The spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dino Melaye has lashed out at All Progressives Congress governors who took President Muhammadu Buhari to court over the naira redesign policy. Melaye said the governors are motivated by personal reasons that benefits only them. According to him, the fear of losing their expected benefits if the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, loses the election is the sole reason governors Nasir El-Rufai, Yahaya Bello and Bello Matawalle took Buhari to court. The governors of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states sued the Federal Government earlier in the week, praying the court to stop further implementation of the naira redesign policy over what they called the hardship imposed on their people who find it difficult to swap their old naira notes for new ones, particularly those living in the rural areas. In an ex parte motion filed through their lawyer, AbdulHakeem Mustapha, the three governors, all members of the APC, prayed the court to grant them an interim injunction stopping the Federal Government either by itself or acting through the Central Bank of Nigeria, Money Deposit Banks or their agents from implementing the February 10 deadline of swapping the old 200, 500 and 1000 currency notes for new ones. “Unless this Honourable Court intervenes, the Government and people of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara States will continue to go through a lot of hardship and would ultimately suffer great loss as a result of the insufficient and unreasonable time within which the Federal Government is embarking on the ongoing currency redesign policy,” Mustapha said. In a statement signed by Melaye on Tuesday, however, the former federal lawmaker said, “Those who have positioned themselves to benefit from the unlikely and inconceivable Tinubu presidency are feeling so threatened, hopeless and rudderless that they have even now taken their own President to court over his refusal to endorse their evil agenda of using public funds to buy votes. As it happened in the Egypt of old, their money has failed in their hands.” The statement added , “Frightened by the unmistakable and unstoppable prospects of the loss of the presidential election, the APC has, in panic mode, resorted to outright falsehood against Atiku Abubakar, the imaginary APC cabal in the Villa, the Governor of Central Bank, the Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and even the leader of their party, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). “The current narrative being peddled is anchored on a conspiracy theory involving the aforementioned in an agenda that reflects ethnic pursuit. Having boasted that the APC has money to buy votes and having failed to mask behind a pretentious preference of power shift to the South, the new song is now against the indomitable Atiku as the favourite of the powers in Aso Rock, the Governor of the Central Bank and the Managing Director of NNPC. And I ask if the humiliated Nigerian masses and the key figures of the APC administration are against APC in an election year, how can it think of victory in the Presidential election? “Going by the propagated lies of the power hawks in APC led by Nasir El-Rufai, all things have ever been done to favour Atiku. By their postulation, the APC cabal in Aso Rock has done everything to favour Atiku, including the trillions of naira debt overhang, the spiralling inflation, insecurity, fuel scarcity, job losses, brain drain and unemployment.” Melaye further said Nigerians had given the APC “a long rope” and could now discern the leaders that could serve them, adding that “the greatest campaigner against the APC today is the APC.” He further noted that unlike, Tinubu , “Atiku is advancing rapidly to breast the tape. Like a striker on the soccer field, his opponents and defenders are doing everything to launch a sliding tackle. At this stage of the game, Atiku is already in the penalty box. The more the tackles, the greater his prospect of scoring. And with the panic defense being launched by thebAPC, it is obvious that they have, by their own confusion, scored an own goal. Head or tail, Atiku is the winner, as we now have the hosting fans booing their own home team and applauding the opponent.” https://www.tori.ng/news/226678/naira-apc-governors-sued-buhari-for-personal-benef.html |

A Ghanaian sidechic has sued a bank manager, who she claims was her lover, for allegedly breaching an agreement to take care of her. Deborah Seyram Adablah dragged the Director of Finance of First Atlantic Bank, Ernest Kwasi Nimako, to the Accra High Court, and he is expected to appear before Friday, January 27, 2023. In a suit dated January 23, 2023, Deborah contends that her ‘sugar daddy’ who was also her boss, agreed to buy her a car, pay for her accommodation for three years, give her a monthly stipend of GH¢3,000, marry her after divorcing his wife and also give her a lump sum to start a business. In her writ of summons and statement of claims which has since gone viral on social media, Deborah alleges that the ‘sugar daddy’ bought the car but registered it in his name. Later, he denied her access to use it after about a year of enjoying the Honda Civic worth GH¢120,000, while he also paid for only one year of accommodation. The plaintiff, whose national service period ended in July 2021, admits to being in a relationship with the married man, claiming that her happiness at the workplace was under threat had she failed to give in to the relationship. Deborah has also accused the defendant of abuse, sexual harassment, maltreatment, exploitation and also lowering her reputation. She further states that she had turned down an opportunity to be a permanent staff after her national service due to the manager’s promise of making life comfortable for her. Deborah revealed that her boss further promised to divorce his wife and marry her because his marriage had broken down beyond repairs. But in July 2022, their relationship suffered a blow when the first defendant decided to stop paying her rent and also providing other benefits he promised her. This compelled her to sue her former boss for breach of contract. On this basis, the plaintiff is seeking an order from the court directed at the defendant to fulfil all promises, including payment of lump sum to help her start a business to take care of herself. Below is a list of her demands: Transfer the title of the car into her name. Cost of repairs of 10,000gh. Pays lump sum money to enable her to start a business. Pays remaining 2 years' rent. Pays the outstanding arrears of her monthly allowance from July 2022 to the date of judgment and pays all medical expenses as a result of side effects. General damages against her. Any other relief(s) the court deems necessary including legal costs. The First Atlantic Bank, which was joined in the suit, has been accused of allowing senior officers to enter into relationships with unwilling subordinates while using the females as baits to win customers for the company. The Federal Government has officially increased the price of petrol by 8.8 per cent from N170 per litre to N185 per litre. Vanguard reports that an internal memo to that effect has been sent to various stakeholders in the oil sector. The ex-depot price also shot up from N148 per litre to N167. A few petrol stations belonging to the Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN, have already adjusted their pumps in line with the new price directive. Speaking on the development, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria IPMAN, Chinedu Okonkwo, said “So I heard but we are waiting for the circular because without that we cannot do anything. Hopefully, by tomorrow (today) we will get a clearer picture.” When told that some major oil marketers have adjusted their pump price to the new approved price, he said “Well they can adjust as the product is scarce to get at the moment, but with the new approved price, we hope to get products so we can sell to consumers” Commenting on the development, the National Operations Controller, of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, said his members had continued to lift the product at N240 per litre. However, most independent retailers of petrol in Lagos have adjusted their pump prices to between N290 and over N300 per litre. A new report released by Oxfam, an international confederation against poverty, says the three richest men in Nigeria have more wealth than 83 million citizens. Oxfam released the global inequality report at the start of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday. In the document, titled, ‘survival of the richest’, the international non-governmental organisation (NGO) said the wealth of Nigerian billionaires has grown by a third since the start of COVID-19 pandemic without a corresponding increase in health budgets. It also said the richest 0.003 percent of Nigerians (6,355 individuals worth $5 million and above) have 1.4 times more wealth than 107 million of the country’s citizens. Oxfam said a wealth tax of 2 percent on the millionaires, 3 percent on those with wealth above $50 million, and 5 percent on the Nigerian billionaires would raise $3.2 billion annually. According to the organisation, the revenue gained from the wealth tax would be enough to double health spending as Nigeria has one of the lowest health budgets in the world. Commenting on the report, Vincent Ahonsi, country director, Oxfam International, said super-rich Nigerians are not paying their taxes. “While millions of Nigerians are unsure where their next meals will come from, the super-rich are getting richer and not paying their fair share of taxes but taking advantage of the complexities and loopholes in the tax legislation, as well as the lack of transparency and accountability in tax implementation, thereby depriving the country of the revenue needed for social protection and inequality reduction.” “Taxing the super-rich and big corporations is the door out of today’s overlapping crises. It’s time we demolish the convenient myth that tax cuts for the richest result in their wealth somehow ‘trickling down’ to everyone else. “Forty years of tax cuts for the super-rich have shown that a rising tide doesn’t lift all ships — just the superyachts.” Ahonsi also said, to have a more secure and prosperous society, Nigeria needs to purposely work to reduce inequality, generate more tax revenues from the rich, spend more on health, education, agriculture and social protection; and provide fair, inclusive, and gender-sensitive opportunities for its citizens. The organisation called on governments to introduce one-off solidarity wealth taxes and windfall taxes to end crisis profiteering. “Permanently increase taxes on the richest 1 percent, for example to at least 60 percent of their income from labour and capital, with higher rates for multi-millionaires and billionaires,” it added. “Governments must especially raise taxes on capital gains, which are subject to lower tax rates than other forms of income.” https://www.thecable.ng/three-richest-men-in-nigeria-have-more-wealth-than-83m-citizens-oxfam-says/amp |

President Muhammadu Buhari says whoever is interested in serving Nigeria needs to be prepared for the “worst”. According to a statement on Tuesday by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesperson, Buhari said this on Monday at a state banquet in his honour in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe. Speaking about his administration’s fight against corruption, the president said curtailing the menace has “not been easy” under the current system operated bybNigeria. “In the north-east, God has helped us to clear Boko Haram; the economy has picked up, and some people are asking me about the achievements of my promise to fight corruption,” he said. “Well, under this system, fighting corruption is not easy. When I was in the military, as head of state, I locked up some people because the constitution says you must declare your assets, and people who couldn’t explain thebdifferences in their assets, I locked them up. In the end, I was also locked up. “So, if you want to serve this country, you must be prepared for the worst. But one thing that I am grateful to God for is that nobody can blackmail me.” The president also said he doesn’t have any land outside Nigeria, adding that he intends to stay in the country after leaving office. “I do not have one square inch outside Nigeria and I intend to stay in Nigeria when I retire from public office,” he said. “As I said more than 30 years ago, we have no other country than Nigeria. We must all stay here and salvage it together. “Between 2003 and 2019, I visited all the localbgovernment areas in this country. In 2019, when I attempted re-election, I visited every state and the number of people that came out to see who this Buhari is and wasnis more than what anybody can pay or force. “So, I thank God that Nigerians understood me and I made a promise that I will serve God and Nigerians.” The development comes weeks after Buhari told King Charles III that he does not own a house in the United Kingdom. https://www.thecable.ng/buhari-if-you-want-to-serve-nigeria-be-prepared-for-the-worst/amp |
