Politics / Re: Ohaneze Youths Praise Ibeto Over Revival Of Moribund Nigercem Cement Company by EngrXrix(m): 8:54am On Apr 27, 2020
Anambralstson:
The youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Socio-Cultural Oragnisation has commended Chief Cletus Ibeto for championing revival of the moribund Nigercem Cement Company Nkalagu and urged other Igbo industrialists to emulate him on “Think Home” Philosophy. Nigercem located in Nkalagu, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi was established by the defunct Eastern Nigeria Government headed by Dr Michael Okpara before the Nigeria/Biafran civil war which led to the collapse of the industry.

Nigericem was transferred to Ibeto Group in an effort to revive the cement company since the administration of former Dr Sam Egwu of Ebonyi, but success of the re-activation only came in the present Government of Governor Dave Umahi.
The Ohaneze Youths noted that they were impressed by the positive reports that Nigercem will soon be fully back on stream.

The statement signed by the former youth leader Mr Jude Ezenwafor, former National Youth Leader, Tony Uche Ezekwelu and the secretary Stakeholders meeting Mazi Okadigbo Ifeanyi also expressed happiness over numerous job opportunities the company provided for the youths in the area.

Health / Re: WHO : Africa Coronavirus Cases Could Hit 10 Million In Six Months by EngrXrix(m): 12:01pm On Apr 18, 2020
pickatyou:

COVID-19 cases on the continent may shoot up from thousands to millions if models are accurate, UN health agency says.

Coronavirus cases in Africa could surge from just thousands now to 10 million within three to six months, according to provisional modelling, a regional World Health Organization (WHO) official said.

But Michel Yao, head of emergency operations for WHO Africa, said on Thursday it was a tentative projection that could change. He noted worst-case predictions for the Ebola outbreak had not come true because people changed their behaviour in time.

More:
What we know so far about coronavirus
'Coronavirus: Which countries have confirmed cases?

"This is still to be fine-tuned," he told a media teleconference. "It's difficult to make a long-term estimation because the context changes too much and also public health measures, when they are fully implemented, they can actually have an impact."

Separately, new research said Africa could see 300,000 deaths from the coronavirus even under the best-case scenario, according to modeling by the Imperial College London.

Under the worst-case scenario with no interventions against the virus, Africa could see 3.3 million deaths and 1.2 billion infections, the report by the UN Economic Commission for Africa said.

The world's poorest continent has seen more than 17,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and about 900 deaths so far - relatively few compared with other regions.

But there are fears that the numbers could balloon and overwhelm shaky health services.

Coronavirus fallout:
IMF says Nigeria economy to shrink by 3.4% (2:56)
"We are concerned that the virus continues to spread geographically, within countries," said Matshidiso Moeti, director of WHO's Africa region, which comprises 46 sub-Saharan nations and Algeria.

"The numbers continue to increase every day."

Other killers
Infections in South Africa, which has the highest number of cases, have slowed after it began a strict lockdown, but other nations - such as Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Algeria - have seen higher than average fatalities.

The WHO is working with authorities there to improve patient care and reduce fatalities, Moeti said.

She warned that President Donald Trump's withdrawal of US funding for the WHO could harm not only the fight against the coronavirus but also that against other killers such as polio, HIV and malaria.

"The impact, potentially, of this decision will be quite significant on areas such as polio eradication" just as Africa was close to being declared polio-free, said Moeti.

Trump accused the Geneva-based WHO on Tuesday of promoting Chinese "disinformation" about the coronavirus, saying this probably worsened the outbreak.

More than two million people have been infected globally, with the largest number in the US.

Washington is the biggest donor to the WHO, which tackles specific diseases and also strengthens national health systems. The US contributed more than $400m to the WHO in 2019, roughly 15 percent of its budget.

"We are very much hoping [suspension of funding] will be re-thought because the US government is an important partner not only in financial terms but also it is an important strategic partner," Moeti said.

She also said the organisation requires $300m to help African governments respond to the pandemic

So having known this, what steps are you taking as a world body to assist in curbing the spread of this pandemic in Africa. You can’t just sit there and give speculations/panic projections and not act. What is your responsibility as WHO to Africa. Abi na only to project numbers una sabi. Now I understand why trump cut your funding. Stop the panic projections and f****king do something damnit!!

She went on to release a video to the interviewer and made other accusations that caused viewers to fear for her safety.

I guess you are probably "asleep" like Nigeria's policymakers! The USA also produces grades with low sulphur, very similar to what Nigeria has.

Nigeria has inadvertently disarmed herself in any way you want to see it. They are an unreliable supplier, they sell blood oil, no country destroys the environment like Nigeria. In fact, if any company wishes to sell well, all they have to do, is emphasis the fact they don't sell blood oil from Nigeria!

In terms of output, Nigeria's output is about 2.2 million. America produces 13 million, Saudi Arabia 10million and Russia about 9 million.

Nigeria shouldn't even be exporting oil. Under normal circumstances, a country Nigeria's size and population
should be importing to complement domestic production.
So you can’t join a simple conversation without introducing any iota of insult right?
Do u think you first five words was necessary?

But seplat and shell said that they will be cutting cost and reducing their drilling from 15-20 wells and focus on 3-4 wells and I believe what they are doing is not in anyway ramping up production.
For new wells yes but for existing wells they could ramp it up if they decide. Only thing is proven reserves will deplete quickly but then I ask again, what’s the point of having all that proven reserves when u can’t sell the product?
Business / Re: Nigeria Slashes Crude Selling Prices To Woo Buyers by EngrXrix(m): 7:01pm On Mar 24, 2020
Gilgil:

Not really. This particular situation is novel. We have a demand shock from the Covid-19 pandemic at the same time a supply shock from the OPEC+ disagreement.

Currently, demand is very low and supply is too high. Saudi and Russia both have cash reserves to balance their budgets for the next 5-10 years at prices below $25.
However, Nigeria; a major import-based economy with no diversification has depleted cash reserves, has to sell lower volumes at a discount and yet has fewer customers and also cannot balance her budgets at that price ( Budgets are bloated and capital expenditure + health+ education is low priority: 3 key aspects that boost an economy).

We can't also increase production because over the past decades we had not invested in the needed exploration activities to assure proven reserves(dilly-dallying with PIB and politicizing everything ). You can only increase production significantly from drilling new fields ( But new drilling requires higher oil price to be justifiable- No one drills new projects in a low oil price regime)and ramping up existing fields (which would make the reserve volumes-in-place to finish quicker since existing fields volumes are fixed and currently depleting plus you can't just increase well production by 50%, you would incurr several technical problems like coning etc and your well would be shut-in).

Again, if you ramp up production anyway, you add further volumes to the glut in the market already and Saudi et al would respond in kind and give even juicier discounts premium customers ( Saudi produces 9.6MMBOPD while Nigeria does say 1.6MMBOPD, we cant stand their power and their proven reserves are more than 10x ours.

It's a double whammy! Just that Nigeria is screwed for not preparing!

That's why we have been advocating for merit-based systems rather than quotas in the country. So that the best people are running the affairs.
Very valid point I like how you dissect the situation. but as a nation we have to try. Nigeria’s crude grade is still one of the best in the world. Oil from the Mid East is heavy with sulfur so that’s the leverage Nigeria has I believe.
And I was talking about ramping up existing fields production. After all wats the point of having all that oil when u can’t sell it? If the proven reserves deplete then so be it. But we need to get more customers to buy our oil if it’s going to be sold cheap.

wahala dey for naija
Not really. The maths behind this is that Nigeria has to ramp up production. Probably by 50% more. It is better to sell a product for 5 naira and have 100mil buyers than sell for 100naira with only 10000 buyers. It’s same principle the saudis are using. By selling cheaper we get more customers then we can balance out the negatives of the trade. This may even lead to employment in exploration and production only diff is salaries won’t be as big as before.
Just Incase u are wondering, I’m in the system and this I know as a fact.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: EDWIIN Calls Out Nigeria Immigration Service Over Anti-inclusive Job Advert by EngrXrix(m): 8:14am On Mar 15, 2020
DebbyJose:

Nigeria’s leading advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, Empathy-Driven Women International Initiative EDWIIN, has drawn the attention of the Federal government to the recent Job Advertorial placed on one of Nigeria's daily newsprint. as it openly and deliberately discriminated against those who are tagged as Disables.

The advertorial, as placed by Nigeria Civil Defense, Correctional, Fire, And Immigration Service Board, has been tagged as Anti-Inclusion, as it specifically mentioned that "Applicant with any of the following physical challenge need not apply"

In a statement released by the convener of EDWIIN, Uri Ngozichukwuka, she hinted that Persons with disabilities are the subject of considerable discrimination, especially when it comes to employment. Many companies do not expressly include persons with disabilities in their workplace diversity policies and employers continue to express reluctance to hire these persons.

"In the wake of the recent signing into law of the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2019 by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, the major challenge has become the question of implementation, especially by the supposed overarching agencies which recruit in the thousands almost annually.

"It is pertinent that we take into cognizance, any form of the public notice that makes a mockery of the disability bill which has been duly signed in 2019 by President Mohammadu Buhari.

"Such deliberate attempt to ridicule, and openly reject Persons with Disability in the workplace is taking the country back 20 years by this posture. As a society, we need to move with times and be more empathetic towards one another.

"Families with persons with disabilities are already bearing the brunt of their care. Those that acquired skills and education could contribute immensely to the economy. They make up over 15% of our population. How do we alleviate poverty if we do not engage this demography?

"People with disabilities are very good with admin work. Great at desk work and data collating.

"We shall continue to make noise until our aim, which a workplace free of discrimination, patronizing attitudes, or resentment on the basis of disability is eschewed.

"We are calling the civil defense out to retract this anti inclusion advert, as bothers on gross insensitivity and lack of regard for the United Nation's SDGs that other nations are striving to honor in all ways", She stated

EDWIIN has been at the forefront of the campaign for the domestication of various international protocols and conventions on the rights of persons with disabilities by the Nigerian authorities.

Para military or the military does not recruit directly, disabled persons. This is all around the world. But if you get disabled during service. Depending on how severe the disability is, you could be retained or offered a new role that doesn’t require much locomotives or much interaction with other people.

Politics / Re: Robert Clarke: Death Sentence Won’t Stop Corruption, It’s In Blood Of Nigerians by EngrXrix(m): 7:53am On Feb 24, 2020
fergie001:
Robert Clarke, a senior advocate of Nigeria, says death sentence will not stop corruption because the act of stealing runs in the blood of Nigerians.

In an interview with the Punch, the lawyer said good governance remains the solution to curbing corruption and improve the economy.

He said corruption is strengthened by the perception of some Nigerians who view political positions as a “money-spinning venture”.

“Whether it is capital punishment or not, a crook would always be a crook. Most of these things are in the blood,” he said.

“Somebody who wants to steal has it in the blood and some Nigerians have imbibed the custom of believing that when they are working for government, they are there to steal. If you are made a commissioner tomorrow, all your relations are looking forward to getting contracts from you.

“So, we believe it’s a money-spinning venture. Sentencing people to death will not stop people from stealing. it’s in the blood of Nigerians to steal. Once there is good governance, the propensity to steal would reduce.”

Clarke called for the abolition of death sentence, saying most governors refuse to ensure its effectiveness as a result of their religious beliefs.

He recommended a minimum of 20 years imprisonment as an alternative to capital punishment.

“When a mechanic has power supply to work in his workshop and a tyre repairer has electricity to do his job, when will he have the time to dupe others? Nigeria is so great, with about 200 million people,” he said.

“Can you imagine if we have one singlet and briefs factory in Nigeria? Do you know the market it would have? We import everything. Whereas if most of our politicians who are stealing money can set up singlet and pants factories in every geo-political zone, the market is there, but we all just believe in stealing.

“We should abolish death sentence and make it a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment. I believe somebody who killed at the age of 36 and is sentenced to 20 years and comes back at the age of 56 should have learnt a lesson, rather than keep them there.

“Some are afraid to sign a death warrant or they have religious phobia that you shouldn’t take life when you don’t make one. Then, let us agree to cancel death penalty in our books and make it 20 years’ imprisonment.”

Nigerians in the US, as an ethnic group, has the highest percentage of Doctorates in the nation. 7 times higher than whites

Every Nigerian I’ve ever worked with in the US is the happiest person ever. Like, just incredibly positive outlooks on life.

They're like that outside the US too. I'm South African, met a lot of Nigerians in work and life and they're without exception incredibly positive and friendly people.

My wife is Nigerian. I honestly couldn't tell you how many of her family members have master's degrees.

Statistically, Nigerian Americans are a highly successful immigrant group. Not anecdotally. This is relevant because it calls into question the Trump administration’s stated logic, which is that we want to prevent immigrants from taking low income jobs or the immigration of criminals

Just a reminder, the country that most actual terrorists have come from is Saudi Arabia. The current administration tells us time and time again they trust the Saudi government. Makes sense, right?

228
Sir_Keee3h
Last "terrorist" attack by a non-citizen on US soil was by a Saudi national. And yet not a peep.

Now I'm not saying I'd support a Saudi ban any more than other countries, just that it shows the hypocrisy of the administration. They want to stop non-white immigration and especially Muslim immigration, yet they can't help but bend over to Saudi Arabia.

Why can’t we all stay back home and make this country the greatest black race the world has ever seen?
Why are we all looking to run away?
