nairalanda1: And I have a question for you....if you invest in a business, but are prevented from making a profit by the government forcing you to sell at a loss, would you make a profit at all?
Discos naturally have invested money (and in the case of ABUJA disco, which supplies where i live)..fixed up some things. What we are quibbling over is the ability of the discos to keep those things running, and to make more investment, hence my question to you? Power sector i n Nigeria is diveded into Generation, Transmision and the end sales people AKA DIscos, so what you are saying is to side with the Discos to increase cost to the end consumer whan in fat the producers did not increase power cost? SO if you are a distributor and you buy from me @ N10 and sell at 10% profit via regulations for tha past 10 years nothing happened I never increase my price you suddenly want o to increase yours to 20% profit and you want the FG to sit back cos you must make profits? Its the FGs right to protect consumer if not we dead. Let me also tell you something I know from inside, the DISCOS are the major benefactors in all this, they add nothig and claim a lot ask me how? |

nairalanda1: I think you are missing my point as well.
They did invest, but the price controls kept them from seeing returns on investment, which naturally impacted their ability to make a profit and improve things using said profit. I am trying to prove a point hence that question, what physical investment do you think DISCOs have on ground that is part of thier overhead eating into their profit.. |

nairalanda1: Telcos were allowed to set their prices as high as they could from the word go. Results: profits which were used to improve things
Discos were not allowed to from the word go. And even they had prices frozen. Results..losses, even as early as 2 years after privatization.
See the issue? Ok tell me what does DISCos invest on?what i infrastructure do they have to build or improve on? cos it seems I am missing something here |
Politics › Re: Power Supply Fails To Improve 10 Years After Privatization by erico2k2(m): 10:55am On Jan 02, 2024 |
nairalanda1: The telcos did not have the equivalent of NERC telling them to set their prices at 'cheap' rates either.
The Power sector has a NERC that tells them to set their prices, and unlike telcos, where you have to pay to use a phone,(and where all the cheats have long since been wiped out), you can bypass your meter and enjoy power for free illegally...as do a large number of Nigerians. That hits profits badly.
See the problem.? Rightly so, but see how expensive it was when it started, if not for competition the cost would have gone way up the roof as we speak. Why would they DISCOs be allowed to up thier prices when there has been no significant change or improvement to power supply. The new Law passed on by PMB enables them to generate their own power, transmit it and sell it, that's what they should invest o n. |

nairalanda1: Would you invest more and more of your money, if government forced you, assuming you were selling rice, to sell a 50kg bag of rice at N1000 instead of N40000 that you intended to sell it.?
Things, sadly, cost money. It costs money to do business. People would only invest more of their money if they would see returns on investment. With government forcing the power sector to sell below produiction cost (in 2019, it cost N58 to produce 1kwh of power, yet government had been telling discos to sell that kwh of power at N20-30)...HOW WOULD the discos survive.
Three have even collapsed under the strain, even after doing as you suggested. They are now bank-run. Them banks called in the loans.
Power is meant to be run as a business, for the benefit of the business owner. If you don't like it that way, then form a Marxist party and seize the means of production, and sell power at N10 per kwn, and pour in money....well it was tried before, and it led to society collapsing after several decades. The pricing is right at the moment, their problem is not enough customers. This was what the telcoms did, they invested heavily and the result me n you know,Coys need to have a focast for up to 5 to 7 years of still profits b4 they break even. The electrical mkt is consumer based and we have more than 200 million homes that need electricity so its a big mkt. NB I found out the DISCOS are parading a scam as well where they return power generated by the GENCos and still charge its customers the said power but no return to GEncos. The FG should formulate a plan to force the DISCOs to invest in power generation or own part or % of GenCos.FG should iether get a stake in Distribution or leave it i n total to a new interest party ie the DISCos, cos at the moment all the DISCos do is Buy power and sell it to us and make profit. |

Inspirer1: You can imagine spending 16 billion dollars some years ago and nothing tangible, even Dangote refinery is estimated at 20 billion dollars now... Well we can now generate and sell power back I think, PMB passed that law |
Politics › Re: Power Supply Fails To Improve 10 Years After Privatization by erico2k2(m): 10:37am On Jan 02, 2024 |
nairalanda1: And you can only get more generation if the DISCOS are allowed to make enough profit by being freed to set their own prices, and by government not setting their prices for them, and not paying subsidies....which would enable the discos to pay the GENCOS...which would enable the GENCOS to make a profit to expand generation.
Very simple. Nop, they are greddy, they need to invest their own money into the system, now tell me What has the DISCOS invested on? what infrastructure have the put on the ground?Even prepaid Meter they are charging us.you buy power online they charge you N100. and if you do not have a prepaid Metre you are charged average of N25k up for a 2 bed flat. |
Politics › Re: Power Supply Fails To Improve 10 Years After Privatization by erico2k2(m): 10:28am On Jan 02, 2024 |
nairalanda1: The answer is simple.
When privatization happened, government , to cut a long tale short, kept control of prices through NERC. To the point that the sector could not make enough profit to fix things. This is something that discos and gencos have been screaming about.
Buhari even went as far as ordering NERC to freeze prices for two years...whilst other costs increased. That was a wonderful decision.
Throw in the fact that power stealing is still a big problem....and the result is a sector running at zero profit and having to be saved by subsides on power.
This paper from 2019 gives one a good summary of the problem. And today, the subsidy continues.
But when you tell people on this site, they scream, cry and lose their mojo over the simple fact that capitalism means working systems, while socialisim means destruction.
Things, as has been said in many ways, cost money. Kudi. Gold. Calling me a government supporter does not change that fact. Nor does it change the fact that free electricity does not exist (unless someone at CERN invents nuclear fusion at a grand scale). We have an issue which is the BONE here, Generaration, wee need nearly if not more than 100MW, we have 15mw.We need more power generation. The thing bout theft can be fixed easy, we just device means of distributing |

BrickDevo: Am short of words, I have nothing to say but apologies and patience from Rawgold300,
True he engaged me, I visited his site, we video called and exchanged Ideas with him, the engagement was to produce interior and exterior designs for his building.
I first designed the kitchen and sent him the 3d, which I did with the office computer, but along the line, right after I paid rent, I lost my full time job, I was struggling to complete the drawings, feeling depressed, detached and over my head, there was delays because of the complexity of the job, I promised him high quality designs, my computer couldn't meet up.
I however pleaded with him to give me time, hoping I could find a way, he was not having it, after the deadline have been reached. When it's clear to I can't continue after the threats he dished out, I have to send him all the complete Interiors 3d renders I have done, which was of all low quality, I felt bad, just to show him I was struggling with it and did put it in work.
I also told him to give me time, I will refund him in parts, told him that I want to sell that pc and make up money and buy another pc, I also offered to be indebted to him and work for him in any future build till the debt is repaid. At a time I offered to drop the PC as a collateral, but if I do that how do I make up the money for the dept I am owing him.
I apologize to Rawgold300, and to anybody that feel disappointed in me, all am asking for is patience for the payback, there was no intention for scam from the beginning, If so I would not video call him, visited the site, up till now, we still chat on WhatsApp. There was no intention of scam and will never be. At least you hold up,this can happen to anyone, I realy hope you at least do the JOB instead of refund. Please engage him and carry him along with the true situation of things.nah money go lost nobody die.Maintainc omunication as comunication is god in cases like this |

They will renovate the building from government budget and give it out to their friends and family. The whole Idea of POWA was build markets for the wives of police officers and their family to trade within a barrack. These wives if not in trade now have the rights to give them out to outsiders who will trade there. I stand to be corrected cos as a young boy at Alhausa police barrack opp Secretariat saw the 1st POWA build inside then round the back opp MKO Gardens. |
