. The immediate cost to businesses small and large that depend on Okadas may also run into the hundreds of millions a day.

Unfair devaluation of private asset value:
The estimated 200,000 Okada vehicles in Lagos, who is going to buy them? What happens to their value? Let us say they are each worth at least =N=50,000 on average. That is 10 billion Naira worth of private assets devalued with a single policy. Is there an Okada buy back policy to at least give these now jobless people some capital to find another means of livelihood??

The idiotic case for the ban:
Yes robbers use Okadas to terrorise the city. Yes Okada riders can be rough on the road. Yes many have been maimed by Okadas. These are good reasons to see Okada as a problem, but hardly a justification. Why? If you think robbers are using Okadas to gain an advantage, imagine if 1% of 300,000 turn to robbery for a lack of employment. That is three thousand robbers injected into the society in one go. Imagine if 5% turn to other forms of crime or negative social behaviour. That makes 18,000. Do we not have enough of those in Lagos. Do we have the jails to hold them?

Okada riders are rough on the road. So is every one. Unless it is a different Lagos, the Lagos I know is one where you deserve a special license for being able to drive in it. Almost every one is in a hurry. It is easy to pick out the small guys. But how can a government that has not built the good roads banish road users for being rough. The terrain shapes the nature of navigation. Many have died and been maimed by Okada accidents. But more have died from the bad and neglected government roads. If you need to sack any one in this regard, it is the guys in power, who have misused our collective wealth instead of building our infrastructure.

The bigger nuisance in Nigerian and in Lagos is the governance and not Okada. Those in power are stealing much more than robbers have stolen with Okadas. They have left the infrastructure to decay in a city with so much wealth. They are building up elite neigbourhoods while the masses wade the floods to their homes. They have killed more through their negligence. The Okada man is an easy target to help clean up their mess. If you need to decongest the roads, build more and expand existing roads, create new public transportation modes (trains, buses, boats), build bicycle lanes, etc. If you need to improve security, equip the security forces and install more security infrastructure. Think for solutions first before taking the easy and ill informed way.

Fashola has really really disappointed me and ACN can not win a free election in Lagos if this policy stands. The masses are the majority and not the elite.

GOD bless you. Your analysis is so on point.

miqos02:
No friend u got me wrong, pacemaker gave 3biz ideas and I picked out the one on cloth rentals.let me ask u a question can u rent a shirt or trouser to an event?

I think in choosing a business one needs to consider the culture of the people and the environment.

Pacemaker's idea on cloth rentals will work more for native and traditional attires in the western and eastern part of Nigeria. You can further develop it to costume rentals for upcoming actors and actresses.

It can also go with other rentals like chairs, table, drums, pots, plates, cutlery and canopy rentals

One thing I have learn about business is that you can never know the full opportunities involved until you run it.

Liffey: Been following this post closely everyday since its inception and I must say Pacemaker and 2ruink hav done an amazing job here. I currently reside in Dublin and hv always looked into means of makin money. I tried opening an event magazine here, but it failed cos I lost the zeal. I tried opening an in house betting shop in 9ja, but failed cos of d numerous bottlenecks in opening one back home. Now I might have failed cos I have no passion for these lines of business, or mayb I wasn't too prepared and didn't carry out enuf research....it's important that I state this to people who might b reading this : money is not my problem whatsoever.

After all these, I hv decided to open up an online trading and marketing site for Afrikans both home and abroad... Would not put too much detail about it here as this idea is fresh and was suggested by a friend of mine who works as a site engineer and senior website ads manager in Google Hq here in Dublin. He has the main keywords emanating from google Africa (so u see why I won't go into details of d proposed site here)...

The idea is gonna b marketing marketing marketing!!!!!! 70% of cost is going to go into mktng of this site. Am still designing the site, so watch this space and AIT NIGERIA,AIT INT, VOX AFRICA, HITV, NOLLYWOOD, LINDA IKEJI BLOG AND NAIRALANDER FOR ADS REGARDING THIS SITE SOON.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BCOMING A PART OF THIS ANYWIA IN D WORLD, DROP UR INTEREST ON THIS PAGE FIRST! Thanks

Guy, we share the same passion and aspiration. I hope you will be coming for the meeting so we can meet.

Cheers!

Business / Re: Guys, Let's Talk Business by eleven(m): 5:22am On Oct 22, 2012
A quick addition...when generating ideas, do not burden yourself thinking the identified problem needs complex solution.

The right ideas are always very, very simple and when the right idea is mentioned its leaves you with the kind of @mabelly reaction to @stpat1 school venue suggestion...LOL. That's is the exact feeling you get when it drops. It can drop anytime and in anywhere.

That's why its important to have the right, relaxed environment where everyone is encouraged to speak as his spirit leads him or her without fears of being rejected.

Don't be surprised if nothing comes up on Saturday, only ensure the group mail is up and running so when it drops on any of us he/she can quickly use the medium to communicate to all.

Please remember ideas are always extremely SIMPLE, you can't force it, you can only identify the problems for it to come faster.
Business / Re: Guys, Let's Talk Business by eleven(m): 4:55am On Oct 22, 2012
I support the idea of using a school for the location.

Apart from it having the basic facilities (chairs, table, blackboard and carpark) needed for the meeting, its also not a logistics challenge to locate for those of us who might not be familiar with the area of the yet to be chosen location.

I have a second thought about people coming up with ideas on the meeting day. I think what we need is for us to use the days before the meeting to look for problems within our immediate environment and beyond.

Problem identification should be our major focus on that day, from the mentioned problems and complaints we will generate the ideas we need to solving them in the simpliest, most unique and efficient manner.

That way the meeting will be more participatory and everyone will be able to contribute his/her own quota in solving identified and mentioned problems.

From the answers and ideas generated, we will sort and fine tune to get a generally acceptable solution and work around solving it and if we can't get around that day it will be food for thought for members to work on and discuss in the next meeting or via the yahoo group mail.

Just my 2 cents hopes it makes little sense.

@ Pacemaker & El Matteo

Something tells me you guys will become best of friends through this project and I believe it strongly...I would love to meet the both of you GOD's willing.

Please let's close this issue and focus on our main task...thank you.

I don't consider this innovation. Nigerians can do better that this ebook nonsense. What is ebook if I may ask? Read my thread and tell me if there is any mention of ebook. We are trying to build an industry like linkedin, intuit, zappos, irokotv and you guys are here talking about ebook? Use your intelligence to create something and don't follow others. I may withdraw my partnership with 2ruik and co if what I will be hearing is ebook. Why can't you guys think of things that will attract diasporians so they can invest in your ideas?

Your above comment is not fair on @El Mateo...We shouldn't be addressing ourselves in this manner.

Attitude like above does not encourage people to speak their minds for fear of being rejected, abused or laughed at.

In an idea generated meeting every comment and suggestion should be welcomed.

Great ideas today were once viewed as nonsense. Nonsense is the raw material for sense. I hope you understand me and apologize to him.

Please I am yet to get my form...my email address again is: imoisilis@yahoo.com

For new entrants like me who are still trying to catch up...I think one of the ways we can catch up quickly is to print the whole page or alternatively convert it to PDF in print mode and read as a single thread instead of opening pages.

Will be back shortly on how to convert it PDF file. Thank you

N.B: I have tried converting the file to PDF so I could upload here for new entrants to quickly read and be up to date but NL no longer prints all pages...only prints current page...sorry.
