6:1. "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
6:2. "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
6:3. "But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
6:4. "that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

*MESSAGE:*

The natural man loves recognition and reward for good deeds. Our text today teaches about the need, guidelines and reward for good deeds. In verses 1-4, Jesus shows his approval for good deeds but teaches that there should be an intentional examination of the heart to find the motive behind doing good deeds. The motive should not be to gain men's praise because that is hypocrisy. Jesus also taught that there are two types of rewards for good deeds. Men can quickly reward good deeds with applause because they do not see the heart. However, the Bible states in verse 2 that those who do good deeds to be praised by men have already received their reward already. On the other hand, God who sees the motive, examines and rewards openly, even when the good deed is done secretly. I remember when we wrote off a debt owed by a church secretly and a long-standing sickness which our daughter suffered from, from birth, and which defied all medications, disappeared till date, more than twenty years ago!

Beloved, there are many people around you who need a touch of love and kindness in their lives. Find a good deed to do for someone around you today without their knowledge. Do good deeds as a habit, without seeking rewards or the applause of men. _Today's passage teaches that God who sees in secret will reward you openly._

5:44. "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
5:45. "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
5:46. "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
5:47. "And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more [than others?] Do not even the tax collectors do so?
5:48. "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

THE MESSAGE:

Science and philosophy believe in the action-reaction principle which states that an action is simply a force applied on an object which generates a resulting reaction. This is the principle that the natural man applies in loving only those who love him and hating those who hate him. Jesus teaches that the lifestyle of heaven differs very much from this principle. In verses 43-44, He teaches us to love and pray for those who hate and persecute us. The reason for this injunction is that love for the unlovable shows that we are different (verse 46b). Again, it shows the nature of God who also gives His blessings to undeserving wicked men (verse 45), and attracts heavenly reward (verse 46) and perfection (verse 48). A man once forcefully took over land belonging to his Christian relatives and threatened openly to use charms to kill anyone who resisted him. Shortly after, he died and the villagers mocked him and said God had revenged the helpless Christians. However, the same Christian relatives were led by God to contribute funds to train the dead man's children and also provide for his widow yearly. This unusual response left the villagers amazed.

As God's child, have you been retaliating when you are maltreated by family members, office mates, business associates, etc.? Jesus is calling you to a different lifestyle-for you are not of this world. He expects you to radiate His nature as a citizen of heaven so that your actions will match your message of eternal life.

TOPIC: HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM SIN
READ: MATTHEW 1:16-25 (NKJV)

1:16. And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
1:17. So all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon [are] fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ [are] fourteen generations.
1:18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
1:19. Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man,] and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
1:20. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
1:21. "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
1:22. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
1:23. "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
1:24. Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,
1:25. and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

THE MESSAGE:

The birth and ministry of Jesus Christ were prophesied in the Scriptures. It was also announced by Angel Gabriel during his visitation to Mary. His birth was supernatural - being born by a virgin through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, was betrothed to Mary. They had a chaste engagement/betrothal relationship which should be emulated by present day intending couples. However, before they came together, Mary became pregnant. Joseph became worried and considered terminating their engagement secretly, to avoid public disgrace for Mary. This is an uncommon self-control!However, God in his omniscient nature, intervened through an angel to explain the divine purpose for Mary to give birth to the Saviour.

Today we remember St. Joseph of Nazareth in the Church calendar. The qualities of self-control during engagement, amidst perplexing situations, being discreet, consideration for others, etc., in the life of Joseph, are worthy of emulation. He was also righteous, God-fearing, obedient and able to decipher when God was speaking to him, so God used him to fulfil divine purpose in Jesus Christ. To every Christian, obedience to God's word is necessary if we must fulfil divine mandate. However, it is impossible to exhibit this quality if one has not allowed Jesus to save him from his sins. Jesus completed the deal about salvation and said, "It is finished" Are you saved from your sins?

PRAYER: Father, please give us listening ears and obedient hearts in our relationship with You.
