✝️📗DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL
Date: 2024-Sept 11

✝️ TOPIC: SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS

✝️📖TEXT: Genesis 49: 1-32(NKJV)
49:1. And Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:
49:2. "Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father.
49:3. "Reuben, you are my firstborn, My might and the beginning of my strength, The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
49:4. Unstable as water, you shall not excel, Because you went up to your father's bed; Then you defiled [it -- He] went up to my couch.
49:5. "Simeon and Levi [are] brothers; Instruments of cruelty [are in] their dwelling place.
49:6. Let not my soul enter their council; Let not my honor be united to their assembly; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox.
49:7. Cursed [be] their anger, for [it is] fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob And scatter them in Israel.
49:8. "Judah, you [are he] whom your brothers shall praise; Your hand [shall be] on the neck of your enemies; Your father's children shall bow down before you.
49:9. Judah [is] a lion's whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
49:10. The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him [shall be] the obedience of the people.
49:11. Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey's colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes.
49:12. His eyes [are] darker than wine, And his teeth whiter than milk.
49:13. "Zebulun shall dwell by the haven of the sea; He [shall become] a haven for ships, And his border shall adjoin Sidon.
49:14. "Issachar is a strong donkey, Lying down between two burdens;
49:15. He saw that rest [was] good, And that the land [was] pleasant; He bowed his shoulder to bear [a burden,] And became a band of slaves.
49:16. "Dan shall judge his people As one of the tribes of Israel.
49:17. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, A viper by the path, That bites the horse's heels So that its rider shall fall backward.
49:18. I have waited for your salvation, O LORD!
49:19. "Gad, a troop shall tramp upon him, But he shall triumph at last.
49:20. "Bread from Asher [shall be] rich, And he shall yield royal dainties.
49:21. "Naphtali [is] a deer let loose; He uses beautiful words.
49:22. "Joseph [is] a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a well; His branches run over the wall.
49:23. The archers have bitterly grieved him, Shot [at him] and hated him.
49:24. But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the Mighty [God] of Jacob (From there [is] the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),
49:25. By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who will bless you [With] blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
49:26. The blessings of your father Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors, Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills. They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.
49:27. "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; In the morning he shall devour the prey, And at night he shall divide the spoil."
49:28. All these [are] the twelve tribes of Israel, and this [is] what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.
49:29. Then he charged them and said to them: "I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that [is] in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
49:30. "in the cave that [is] in the field of Machpelah, which [is] before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place.
49:31. "There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah.
49:32. "The field and the cave that [is] there [was]purchased by the sons of heth

✝️📜STUDY:Jacob's blessings upon his sons were fulfilled centuries later, some even pointing to the "last days." Many of them are similar to those by Moses in Deuteronomy 33: 1-29. The proclamation on Reuben in verses 3 to 4 was because of the incest he committed, but this was reversed by Moses(Gen.35: 22: Deut. 33: 6). Simeon and Levi were "scattered in Israel" (vv.5-7) That of Levi became a blessing upon receiving the priesthood (Deut. 33:8 11;Num. 25:1-13). Simeon was not named in Moses prayer, but the tribe was later scattered" within Judah, and thus enjoyed the associated blessings (Josh. 19:2-9) Judah was blessed with an enduring kingship, which was fulfilled in David, and ultimately in Christ (v.10: 1 Chron.17:10-14:Luke 1:31-33). May we learn to bless our children and wards and intercede for them! When they stray like the prodigal child, may we forgive and bless. them, and not curse (1 Pet, 3:9). In verses 28 to 33, we see specific instructions from Jacob concerning his burial. Jacob did not allow his life of ease in Egypt to overshadow his vision of Canaan (Gen. 48: 3-4). We should not allow transient pleasures of life to overshadow the blessedness of eternal life.

✝️🙏 Prayer:Dear Lord, please enable me always to bless.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* FRIDAY, 6TH SEPTEMBER, 2024 *THEME:* GIVE US BREAD

*TEXT:* GENESIS 47: 7-19 *(NKJV)*

47:7. Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
47:8. Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How old [are] you?"
47:9. And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage [are] one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage."
47:10. So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.
47:11. And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
47:12. Then Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with bread, according to the number in [their] families.
47:13. Now [there was] no bread in all the land; for the famine [was] very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine.
47:14. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.
47:15. So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed."
47:16. Then Joseph said, "Give your livestock, and I will give you [bread] for your livestock, if the money is gone."
47:17. So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread [in exchange] for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he fed them with bread [in exchange] for all their livestock that year.
47:18. When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands.
47:19. "Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give [us] seed, that we may live and not die, that the land may not be desolate."

*MESSAGE:*

During the Nigerian Civil war, we were displaced from home and spent nearly two years in refugee camps. Many children died of kwashiorkor and other malnutrition-related diseases. We survived by subsistence farming and occasional food rations from the World Council of Churches, the Caritas, etc. Similarly, the famine described in our text was very severe (v.13), and many would have perished. But Joseph managed the situation with skill and the fear of God. The “Strategic Food Reserves” which were accumulated during the years of plenty were sold to the people (Gen. 41: 47-49; v.14). When their money was used up, they paid with their livestock, lands and even themselves (vv. 17, 20). Unlike our experience during the Civil war when some relief materials were illegally diverted, there was no report against Joseph for corruption. Rather, he brought everything realised to Pharaoh's palace.

Today, many people are displaced because of famine, climate change, war, poor economic policies, etc. Some are unemployed or under-employed. There are also challenges at the personal, family, community or national levels. Whatever the case, we can trust God to “give us this day our daily bread” and also meet our every need (Matt. 6: 11; Phil. 4: 19).

*PRAYER:*
O Lord, please help those suffering the effects of famine, war and natural disasters, _*Amen.*_

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY*
God Says:

_"You can rest in My love, for I have power to save you."_ *Zephaniah 3: 17*

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* THURSDAY, 5TH SEPTEMBER, 2024 *THEME:* SETTLING IN GOSHEN

*TEXT:* GENESIS 47: 1-6 *(NKJV)*

47:1. Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, and said, "My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they [are] in the land of Goshen."
47:2. And he took five men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
47:3. Then said to his brothers, "What [is] your occupation?" And they said to Pharaoh, "Your servants [are] shepherds, both we [and] also our fathers."
47:4. And they said to Pharaoh, "We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, for the famine [is] severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."
47:5. Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, "Your father and your brothers have come to you.
47:6. "The land of Egypt [is] before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know [any] competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock."

*MESSAGE:*

Notice from verse 4 that the Israelites intended to live in Goshen “for a while” to survive the remaining 5 years of famine (see also Gen. 45: 6). However, they spent 430 years to fulfil God's purpose (Gen. 15: 13; Exo.12: 40-41). Goshen was among the best of Egypt, was well watered;suitable for livestock farming, and away from the native Egyptians (Gen.46: 32-34). It also became a place of refuge and deliverance from God's wrath (Exo. 9: 26; 10: 23; 12: 23, 30). In the same way, Christ is our refuge today, anyone who puts his trust in Him shall not be put to shame (1 Pet.2: 6).

Moving and settling Jacob's family in Goshen required elaborate preparations. First, Jacob sent Judah ahead to point the way (Gen. 46: 28). Then Joseph made at least three visits to Pharaoh to obtain the required approval, namely: Joseph went alone, then with 5 of his brothers, then with Jacob his father (vv. 1, 2, 7). This is in addition to Pharaoh's earlier invitation in Genesis 45: 16- 19). Joseph did not just assume that his relatives were welcome considering that he was next in command to Pharaoh. Let us learn to follow all due processes in obtaining our rights and privileges from the authorities.

*PRAYER:*
O Lord, make our land a Goshen today, _*Amen.*_

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 4TH SEPTEMBER, 2024 *THEME:* YOU ARE STILL ALIVE!

*TEXT:* GENESIS 46: 28-34 *(NKJV)*

46:28. Then he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point out before him [the way] to Goshen. And they came to the land of Goshen.
46:29. So Joseph made ready his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.
46:30. And Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you [are] still alive."
46:31. Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, 'My brothers and those of my father's house, who [were] in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
46:32. 'And the men [are] shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.'
46:33. "So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, 'What is your occupation?'
46:34. "that you shall say, 'Your servants' occupation has been with livestock from our youth even till now, both we [and] also our fathers,' that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd [is] an abomination to the Egyptians."

*MESSAGE:*

What a joy in Jacob's heart when he saw Joseph after some 22 years! Joseph had been sold as a slave to Egypt when he was about 17 years (Gen. 37: 2), but his brothers lied that he had been killed by a wild animal (Gen.37: 28, 33). By some curious twist of events, Joseph became the Prime Minister of Egypt at the age of 30 (Gen. 41: 39-41, 46). In Genesis 50: 20, Joseph testified that all these happened as ordained by God. What an outpour of emotions by both Joseph and Jacob at such a wonderful reunion (vv. 29-30). Jacob now felt fulfilled and ready to die, having seen his beloved son alive, healthy and elevated, after being presumed dead (See Gen 41: 46, 53; 45: 11).

Do you have a loved one declared “missing” due to some unpleasant events such as war, kidnap, etc.? Or do you have an expectation that has lingered for many years unfulfilled, or delayed answers to prayers? Keep believing and trusting God! Your expectations shall not be cut off (Psa. 62: 5, Prov. 24: 14). One day, you will shout for joy that God has answered your prayers!

*PRAYER:*
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him" *(Psalm 42: 11).*

*DATE:* TUESDAY, 3RD SEPTEMBER, 2024 *THEME:* A QUIVER FULL OF CHILDREN

*TEXT:* GENESIS 46: 8-27 *(NKJV)*

46:8. Now these [were] the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: Reuben [was] Jacob's firstborn.
46:9. The sons of Reuben [were] Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
46:10. The sons of Simeon [were] Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman.
46:11. The sons of Levi [were] Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
46:12. The sons of Judah [were] Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
46:13. The sons of Issachar [were] Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron.
46:14. The sons of Zebulun [were] Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
46:15. These [were] the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, [were] thirty-three.
46:16. The sons of Gad [were] Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
46:17. The sons of Asher [were] Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. And the sons of Beriah [were] Heber and Malchiel.
46:18. These [were] the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons.
46:19. The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife, [were] Joseph and Benjamin.
46:20. And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him.
46:21. The sons of Benjamin [were] Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
46:22. These [were] the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons in all.
46:23. The son of Dan [was] Hushim.
46:24. The sons of Naphtali [were] Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
46:25. These [were] the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: seven persons in all.
46:26. All the persons who went with Jacob to Egypt, who came from his body, besides Jacob's sons' wives, [were] sixty-six persons in all.
46:27. And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt [were] two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.

*MESSAGE:*

Psalm 127: 3-5 indicates that children are blessings from God which should make every parent grateful. In only two generations, Jacob was blessed with 70 descendants (vv.26, 27). Though Leah was not Jacob's favourite wife, God gave her 6 sons and 1 daughter (Gen. 30: 20-21). From them, we have 33 descendants. Her maid Zilpah had 16, while Rachel and her maid, Bilhah, had 14 and 7 respectively. Thus, even when the powers that be do not like you or favour you, God can still fulfil His purpose for your lfe as you trust Him.

In our text, all the males were mentioned by name. Please begin today to keep good and accurate records of your family line! Trace them as far as possible from both the maternal and paternal sides. Jacob's only daughter, Dinah, was mentioned by name (v.15); while Joseph's wife, Asenath, was the only wife mentioned by name (v.20). The reference to Simeon's son, Shaul, as “the son of a Canaanite woman” gives a sense of dispproval (v.10). Endeavour to marry from among the people of God to avoid what Paul calls “being unequally yoked” (2 Cor. 6: 14).

*PRAYER:*
Oh God, let Your good purposes for my life come to pass in Jesus Name, _*Amen.*_

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY*
God Says:

_"You can look forward to the new heaven and earth that I have promised."_ *2 Peter 3: 13*
