PoliticsRe: Al Qaeda Hails "brother" Who Carried Out The "heroic Attack" by ElRazur: 9:33pm On Dec 28, 2009
If this is true, this is why we need condemnation from prominent islamic scholars. The silence that comes up when there is a terror attack from Islamic community can be deafening at times. To me, no forth condemnation is like saying "Well done boys, now go and blow them up some more"

It would be nice to see more Muslims speak out against these sort of things. After all, Islam is meant to be a peacful religion right?
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Man Attempts To Detonate Explosive On Delta Flight In US by ElRazur: 9:26pm On Dec 28, 2009
debosky:
The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) of Nigeria has condemned it  through their secretary general - they have said it is an isolated act and condemned in it's totality. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8431530.stm
That is good, however what weight does it carry? I am very sceptical.

Again, it has been spoken against. The fact is, there are many extremist sects within the Islamic community and they will often receive criticism. The fact is, the media is not as interested in condemnation of violence as they are in tacit endorsement of violence.
A one time condemnation do not make cover the previous atrocities. Where was the condemnation during the Denmark violence? During the Miss Nigeria fiasco, During the various clashes as a result of differences in religion? Will there be condemnation if the whole media wasnt focused on this issue right now? Having said that, it is good to see one coming.

The issue is more complicated than that - some will argue that it is a matter of interpretation, after all the peaceful and moderate Muslims of Senegal read the same Quran, so do the Muslims of Tanzania who have never been involved in any terrorist activity. One might also say the same bible was read by members of doomsday cults who end up killing their members.
We all know the issues are complicated. The complications are one of many reasons people like me do not engage or induldge in religion of any form. In some ways, you may have hit the nail on the head there, perhaps all religion are all forms of cult in one for or the other?

There will inevitably be condemnations, however the key issue for me is examining those portions of the Qur'an and Hadiths that appear  to promote violence and have a debate on these issues. Failure to do so will result in blanket condemnations which do little to shed more light on the issue.
Dude I am open up for a debate, but you go right ahead to the so called Islamic section to try and debate issues you have raised and your thread get locked quicker than one can blink. Why is that?

Overall, I am in some way happy that a condemnation was made, but the weight it carries is something I am sceptical of. Bokoharam and co, and those who want sharia imposed on those who are even non-muslims clearly do not subscribe to this SCIA.

- The answer and reason is simple, its because those prominent figures know that Islam supports terrorism . . . hence their silence.
Please give the people who are Muslims a chance to say something. wink
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Man Attempts To Detonate Explosive On Delta Flight In US by ElRazur: 8:57pm On Dec 28, 2009
Hi guys. I suppose the dust have settled a little bit now and time to start asking some questions.

I am about to make a post that is questioning certain things in relation to Islam, please do not see this as an attack on Islam. Surely, any religion should not be afraid of questioning when things appears a bit fuzzy? And no, I am not turning this into any Islamaphobia, those who know me will realise I am a person of no religion.

I have seen the countless condemnation from Nigerians, West Africans and a lot of Human beings of all sorts. Yet one thing that I am yet to see is a condemnation from a prominent Islamic figure. Perhaps I missed it? A few of you may be wondering as to why I am making this post, but if any of you follow my posts, I have made it clear that in these times, people have started making an association between Islam, violence and terrorism [whether right or wrong], just the same way there is an association of Catholic churches with Child sexual abuse.

I noticed that when Islam feels threatened or several questions that are considered blasphemous are asked, the prominent islamic leaders are quick to issue a fatua [Fatua is like a direct other which ask every muslim in the world to kill a particular person as it is necessary]. If anyone remembers the Author Suleman Rushdie, a fatua was placed on his head for his works he published against Islam.

Yet here we are, a guy who appears to have travelled to re-known terrorist haven and intent on blowing up a plane but failed in the process. How come no prominent Islamic figure have come out to condemn these attacks? How come no Emir, Sultan or some Grand Khadir have come out to speak against this atrocity? Surely, if any prominent islamic scholar can issue a fatua on the head of anyone, if Islam can go on a rampage for silly things like a drawing of a cartoon, surely, it wont be hard to issue a condemnation of this particular act?

I have tried speaking to my friend - who is a Muslim - but he is not able to provide an answer, but instead try and ask if christains should apologise for the action of one man. Well, my argument is that right now, I do not care about the Christian scenario he is painted. This is about Islam, and as such let us deal with that. After all, this guy read the same Quran as any other muslims and prayed 5 times a day as them and most likely give sakath. . . .So why no one is making no condemnation?

If no condemnation is forth coming, this is doing nothing but reinforcing the view that Islam, violence and terrorism goes hand in hand.

Opinions please.

@lagosboy

You are starting to sound like a typical violent muslim . . .

- why are you bothering about the analysis of how he prepared the bomb. . .

- I do not care how he prepared the bomb . . .

- Stop trying to derail the thread with useless and idiotic analysis of what you think might have happened. . .

- WHAT DOES IT MATTER HOW IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE . . .

- WHAT DOES IT MATTER WHETHER HE PREPARED IT IN THE TOILET OR THE KITCHEN OR THE LIVINGROOM. . .

THE BOTTOMLINE IS THAT IT IS REPORTED THAT HE HAS CONFESSED TO BEING A TERRORIST . . .

Stop making silly excuses that sound like you are trying to explain how the chicken crossed the road . . . we do not care and do not want to know . . . The bottom line is that people could have lost their lives and their loved ones merely based on the action of this Real Muslim (that was doing exactly as Allah instructed) . . .

I was initially starting to think that you would for the first time actually choose to completely condemn what happened without trying to explain it away . . . yet it seems you are hell bent on explaining away the unexplainable. . . guess a leopard can't really change its spots hence why you seem to be hell bent on going on with your should have could have nonsense and useless supposed analysis of what might have happened.

Infact i am starting to suspect that[b] you are not happy that he did not succeed[/b] . . . you are starting to sound as if you wish he had succeeded.

This your mentality and attempt at obsfucation of the facts is that reason why i said: Yoruba muslims are starting to become as dangerous as the northern muslims . . .cus the utterances that come out of your mouths sometimes on nairaland sometimes makes it difficult to differentiate the intent. .

nothing personal, infact this is the first time lm meeting you online.

Every system need to change, or else it would be consume by change itself. My argument is we need more than one moderator. Kosovo can only can only effectively address complaints, moreover the guy is not working full time. We need atleast 5 moderators to provide around the clock proper monitoring and be pro active. They dont have to wait for a complaint before taking action, they should be able to take action the moment they site a negative thread.
So we agree on "Active moderation" "Quality post" "Enforcing rules" and having a "Zero tolerance approach to negativity"?

Cool. Finally we see eye to eye.

Foremost, Seun most be commended for setting up a true democratic forum, even personal insults directed at him and the moderator are allowed, what else do people want from him.

The nature of the forum is similar to the reality of the Nigeria state. Every single Nigerian from the president to the last man is tribal. In Nigeria the 3 major tribes dont like each other, there is at least one communal conflict every single week in Nigeria.

The forum is only reflecting the reality on the ground, why expect something different.
Oga. Nothing democratic about this forum. Just because personal insult are directed at him do not mean that it is all what people want. People appear to want other things, but is he listening? Hence why I said nothing democratic around here.

Yes I agree with you, here is what I said in another thread:

"[s]I don't think it is full of crap, there are some few meaningful post there, but the majority are just crap upon crap. If you follow the whole thread, it is quick to see how it move from a case of terrorism [which is what it is] to it going towards religion and tribalism.[/s]

It shouldn't come as no surprise, Nairaland is featured and frequented by people who are mostly Nigerians who are still at home [and some here but refuse to leave the old ways] and a greater percentage have what some will describe as a backward or closed mindset.

They say show me your friend and I will tell you the kind of person you are. Only that in this case, Nairaland demonstrate fully well the issues plaguing Nigeria on several levels."

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-371837.0.html

So yeah to some extent, I agree with you on that one. But let me say this, we can improve things and should not allow where we come from be something that determines what one can achieve.

I have never been a moderator before and I do not know what technology is at the disposal of the moderator. If there are technological contraints, then maybe, there should be additional moderators to assist Kosovo. Kosovo is a step-up from RichyBlack, who not only allowed tribe-bashing threads to flourish but also joined in the bashing sometimes as well as insulting posters who disagreed with him. I am yet to see such behaviour from Kosovo.
Yeah your suggestion is up to Seun I guess.

Yeah, RichyBlack did nothing and allowed his views to cloud his judgment. Something forum moderators aren't suppose to do - I,e conflict of interest etc. I think the problem with Kosovo is that there are so much problem than an improvement from RichyBlack to Kosovo is not enough, we need something radical and like I said before, I am not so sure it would come anytime soon.

Its not about quality, its about naivety and delusion. Let me give you a better idea, if you think you can do a better job, why dont you set up your own forum, and we shall be their to judge you in 3 months time.
huh Yeah you are naive and probably deluded. Here is another way of looking at things. I play computer games a lot and do beta-testing for a few big names - Konami being the biggest. You know, they listen to what consumers [users] have to say and improve on it. They do not tell people yearning for better games to go and make their own games.

Using your logic, any one that disagrees with you should go make his own forum? Okay, what if I do not want to? Look, there is nothing personal here, all most of us want is Quality post, elimination or restriction of certain system - tribalism etc. Over all, we all want this place to be a better experience hence why we raise concerns. Jeez, you do not cut your nose to spite your face you know.

All you guys know, is to condemn other peoples work. Step up to the challenge, set up your own forum, and we shall see how its compare to Nairaland. Nonsense
Who is condemning. . . . Jeez. You mean I am voicing concerns and pointing out where I felt things ain't up to scratch? Dude, if you have a product, you listen to the end users. Insulting the Admin and Moderator is not the best way to be more Civilized than the Members which you have constantly bashed. Your comments have showed that you may even be worse than the people being criticized by you.

In as much as we try to enforce the forums rules, it would be most unwise to deleted every thread that it posted by members. where is the Freedom of speech? Nairaland is not a Military barrack, It is a home of Nigerians and Friends of Nigerians.

@ElRazur    Only a person who has no LIFE would moderate any forum for 24 hours a day!
That said and done, let get back to more serious issues of National importance cheesy
Are you blind? Do you know an insult when you see one? Here - "You are A SlowPoke" now that is an insult. Saying one is ignorant is not an insult. You know it is the same as saying one is not in the know.

If anything you comments shows that you are ignorant by your inability to distinguish between an insult and non-insult. Yeah I am brash and my post filled with aggression and "in your face" but insult? Oh please.

Who is asking you to delete every thread? Dude you are very lame. I used to like you when you posted in the game section, where is your logic? There is a difference between allowing freedom of speech and moderating the junks that YOU have appeared to allow to flourish unchecked.  Tell me, how hard is it to delete a thread? Jeez. What is the point of having a moderator that promotes spam in a section that is craving for Quality thread?

Look internet is serious business [look it up]  and so is keeping junks out and quality in on a forum. If you can't do the job, why take it? I have used forums bigger than this - Ocuk forums - and all of these craps are not allowed over there. I guess by your logic, those who run the place do not have a life? What a joke.

You clearly cannot see that you are letting junk flourish and heck, even promoting it [Your comment in the silly picture thread will suggest so]

Here is what I said to someone who post a rubbish and silly thread earlier on:

There is a thread - about 40 pages plus - on the same topic. there isnt a need to create one just for the sole purpose of making a silly point. Seriously, can that point not be made in the existing thread? [s]Further more, the issues of the images have been addressed before, so you are like 48 hours late.[/s] If you have taken time to read the existing thread, instead of coming to create a crap one, then you would realise.

Finally, useless thread like yours do nothing but drags down the quality of debate here. It is not a must you have to make a thread. Before you do, check if there is an existing topic on what you want to make first.  If you see something on the internet and want to bring it to the attention of others, there is a chance millions of people have seen it before you, and a very good chance there is an existing thread.

Tribalism must be eliminated from this forum. Tribalism create confusion, ignorance, apathy, and disunity among the members of the forum. The rules of the forum have to be changed.
Dude as much as I agree with you, I will have to say it won't happen for very simple reasons - Most of my people who use this forum are ignorant and Seun knows this, and from where I stand, either Seun is himself ignorant or he is playing a simple game. I am guessing he is playing a simple game - but ignorance cannot be dismissed - Seun is making revenue from all the traffic that frequent this forum. Look on your screen and you will see advert plugins of all kind flashing at you.

I am sure you get the idea, the more controversy generated here, the more traffic it will attract and the more chances people clicking on the advert and seun getting paid. I compared this site sometimes ago and based on the amount of traffic this site and the other one [Nairalist  or so] attracts, I think he makes in the region of about £250.00 plus a month.

I have been using forums since they become popular on the internet and that is a long time. . . . . .It is not hard to moderate a forum, however, look around here in politics alone, loads of rubbish and unnecessary threads are allowed to flourish, the registration process is a simple process [some will even say crude] all done in my opinion on the basis of generating traffic.

Just look around and you will see that most of the sub forums are questionable etc.

The problem of course is that as time goes by, the effect will wear off and people will desire quality over quantity and move elsewhere. However, in the mean time it is working for him.

I have always challenged the moderation around here, and from what I can see, it appears that either the moderators are too lazy or seun is restricting their powers. Surely, it is not rocket science to remove a thread? It is not rocket science to enforce very simple rules to prevent people from posting junks? But I guess it would be a catch 22 and Seun aint about to lose revenue. smiley

PS
What we need is Active moderation. Those who have proper internet access, be it on their phone, on the go etc should be made moderators and allowed to run the forum so as to keep quality up. Oh using the RTM button sucks, thread still flourish and never get removed on time.

- Facts do not matter as far as islam and its apologists are concerned . . . . what matters is "death to amerrika"  grin . . .

- No muslim would ever admit anything that would make islam look bad . . .the best they are going to do is say "islamic extremists" did it, pretending as if Mohammed himself was not an islamic extremist and hence anyone trying to emulate mohammed automatically  becomes a terrorist himself or herself.
You may have a point. It was what I was saying to winniret [/b]all along. Islam hardly condemn any of these atrocities, but they are quick to go Jihad on silly things like Cartoon of prophet Muhammed AND kill innocent people in the process. No I am not attacking Islam, I am merely saying it as it is. The problem of course is that actions like these coming from the Muslims will change [and have changed] how the whole world perceives Islam.

Then you have the issues of what appears to be that[b] most
Terrorist are usually muslims[MOst appear to be, that is not saying there aren't any non-Muslim terrorist] and this in itself alters the view of a lot of people - whether right or wrong - but people now associate Islam with terrorism - Just the same way Catholic churches are associated with Sexual abuse of children.

Until both religion, do something dramatic to shake of these image, the public will forever "perceive" them in that way [again whether right or wrong].

This is a post aimed at all the terrorist apologist like Binna, Lagos boy, Winnret and others. So, as far as official news go this is what have been confirmed [even though some of us have mentioned this all along]

He had links to AlQaeda. He was trained in Yemen and received suicide bombing traning.

The suspect has reportedly told investigators he had links to al-Qaeda and received the explosives in Yemen for a suicide attack, after a month of training.
He is confirmed as a Nigerian/Nigeria origin. [At least his Dad is one]

The father, a top Nigerian banker, warned US authorities last month about 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's extreme views, say officials.

US sources confirm a file was opened, but say the information did not warrant placing the accused on a "no-fly" list.
Oh I remember saying he developed nerves hence why he probably waited till when the plane was about to touch down [Lagos boy you gonna eat your own words now?]

The 32-year-old Dutch filmmaker said when he heard a bang and smelled smoke he felt immediately it was a terrorist attack

Mr Schuringa added that the alleged bomber had not become aggressive after the alleged bomb failed to detonate.

"He was actually a normal person, he was very scared, he had a very frightened look, he wasn't resisting or anything," he told the BBC.
Also Lagos boy was claiming he had fire crackers on him and it wasnt enough to damage the blame blah blah blah. Yet it according to this [see below] he had materials for a military grade explosive.

A preliminary FBI analysis has found that the device allegedly found on Mr Abdulmutallab contained the high explosive PETN, also known as pentaerythritol.
Oh and my favourite part. . . . He is a muslim who appears to have been radicalised.

Nigerians; Please bear in mind that they could have used any Nigerian - once you have the right price.

I am still telling you that IF there is ONE terrorist in the world; Its n other than the US.

Also remember that he did not just wake up to do this, he was spoken to, probably paid and all that - The real question is this; WHO DID??

We have spent year knowing Bin Laden and the so called Terrorist group, where are they?, who are they?

They are simply a currency for the US to encroach any nation or region. The Alqueda thing MUST be kept alive for US to continue taking over nations and mounting military bases all over.
So you support killing of innocents, blowing up of buildings, suicide bombing campaigns? Beheading non-believers and all other acts of terror? You really are a joke.
