*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* MONDAY, 26TH AUGUST, 2024 *THEME:* GOD'S PREVAILING MERCIES

*TEXT:* GENESIS 38: 1-30 _*(NKJV)*_

38:1. It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name [was] Hirah.
38:2. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name [was] Shua, and he married her and went in to her.
38:3. So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.
38:4. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
38:5. And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
38:6. Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name [was] Tamar.
38:7. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD killed him.
38:8. And Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother."
38:9. But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother.
38:10. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD; therefore He killed him also.
38:11. Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house till my son Shelah is grown." For he said, "Lest he also die like his brothers." And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
38:12. Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
38:13. And it was told Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."
38:14. So she took off her widow's garments, covered [herself] with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which [was] on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.
38:15. When Judah saw her, he thought she [was] a harlot, because she had covered her face.
38:16. Then he turned to her by the way, and said, "Please let me come in to you"; for he did not know that she [was] his daughter-in-law. So she said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"
38:17. And he said, "I will send a young goat from the flock." So she said, "Will you give [me] a pledge till you send [it?"]
38:18. Then he said, "What pledge shall I give you?" So she said, "Your signet and cord, and your staff that [is] in your hand." Then he gave [them] to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.
38:19. So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.
38:20. And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive [his] pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.
38:21. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, "Where is the harlot who [was] openly by the roadside?" And they said, "There was no harlot in this [place."]
38:22. So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this [place."]
38:23. Then Judah said, "Let her take [them] for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her."
38:24. And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she [is] with child by harlotry." So Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned!"
38:25. When she [was] brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man to whom these belong, I [am] with child." And she said, "Please determine whose these [are -- the] signet and cord, and staff."
38:26. So Judah acknowledged [them] and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again.
38:27. Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins [were] in her womb.
38:28. And so it was, when she was giving birth, that [the one] put out [his] hand; and the midwife took a scarlet [thread] and bound it on his hand, saying, "This one came out first."
38:29. Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, "How did you break through? [This] breach [be] upon you!" Therefore his name was called Perez.
38:30. Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet [thread] on his hand. And his name was called Zerah.

*MESSAGE:*

Judah separated himself from his brothers and went down to be unequally yoked with an Adullamite. This union influenced Judah's life negatively but for the mercies of God! His marriage with a woman from Canaan was a consequence of his friendship with Hirah, the Adullamite. Did Judah enjoy his marriage? Whether or not he did was not disclosed to us but his keen interest in the marriage of his first born son, Er (v.6) could suggest guidance born out ofhard experience of a wearied soul (Gen.27: 46). Judah's first born son, Er, seems to have been the chosen one in Judah's family, through whom the Messiah was intended to come. Tamar his widow bore a son to Judah whose name (Pharez) appears with hers (Thamar) in the line of Christ (Matt. 1: 3).

All we can say of God's choice of Judah who treaded the path of unbelievers and Er whom before God was wicked (v.7) is this "He has not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities "(Psa. 103:10). You might have missed it already in several crossroads of life but if today you will arise in repentance and ask God for mercy, His mercy will prevail over you.

*PRAYER:*
God my Father, let Your mercy prevail over my life. *Amen*

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY*
God Says:

_"Your sadness last for a night, but joy will come in the morning."_ *Psalm 30: 5*

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 21ST AUGUST, 2024

*THEME:* MOVE ON! GET MOVING!

*TEXT:* GENESIS 35: 16-29 *(NKJV)*

35:16. Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored [in childbirth,] and she had hard labor.
35:17. Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear; you will have this son also."
35:18. And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
35:19. So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that [is,] Bethlehem).
35:20. And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which [is] the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
35:21. Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
35:22. And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard [about it.] Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
35:23. the sons of Leah [were] Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
35:24. the sons of Rachel [were] Joseph and Benjamin;
35:25. the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant, [were] Dan and Naphtali;
35:26. and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant, [were] Gad and Asher. These [were] the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
35:27. Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba (that [is,] Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt.
35:28. Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
35:29. So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, [being] old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

*MESSAGE:*

Christian maturity is to truly declare: "We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Cor.4:. God had told Jacob to return unto the land of his fathers, promising to be with him (Gen. 31:3). On his journey back home, his beloved wife, Rachel, had a hard labour and died. Jacob did not blame it on the innocent baby as Rachel did while her soul was departing, neither did he question God who promised to be with him as he journeyed home. He knew that God can be with a man and yet permit that he walk through the valley of the shadow of death (Psa.23: 4).

After the burial of Rachel, Israel moved on. He never allowed grief to make him lose focus of his journey. He journeyed! God is saying, “Move on!” Get moving! It's not time to apportion blames. Jacob eventually made it home. What are your grievances? What misfortune has befallen you that has sapped you of the courage to move on? The Lord Jesus endured the cross by focusing on the joy that was set before him. Keep your gaze on Him (Heb.12: 2). Forget the past and move on!

*PRAYER:*
Lord, give me the courage to move on and not wander from Your pathway. _*Amen*_

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY*
God Says:

_"If two of you agree in prayer, I will do whatever you ask."_ *Matthew 18: 19*
