Business / Re: Is Financial Independence Truly Linked to Self-Employment? by eleven(m): 7:00pm On Apr 16, 2012
OP is right. Financial Independence is not the same thing as self employment.

However the case he presented is not necessary so.

Some employees also faces down time like their self employed counterpart.

If an employee is prudent and can save over time, he will have money but not necessarily financial independence because the moment he quits his job and stop earning, his savings start depleting.

Attempting to do business without the necessary experience and skills might leave him buying experience with his hard earned savings.

Unlike the self employed who is continually looking for opportunities to multiply his income and profits.

A times, he might be lucky, a times he might not be but can always pick himself again.

It looks easier for the self employed to attain financial independence faster than an employee.

Just this morning, my friend told me of a one GM of a multinational coy who called him while we were together pleading for 10k to take care of himself.

According to him while the man was in service, he was so big that you would think he will never be broke again but today he is looking for just 10k to help himself.

Same scenario can happen to both the self employed and the employee, the difference is that the self employed stands a better chance of recovering faster than the employee. I might be wrong though.

Business / Re: Businesses You Regretted Doing & The Ones You're Glad You Tried by eleven(m): 3:53pm On Apr 02, 2012
aasog1: I have been doing some business since I graduated from Yabatech since 2005,
I have tried my hands on some couple handful of business. Some worthwhile, and with great ROI, worth going into. I hope we can share experiences and ideas, and here is mine!

1. I have tried Computer/Phone Accessories in Ikeja only to know if you dont have a Yahoo! Boys chain of suppliers, you would soon run bankrupt. This link was scarce to me, and besides, I dont know how on earth people like Slots and his ilks generate the kind of "Distributorship Fees" running into $1,000,000 or more to pay Nokia, Blackberries and the likes to be direct suppliers of their products in Nigeria.

2. Went back to my profession as an engineer, managing my father's construction and engineering firm, only to discover Nigerians don't want to pay for quality. People just want to build, and only pay for the materials, and not the engineers. I love the job, but you sometimes feel like your wasting your life building peoples dreams, while you spend the next 4-6 months of your year working for 500k or less, while spending the remaining 6 months fighting dirty for another contract. And the contracts sometimes are so slow paced, you get irritated. Its a great job, but totally disastrous if you totally rely on it unless you work for J'Berger and other bigger construction companies.

3. And then, some windfall popped in, I went into Poultry, managed by me part-term with a farm attendant while working Real Estates and Engineering. The variables involved in this business was so crazy: the quality of birds, farm location, access to loans (which is 0%), finding a sincere poultry attendant, dealing with predators: snakes, wild cats, etc, Stress management, eggs theft, diseases, litter management, etc. Seriously, i havent even been in Poultry for more than 3 years, and all of a sudden, my farm is surrounded by hundreds of houses which were non existent when I went to Ifo in 2009, and now they want me out of the location, due to our occasional once in a month litter clearing mess. Which really isnt nice at all.

4. Selling the poultry for a whooping profitable amount, I'm planning going into starting a school, and building 1 or 2 Commercial structures along the express road. Ive long created a long list of where Nigerians pour their money, and I think education is one of the top 5.

So, my biggest regrets, computer / phone parts, poultry (though its fun and awesomely rewarding, though its insanely expensive and sooooo long-term and not for hustlers but investors!)...commercial properties, wish I could do more: A land I got for 4mil along the express September 2011 is now been sought after by a fuel station that wants to pay 6mil, despite, I havent done nothing on it. But i aint selling. So, I guess express properties are wonderful, but also expensive.

I cant keep listing....judging my experiences though totaling just 7 years, is little compared with some business veterans in here.

Please, what businesses do you wish you NEVER try. And which would you want to keep doing. Even at old age.

Nice one. Mine is blogging. I started blogging 5 years ago, but slowed down drastically. I have picked it up again and I am happy I did because its better late than never.

Another business I regretted in totality is selling men's briefs and lady accessories...meeen that one na gbese kill my first consignment from Americagrin. I lost a lot of money in that business due to credit purchases and lack of time to chase my creditors.

I am understudying another business and will definitely use the lessons learnt from my past experience to make it succeed.

@OP,

Hope you don't mind my posting your story on my blog to assist others.
Business / Re: Big Business or Small Business? Which is More Important To Nigeria's Economy? by eleven(m): 11:07pm On Apr 01, 2012
Both of them are important to the economy as they provide complementary service to one another.

The big firms needs the smaller firms to manage their non-core professional areas, provide local raw materials items for production and in some cases manage their distribution network as well as the smaller firms need the big ones businesses to survive.

For Nigerian economy I believe the small business provide more in terms of jobs when we look at the employment index (Not too sure of the stats at the moment).

The big firms contribute more in terms of taxes to the government due to their organized structures while the small firms pay taxes also but a lot of their taxes paid do not get to government coffers.

About size of small firms in Nigeria, I think it's as low as one staff set up unlike the US with bigger economy where there are different levels.

Though I believe the size status might likely change with time as the orientation is now gradually shifting from paper qualifications to skilled work and entrepreneurship due to the high level of unemployment/job cuts which is forcing more people to be creative to survive.

This i think will be good for the economy in the long run though it's really hurting us now.

Richardid: Greetings to all Nairalanders.please i need your help. I want to venture into polythene bag production .somebody should pleasd give me an insight iof the business.

OP. I am currently learning the ropes of a related field - waste polyethene processing with a view to go into polyethene production with time.

Though I have learnt one or two things about polyethene production, the type of machines needed, types of polyethene raw materials, coloration and their finished products.

Read these articles relating to waste recycling last night, might be of help to you: startups.co.uk/waste-and-recycling-business.html

Business / Re: Why Nigerian Youths Need 2 Embrace Enterpreneur Skills by eleven(m): 7:16pm On Apr 01, 2012
I think entrepreneur is the key to grow the economy upward again.

Entrepreneurs will assist greatly in reducing unemployment in the economy because they create jobs.

Yes, Nigeria is a very challenging environment for entrepreneurs with the lack of basic infrastructures needed to set one up easily. But then Necessity is the mother of invention and invention is one of the key drives behind entrepreneurial success.

Start ups might be challenging but focused determination keeps an entrepreneur afloat.

Being an innovative Entrepreneur is definitely key to success provided one is focused on building an organization from the scratch rather than a one man business.

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by eleven(m): 8:42pm On Mar 19, 2012
George_D:

hello cretin,
there is usually no difference in charge time when your using nepa or phcn to charge your battery bank whether your inverter is turned on or off. reason being that when your inverter is connected to public power, it is configured to automatically transfer public power to your house while at the same time charging your battery bank. there is enough amps available in public power to take care of both processes independently.

the problem however is when your using solar panels to charge your battery bank and should in case your panels are undersized for your system. in such a scenario, your charge time will be affected by usage of your inverter.

and depending on whether your generator is adequately sized to carry your inverter, there shouldn't be any difference in charging time. however if your generator usually struggles to power your inverter, you may find that it takes longer time to charge your battery bank with your gen.

hope this helps?

Yes it does. Thanks for the info.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by eleven(m): 11:31pm On Mar 17, 2012
@Cretin,

I bought my Zenith Batteries for 45k each from the Henry guy George referred to me. Call him on 08025810677, I think he should still have some batteries left.

@ George,

My brother and I had a little argument on charging the inverter today and will like to know what you think.

Bone of contention is if the batteries charges faster when the inverter is turned off or turned on.

Also if NEPA charges it faster or generator.

We appreciate your opinion on this.

Thanks as usual.

@George,

Thanks. Got the battery from the guy and have installed the inverter, can't believe I have not thought of fuel since I started using the inverter.

Unfortunately I lost my job same week of the installation but I thank GOD buying fuel which was a daily routine before have been removed from my expenses now.

With electricity to cool my head down and strategise my next moves I know it is well.

Thanks once again.
