Mike,

I think i am in a bit of a fix. But not something out of the ordinary.

So per our argument last week, i gave Taiye and his oga Mathew my car to service. I already bought my 5w30 oil with filter and Toyota ATF IV. One more thing, i wanted them to change the plugs too.

Gave them the car at 2pm and he came back at past 5pm with the car, all done! Further probing reveals he did clean up my air filter and some servicing around the air filter hoses.

Well, the result; my idle speed is now 1000 rpm instead of 700. This has long term implications for my MPG and not also healthy for my car. I intend to send it back to him to rectify. If he doesn't i will have to go back to my normal auto medics. I just hope this is something i won't regret. Cos i might end up spending what i thought i was saving. Sad! undecided lipsrsealed angry sad

On another issue, I can see my P0430 is no longer showing. Will observe this and report back here.
Car Talk / Re: Club-Lexus by Emperoh(m): 5:36pm On Mar 02, 2015
My average on the ES330 is about 19.8 MPG.

But a 65 litre fuel takes me about 330 kilometres.

Wondering what the difference is now

Please endeavour to obey traffic regulations, because they are for the good of the general public including yourself. However, in the event of a palpable or patent display of abuse of power by the law enforcement agents, one should stand his ground and plead his innocence. From the your testimony, you crossed the traffic at amber, next time, be patient until it goes green. If they don't make efforts to enforce these laws, we will still complain. Let us try and give room for human failures while discharging public duties.

I have no qualms paying a fine if i disobey traffic rules. But like Spyder said, it is now clear that this is no civic action or responsibility.
This is walking chaos and no one cares. These boys have manhandled people and abused other. My parents live close to Nowas and my sister works at a hospital close by. I have seen what this looks and i know what i am talking about. Someone needs to call these boys to action.

I am doing an Op-ed article on this to be published in National dailies and popular blogs.
Politics / Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by Emperoh(m): 6:31pm On Feb 25, 2015
Was just in Enugu Thursday and Friday last week. A couple of concerns;

The Nike Lake road, starting from, and passing through Nowas roundabout up till the intersection with Abakpa road is deteriorating at a very fast rate. No one seems to be paying attention to the craters. While the new roads are being fixed, it is important we pay attention to the existing ones. That road is turning into a major exit and entry route into Enugu City especially those coming from the North hence needs adequate attention.

Another issue has to do with the Enugu City traffic marshals. On Friday, i had to run a few errands for my old man. Borrowed my sister's car and set off. I have done all my rounds and was returning home around 3pm. I passed the traffic light in front of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium at amber.

I didn't drive up to 1 km and two marshals on bike blocked my path. One got into the car and said i beat the traffic light. We found a spot in front of railway gate and parked. Argument ensued. I asked them to provide evidence, they said i needed to get to their office and i asked what for? And he said my offence was beating traffic light. We went through a shouting match. But i eventually asked them, who punishes someone without being found guilty by a competent court. I asked if he was a court? What law of the land accuses and punishes without finding one guilty? Again, amber lights symbols world wide represents a signal for motorist to prepare to stop and not stop. If Enugu state changed its laws does that then supercede National Road Safety laws? One could though argue the alleged offence was committed on a state government road but since they didn't realise that, i held on to them, refusing to go anywhere with them and asked them let me go unconditionally since they could not prove i committed any crime and that National laws supersede state laws.

Eventually, one of the riders, calmer though, seeing they were not making any headway with me, pulled me aside and started begging me to 'settle' them with something and showed me an sms indicating that they were given targets as to the number of cars they were to impound and bring back to the office, 'to prove that he came to work today (friday 20.02.2015)'. After much cajoling and begging for me to give them 'fuel money', i gave him N1000.

It felt like i have helped the boy, but my heart couldn't stop thinking that i may have enriched the pockets of a rogue politician who is being compensated for his allegiance to the government of the day. That sms basically confirms my belief that this was no civic responsibility to maintain traffic in the metropolis but to generate revenue for some private pockets. Their behaviour as one would expect should have been that of corrective disposition rather than impound and fine which is the order of the day. I must admit though, that there has been high levels of sanity in terms of driving in Enugu. But this pales into insignificance when put side by side with the pains and wrong accusations these boys mete out to people and the money they fleece off motorist.

If any Enugu state government official reads this page please something needs to happen to bring sanity and order in the work these boys do. It is important what they do but it has to be with some decorum and sanity. You do not recruit boys with no adequate training and an understanding of the road traffic law and their jurisdiction, and thrust them onto the roads to enforce traffic laws. Anambra state started this way and marshals ended up beating up motorists over perceived traffic infractions. They called them 'ndi mpiawa azu'. Thank God for the governor who came in and sanitized the system. Last Christmas, i came to Onitsha on the 28th to pick some good from the Young Shall Grow park and parked along the expressway while my elder brother crossed to the service lane into the park to pick up the goods. After 3 minutes, a traffic marshal walks up to my car, taps on the glass and asks mind to roll it down, i did and he addressed me in the most gentle but stern mien, asking me to leave the express and drive into the service lane and park. Imagine the same scenario in Enugu? Someone will be jumping up at having 'trapped an offender' and jumping into your car. Of course you know the rest.

I am also charging lawyers who live in Enugu. It will take only a court case and judgement to make nonsense of this faceless traffic regime in Enugu. That was all it took for the Park and Pay regime in Abuja to be sent back to where it came from; the pit of hell. If not, what gives the traffic authorities the power to punish people without being convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction? I might not understand the law, but something needs to be done about this.

Good morning Benz addicts,

A friend is keen on buying a 2004 S350. The deal is cool and all seems ok. But the airmatic suspension is fault.
Something to do with the airpump. Checks show that a new pump can be installed for N25k.

But then, how reliable and durable is the Airmatic suspension? IS it a component requiring specific servicing regime and then again, is it a component that will frequently break down?

Any other issues he needs to be conscious about on the S350?

Purchase the plugs, call him and strike a bargain on labour before he begins. Highest you should bargain is 2,000. Tell him its ordinary sparkplug change na, no big deal, afterall its not a major work. Highest 20 minutes. If he doesnt know about 3MZ-FE engine sit in ES330, he'll be glad thinking him don job you. He wont know what hit him by the time it hits him hard below the belt.

Sit down with a chilled drink + chicken and watch how he climb your engine and sweat profusely just to replace ordinary sparkplugs. grin

Inspect them, but i must confess, dont attempt that job, instead give it to that unfortunate mechanic who you've been beefing to suffer the brunt for 4-6hours to change the plugs. tongue

Its one of the hardest tedious jobs to do in that car.

You use type T-IV oil right? Usually its changed at 30,000 miles (toyota/lexus wont admit it)

Ok, now i am worried. My mechanic will chop off my head!!! I guess i will buy and keep the plugs somewhere. 4 hours!!!
I use Toyota Type IV. . . . . haven't done a flush since i got the car. So maybe i start with that.

These sparkplugs can do 100,000 as long as its not fouled. In lexusownersclub.com, most guys says even at 120,000 youre wasting money and time. Rather an average of 140,000mile then change. But lomomike says, 80,000-100,000 chikena! grin

I am already at 127k and i am not so sure it will not have been changed. The Owners Service Manual also says change at 120k miles.
I also saw that the transmission fluid should also be changed at 120k.

Im not too sure, but whats the engine type you have? Is it not 3MZ-FE?

If youre using 5W30, its 5,000miles or 6months which ever comes 1st.

It is 3MZ-FE. . . . .3.3 Litre engine. I bet it will be the same for the 5W20. So i should hit 5000 miles in another 2 weeks or 1 full tank of fuel and a half. (65 litres of fuel give me an average of 330 miles of driving).

What do you think about the plugs?

lomomike:

if you dont know where to get 5W30 oil, just holla at me, i'll get it for you. As for your ATF, i feel you should check to confirm if its Toyota Genuine ATF type T-IV or Toyota WS oil. I can also get them if you dont mind. Really, id recommend To anyone personally to change ATF every 30,000miles. If you can get a very good scanner which can scan more functions such as ECT-s and MAF/MAP.

i think it is the genuine ATF. It is what came with the car from the US. I started using the car at 117k miles. Don't worry i have the oil and gear oil covered. My car recommends 5W20. My scanner is a Creader 123 and scans ECT, SRS and Tranny. Now for 5W20 and 30, do i still do change at 5k miles? Recall the discussion on when to change synthetic oil? Which is said to last longer.

Did you recently work on the car that necessitated your removal of battery terminal or it loosen and came off on its own?

The reason for the drop in RPM is due to the ECU reverting to default however, have a keen observation of the car for a week. On a side note, i'd advice against use of Aftermarket remote starter system. I dont feel confident with them.

The last time i had anything to do with the battery was May 2014, when i just took delivery. The battery that came with it went bad and i bought the current one running on the car. Since then, nothing has taken me anywhere near the battery. I also haven't worked on the car. I plan on serving the car soonest; say in April. I plan to change the plugs and also the gear oil too. I notice slight hesitation when i step down on the gas pedal for more speed. Not sure if i can link this to the plugs though. But the car is just, just slightly sluggish.

How long should i use the gear oil? This will be my 3rd oil change since i bought the car and i haven't changed the gear oil alongside. What are your thoughts? Mileage is currently 127605.
Car Talk / Re: Club-Lexus by Emperoh(m): 10:06am On Feb 10, 2015
So, my ES330 acts up this morning.

When i took delivery of the car in Nigeria, i discovered that an after market remote and theft deterrent system was installed. Mine comes with the capacity to start the vehicle without using the key. Just at the press of a button, the car come to life. However you won't be able to drive the car. Once you step on the brake pedal to engage the auto drive, the engine dies.

So once i am ready for work, before stepping out, i would normally start the car from inside my apartment. This is to allow the car warm up before i come out and drive off.

So this morning, i did my usual routine. But lo, the car won't start. Actually i heard a click sound, meaning it apparently tried to start. Even though i heard the doors unlock (i usually unlock the doors before i start). Well, I eventually came out and did some check and discovered that the positive terminal on the battery head was loose. This is quite unusual. But i fitted it back firmly and the car came to life. Problem solved. and i got set to drive out.

But here's where another issue cropped up. Normally at first start in the morning, You will get an RPM of as high as 1500 before it starts dropping as the engine heats up. It then hovers around 800 RPM once the engine is heated. If you engage the gear and switch on the AC, it drops further to say 600 RPM (engine revs up a bit to sustain the load). This speed is able to move the car when in Drive or Reverse (without stepping on your accelerator).

I really didn't notice anything amiss until i engaged Reverse. No movement! It would normally surge forward or backwards once you leave the brake pedal. But the car stood still. If not that i felt the gear engage i would think my gear has kaput. But on powering the car it moved. My eyes went to my RPM monitor and i saw my needle hovering around 300 RPM (at idle without load). I disengaged the gear and it still didn't move beyond 350.

But the car will only move when 'powered'. Long and short, i just knew my car was underpowered and this is unusual. Because of the battery terminal loosening, my codes were cleared. I drove out of the compound and stopped. Went back into my apartment to get my scanner. On starting the car again, i realised the engine won't hold power. It comes on and goes off. On the 3rd start, i just revved it and sustained it for 10 seconds and then I drove off. Got to the office 45 minutes later and ran a scan; the old O2 sensor P2241 was showing. Nothing new. As a precaution, i didn't use the AC. I kept observing to see what it was about.By the time i got to the office, with the car properly heated, idle speed was back to normal and hovered around 700rpm. I loaded the engine (AC and gear engaged). It revved up and looked normal. Everything seemed ok again.

So i am just wondering, what is this all about? Anyone had any previous ideas and can help?

Let me get something straight. . . . .0420 and 0430 are the same thing but different banks? One is bank 1 and the other Bank 2?

Someone also mentioned the idea of changing my spark plugs.

I will be monitoring to see where this ends.

I have been watching a lot of youtube videos suggesting to wash CAT with lacquer (Thinner) and others with just soapy water. Cant seem to find an obvious working method of getting the CAT working up to threshold. Though I got the fact that the P0420 comes up when the CATs efficiency drops by as low as 5%. That means that the CAT is not entirely bad but has started degrading. The check light is annoying so the need to get it out. I have not seen a better and easy solution like the installation of the spacer. Getting one has been a challenge same as the present economic conditions.

I have also found out from one of the videos that to check that the CAT is still working there should be about 100 degree Fahrenheit difference at the inlet and outlet of the CAT tested with an infrared thermometer. I wish i could have access to one.

So far, the plug defouler/spacer seems the cheapest option for this now.
if this doesn't work, what i will do is to plan to change the offending catalyst. It feels like luxury, that any time i clear my codes and not see xmas lights on my instrument cluster.

Lol, so you're now comfy with that annoying light?

No matter what trick you perform, that light must come up until you find what triggers the fault. Its even worst in Toyota/Lexus/Scion cars because even if pigeon farts, it will come up.

My 2003 HL 2.4L christmas light showed up, three rubbish codes up. 4 nights ago my RX330's own christmas lights showed up VSC and Check light I've not scanned it yet. I don vex park them travel back to Ibadan via bus.

Comfy ke? Not at all, i just kinda overlook them for now until i have found a workable solution. I drove it like that to the East. What i don't know is if this is affecting my fuel economy. I still get about 330 miles from 60 litres of fuel. In fact, a trip from Abuja to Anambra which is about 336 miles was done with about 60 litres of fuel.

In the mean time, i did scan my car this evening and looked at the O2 sensor voltages. See images below

I am having a P0420 on my 2005 Lexus ES330.

I have taken down the catalyst last year, soaked in water cheesy cheesy cheesy cleared the codes and they came back to keep me company again.
Sometimes the codes go off themselves and come back on again, this happens when i do two or three quick stops and driving with the car already heated.

I have since learnt to drive with my xmas lights on. The terrible thing about the Lexus is that the CEL also triggers the TRAC and VSA lights with it. Brand new Cats cost about $550 and i no get that kind money now.

A guy who runs the an Auto centre gave me this procedure; I haven't tried it but off the hand, i sort of believe it won't work.

STart the car and allow it to idle.
Allow it to get to normal operating temperature.
Rev it to 3000 rpm and hold on to it for 3 - 5 mins
Switch off the engine afterwards and clear codes.

My mind tells me they will come back again so i haven't bothered trying.

In the mean time, anyone who is able to figure out where to get Spacers in Abj, please let me know. I am keen to try that out.
By the way, are the Spacers generic; as in, does one fit all cars?

Yes i guess eventually i must. Instead of that i will fit a test pipe with an O2 space fabricated on it as i have read. The hollow section of empty CAT may not be a good thing for the engine and a straight pipe is recommended instead. For now, i want to try the spacer and if it fails, then the straight pipe thingy.

For now, most mechanics i have asked have no idea that a spacer of that dimension exist. Thats because most spark plugs threads are same but the nut are either 19 or 21mm while the O2 sensor has a bigger threading with 22mm. With the new $ exchange rates, the spacer is too expensive to make an orders. I think i can fabricate the spacer by welding a 22mm nut to a fitting pipe and having the other pipe threaded to correspond to the CAT O2 hole. It shouldn't cost more than 1k for labour and parts.

Hmmmm, very instructive. I am coming up with my own 02 sensor and cat below threshold wahala.
Few mins, lemme scan the car.

I noticed this issue on my Highlander in Lagos, but lack of regular free way to do up to 100 to 120km/hr didn't allow me to know the extent of the challenge.
I took it to my mech for wheel balancing and after that felt it was ok.
Not until I travelled long distance and had stretches of free way that I observed the fullness of the issue, once I hit that range of speed and had any cause to apply brakes to slow down, the whole steering keeps vibrating badly.
I can't wait to get back to Lagos for a complete overhaul.

P.S. I bought four brand new tires when I bought the car in October, so I can't blame it on the tires

Your front brake rotors (discs) are warped. that is, an uneven surface.
You may decide to change all 4, but start with the front two and see the impact. the vibration on braking at top speeds comes mainly from the front discs

That said, the IS series is a beautiful car to look at and drive the Is250 feels slightly under-powered, but the IS350 is good, rear seat legroom is small because its an entry level compact sedan, its spring suspension are quite soft tuned for any serious sporty performance and only the IS250 comes in manual tranny. However, I'm more inclined to tall non-sporty things, this is a conscious and deliberate attempt to prevent myself from driving extremely dangerously.

I don't know about Callahan, hope they meet or even surpass manufacturers specification.

If I were in your shoes, I'd take some days off, remove the catalytic converter, soak it in detergent mixed with distilled water bath for say over night, check the O2 sensors and Heater Sensors for efficiency, if they are bad, I'd replace them but I'd install spacers before re-installing the heater or O2 sensor.

I got the rotors from Amazon and as a rule, i stick with products with 5 stars before i buy.

Per the catalyst, i have done this before, but i never left it over night. Say, a few hours. how do you know a bad sensor? and then, any idea on how to do the spacing thingy?
