19:25. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
19:26. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!"
19:27. Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own [home.]
19:28. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!"
19:29. Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put [it] on hyssop, and put [it] to His mouth.
19:30. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
19:31. Therefore, because it was the Preparation [Day,] that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away.
19:32. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.
19:33. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
19:34. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
19:35. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
19:36. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not [one] of His bones shall be broken."
19:37. And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

THE MESSAGE:

The passage of today contains three of the seven words of Christ on the Cross which the Church usually commemorates as a three-hour service on Good Friday. These are: the 3rd word, “Woman, behold your son”, “behold your mother” (verses 26-27); the 5th word, “I thirst” (verse 28), and the 6th word, “It is finished" (verse 30). These words of Christ on the cross are of great lessons to every believer because the word of Christ is the Scripture, for Christ is the Word of God made flesh. In this, our first lesson is the lessons of love and care for one another. The second is that we all should be thirsty for God's word and His righteousness, while the third is that the price for our salvation has been fully paid for and its work finished. Christ paid the debt He didn't owe that we may be free from the debt we owe. This is the greatest blessing.

Christ's life, sufferings and death for the salvation of mankind is the fulfilment of Scripture and following in the steps of Christ, our lives as believers should also be patterned to fulfill the Scripture which involves doing the will and purposes of God. We must say no to any thought, word or action that is against the fulfilment of Scripture.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, may Your Spirit direct my life to fulfil the Scripture daily, Amen!

19:18. where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.
19:19. Now Pilate wrote a title and put [it] on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

*MESSAGE:*

The climax of Christ's most painful sacrifice for mankind is his crucifixion on the Cross. Jesus was hanged and crucified between two justly condemned criminals though He was not guilty of any wrong doing himself. Even Pilate, having earlier examined Jesus, observed that there was no evidence of any wrong nor were there lawful witnesses against him, rightly declared him guiltless and was ready to acquit Jesus but for the forceful demand of the Jewish leadershipand Pilate's weak moral strength. Christ was unjustly crucified on our behalf to bring us eternal justification that gives us a righteous standing before God. We could not have been righteous before God otherwise.

Christ's righteousness is seamless and total, symbolised by his seamless dress which teaches us the lesson that like him, our righteousness should not be a “cut and join" type, but a consistent, unbroken and wholesome type that reveals the grace of God in the life of the believer. God expects us to wear a seamless dress of Christ's righteousness as we walk with Him and work for Him.

19:2. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put [it] on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.
19:3. Then they said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with their hands.
19:4. Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him."
19:5. Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And [Pilate] said to them, "Behold the Man!"
19:6. Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify [Him,] crucify [Him!"] Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify [Him,] for I find no fault in Him."

19:12. From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."
19:13. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called [The] Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
19:14. Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
19:15. But they cried out, "Away with [Him,] away with [Him!] Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!"
19:16. Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led [Him] away.

*MESSAGE:*

In our text, Pilate scourged and chastised Jesus, to please the Jews who were insistent on doing injustice to a just Saviour. The soldiers made a piercing crown of thorns and placed it as a mock-crown on the head of Jesus. They also put on him a humiliating purple robe to debase his kingship. All these were done to make mockery of the acclaimed King of the Jews who they needed but would not accept. However, in their ignorance, these soldiers were only fulfilling prophecy that would be for the healing and deliverance of all who would believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. (Isa. 53:5). This is the price Christ paid for our healing and deliverance.

Note that what Jesus suffered is not only for our physical healing, but for our spiritual healing too. It is not only for the healing of individual believers, but equally for the healing of families, communities and nations who turn to Him, and indeed everything that is sick including vocations and businesses. You must remember that this sacrificial provision in Christ is for your total healing from every sickness, and deliverance from every thorn and robe of mockery in your life and family. This great price was also paid for your spiritual healing and deliverance (salvation), if you are not yet saved. It takes active and living faith to receive this provision for our benefit.

TOPIC: PEACEFUL TRANSITION
READ: ACTS 1:15-26 (NKJV)

1:15. And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said,
1:16. "Men [and] brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;
1:17. "for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry."
1:18. (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.
1:19. And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
1:20. "For it is written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it'; and, 'Let another take his office.'
1:21. "Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
1:22. "beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection."
1:23. And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
1:24. And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen
1:25. "to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place."
1:26. And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

THE MESSAGE:

Today marks St. Matthias Day and also the Anniversary of the Inauguration of The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) in 1979. Matthias was chosen peacefully to replace Judas Iscariot who lost his opportunity. According to the prophecy in Psalmn 109:8, "And let another take his office." Only two persons were nominated to fill the vacancy. The qualification to occupy the office was very simple: “... men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us...." (verses 21-22). Through casting of lots, Matthias was chosen.

As we commemorate the official inauguration of the Church of Nigeria today, God is teaching us through the Apostle that it is possible to have free and fair elections/selections to positions in our Church and nation, devoid of sentiment and partiality. Electoral practices should be free and fair, and things should be allowed to follow due processes, ensuring everyone will be satisfied after the whole exercise. We shall not give up until we reach that Promised Land.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please teach us to manage our elections peacefully to the satisfaction of all concerned in Jesus' name. Amen!
