WHO Director-General, Margaret Chan , will convene an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Zika virus and observed increase in neurological disorders and neonatal malformations. The Committee will meet on Monday 1 February in Geneva to ascertain whether the outbreak constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Decisions concerning the Committee’s membership and advice will be made public on WHO’s website. Outbreak in the Americas In May 2015, Brazil reported its first case of Zika virus disease. Since then, the disease has spread within Brazil and to 22 other countries and territories in the region. Arrival of the virus in some countries of the Americas, notably Brazil, has been associated with a steep increase in the birth of babies with abnormally small heads and in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a poorly understood condition in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis. A causal relationship between Zika virus infection and birth defects and neurological syndromes has not been established, but is strongly suspected. WHO action WHO’s Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has been working closely with affected countries since May 2015. PAHO has mobilized staff and members of the Global Outbreak and Response Network (GOARN) to assist ministries of health in strengthening their abilities to detect the arrival and circulation of Zika virus through laboratory testing and rapid reporting. The aim has been to ensure accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment for patients, to track the spread of the virus and the mosquito that carries it, and to promote prevention, especially through mosquito control. The Organization is supporting the scaling up and strengthening of surveillance systems in countries that have reported cases of Zika and of microcephaly and other neurological conditions that may be associated with the virus. Surveillance is also being heightened in countries to which the virus may spread. In the coming weeks, the Organization will convene experts to address critical gaps in scientific knowledge about the virus and its potential effects on fetuses, children and adults. WHO will also prioritize the development of vaccines and new tools to control mosquito populations, as well as improving diagnostic tests. Source: WHO |

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has described the indictment of British American Tobacco (BAT) in a bribery scam involving policy makers in East Africa as a shameful confirmation of public health experts’ long belief that BAT consistently undermines life-saving tobacco control laws in Africa. ERA/FoEN said the expose aired on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Panorama on 30 November, 2015 and titled: The secret bribes of big tobacco, makes it imperative for the Nigerian government to be wary of BATs romance with agencies of the state tasked with implementing the Tobacco Control Act signed into law by former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. In the investigation revealing BAT’s conspiracy, a whistleblower, Paul Hopkins, described how BAT funded illegal corporate espionage and how its contractors bribed politicians and policymakers in countries like Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda. Hopkins, a former BAT personnel shared hundreds of secret documents which revealed he started paying bribes after being told it was the cost of doing business in Africa. His job was to facilitate the payments. Emails he shared revealed the corporation made illegal payments to two members and one former member of the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC), a United Nations campaign supported by 180 countries, aimed at reducing deaths from tobacco-related illness. |

To raise the odds of getting pregnant, sex has to happen during a small window of time near ovulation. Ovulation primary is defined the time an egg(s) is released from the ovaries. A lot of patients ask this question and this concept is also the reason why some women have delay in pregnancy after years of wedding. Though in treating delay in pregnancy so many signs and parameters must be taken into consideration but the knowledge of this is very important. This piece will make you understand what happens before, during and after ovulation making it easier to plan your pregnancy and contraception. How do you know an egg has been released from the ovary? They may actually not be a perfect proof that you are ovulating but theses can only be decided from the basic body signs like changes in cervical mucus, cramps, tender breast and increase desire to have sex and especially when these signs are combined ; it makes it fully sure you are ovulating. Know when you are most fertile. You must always watch for increase in cervical mucus. Immediately after your last menstruation, there is always an increase in oestrogen, meaning the ovary is prepared to release an egg, then mucus become to discharge from the vagina. The mucus is whitish, slippery and thicker, if wiped with a piece of tissue or with the finger. The function of the mucus is to facilitate easy movement of the sperm as it approaches the egg and swims into the uterus. After ovulation there is an increase in progesterone which then makes the mucus sparse and reduced as the sperm may not be able to swim conveniently into the uterus. Chat your cycle. One other simple way to get your ovulation period is by keeping a calendar of your ovulation period. If your ovulation is regulars, the 14th day from your last menstrual period is always the usual time you are to ovulate but if it’s irregular, count the period and divide by 2 to give you the target day. This will give you the possible result. Track your temperature. Most women’s basal temperature increases slightly – about half- a degree- after they ovulate. To use this method, take your temperature at the same time every morning, before you get out of bed. Chart the temperature on a graph that also shows the days you menstruate. After you have done this for few months, you’ll begin to spot a pattern that will help you predict when you will ovulate. Your temperature will go up 24-48 hours after you ovulate. Use ovulation- predictor kit. Ovulation predictor kits are home tests that can be purchased in pharmacies without prescription. It helps to detect the level of leuternizing hormones in the urine. When there is increase in leuternizing hormone, it means one of the ovaries is about to release an egg. |
