9jaRealist: VAT is INDIRECT (consumption) taxation… And I specifically noted WITHHOLDING (direct) taxation, which is what your company/clients deduct.
The percentage of Nigerians subject to withholding taxes are relatively small compared to income earners (including but not limited to self-employed and informal earners) and the size of the economy. Again, it speaks volumes that Nigeria has the LOWEST tax base in all of Africa.
Meanwhile, speaking of VAT, Nigeria has the LOWEST VAT rate in the entire ECOWAS subregion (including dirt poor countries like The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Guniea-Bissau, etc.), and probably one of the (if not the) lowest in all of Africa. As previously pointed out VAT is a CONSUMPTION tax. In effect, if you do not consume you do not pay VAT. However, VAT in Nigeria specifically excludes food, medicines, rent, school fees and other educational expenses, public transportation, agricultural products and expenses, etc. It is also ONLY applicable to businesses generating over N20 million in yearly revenues (meaning that it does NOT apply to products/services bought from small and medium scale businesses - which is probably the MAJORITY of Nigerian businesses). Accordingly, VAT in Nigeria only applies to a handful of goods/services used by most average Nigerians (and probably a MINORITY of the population), and thus bemoaning about VAT charges seems more than a wee bit misplaced (and frankly self-serving) in light of the public services that you expect in return.
If Nigerians are still moaning in 50 years about basic things like water, roads, electricity, healthcare, etc. on Nairaland (or elsewhere), they only have to look at THEMSELVES (and I realize that critical introspection is difficult for most Nigerians) - and not least because tomorrow’s leaders are today’s followers and tomorrow’s elite are today’s masses. Nigeria’s leaders are not from Mars but are Nigerians from Nigeria who emerge from the general population (and often reflect the mores and values of the larger society). A political (or indeed any other) “system” does not exist on its own or in isolation. In fact, a “system” only exists when it is operational - that is, when human beings start running the said “system”. Accordingly, to blame the “system” gravely misses the point. NIGERIANS (the human beings) are the problem, not a nebulous and amorphous “system”. Without this basic starting point, we might as well be pissing against the wind! > So only few Nigerians make calls , send texts or use data. Is vat not charged on calls , texts n data? Electricity is used by all , a beg is vat not charged on electricity? Next thing u I'll say is dat d poor should live in darkness n not also make calls if they can't afford d vat. |

Bar1941: You are the real daft individual here, #ENDSARS was a Nigerian phenomenon not Southwest issue, their was calm in Southeast until people from southwest started questioning such behavior then little unrest started there. Even your dilector made it clear you Ipigs should go after just Tinubu, the audio was heard by everyone. U see d stupidity in ur outlook has always bn d problem with u people, u say #ENDSARS was a Nigerian phenomenon, where in d north did they protest? Y did u people question their not joining the protest? U ve always wanted d southeast to be involved , but u always find a way to look good in d eyes of d govt n blame d southeast at d end of d day . Agabagebe. I ve never bn an advocate for tribal sentimentalism , but sometimes the way people behave just eeks one . There was a riot in lagos, all of a sudden ,some wise ass person, tells u people to say it is southeast dat is trying to destroy lagos n some demented baboons , just pick up d slogan n everybody bn wan turn everywhere upside down if not for some level headed people with insight who found out their ploy. Y is it at d mention of d southeast , the southwest goes berserk ? |

Bar1941: Now we can see the real cowards and betrayals. They showed this attitudes during #ENDSARS protest and here they are again. They will only brag on social media and other news medium but when it's time for action they run away. Their leaders are even worst, they will run away and leave their followers to their fates, example Ojukwu, Nnamdi Kanu and the likes.
Don't be daft. During the endsars protest what was it d Southwest said? That it was igbos that were destroying lagos. Now them dey their own u call them cowards again? U ve a hidden agenda. |

richmond500: one of the thing about Buhari haters is that they fail to see that the country and its government is bigger than twitter. If twitter is used to promote anarchy, it will be shut down One thing u should know is dat I don't hate buhari, but I hate d situation he has put d country in , since his swearing in as d president of Nigeria, he n his band of propaganda spreading lot. If our country was better off than bf he would ve bn my best friend, cus Nigeria comes first. U say d country n its govt, Pls who is Nigeria? We d people, now when Nigerians r suffering , going hungry, being killed n kidnapped, insecure both financial n psychologically n otherwise, n our govt is not helping d matter , is d govt good for the country ? What u don't understand is that twitter recognizes Nigeria as a country irrespective of who ur leader is cus they know , the people r d country. U see dat flag there represents Nigeria not buhari. So if buhari's praises were song on twitter ,but the people were suffering u would ve supported Twitter. U r an enemy of d people n therefore of Nigeria. |

richmond500: are u sure? Twitter don recognize Nigerians? I thought u guys said Nigeria is insignificant. Lolz, Buhari has spoken the language twitter understand The thing with alot of buhari apologists is that they fail to see n understand that Nigeria is greater than buhari, It is because of dumb asses like them ,dat such a person had d opportunity to rule a country like Nigeria, n they r robbing it in Nigerian faces, but no one man is greater than a country , time il tell. |
