More

I wouldn't have bought this car if it didn't show me runs and drives
I wouldn't have bought it if were salt water
I wouldn't have bought it if it cost more than $3500
As long as i don't see a bad engine and transmission, i am likely to grapple with issues.
It is for use in Abuja. What i need now is a good BMW tech

What do you guys think? These are all the pictures i have

Car Talk / Re: BMW Owners' Forum by Emperoh(m): 10:03pm On Dec 18, 2013
xerotop:
The E46 xi has the same engine and transmission with d regular rear wheel drive.
Only difference is that the xi drives on shaft which is alil expensive to replace.
The good news: u dont get to replace often cos its does not get broken easily.

The guy who briefed me says it is scarce and costs about N700k.
Now i don't know how true that is!!

xerotop:
I must confess u get mind. Cant venture a flooded BMW.

I hope i don't regret the decision.
But the price was too good to reject.
The fact the owner wanted $6600 initially sought of gave me an idea the repair might have been properly done.
Also, it was not salt water. I for run without looking back cheesy cheesy grin grin
It is 50-50 though

yungboss:
that's like a give away at that price, lets so the cosmetics of the car sir...
I don't know about the possible issues of the xi's, but a flooded car is s doubtful purchase for me...don't you think you may likely have issues much later? You getting it for a client or for yourself...

Bros, i got it for personal use.
This is a huge gamble for me really.

But let me share the pictures and let us assess!

Car Talk / Re: BMW Owners' Forum by Emperoh(m): 1:10pm On Dec 18, 2013
izyoku: Well in all my years of dealing with cars the one set of cars I particularly try to avoid is flooded cars. My reason you can not particularly access a flooded car to know extent of the flood-water damage unlike an accident car u can access very easily and analyse your risk. The major complication I think flooded cars have is the electrical issues and in any case that for me is the most complicated issue any nigerian car owner can gropple with. Our car electricians knowledge is just not there yet except for very few you know their work.
In m assessment you have taken a risk I just hope its a well calculated one but I'd rather a accident car than a flood car. Best of luck bro

Well, let's just say the risk was calculated to an extent.
But in all, i will not buy a car of this record for a client. 2 things made me buy this car.
Of course, one was pricing. I was in search for a 2003 525 and then ran into this.

I ran a VIN check and there was no clear cut explanation of what happened/
I looked at it inside out and saw it has been tidied up even though it seems more cosmetic than real repair.
The seller was asking for $6600 on Copart. I waited for auction and won the bid at half the price quoted. He made me 4 offer and i was not bulging. In the end he awarded me the car. At $3400?! It was a damn good buy! Saved me about $1000 from what i initially budgeted for a car.

I do set that aside in case of any eventualities. Hopefully, i don't get caught up in the new automotive policy stuff.
I will share pictures which will help us better analyse the situation

hello Emperoh,
it depends on the level of damage, sorry is this an e46 or an early e90 model?

E46. . . . . .can see you know this thing wella cos the XI trim, All wheel drive wasn't done with the E36.
Now, are these things i am hearing about the All wheel drive true?

Gee2728:
like you said its a risk...... some have tried and gotten away with it. just make sure u spare a 100k for the unknown.

Are u in my mind?

What are the likely issues i should look forward to?

I will share pictures of the car once i confirm payment to Copart

Finally,

I had a scare. Someone warned me against buying the xi trim; All wheel drive.
He says the gear is quite complicated. Not just that, it is said to be scarce and costs about N700k

Can someone letter me more on this?

Get to posting lads! The Mercedes thread has us beat!

Anyhow, does anyone know the paint code for Imola Red (Imolarot II) or Electric red (Japanrot) my e46 is in Lagos and i'm thinking of doing it up in one of these colours. Before sending it over to abuja.

Its current colour is Steel Blue (Stahlbalu) which is a ridiculous colour. Anyone?

If you love the W203 that much, why don't you go for it. In my experience, and also according to most car enthusiasts that I know, you will never be satisfied with anything outside the car you really love. Even if you do get the latest Beema!or even merc, you will always line for your W203 once you see it pass you by.

As regards maintenance, I don't think there'd be much difference in running the W203 vs the E46 (depending on engine capacity) Just make sure the W203 you get is not a rust bucket as many 203s are wont to...

This life na once o... ;-)

I also love the Beemer. . . . as much if not more.
Why i am being swayed is that physical appeal is stronger for me. So whichever way, i am still within my preference
How is the 3.0 LIter quattro treating you?

Please can someone really tell what is all these fear with turbos?

Nothing is wrong with it. . . . . . . just get a god technician to sort it out once it goes kaput and you are sorted!

yungboss: Emperoh, thought you wanted the e46.
it seems you are falling in love with the bigger brother...I'm surprised at the mileage rollback...one has to really be careful...

Still in shock at the bolded!!

It was the advice here that made me opt for the E39
I also loved the reviews i got online and i understand it was cheaper to keep than the E46(this is the main decider for me).
If i lose this bid, which i am likely to (deliberately cos of this mileage issue) i will try an 04 E60 i just ran into.
Spoke with my BMW auto technician and he insisted the cost of replacement parts won't wear me down like i feared.

Whatever be the case, i am as yet to get over the elegance and appeal of the W203!!
Gives me erections!! I see it in my dreams!!

I was almost wondering if this is the emperor I sabi on Nairaland grin, what kinda guide u need again, knowing very well that the quality of petrol dispensed at our pumps are not same quality as what these oyinbo car makers recommended thus using to judge their MPG.

having said that, you know also that a manual tranny taste for fuel is less than that of an auto drive.....

The M54B30 fuel mpg which is in that car as far as I am concerned could be negligible compared to the younger broda of M54B25 that's in 525i (Manual drive), even though you would get more torque and power.

The most important thing is to keep your car in top shape and timely maintenance is the key... and put at the back of your mind that our kinda fuel here cannot give you the city miles of 18miles per 3,77 liter of fuel.

moreso, when the car lands, check for lots of things like the catalytic converters, it would amaze you that these things are sometimes removed at the ports...

Uncle Kuntash!!!

Ok, another BMW shopper in the house.
I saw this sweet looking E39 last night on Copart. it is a 530i
I had wanted a 525i cos of fuel. . . . .but who can guide me, is he difference in consumption that much?
I know the 525i has a consumption capacity almost that of a 4 cylinder engine.

Click this link to see more on the pics and advice. http://www.copart.com/c2/homeSearch.html?_eventId=getLot&execution=e1s1&lotId=27987983&returnPage=SEARCH_RESULTS

I am also put off by the fact that it was a manual drive. But that is an incentive in a way.

Whatdo you guys think? I won't bid more than $5k for it.

izyoku: ...everytime I read about cost of running a car especially the newer years I get very concerned. When am buying a car am a lost more concerned about buying atleast a relatively new car say 5years. I try to crosscheck previous maintenance history and if am buying from the auction I try to access the type of damage am buying. From my experience the newer the car the lesser the headache and cost of running the cars maximum I try to use mycars 2 - 3yrs I selloff and buy something newer low miles that way me and mechanics have very little business apart from regulat maintenance. If you buy a good car use it well and care for it you will spend less.

Unfortunately not everyone has the means to do 5 years and less cars. But that is not also to say older cars don't last longer.
People look for what they can keep. While i can afford to buy the E60 i know that keeping it in top shape might be a challenge because of the cost of OEM/replacement parts and also normal or regular changes.

I believe the same applies to all other car owners. The key is to keep what you can afford and not just buy cos u can pay the one of cost of the care. BMWs in this case need SPECIAL attention. It is something you don't joke with else you will hate the car.

okay sir, I have not lived with the e39 for long, but a relative owns a 528i, he's had it for up to 3-4years now, he came from the e34 525i. He told me the car is relatively easy to maintain...my Mech is good with BMWs, he had a e34 535i, which he complained was a gas guzzler (though his was old). He now drives an e36 320i. The e39 having a vanos engine would way be economical compared to the e34.
call this number: 08030976735, crown autos. A specialist in BMWs. He'll give you a breakdown of running cost of the car, just tell him a friend gave you his number, a friend working in old GRA, who owns a coupe e46.....the e46 is very good on gas by my judgment. Mine is a smaller 2.5l engine, 323ci.

Thank you so much for the information. I guess my decision is made. I will speak to the guy and then firm things up.

Barring any new discovery I think the E39 is it. I will just stick to the 525i or 525iT. Love them wagons. grin

Will also do more research. I kept wishing the E60 was any cheaper. Would have been an easy decision since I LOVE the car.
Car Talk / Re: BMW Owners' Forum by Emperoh(m): 10:09pm On Nov 13, 2013
yungboss:
the e46 has the same engine as the e39, difference would bein the suspension system. The e39 has same aluminum components as the e46, but the set up is similar to its older brother's, the e34. Parts are relatively cheap too. It is weightier than the e46, and the latter feels sportier and more nimble. I have driven extensively the e39 528i

I didn't initially see those comments above. My internet connectivity this evening has been wanking.
Now, you have addressed my fears. But i am basically struggling with what is practical, easy on the pocket to an average 9-5 worker with small sized family so that i won't have heart attack any time the car acts up. I know owning one requires the owner to at least have some above average knowledge of the car. But i won't do the E60 even if i can afford to buy it just because the cost of keeping it is high.

I am also just planning of sticking with 525 or 325i for fuel economy. Overall, i can only depend on practical information from users like you to be guided properly.

that's great, I plan to do a swap 323/330 swap, but the issue is one is an M52 engine and the other is an M54. My mech tells me it is possible but I'm doubtful of a seamless state of the car thereafter...a 328i swap is easy, just flash or change the ECU, same gearbox, same wiring cos they are same Generation...you get an instant +20hp and +25lb-ft gain. Your spec is exactly mine, 323ci 18". The 323ci is fast though, ample power for the highway.
the cost here in PH is about N130,000.00. Paid for it but haven't done it yet.

Still waiting on your opinion about my inquests above!

E39 is one sweet ride that u shld nt miss. Very quiet, sleek, smooth, fuel efficient, rugged and balance ride.
Its parts areso cheap and infact far more cheap than the E46.
When that idles, u will not hear a sound.
The 2003 is near perfection since all d teething probs have been taken care of. Its almost the end of dat generation.

Only downsides are, u get to replace arms often cos of d weight of d car.even d arms are cheap to buy.
Also due to bad roads and potholes, ur head lights becomes shaky and faces downwards in d night. Dats also cheap to fix.
Everything on that car is affordable. U will surely enjoy it.

Uncle God bless you. I was a little wary about this cos of likely issues.
I am also conscious of maintenance cost. I was torn between the E46, X3 and C Class.
The C class was winning but i felt i haven't explored well until something asked me to check out the E39.
I am not SOOO passionate about the BMW but care enough to own one.

From what i get from you, i can close my eyes and say that i have found a ride that will not hurt my pocket and will also mean less visits to a repair workshops.

Aside the issues mentioned above, any specific issue i should pay attention to?
