· Senate denies receiving proposed law from Presidency

Senators and governors from the Southern bloc have initiated moves to stop the National Graz­ing Bill which the Executive arm of government plans to send to the National Assembly.
The bill, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, is designed to check the incessant clashes be­tween Fulani herdsmen and farmers by creating special graz­ing reserves for the herdsmen in various parts of the country.
But Southern States’ gov­ernors and senators, who ex­pressed their opposition to the bill, have vowed to shut it down whenever President Muham­madu Buhari presents it to the National Assembly for passage.
The move of the Southern political leaders came as the Senate on Tuesday declared that no such proposed law had been forwarded to the National As­sembly by the Executive for con­sideration.
The proposed law, which has a huge financial implication on the Federal Government, has already split the senators along ethnic lines.

Some Senators, who spoke with The AUTHORITY on the bill, said they would only sup­port it if it provides for stiffer sanctions for herdsmen who use their cattle to destroy farm crops of poor farmers across the country.
The opposing lawmakers de­clared that it would be wrong to use the national budget to fund cattle rearing, which is a major private business in the North.
The Senators asserted that they would demand for the fi­nancial compendium of the pro­posed Grazing Bill ahead of its presentation.
A senator from the South East zone, who did not want his name in print, said that the only thing anybody in the South would sup­port in the bill would be punish­ment for herdsmen who destroy peoples’ farm crops.
He lamented the damage the herdsmen and their cows had done in the South East zone by destroying farm crops without any check by security agents.
Indeed, there was a mini-dra­ma on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday when Senator Enyin­naya Abaribe (PDP, Abia) drew the attention of his colleagues to speculations in the social media over claims by the Presidency that its “Bill on the Establishment of a National Grazing Commis­sion” had passed the second read­ing on the floor of the Senate.
Abaribe, who raised a Point of Order under Order 43, said he had been inundated with over 1,000 calls from his constit­uents and the public on the pre­sent Senate passing the said bill.
He recalled that the bill on grazing reserves was presented during the 7th Senate by Senator Zaynab Kure (Niger), who is no longer in the Upper House, but the bill was rejected.
The third term Senator not­ed that his reason for raising the Point of Order was to seek expla­nation on when the bill was dis­cussed on the floor of the Senate to the extent of it scaling first and second readings.
He said: “This personal ex­planation has to do with a series of calls on the issues. I have got­ten more than 1,000 calls over the weekend and this has to do with something I consider is not be­fore the Senate; a phantom thing that is not before the Senate.
“It is about something called the Grazing Reserves Commis­sion and everybody is calling me and people are sending me text messages to the extent that when I explained to some of my constituents that there is no such thing before the Senate, they now turned around to say ‘the only reason why you are saying so is that you never go to the Senate plenaries; you must be an absen­tee member.’
“And when I asked where the information was coming from, they said it was from the social media”.
Responding, the Senate Pres­ident, Dr Bukola Saraki, who apparently didn’t want to go into another round of contro­versy with the Presidency, sim­ply said he had noted Abaribe’s complaint, whilst vacating his seat at about 11.45am to attend his Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) trial.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Committee on Rules and Busi­ness, Senator Babajide Omow­orare, has denied any receipt of the National Grazing Bill by the Senate.

“This is to clarify that no such bill has been presented by the Ex­ecutive arm of government and none has so far been filed by any Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 8th Senate,” he said.
“For the avoidance of doubt, a `National Grazing Reserve Es­tablishment and Development Commission Bill” (SB. 60) was presented by Senator Zaynab Kure (Niger Central) during the 7th Senate (2011 – 2015) which has now expired by the opera­tions of law on the 6th June, 2015 in furtherance of Section 64(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the lawmaker main­tained.
Ogbe was reported to have confirmed the Federal Govern­ment’s plan to import grass for feeding cattle as a first step to the presentation of a National Graz­ing Bill to the National Assem­bly.

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), has warned South East and South South Governors to “tread with caution” over the proposed Grazing Commission bill which has passed its second reading in the National Assembly.
IPOB warned that any South East or South South governor who cedes out land in his state as grazing field for cattle will have himself to blame.
The statement which was signed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Officer, Emma Powerful, declared that no part of Biafran territory would be used as grazing field .
“We accuse the South East, South South senators and House of Representatives members of allowing the grazing allocation to pass the second reading in the National Assembly.
“Again, we are warning the governors of the zone to thread with caution because we don’t have places to use as Fulani ranch, and any governor who issues a place will bear the consequences and posterity will never forgive those who sabotage the people”, the statement said.
Alleging that the allocation of land to Fulani herdsmen was a ploy to islamise Nigeria, IPOB vowed to stoutly resist any attempt to convert any part of the South East as grazing field.
“This is a systematic way of bringing the invaders in our land and they are coming to islamise us”, IPOB claimed.
The pro-Biafra group argued that in developed economies other people’s land is not converted into grazing field just to please some persons, adding that if herdsmen need grazing field, Northern Governors should make same available for them.
“More so, the highest producers of cows in the world is Argentina followed by Australia; they have not been ravaging and destroying farmland or causing problems with the people. Let the northern governors allocate enough land in their state to them because we have no land for cow rearing in Biafra.”
IPOB also blasted National Assembly members of southern extraction for their inability to halt the bill which has passed its second reading , calling them “stooges.”

The traditional ruler of Umuanyi autonomous com­munity in Isuikwuato coun­cil of Abia State, HRH Eze Uwadi­egwu Ogonnaya, has raised the alarm over the occupation of their farmlands by Fulani herdsmen.
Umuanyi is the community where the Department of State Services (DSS) penultimate week, claimed five herdsmen were killed and buried in a shallow grave by the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
IPOB has since denied any in­volvements in the saga, alleging that it was a frame-up to portray the pro-Biafra group as a terror or­ganisation.
The monarch said that since the allegation by the DSS went public, the community had been living in dread of the Fulani herdsmen who had relocated to the community in their numbers.
A statement issued by the royal father and made available to The AUTHORITY on Sunday, read in part: “Since the said incident, we have rather noted with trepidation and fear that more herdsmen have relocated to our farmlands behind the Abia State University, Uturu.
“They joined their kinsmen there who have made our people always look over their shoulders whenever they are going to the farm. Nobody dares to go to the farm alone.”
The monarch accused the herdsmen of wanton destruction of the community’s crops and des­ecration of their stream, adding that the invaders are armed with sophisticated weapons.
“Apart from the destruction of our food crops and pollution of our rivers and streams, the Fulani herdsmen are armed to the teeth with guns, swords, bows, arrows, charms, and amulets.
“Their main camp from where they take off every day to various directions is at the Alaumara Pla­teau towards Ogii in Okigwe LGA of Imo State. They always leave trails of destruction of food crops on their paths.
“The fear of Fulani herdsmen is now the beginning of wisdom for our farmers. They dare not com­plain or get nearer these Fulanis to express their anger over their de­stroyed crops,” he added.
The monarch called on the Fed­eral Government to as a matter of urgency, curb the excesses of the herdsmen and also investigate the source of their weapons.
“We, therefore, appeal to the Federal Government to check the excesses and acts of impunity dis­played by these Fulani herdsmen to avoid another Agatu tragedy.
“There should be a nationwide disarmament of the Fulani herds­men and security agencies should find out the source of their acquisi­tion of arms such as AK 47 riffles.”
The traditional ruler said that the lives of his subjects as well as “ten and hundreds of students of the Abia State University, Uturu, and workers living in the village have been put on the line.”
He also denied that the alleged killing of herdsmen occurred in his community, saying it took place in the neighbouring Imo communi­ty– about five kilometres away.
“We therefore, wish to use this medium to inform you correctly hat the five Fulani herdsmen were not killed in any Umuanyi for­est owned by this community”, he said.

Herdsmen hack Anambra farmer, 2 others to death

There is tension in Umudi­um village in Umumbo community, Ayamelum Local Government Area, over the alleged killing of 45-year old Mr Ekwunife Echim Okolo by Fula­ni herdsmen in the area.
The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Simeon Chidubem, who disclosed this ugly incident in his palace at Umumbo, maintained that there is no day a case of attack, moles­tation of underage children, men, women and sexual abuse by the Fulani herdsmen is not reported in his kingdom.
He noted that the herds­men who attacked the young man at his farm were roaming round farms without their cattle searching for the villagers to at­tack, hack or kill with their so­phisticated guns and other dan­gerous weapons.
Igwe Chidubem, who stated that another victim is now re­ceiving treatment at Iyienu Hos­pital, Nkpor, noted that the case has been reported to the Divi­sional Police Officer in charge of Anaku Police divisional head­quarters.
He recalled that the same Fu­lani herdsmen, in February this year, killed one Mr Nwogbo Oka­for at his farm, alongside anoth­er unidentified person who was also allegedly killed by the Fula­ni herdsmen while a lot of others were reported missing.
He said that the communi­ty has before now, written, “Save our soul letter” to the Anambra State Commissioner of Police in Awka, bringing to his notice the wanton attack, hacking and kill­ing of people of the community as well as the deliberate destruc­tion of their farm produce such as rice, cassava, yam, okuru and maize by the Fulani herdsmen in the area.
The traditional ruler who said that the community would always toe the path of peace, appealed to the police and other security agencies in the state to urgently come to the aid of the community and rescue them from the men­ace of the Fulani herdsmen. He commended the effort of the po­lice and the Department of State Security at Anaku since the inci­dent started in the area.
Governor Willie Obiano, worried over the situation, had called on the security agencies in the state to protect the innocent farmers, appealing to herdsmen through the Hausa Community in the state to live cordially with their hosts.

ENUGU—Tension is brewing in Owa community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State where a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Aniako Celestine, priest in charge of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ukana, Udi Local Government Area was kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen Saturday evening on his way from his home town, Ezeagu.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the herdsmen demanded a ransom of N10 million through his mobile number.

This is even as activities of herdsmen in Ugwuleshi, Awgu Local Government Area of the state, last week, led to destruction of farmland and livestock worth millions of Naira and the detention of 76 members of the community, who were later granted bail by Umuahia Magistrate’s Court last Friday, following Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s intervention.


The herdsmen had also killed two sisters in Abbi, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area last month leaving 17 houses burnt.
State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the abduction of the priest, saying the command was on their trail.

Meanwhile, following the release from prison custody of the 76 farmers from Ugwuleshi autonomous community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, after they were granted bail by Magistrate Court’s in Umuahia, Abia State capital, the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Godwin Nwobi, and some other leaders from the area, during the weekend, commended the efforts of Governor Ugwuanyi in securing the release of the farmers.

While noting that the farmers arrived home safely to unite with their loved ones after they were granted bail, the people of the community through their traditional ruler, Igwe Nwobi and other political stakeholders, appealed to the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the challenges being encountered between the nomadic Fulani/Hausa herdsmen and indigenous farmers in their community over the grazing of cattle on farmlands.

MASSOB reacts
In another development, the Uchenna Madu-led Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has warned soldiers to stop molesting and intimidating Ndigbo while protecting Fulani herdsmen who use their cattle to destroy farmlands and crops.

In a statement yesterday, the National Director of Information for the group, Mr. Samuel Edeson, alleged that the activities of the herdsmen were part of the alleged grand design to Islamise Nigeria.

He said: “MASSOB warns Nigerian Army to stop intimidating and killing the people of Biafra in the guise of protecting the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.
“MASSOB advise South-East governors to encourage community-based vigilante groups for proper and well-coordinated security of lives, properties and farmlands.”

So my darling little 'friend' Wizkid came on my IG page this morning to blast me for writing yesterday that he was given quit notice at the Lekki home he claimed he bought some years ago, which he actually rented. He threatened to beat me up...called me an ugly old bitch...(I'm ugly? lol) says I don't have a man (crying over that..) and called my mum a loser...(what a child).

Anyway, all that don't matter, people have said worse to me...what I wanted to address is the part where he said I slept with his director and he left me in a hotel...that one I will definitely want to address because some people actually believe it. That my dear friends, is a lie! Please continue...


First and foremost, I've never met Wizkid one on one. I've only seen him once in real life on stage at a show a few years ago. I've never met anybody who is his director. Guess he put that line in his comments to defame me. You that mad that people now know the house is not yours? Lol.

Trust me, if I knew someone was Wizkid's director, I'd rather kill myself than sleep with him or any other entertainer for that matter (except maybe he's my husband..hehe) because I know how some of these entertainers are...they kiss and tell a lot. You can't afford to be messing around in their circle. So, no, I have NEVER slept with Wizkid's director. I live a celibate life..most of the time. (Though, that has to end soon...I'm getting old and missing out on that part of life...lol)

I've always been an advocate of women respecting their bodies and owning their own. And I feel sex should only happen when you're in committed relationship (that is if you can't wait till marriage) and I recommend celibacy for a long as you're not committed to someone. There's absolutely no dignity in sleeping around and messing around with different men. It's ugly and God don't like ugly. So no, I'm not that woman, and will never be that woman. Nice try, Wizkid!

Having said that, I'm sure, you wonder why Wizkid is so mad at me? To be honest, I don't know either. All I know is that his beef with me started a long time ago but he decided to start bashing me online after I refused a meeting with him. A few months ago, he asked his PR people to contact me, that he wanted to talk to me. For some reason, he thought I didn't like him and I was hurting his image online. He wanted to see how I could write more positive things about him but I turned down the meeting. Not that I have anything against him, I sincerely don't! I think he's an amazing talent and one of the few music stars in Nigeria with a midas touch. So this wasn't personal. I just didn't want to meet him. If he lobbies me then it means I won't be able to write anything about him anymore...and my job is to write...about everything, including entertainers.

I am cordial with some of them...many of them I have never met. I try to stay away from gatherings where they are because the more friends you make in the entertainment industry, the less you can write. And that will inadvertently affect your work. The few ones that I call acquaintances, it's hard to write about them because you feel you're cool with them and even when you write, they call you to complain. So, the fewer 'friends' I have in the entertainment industry, the better my job will be.

So Wizkid can bash me all he wants...but I will continue to do my job. Maybe he thinks the more he bashes me, then I will stop writing about him? Won't work. But meanwhile, if he tells a lie about me, I will address it. LIB plans to be around for a long time...some of these people will come and go! :-).

Thankfully under President Goodluck Jonathan the Igbo managed to do better than at any other time in our history. As a matter of fact this was so much the case that Nigerians from other parts of the country, particularly the Yoruba and the Hausa-Fulani, often sulked about it and openly complained.
Jonathan had a soft spot for the Igbo and I have little doubt that that partiality was borne out of his innate sensitivity to their historical trials and tribulations. It may have been sub-conscious but I have no doubt that it was there.
Unlike others he viewed the Igbo as equals and regarded them as human beings: he treated them with respect and decorum and he gave them their due. Consequently it was under Jonathan that Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika the first Igbo Chief of Army Staff since the civil war was appointed.
It was also under Jonathan that Senator Pius Anyim, the first Igbo Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria since independence was appointed.
Sadly when President Muhammadu Buhari was elected into office all that changed and eastern stars stopped shining. Under him the persecution, marginalization, humiliation, detention, state-sponsored executions and assassinations and sectarian and ethnic-motivated murder of the Igbo has reached pre-civil war proportions.
To add to that the Igbo have been treated with more disdain and contempt by the Buhari administration than any other government in our entire history. Permit me to share juat one example of that here.
A few days ago hordes of AK-47-wielding Fulani herdsmen and militants attacked some farms in Enugu state. Fearing that the Agatu treatment may be meted out to them and in order to protect their lives, their families, their property, their livestock and their crops from the murderous vandals and marauders the Igbo farmers organised themselves and fought back gallantly.
Consequently there were casualties on both sides. Instead of the police to come in to apprehend the Fulani aggressors and raiders, seize their weapons and bring them to justice they arrested 76 Igbo farmers. Up until today those farmers are in police custody and their families have had no access to them.
As far as I am aware not one Fulani militant or herdsman was questioned over this incident let alone disarmed, caitioned or arrested. As unbelievable as it may appear this patterm of behaviour by the security agencies has been the norm throughout the Middle Belt and the south since President Buhari has come to power.
They have displayed great reluctance to protect the indigenous people and farmers of those two regions from the pillaging, killing and raping that the Fulani herdsmen always subject them to.
It is also instructive to note that the political leaders of the igbo nation appear to have been so intimidated by this trend of events that none of them has spoken out against the abduction of the Enugu farmers or condemned the barbarous action of the Fulani herdsmen that raided their farms.
As a matter of fact the only two politicians in the entire country that have publicly expressed concern about the safety, whereabouts and plight of the 76 Igbo farmers are both from the south west and they are Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state and yours truly. Fayose did so in an advert in the newspapers a few days ago and I did so in my column last week titled "Of Tyrants, Martyrs and Heroes (Part 2)".
Everyone else, including the Igbo Governors. Senators, Ministers, elders and leaders of their socio-political groups has maintained a curious, submissive and stoic silence on this matter. I guess that is a sign of the times that we are living in and I cannot blame them. Given the circumstances and the obvious constraints of their political leaders and elders why would the younger generation of the Igbo not agitate and fight for the establisment of Biafra?
This is especially so given the fact that it is self- evident that under the leadership of President Buhari igbos, and indeed other southerners, are not just being subjected to violence in the north but they are also being attacked by northerners down in their own states in the south.
Southern leaders are expected to live with this, accept it as the norm and most importantly they are not expected to defend themselves, defend their people or complain about the atrocities that they are being subjected to in their own land.
This hardly kindles hope for the future of our nation and it certainly does not engender confidence in our country or enhance national unity. It is clear that the contempt with which our government views the people of the south and particularly the igbo is obvious and glaring.
President Buhari himself, during one of his interviews with Al Jazeera and during the course of an earlier interview with Nigeria's NTA, displayed that contempt very eloquently when, in answer to a question about Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB's prolonged detention and the increasingly aggressive agitation for Biafra, he asked rather brusquely "what exactly do the Igbo want?"
When he was told that the Igbo felt marginalised by his government he went further on to ask "who is marginalizing who?"
Again before millions of viewers from all over the world President Buhari refused to watch the footage of the extra-judicial killing of some IPOB youths by his security forces when he was asked to do so during his infamous interview with Al Jazeera.
In that same interview he went on to dismiss the legitimate aspirations of and agitation by millions of young people from the eastern part of our country for the creation of Biafra in just one sentence.
He said that if they had any complaints they should agitate for more states in the east instead of yearning for their own country.
One wonders how state creation can appease a generation of angry young Igbos who genuinely believe that their people are being systematically killed off and that they have been turned into slaves and second class citizens by Nigeria.
And this coming from a man who has refused to appoint one single Igbo into the Presidency and who believes that he has done them a favor by appointing five Igbo Ministers into his cabinet.
He forgets that the constitution of our country compels him to appoint at least one Minister per state and that whether he likes it or not he must appoint those five because the Igbos control five states in the Federation each of which must be represented in the cabinet.
It may not be fashionable to say it publicly but the truth is that the Igbo are virtually an endangered species under President Buhari's government.
They have been robbed of their dignity, their sense of self-worth, their self-esteem and their self-respect by our government and the Igbo youth particularly do not believe that they have much of a future left in Nigeria. That is why the agitation for Biafra has reached fever pitch among them.
Whatever anyone feels about Biafra the fact of the matter is as follows: as my friend and brother Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, the former Governor of Abia state, said a few days ago, "the igbo have not been fully integrated back into Nigeria 46 years after the civil war".
The truth is that Nigeria is not working for most of the ethnic nationalities and everyone knows it. And as long as those that hold power at the center today remain in power things will not get any better.
As a matter of fact as long as they are in power things will get worse. In Buhari's Nigeria if you are not from the core north and if you are not a Muslim you do not have much hope of getting to the top or achieving your full potentials.
That is "chanji" for you and that is Buhari's mission and vision. We said it during the Presidential campaign but regrettably few would listen. Now the same people that would not listen are regretting it bitterly and they are saying that we were right.
In Buhari's Nigeria it is one law for the oppressed and another for the ''Born to Rule" oppressor. Whether we wish to admit it or not that is the reality and everyone knows it.
There is also a well-orchestrated attempt to Islamise our country and suppress the practice of Christianity in some parts within our shores. Kaduna state is an example and what is going on there is nothing but a test run for the rest of the country. .
Yet the truth is that everything has its expiry date including religious bigotry, bondage and slavery. The oppressor often forgets that the future belongs to the oppressed.
The Irish experience and the beautiful people of Eire and the Emerald Isle have taught us that. Far away London in merry England was once their capital yet today it is their very own Dublin. If God can do it for them He can also do it for us. It is just a matter of time.
Some will disagree with the contents of this contribution whilst others will hate me for writing it. To such troubled souls I recommend the words of Albert Einstein. He said:

In a decisive move to resolve the lingering crisis and se­cure the release of 76 vil­lagers detained after the recent clash between Awgu farmers and Fulani herdsmen, Gover­nor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enu­gu State visited the Ugwuleshi Community yesterday and en­gaged the villagers and oth­er stakeholders in a town hall meeting.
At the occasion, held at the Ugwuleshi Primary School field, in Awgu Local Govern­ment Area, Ugwuanyi prom­ised to compensate the farm­ers whose farm crops were destroyed with the sum of N5 million but dished out the sum of N3.5 million on the spot – for logistics aimed at securing the release of 76 members of the community being detained at a prison custody in Umuahia.
The 76 Awgu farmers are be­ing detained on allegations of il­legal possession of firearms in the aftermath of their clash with Fulani herdsmen.
The villagers were arrested on March 17 and dumped at the federal prison Afara Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, after they were arraigned in the mag­istrate court but denied bail.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Prosecution Abia State, yesterday, said it was yet to re­ceive the case file of the arrested the 76 farmers from Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community in Awgu LGA of Enugu State.
Still in another development, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), yesterday, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the feder­al government to release the 76 detained Awgu farmers, includ­ing two village women abduct­ed by the herdsmen or face the organisations local and interna­tional wrath.
Governor Uguwanyi who ap­pealed for peaceful settlement of the fracas involving farmers in Ugwuleshi Autonomous Com­munity and the Fulani herds­men resident in the community that arose over alleged destruc­tion of farm crops of the villag­ers by the herdsmen, released the money to the Awgu transitional chairman, Hon Stanley Okeke.
While commending the Ugwuleshi Community for the peaceful way they have conduct­ed themselves since March 17, 2016, when their men and sons were taken to Umuahia, Ug­wuanyi described the crisis as a security matter.
According to him, these in­cidents had occurred at Uzo-Uwani and Nsukka LGAs among the villagers and Fulani herds­men but were resolved through the intervention of the state gov­ernment adding that the present menace in Ugwuleshi Commu­nity will by the special grace of God be settled so that both par­ties will continue to live harmo­niously.
Ugwuanyi stressed he was personally moved to visit the community to appeal for calm because his administration is do­ing everything possible to ensure that an enabling environment of peace is maintained in Enugu, as a measure of attracting investors into the state.
The Enugu State Commis­sioner of Police, CP Nwodibo Ekechukwu, who accompanied Governor Ugwuanyi in the visit advised the community to avoid taking laws into their hand but report to security agencies at any point in time they found a group of cattle rearers grazing on their farm crops.
He assured the police must ensure such perpetrators are dealt with accordingly and pros­ecuted in the law court, to serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier in his Speech, Hon. Toby Okechukwu, the House of Rep Chairman, Committee on Works, called on the Nation­al Assembly to pass into law, a policy creating restricted graz­ing area for herdsmen in various parts of the country, as measure of curtailing the constant clashes among wandering Fulani herds­men and rural farmers in various parts of the country.
He explained the effects of climatic change resulting in de­sertification of various parts of Northern Nigeria and the Boko Haram threat in North East zone of the country is compelling the Fulani herdsmen to move fur­ther South with their cattle where there are abundant vege­tation and that there is nothing anybody can do about it.
Further according to Oke­chukwu, to forestall emerg­ing crisis with rural farmers in various communities, specific grounds should mapped out as grazing fields for the wandering Fulani herdsmen.
Many indigenes and politi­cal stakeholders of the commu­nity among whom are the tran­sitional chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon Stanley Okeke, Hon Nel­son Uduji, member represent­ing Awgu South Constituen­cy and Barrister Damian Ajah, commented on the efforts they have made to secure bail for the detained communities mem­bers were hampered by the East­er Holidays.
The traditional ruler of Ug­wuleshi Community, Igwe God­win Okosisi, on behalf of his cabinet commended Governor Ugwuanyi for making out time out of his busy schedule to come and identify with their pains.
He assured that the com­munity will never take laws into their hands but toe the line of justice, in seeking for peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The Youth Leader of the community, Mr. Ugochukwu Okeke, stated in his address, “We are here because of Gover­nor Ugwuanyi’s visit. We are law abiding citizens.”
Abia DPP yet to receive case files:
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Prosecution Abia State, yesterday, said it was yet to re­ceive the case file of the arrested 76 farmers from Ugwuleshi Au­tonomous Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enu­gu State.
Their arrest followed a clash with Fulani herdsmen who ille­gally settled in the community about 10 years ago and were al­legedly using their cattle to de­stroy the crops and farmlands of the natives.
The traditional ruler of the community, HRH Eze Godwin Nwobi had in an interview with our correspondent raised con­cern over the health condition of the arrested villagers who had remained in detention since their arrest.
He said that some of the vil­lagers had swollen faces as a re­sult of the beating they got from “the men in military uniform” before whisking them away to Umuahia.
But the Army Command in Abia State has denied any in­volvement in the operation dis­missing the said “men in mili­tary uniform “ as fake solders.
The Zone 9 Command of the Nigerian Police in Umuahia also denied any knowledge of the op­eration, thus, raising concern over the true identity of the said “men in military uniform”.
Both Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra ( IPOB) have called for the in­vestigation of the said fake sol­ders and those behind the arrest of the locals since Awgu is not in Abia State.
Investigations by THE AU­THORITY in Umuahia, re­vealed that the state’s Attorney General as well as the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) were not even aware of the matter al­though the villagers were said to have been arraigned last week.
When our correspondent called at the Ministry of Jus­tice yesterday for enquiries into the matter and the exact charg­es preferred against the villagers, neither the DPP nor the Attor­ney General was available.
But the state’s Solicitor Gen­eral cum Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Enyin­naya Okezie told our corre­spondent that the Ministry was yet to receive the case file.
He explained that if the mag­istrate court had transferred the case to the DPP on the grounds that it has no jurisdiction over the matter, police would bring the case file to the Ministry for study and proper analysis.
According to him, if af­ter studying the case the DPP discovers that there is no case against the suspects, he will di­rect the magistrate court to dis­charge them but if they have a case, the matter will be trans­ferred to the appropriate High Court.
Meanwhile, the question begging for answer is ‘who ar­raigned the villagers before the magistrate court?’
When contacted, the Po­lice Police Relations Officer ( PPRO), Mr. Udeviotu Onyeke said he was not aware of the mat­ter but begged for more time to make inquiries.
He later confirmed that the State’s Criminal Investigation Department was handling the matter, and promised to furnish our correspondent with details the next day after he must have been properly briefed.
IPOB’s Ultimatum:
In a press statement co-signed Barrister Emma Nme­zu and Dr. Clifford Chukwue­meka Iroanya, IPOB spokesmen, obtained by The AUTHORI­TY, yesterday, the pro-separa­tist group warned that the bold backing of marauding Fulani herdsmen using federal might can no longer be accepted by civilized society.
In their words: “The raw show of power and bravado by Fulani herdsmen at Umuneshi, Awgu Community of Enugu State just cannot be accepted by any civilized society.
“First, the ever recalcitrant Fulani marauders abducted two women on their way to the farm. All entreaties to release the two women fell on deaf ears. The youth of the community mobi­lized to free their women, but the Fulani warriors informed their kinsmen at the military bases in the neigbouring Abia State.
“The soldiers stormed the community, beat up and arrest­ed all 76 youths, bundled them to Zone 9, ordered them charged and remanded in prison with­out as much as allowing them to make statements.
“As at today the 76 youth re­main locked up, the two wom­en remain missing as Fulani su­premacy reigns supreme.”
In an ultimatum, the stated:The IPOB is hereby giv­ing president Muhamadu Buha­ri 72 hours beginning from 6pm, Tuesday 29th March 2016, to re­lease the 76 youths of Umeneshi Community Awgu, together with the two women earlier ab­ducted by the Fulani fighters.
“The Fulani flags flying over our ancestral land must also be removed within the same peri­od failure of which the world will witness the first true FEEL of the anger of IPOB world-wide.”

According to the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Godwin Nwobi, the incident took place on Thursday last week. Igwe Nwobi alleged that Fulani herdsmen who settled in the community without permission had been using their cattle to destroy their crops and farmlands over the years.
He said pleas and warnings from the farmers to the herdsmen had always fallen on deaf ears as they continued to graze on the community’s farmlands with impunity.
Irked by the continued destruction of their crops which he said were their only means of livelihood, the youths of community protested the impunity of the herdsmen.
He disclosed that after the protest, information filtered in the village that two women who went to farm had been abducted by the herdsmen.
“When we got such information, the community gathered to discuss modality of dispatching some people on rescue mission and suddenly they were surrounded by men in military uniform who arrested 76 of them and carried them away in trucks”, the monarch said.
He therefore appealed for the intervention of the Enugu State Government, to secure the release of the arrested villagers who he said were taken to Umuahia Prison.
“It is wrong for our people who fled the North because of Boko Haram to be treated as slaves in their own land. We don’t want to be destroyed by herdsmen like they did in Agatu, Benue State. Government should please come to our rescue.
We appeal to our Governor, and other South East Governors to save Igbo land from herdsmen invasion before it is too late”, Igwe Nwobi lamented. But the Public Relations Officer of the 14 Brigade Ohafia, Major Sydney Mbaneme, denied knowledge of the incident, saying the “men in military uniform” were not soldiers.
According to him, they might be fake soldiers and civilians who camouflage themselves, saying that “if at all they are solders, they are not our soldiers.”
However, the zonal Police Public Relations Officer of Zone 9, Police Command, Emma Jiakponna, DSP, said he was not aware of the incident.”
Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Youth Council has condemned the arrest and detention of the villagers, saying it as “an insult to the Igbo nation.”

The word “South-South”, even though it may sound absurd, is a name we have come to accept as a people. We can’t say exactly how we came about to be identified with the name neither can we say exactly when we were given the name, but we just know it is our name. While growing up back in the days, geography taught us about “the North”, “the South”, “The East” and “The West”. For proper definition of locations, we were also told about “The North-West, North-East, South-West and South-East” I can’t remember anything like the “North-North”, “South-South”, “East-East” or West-West , but here I am today, writing a letter to my South-South brethren. That is what happens to a people who are not in control of their cultural development or their political and economic future. That is what happens to a people who are just there for their numbers; that is what happens to people who are just kept for their services; that is what happens to people who are just custodians of wealth for a supposedly superior people and finally, that is what happens to people who are seen as slaves. Any name is suitable for them, they can only get whatever is given to them even if it is originally theirs. If in doubt, please remind me the meaning of KUNTA KINTE
I write this letter, not because it is frustrating to see how we allowed a defrauded propaganda to position our people as the pawns in the political chess game called Nigeria, but rather, I write this letter in an effort to request that we free ourselves from these propaganda that have lingered for too long. If our grandfathers and fathers did not ask questions, is there any divine law that says we cannot ask? We know we all belonged to the old Eastern Region of Nigeria before the Northern protectorate took back their power after the gruesome murder of General Aguiyi Ironsi. Just for the records, let me do us a bit of history here. Major General Ironsi, as Head of State, was cornered and arrested somewhere in Western Nigeria on July 29th of 1966, his hands and feet were tied together, then tied to a Land Rover jeep with a little space in between and driven on a tarred road, face down for several kilometers. The then highest ranking Northern officer, an acting (unconfirmed) lieutenant-colonel, was chosen to be the next Head of State ahead of serving brigadiers, colonels and lieutenant-colonels of Southern Nigeria, followed by the dreadful killings of officers and soldiers of Eastern Nigeria, including our so-called South South soldiers and officers . The genocide that followed is what is recorded as the Nigerian Civil War of 1967–1970. As if that was not enough, the Eastern Region was broken apart with the sudden creation of the then Southeastern state (today’s Cross River and Akwa Ibom), Rivers State (today’s Rivers State and Bayelsa) and East-Central State (today’s South-East geopolitical zone). It was during that war that propaganda were designed, created and generated to separate us from the old Eastern Region and to make the average Igbo man our potential enemy in an effort to reduce their own presumed enemies. In as much as it is a bitter history, I still find it necessary to provide you with this preamble.
I write this letter to remind us that our region, known as the South-South today was a creation of the North for the sake of creating the disunity we face today. And more so, it was not just for the disunity for them to win the war, but to also take away our resources, our manpower and our economic future. In 2014, when President Jonathan, a son of the so called South-South, decided to re-contest the 2015 elections, Sheik Junaid Mohammed, in an engagement on behalf the Northern protectorate, reminded us that the so-called South-South was a creation of the North for effective management of the Northern interest in Eastern Nigeria. How bad could this be? Can we imagine that? So, while we are busy reminding ourselves that we are a different people or that the Igbos are wicked and are trying to kill us, the North is joyously taking over and owning 85% of our oil wells while the West takes the leftovers. And what do we get? Noise! Even the supposed football legend, Sunday Okechukwu Oliseh, is busy telling us he is not Igbo as if it is a curse to be Igbo. One wonders if the name “Okechukwu” is of Hausa or Yoruba origin. When you speak Igbo as a language and yet claim you are not Igbo, is that not the saddest thing that can happen to any people of identical culture? Even Major Kaduna Nzeogwu that led the first coup that was said to be an Igbo coup is from Okpanam village in today’s Delta State. Could he have come out to say today, like Sunday Oliseh said, that he was not Igbo? If the Abakaliki or Nsukka indigene who has a more distant dialect of Igbo is Igbo, how come the Anioma or Okrika indigene, whose dialect is easily understood, is not Igbo? How did a people of the same culture get so separated this far?
I write this letter to speak to those of us regarded as minority tribes. How can we be minority when, in essence, we are known to be about 35 million of the said 180 million of the estimated population of Nigeria? How can we be a minority in our own lands if we were not treated as such or if we did not accept to be such? If those from the alliance which separated us from the West are said to be about 50 million in population and our brethren in the East are said to be about 40 million, how can we accept that we are a minority? Our compatriots from the alleged minorities of the North are said to be another 30 million. Who then is the minority? Having run through these figures, we know who the real minorities are. Be it as it appears, the truth is that our region was broken into two so as to weaken our original strength given that, at a combined population strength of 35 million plus 40 million people, our economic and entrepreneurial strength put together, would be something the ruling alliance will be worried about. So why should we ever think that it is logical to claim we are two different peoples when, in essence, we have always been one and the same people for over 1,000 years before the arrival of the white man? If what the white man did to us was not bad enough, is it not ridiculous that we allowed a certain minority made up of immigrants from fringes of the Sahara Desert to assume control of our economic and political future?
I write this letter to ask my brethren in the South-South these pertinent questions. Let us assume the very worst situation in this supposed fracas between us and our Igbo brothers. Why are we worried about the Igbos taking over our “natural resources”, (assuming they don’t have theirs); ARE WE PRESENTLY IN CONTROL OF OUR “NATURAL RESOURCES”? Does it make more sense that our natural resources are being controlled by some strange people from over 700 miles away? The same people that kill us at will at any single provocation of their religion? People who even kill us in our land? People who challenge us to the ownership of these our very own resources? People who show absolute disregard for who we are? People who think it is a privilege for us to be in any position of authority? And finally, people who do not, in any way, have the kind of entrepreneurial skills that we have? Why would we allow our imaginary quarrel or fights with our brothers next-door to translate into the decision of one of the women in King Solomon’s judgment who insisted that, since she couldn’t have the contested child, the other woman should not either?
So are we, in essence, saying it is better for none of us brethren to own our resources simply because we don’t trust our brothers, yet we do nothing about the strangers who have ripped us apart? Are we logically correct in believing this senseless fabricated quarrel? Even while we are senselessly worried about how the Igbos will colonize our people because that is what we were told and that is what some in the ruling alliance are still trying to tell us, can we sincerely tell ourselves that the Igbos are that evil? Evil enough to leave their own natural resources in Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu states to come and take ownership of our own resources? How will they do that? How possible will it be for a people that barely kill by the sword to be compared to our present oppressors from up North? Do we honestly see that as a possibility? How and why did we allow these propaganda to go this far? Is this not what the hegemonic alliance has used to rule us through the divide-and-rule scheme? Sheik Jumiad Mohammed said it clearly that our separation was a creation of the North for the effective management of our regional resources while we keep fighting an imaginary enemy.
I write this letter to remind us that we and our Igbo brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers have cultural identities, we uphold life to be sacrosanct, we do not kill a man like a chicken, we worship the same God and we have identical looks and reasoning capabilities. Education is a respected virtue to both of us and entrepreneurship is a common love between us. We both respect constituted authorities. Even though we both have some cultural oddities in our midst, that cannot and should not be used to castigate an entire people. So how come the Igbo man suddenly became evil shortly before the war if the castigation was not a propaganda tool of that war? How did we accept that our Igbo brothers were evil while we were saints? How are we saints? Is there any evil that is the monopoly of the Igbos which we are totally clean of? That we don’t have a single man/woman who does same if positioned in the same situation? How did we allow a distant people determine how we live our lives together with our very own neighbors? If we think that we are different and as such, we are treated better than the Igbos, have we noticed that the fate of the Onitsha Port is the same fate that befell the Ports in Calabar and Port Harcourt? We from the East are all forced to use the Lagos wharves in order to pay taxes to those who control this port. How have we been treated differently by the ruling alliance if we were different from the Igbos? Are we not facing the same fate as our Eastern brethren? How do you think we will fare if we were the only ones to receive this maltreatment, given a circumstance where the Igbos are no more in this contraption called Nigeria?
I write this letter to our brethren to remind us that, without a unified stand by the entire region, the self-determination process will be a farce. We need each other in all difficulties. We are the Eastern Region; we are Biafrans; we are a common people; we are not different from each other. Starting from the Hills of Ogoja to the rocky soils of Ebonyi, down to the temperate region of Anambra to the enclaves of Ishekiri and Isoko, we all look alike. The Akwa Ibom man and the Abia State man are the same people simply divided by boundaries. The Calabar man and the Arochukwu man has identical ancestral masquerades. The Ikwerre man is just an Igbo man that was separated by the North to act as a different people. A British woman, camped somewhere in Kaduna, decided to add the “R” consonant to the “U” vowel to “totally break the identities of the Igbos in today’s Rivers state”.
The Ijaws, Kalabris, Oron and Efik are practically the same people positioned in different locations possibly during the settlements that happened centuries ago. We are all interrelated in the region and as such, must not be divided. We have been used for decades and disregarded at every opportunity; our rights are perceived as privileges, if not favors. We do not have control over our future as clearly stated by the late Alhaji Amadu Bello when he instructed his people not to allow us have control of our future, and that our ancestral lands should instead be seen as a conquered territory. Are we a conquered people by some strange fortune hunters who believe they are born to rule, conquer and kill? These are people who do not hold as sacrosanct what we revere as one. How can we continue in this union which was designed to enslave us? How can we allow the lies told by these strangers to pitch us against our very own selves?
An Addendum to My Igbo Brothers
I write to you to remind you that you can only fight a lie which was embedded into the hearts of my brethren by putting yourself in our shoes to know how best to respond. We cannot fight evil with evil. Like we know, they say two wrongs don’t make a right. It is your responsibility to subtly ask those accusing you some logical questions that may prick their hearts back to reality. We are all in this mess called Nigeria together. Our Son, Goodluck Jonathan, was treated the same way General Ironsi was treated; they were both rejected. They were both despised. Both of them wanted a united Nigeria that existed beyond tribes and religion. But what did we see? President Goodluck Jonathan was lucky to escape with his life, but General Ironsi was not that lucky. He was tied to a Land Rover jeep and driven on the rocky tarred roads between Abeokuta and Ibadan till he died and was shredded to pieces. Based on the Alhaji and Kunle’s phone conversation ( https:///8NhP7H ) which I believe we all listened to, we know that it could as well have happened to President Jonathan if he was not wise enough to let go of their birth right.
But can we continue like this? Look at what they are doing to Nnamdi Kanu? These are the same people who organized 70 lawyers to represent the Boko Haram suspects who have raped, maimed and killed Nigerians. “Yet the one they choose to lead us”, says Nnamdi, “is too dangerous to be released because he has dual citizenship.”? Is this the kind of place to which we shall continue to belong when we are likely going to be having malicious morons of this magnitude leading us?
I write to you my brothers to remind you that the Gambaris know for certainty that, having broken a greater part of you into other states in the South-South, it may be difficult to successfully secede knowing what we know today. So it is inappropriate for you to remind my own brothers that with or without us, that you will succeed. We cannot allow the propaganda of these gambaris to keep us apart. We must reject it by all means and efforts. We stand a greater chance to succeed as one region. As the older one of the two broken parts of our region, it is your responsibility to expose the deception that was used to mislead my people. It is you who should tell my people that you do not have any intentions to colonize them. We have to collectively put this ruling alliance to shame by consciously keeping our relationship cordial in the region. My dear brethren, I write to request that you should regard it as a solemn duty to remind us that we are all one people because, in truth, WE ARE ONE...
