Boot into Recovery... Backup and Restore... Then Backup!

NOTE : You should have a large free space... Say 3gb!

You need to be prepare for the unexpected.
Dont forget this..
ALWAYS TAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
That is a Complete backup of your present ROM,APPS and SETTINGS so should you miss anystep,you can always fall back to it.(Shebi if front no gree dey, person go fit reverse back?) Thats the reason for a Nandroid!

Try take a tour into XDA and see if you can Navigate your way tru. Goodluck.

Bro, its not dat easy to Upgrade, before you can Upgrade, some things need to be in Check!
ROOT is one... What OS Version do you use, You can only get Stock android OS for 4.2.2 or 4.3 on your DHD. (I beleive you know what i mean by stock Android) For you to back up your files, use TiBu (Titanium Backup) and backup just ur Apps only. That means you wont neet to install from market after the Upgrade! Backing up the cache & settings could result to issues.

Before anything, I'll advice you to take a COMPLETE BACKUP of your current rom (Which you have presently). To do that, boot into Recovery (Guess you know how to do dat). \Backup & Restore\ and take a complete backup of your rom which is about 2.5gb so you should create space in your SD already.

Is your Device S-Off or S-On? If S-Off , Good-Means you dont need a PC to flash your Upgrade
If S-On, You need a PC to flash the image file.

Download the ROM, Make Sure you check out for ROM BUGS before downloading any ROM. Find a Clean ROM and Download.
Put Zip in the root of your SD card, Boot into Recovery and Flash.

*Tired* Bro, see if you could do these above procedures first
