We are unsure if the protesters are sponsored by the government or is a legit protest. What we are sure of is that Amnesty International are always on loggerhead with the Nigeria government over what is true or not. Protesters are wondering why Amnesty International are suing the government for human right abuses against arrested Boko Haram suspects. I mean Boko Haram suspects nonetheless.

How can a Boko Haram suspect have a human right in this country? Do they even know what human is, let alone to human right? This Amnesty International are revealing truthfully who they are working for and I assure you, they are not working for the benefit of Nigeria and its government. I mean their actions speaks loud during their time in India and Israel.

However, according to Pulse News, protesters on the platform of Global Peace and Rescue Initiative (GOPRI), have sued a 24-hour ultimatum to human rights organisation, Amnesty International (AI) to depart Nigeria. The protesters who barricaded Amnesty International’s Abuja office on Monday, March 20, 2017, condemned the recent report by AI which alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian security agencies against arrested Boko Haram suspects.

Addressing protesters, director of GOPRI, Melvin Ejeh announced that if the human rights organisation does not shut down its operations and leave Nigeria, the group and other Nigerians shall begin a five-day ‘Occupy Amnesty International Protest at the office in Abuja.’ Ejeh noted that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Global Amnesty Watch have condemned the recent report by Amnesty International which alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian security agencies against arrested Boko Haram suspects.

“The deliberate attempt by the amnesty international to indict the security agencies working day and night to restore peace in troubles parts of the country without condemning the heinous crimes committed by Boko Haram terrorists proves that the international organization has ulterior motives,” Ejeh said. "Previous calls by concerned groups for the government to kick Amnesty International out of Nigeria for the safety of citizens have gone unheeded. Unfortunately, if this organization is allowed to continue carrying out its atrocities here it will destabilize Nigeria.

"Unlike our leaders, most of us do not have the resources to relocate our loved ones to other lands if Amnesty International succeeds in ruining this nation. Like the victims of AI's operation in the Middle-East we would be left without a country and we would not be welcomed in other nations. We will become mere footnotes in its next annual report since it stops showing interest in places it has successfully destroyed," he added.

He stated that recent revelation by Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, indicated that Israel used Amnesty International as a front for its foreign ministry. Ejeh said: “According to Haaretz, 'The documents reveal how some heads of Amnesty International Israel were allegedly in regular contact with the Foreign Ministry from the late 1960s to the mid -1970s, reporting on their activity in real time, consulting with officials and taking instructions from them.

"The Amnesty office in Israel received regular funds transferred through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which reportedly included hundreds of Israeli pounds for flights abroad, per diem allowances, registration fees and dues payments to the organization's headquarters, according to the papers.

"This in our consideration is not the right approach to dealing with this demonic entity. Its evil contaminates any country it chooses to work against. Its destructive touch leaves countries in failed state," he added. He maintained that Nigerian authorities might not be unaware Amnesty International’s ‘evil machinations’ adding that they may have opted to treat it with diplomatic considerations.

A Benin-based lady who caught her boyfriend cheating on her and started asking questions, was reportedly assaulted by her boyfriend @maca_veli, just right in front of the girl she caught him with.

Her very worried friend who sent in the post, with pictures of injuries her friend sustained from the assault wrote;

“This guy @maca_veli is threatening to kill her. This happened this evening when my friend went to see the guy (her supposed boyfriend) she met another girl with him. She started asking whatsup and before we knew it, the guy broke a bottle and was threatening her.

Next thing, he started beating her mercilessly in front of the girl he was cheating on her with. He dragged the cotton rail and hit her. It took the grace of God and the intervention of his friends to pull her out and managed to take her home.

Sequel to the High Court ruling which validates Fanta and Sprite dangerous and poisonous for consumption especially when used with Vitamin C drugs, which also ordered NAFDAC to inform the citizens of the development, the Federal Government of Nigeria via the minister of health says otherwise. You can read the full ruling here.

The minister of health thereby certify that Fanta and Sprite or any other Coka Cola products manufactured in Nigeria are safe for consumption.

Background

Arising from the recent court judgement on the case filed by Fijabi Holdings and another versus Nigeria Bottling Company and NAFDAC (joined as a nominal party), the Honourable Minister of Health summoned a meeting of the Department of Food and Drug Services, Federal Ministry of Health, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to address the related issues.

The following were the findings:

1. Both Benzoic acid and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are ingredients approved by International Food Safety regulators and used in many food and beverage products around the world.

2. Are levels of additives introduced as preservatives within specification? Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is the organ established by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) to set internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines relating to foods, food production, and food safety.

a. In the case of Benzoic acid, the standard set by Codex was 600mg/kg until recently reviewed to 250mg/kg and adopted in 2016. (CODEX STAN 192–1995 revised 2015 and 2016).

b. With reference to the Codex standard and other relevant documents, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as the standard setting body in Nigeria in consultation with technical experts and relevant stakeholders elaborated the standard of benzoic acid in soft drinks to be at 250mg/kg based on the National climatic and storage conditions. This standard has been in existence since 1997 and revised in 2008. (NIS 217:2008)

c. The levels of benzoic acid in Fanta (1 batch) and Sprite (2 batches) presented by the claimant in the court are 188.64mg/kg, 201.06mg/kg and 161.5mg/kg respectively.

d. These levels are in compliance with both the Codex and Nigeria Industrial Standards.

3. Are Coca-Cola products manufactured in Nigeria safe for consumption? Yes, the Coca-Cola products manufactured in Nigeria are safe for consumption in view of the following reasons:
a. Risk assessment was conducted to ascertain maximum limits of food additives acceptable in foods.
b. This takes into consideration the environmental, storage and distribution conditions as well as the shelf life of food products.

c. NAFDAC and SON regularly monitor the manufacturing practices of Food industries and conduct laboratory analysis to ascertain continuous compliance with required national standards.
d. There was a routine inspection conducted at Nigeria Bottling Company by NAFDAC officers in December, 2016 which was satisfactory.

4. Why is there difference between the standard of Fanta and Sprite in Nigeria and the United Kingdom?

· With reference to the Codex standards, each country or region is permitted to adapt a standard/limit based on country specific scientific evidence such as environmental, storage and distribution conditions.
· Benzoic acid as a preservative prevents the growth of microorganisms which thrive more at higher climatic temperatures like in Nigeria.
· Due to the different environmental conditions obtainable in the UK, the standard for benzoic acid was set at a lower limit of 150mg/kg while in Nigeria it was set at 250mg/kg even below that of Codex (as at time of production of that batch; Codex limit was 600mgkg).
· Food products being imported into a country must comply with the relevant standards of the destination country. NAFDAC has processes in place to ensure products imported into the country are evaluated to ascertain compliance with required Nigeria Industrial Standards.

The claimant did not obtain NAFDAC certification before export, otherwise, he would have been advised on the required standard of the destination country.
