✝️TOPIC: FAILURE TO RAISE GODLY CHILDREN

✝️📖TEXT: 1 Samuel 8: 1-5(NKJV)
8:1. Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel.
8:2. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; [they were] judges in Beersheba.
8:3. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
8:4. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,
8:5. and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

✝️📜 STUDY: One of the purposes of Christian marriage is to raise godly children (Mal.2: 15a). However, this important command from God has become a big challenge, especially in this age where peer pressure, technology, bad leaders and harsh economies take a toll on families. Some great men of God and Christians have failed to raise godly children. Prophet Samuel in today's text had sons who took bribes and perverted justice. This led Israel to ask for a king like other nations, which offended God and Samuel. This shows that godliness is not inherited but intentionally inculcated into children. The grave consequences of failure to do this are enormous. For example, the rejection of Samuel's children by Israel led to the termination of God's approved leadership style for His people. Again, the bad behaviour of Eli's children led to the termination of the priesthood in his lineage and the death ofhis children (1Sam.2: 27-36). God cannot compromise His standard in this command, so parents and leaders should rise to this challenge to raise godly children. Note that God testified that Abraham would train his household in righteousness (Gen. 18: 19) and Lois trained Eunice who also inculcated godliness in Timothy (2 Tim. 1: 5). Beloved, what are the testimonies of your own children? Are they like Samuel's children or Eunice's son, Timothy? Do all you can in spite of busy schedules and challenges, to raise godly children for God.

✝️🙏 PRAYER: Lordhelp me to become more committedto inculcate godliness in the lives of the younger generation in Jesus name.

✝️TOPIC: TRUSTING IN THE LORD

✝️📖TEXT: Psalm 125: 1-5(NKJV)
125:1. A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in the LORD [Are] like Mount Zion, [Which] cannot be moved, [but] abides forever.
125:2. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the LORD surrounds His people From this time forth and forever.
125:3. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest On the land allotted to the righteous, Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity.
125:4. Do good, O LORD, to [those who are] good, And to [those who are] upright in their hearts.
125:5. As for such as turn aside to their crooked ways, The LORD shall lead them away With the workers of iniquity. Peace [be] upon Israel!

✝️📜 STUDY: People trust in many things in the world such as money, power, personalities, charm or even certificates. Historically, these can fail for we see the rich die from terminal diseases in well-equipped hospitals, or through accidents and activities ofbandits in spite of their massive wealth. Our text enjoins us to trust the Lord as a life-long process of believing and acting on His word for everything. This will help us to please Him and qualify for His promised blessings. The advantages of trusting in the Lord are enormous. Our text says such persons who trust in God are like Mount Zion which cannot be moved. By implication, they are stable in faith amidst storms with the peace of God in their hearts. They also abide in God for ever. God gives them protection by surrounding them with His presence and makes them inaccessible to enemies. God will not allow the devices of the wicked to afflict the righteous to an unbearable extent, lest they slip off (v.3). Note that the ways of both the righteous and crooked are known to the Lord and He rewards each man according to his work. Beloved, let us therefore be upright in all we do, for we shall reap God's gracious reward in due course.

✝️🙏 PRAYER : PRAYER: Lord deliver us from the attraction of the flesh and everything that prevents us from trusting in you.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* SATURDAY, 5TH OCTOBER, 2024 *THEME:* EBENEZER: THUS FAR THE LORD HAS HELPED US

*TEXT:* 1 SAMUEL 7: 7-17 *(NKJV)*

7:7. Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard [of it,] they were afraid of the Philistines.
7:8. So the children of Israel said to Samuel, "Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines."
7:9. And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered [it as] a whole burnt offering to the LORD. Then Samuel cried out to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him.
7:10. Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the LORD thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel.
7:11. And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and drove them back as far as below Beth Car.
7:12. Then Samuel took a stone and set [it] up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us."
7:13. So the Philistines were subdued, and they did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
7:14. Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
7:15. And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
7:16. He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places.
7:17. But he always returned to Ramah, for his home [was] there. There he judged Israel, and there he built an altar to the LORD.

*MESSAGE:*

A sinful lifestyle resulting from disobedience to God's word has many negative consequences. Israel lived sinful lives and were constantly defeated by enemies. The Philistines even came to attack them while they were praying at Mizpah. This shows that the devil can attack anytime, so watch and pray. Samuel's intercession for Israel brought great victory -God unleashed thunder and confusion upon the Philistines and they were defeated. Israel appreciated God's intervention and raised an altar which they named Ebenezer (thus far the Lord has helped us). Samuel as a righteous and faithful man was heard when he cried to God. He was used in his generation as an instrument to subdue the Philistines and recover Israeli cities in their custody. This shows that God can use only one 'prepared' man in a family, tribe, office or nation to bring down His mighty hand of deliverance. So don't follow the crowd to do evil for they will not be able to deliver in the day of trouble.

Can God rely on you in this sinful generation to stand alone for Him? What spiritual and physical impact are you making where God has placed you? Do you have a strong altar of prayer that heaven responds to when you call? Emulate Samuel's example to bring down peace, prosperity and restoration (vv. 13-17).

*PRAYER POINT:*
Repent and rededicate your life to God. Thank Him for His deliverances from the challenges in your life.

*QUOTE FOR THE DAY*

_"I am the everlasting God."_ *Psalm 90: 2*

✝️TOPIC: FULFILMENT OF GOD'S WORD

✝️📖TEXT: 1 Samuel 4: 11-22(NKJV)
4:11. Also the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
4:12. Then a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line the same day, and came to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.
4:13. Now when he came, there was Eli, sitting on a seat by the wayside watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told [it,] all the city cried out.
4:14. When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, "What [does] the sound of this tumult [mean?"] And the man came quickly and told Eli.
4:15. Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were so dim that he could not see.
4:16. Then the man said to Eli, "I [am] he who came from the battle. And I fled today from the battle line." And he said, "What happened, my son?"
4:17. So the messenger answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured."
4:18. Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
4:19. Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, [due] to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her labor pains came upon her.
4:20. And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, "Do not fear, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer, nor did she regard [it.]
4:21. Then she named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
4:22. And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."

✝️📜 STUDY: In our text, we see a man of Benjamin who ran from the battle and broke the news in Shiloh. His message made the people weep as he informed Eli of the battle's outcome. When the 98-year old Eli heard about the heavy defeat of Israel, the death of his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, and the capture of the ark by the Philistines, he slumped and died. When the pregnant wife of Phinehas heard of the loss of the ark, the death of her father-in-law and her husband, she went into premature labour and was delivered of a child she called 'Ichabod' saying, “The glory is departed from Israel.”God had spoken of His judgment on the house of Eli (1 Sam.3: 11-14) and we see the fulfilment in this passage. The Bible says that heaven and earth shall pass away but the word of God shall be fulfilled (Mark 13: 31). Has God given you a revelation? It shall come to pass. Has God spoken about the situation in your family, place of work, in your business, career, marriage or education? Hold on to that word from God for it will be fulfilled. Trust and delight yourselfin the Lord(Psa.37: 4).

✝️🙏PRAYER: Loving Father, may your word be fulfilled in my life today as I put mytrust in you. Amen.

*THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL.* CHURCH OF NIGERIA _(ANGLICAN COMMUNION)_

*DATE:* WEDNESDAY, 25TH SEPTEMBER, 2024 *THEME:* ISRAEL DEFEATED TWICE

*TEXT:* 1 SAMUEL 4: 1-10 *(NKJV)*

4:1. And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and encamped beside Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.
4:2. Then the Philistines put themselves in battle array against Israel. And when they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.
4:3. And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies."
4:4. So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who dwells [between] the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, [were] there with the ark of the covenant of God.
4:5. And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook.
4:6. Now when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What [does] the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews [mean?"] Then they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.
4:7. So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp!" And they said, "Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before.
4:8. "Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These [are] the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
4:9. "Be strong and conduct yourselves like men, you Philistines, that you do not become servants of the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Conduct yourselves like men, and fight!"
4:10. So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and every man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.

*MESSAGE:*

In the battle against the Philistines, Israel suffered a loss ofabout 4000 men and retreated to their camp at Ebenezer. The elders ofIsrael wondered why God had allowed this to happen and without asking the Lord, they decided to bring the ark from Shiloh to the battle to save them. Hophni and Phinehas were with the ark when it arrived at Ebenezer and the Israelites gave a resounding shout. However, the Philistines quickly encouraged themselves for the ensuing battle. Israel suffered another huge defeat by losing 30,000 men; the Philistines also killed Hophni and Phinehas and captured the ark. After God raised Samuel as a prophet in Israel, their enemies came to fight them and Israel went to battle without reference to God or Samuel.

When Christians do things without seeking God's will, they usually suffer defeat. The elders of Israel assumed that by bringing the ark, victory was assured. They suffered a more devastating defeat! Do you do things on assumption and without asking for God's guidance and help? Please, do not take God for granted. Always seek His will before you embark on a career, marriage, project, travel, or make a decision, so as to avoid defeat.

*PRAYER:*
Father, may I seek Your will before doing anything so You will grant me victory, *Amen.*
